Providing the latest technical advances to extract every possible
performance benefit for both H.264 and MPEG-2 compression is
essential for professional broadcasting and its supporting business
case. Whether adding new channels to existing multiplexes or
providing genuine video quality improvements at low bitrates,
the performance bar for many Tier 1 operators is constantly
being reset, through necessity, to seek nothing less than the best
possible performance.
Appear TV has developed a transcoding solution that
represents the ‘state of the art’ in compression today. Based on
all-new hardware, the Universal Transcoder combines the flexibility
and programmability of a software solution with the clear
efficiency and performance benefits that only hardware provides.
The immense computational power of the platform runs all-new
and highly evolved encoding algorithms, boosting performance
to the limits for both H.264 and MPEG-2. This latest-generation
transcoder platform has increased audio encoding capacity to
make it one of the most powerful transcoder platforms on the
market, enabling it to handle multiple audio channels including
Dolby® Digital and Dolby® Digital Plus1) . Complementing the
algorithmic improvements is an all new statistical multiplexing
system supporting a 2nd generation multipass look-ahead
architecture with lightning fast refresh rate.
The Universal Transcoder in High VQ Broadcast mode
is principally aimed at Tier 1 operators with the most stringent
low bitrate compression requirements. These customers will
not only find that Appear TV is able to meet or exceed their VQ
requirements in full, but can additionally bring a totally new
dimension to the design of the complete headend solution,
realizing all of the many features and advantages that has made
the Appear TV platform so highly regarded in this role.
In High VQ Broadcast mode, the Universal Transcoder
supports full decoding and re-encoding of content to make sure
optimal quality is maintained throughout the transcode process.
The transcoder module is able to transcode H.264 to MPEG-2,
MPEG-2 to MPEG-2, MPEG-2 to H.264, and H.264to H.264. The
transcoder module supports transcoding densities of up to 1 HD or
2 SD services per module, with full dual pass encoding support.
Many Tier 1 broadcasters use 4:2:2 distribution networks directly
as a high-quality source for the DTH compression stage. Appear TV
has included 4:2:2 decoding into this top-specification transcoder
to enable it to bridge the high-quality distribution and DTH roles
directly. The decoder supports the ‘AVC fidelity extensions’ fully and
so is able to decode virtually any H.264 4:2:2 8 or 10 bit source.
The new Universal Transcoder comes in the well-established
Appear TV modular form-factor and can be used with new or
existing XC5000 or XC5100 chassis in combination with any
other modules from Appear TVs vast range. For those looking
for a complete system, the unified head end chassis can hold a
wide range of purpose built cards, in addition to encoding and
transcoding, to handle reception from IP, ASI, DVB-C, ISDB-T, 8VSB,
DVB-T/T2 and DVB-S/S2, descrambling, audio leveling, scrambling,
multiplexing and all common output formats such as IP, ASI,
DVB-C, DVB-T/T2 and DVB-S/S2. The unified head end chassis can
be configured and monitored using its integrated web based
GUI. Additionally the system has a completely agnostic, open
architecture with interfaces that include XML, SOAP and other
industry standard protocols. This modular approach enables the
operator to easily adopt the system to meet future operational
requirements without having to replace the complete system.
The High Quality Universal Transcoder module is the
key to provide the most demanding Tier 1 operators with an
unbeatable compression option from Appear TV. It will enable
the very best in compression to be combined with the very best
in new and innovative systems design to redefine how headends
should be designed and operated.
