The Monthly Weather Review - Australia is produced by the Bureau of Meteorology to provide a concise but informative
overview of the temperatures, rainfall and significant weather events in Australia for the month.
To keep the Monthly Weather Review as timely as possible, much of the information is based on electronic reports. Although
every effort is made to ensure the accuracy of these reports, the results can be considered only preliminary until complete
quality control procedures have been carried out. Any major discrepancies will be noted in later issues.

Units of measurement
Except where noted, temperature is given in degrees Celsius (°C), rainfall in millimetres (mm), and wind speed in kilometres
per hour (km/h).
Observation times and periods
Each station in Australia makes its main observation for the day at 9 am local time. At this time, the precipitation over the past
24 hours is determined, and maximum and minimum thermometers are also read and reset. In this publication, the following
conventions are used for assigning dates to the observations made:
Maximum temperatures are for the 24 hours from 9 am on the date mentioned. They normally occur in the afternoon of that
day.
Minimum temperatures are for the 24 hours to 9 am on the date mentioned. They normally occur in the early morning of that
day.
Mean temperatures are the average of the daily maximum and daily minimum temperatures.
Daily rainfall is for the 24 hours to 9 am on the date mentioned. This means a significant fraction of the rain may have
occurred on the previous calendar day.
Monthly rainfall is for the period from 9 am on the last day of the previous month to 9 am on the last day of this month.
Maximum daily wind gusts are in the 24 hours from midnight to midnight.
Climatological values
The climatological averages shown in the text and tables are generally long-term means based on observations from the years
1961–1990. They are not shown for sites with less than 25 years of record in that time, as they cannot then be calculated
reliably. Climatological extremes are generally taken from all available years of record; the number of years can vary markedly
from site to site.
Records
The tables of records are not exhaustive, as they only show sites with at least 30 years of record. This may exclude locations
where a new site has been established; this means even some major cities and towns may not be listed.
Maps
The temperature and rainfall maps are intended to give an overview of the country. There could be discrepancies between the
values shown on these maps and those at individual locations, as a result of the way the maps are generated. A wide range of
maps of rainfall, temperature and other variables, covering the whole country and smaller regions can be found at
www.bom.gov.au/climate/maps.
Accessing data
Tables of daily values for selected sites are included toward the back of the Monthly Weather Review. Data from many more
sites and for other times are available from www.bom.gov.au/climate/data/.

May was also notable for being the second month in a
row with a small number of monthly temperature
records from single sites wih more than 30 years of
observations. Only one temperature record was set in
May: Mungindi Post Office in New South Wales beat
its previous May mean daily maximum temperature
record by 0.2 °C (see page 12). This compares to May
2016 when 54 mean daily maximum temperature
records were broken across the country.
Australia was warmer than average in May,
particularly in terms of maximum temperature.
Average maximum temperatures for Queensland, the
Northern Territory and Western Australia were all in
the top ten highest on record. Conversely, all States
except Queensland and Tasmania reported below
average minimum temperatures for the month.
Western Australia in particular experienced cooler
nights than average.
Rainfall was average to below average for much of
Australia during May, with the exception of the Gulf
Country, the base of the Cape York Peninsula and the
Central Coast district in northern Queensland. Very
much above average rainfall was recorded for May in
this region, and several across the State had their
wettest May day on record to 9 am on the 19th (see
page 12). Below average rainfall conditions continued
along the southern and western coast of Western
Australia, expanding into the interior.

Significant weather
Strong and gusty winds in Tasmania
A low moving past southern Tasmania brought strong
and gusty winds on the 6th and 7th, with several sites
reporting gusts over 90 km/h and a southwesterly
gust to 126 km/h at Tasman Island.
Heavy rainfall in northern Queensland
Heavy rainfall affected the northern interior and
southern tropics of Queensland on the 17th and 18th.
A surface trough located over the Coral Sea moved
towards the north tropical coast, increasing shower
and thunderstorm activity. Heavy rainfall was
recorded during the 24 hours to 9 am on the 19th at
numerous locations, setting some daily records and
causing. many locations to have their wettest May on
record (see page 12).
Storms in southwest Western Australia
Several cold fronts crossed the southwest of Western
Australia during from the 19th to the 21st, with wind
gusts up to 100 km/h recorded along the coast
between Mandurah and Cape Leeuwin. The
Department of Fire and Emergence Services received
38 calls for assistance for roof damage, water
leakage, and trees down in the southern Perth suburb
of Booragoon and at Denmark in the South Coastal
district.

Heavy rain in northern and northeast
Tasmania
A trough brought localised moderate to heavy falls to
the north and the northeast of Tasmania from the
20th to the 21st, with several sites recording over
100 mm and a few sites (notably Fingal and
Gladstone) having their highest May daily rainfall on
record (see page 12). The rain was accompanied by
strong and gusty easterly winds, with Cape Grim
(Comparison) reporting a gust to 85 km/h on the
morning of the 19th and larapuna / Eddystone Point a
gust to gust to 78 km/h on the afternoon of the 20th.
Minor flooding developed in the upper reaches of the
South Esk catchment.
Cool spell at the end of the month
The passage of cold fronts during the last week of the
month brought a cold outbreak to southern South
Australia, Victoria, Tasmania, and New South Wales.
On the 30th, Sydney Observatory Hill and Bathurst
had their coolest May night since at least 1999, while
in Dubbo it was the coolest May night on record at
either the current site at the Airport, or the previous
Darling Street site. The temperature did not rise
above 10 °C at several coastal sites in Tasmania's
southeast, with 8.8 °C at Hobart Airport the lowest
May maximum temperature there since 1989.

Synoptic summary
The synoptic patterns across Australia in May were
typical of late autumn: a series of slow-moving high
pressure systems with the occasional cold front or
trough. A trough from the tropical region delivered the
month's heaviest rainfalls over northern and eastern
Queensland.
After a strong frontal system crossed Victoria and
Tasmania on the 2nd, a ridge of high pressure
dominated from the 3rd to 6th. A cold front combined
with an easterly trough on the 6th, bringing rain and
wind to western Tasmania (see page 3) and southern
Victoria.
A series of blocking highs followed from the 7th to
the 14th, associated with sunny conditions across
most of the country. A coastal trough produced rain in
southeast Queensland on the 9th and 10th, and a
west coast trough combined with a cold front to bring
rain in western and central Western Australia on the
11th and 12th.

A low pressure and cold front system hit
southwestern Western Australian on the 15th. An
easterly trough formed off the Coral Sea on the 17th
and moved westward, bringing the heaviest rainfalls
of the month to Queensland on the 19th.
A trough then passed across the eastern mainland
States on the 20th and 21st ahead of a cold air mass,
delivering heavy rainfall to parts of Tasmania, New
South Wales and Canberra.
A pair of cold fronts crossed southwestern Western
Australia on the 20th and 21st. The second cold front
strengthened as it moved eastward, resulting in
rainfall in eastern Australia on the 23rd and 24th.
A succession of fronts crossed the southeast in the
last week of May, delivering rainy conditions. A cold
front from a deep low situated south of the Bight
brought rain on the 28th and 29th, and cold air from
the higher latitudes behind another front resulted in a
cool end to May.
Temperatures
May was warmer than normal for Australia, with a
national mean temperature of 0.71 °C above average.
A large positive mean maximum temperature anomaly
of 1.50 °C was recorded across the country, making
this month the equal 8th warmest May since 1910. In
contrast, the mean minimum temperature anomaly
for Australia was slightly below average with an
anomaly of −0.07 °C.
Above average mean temperatures were recorded
across the whole country, apart from small pockets in
western Victoria, eastern and coastal South Australia,
western New South Wales and inland Western
Australia. Particularly warm mean temperatures were
observed across the central Northern Territory and
inland Queensland to the edge of the Darling Downs,
due to above average maximum and minimum
temperatures throughout the month.
Maximum temperatures
Maximum temperatures were above average to very
much above average across much of the country in
May. The nation-wide mean maximum temperature
was 1.50 °C above average, the equal eight-warmest
on record.

temperature in May 2017
Average maximum temperatures for the month were
between 2 °C and 4 °C above average for the
southern half of the Northern Territory and a large
section of inland Queensland from the Gulf Country
down to Lightning Ridge in northern New South
Wales.
Monthly maximum temperature anomalies of 2 °C or
greater were also reported in parts of the Pilbara and
Gascoyne in Western Australia, as well as patches of
the central Northern Territory just south of the Top
End. No location in the Northern Territory had a daily
maximum temperature below 20 °C until the 30th
when Arltunga recorded a maximum of 19.8 °C.
During the first week of the month, warm conditions
associated with dry days dominated the western
coast of Western Australia and inland Queensland.
Negative maximum temperature anomalies occurred
in the northwest Kimberley on the 1st, and across
much of Victoria, southern New South Wales, South
Australia and Tasmania on the 2nd, 3rd and 7th, in
conjunction with a cold air mass moving up from the
high southern latitudes.
Rainfall and cloudy skies from a surface trough
brought cooler maximum temperatures to the
southern Queensland coast from the 9th to 11th.
Some regions in the Central Highlands recorded
maximum temperatures up to 8 °C below average on
the 10th.
By the 15th, positive maximum temperature
anomalies reappeared over the western Nullabor in
conjunction with a cold front and associated low
pressure system. The northerly flow ahead of the cold
front meant warmer than average maximum
temperatures were experienced in the pastoral
regions of South Australia on the 16th, and up into
Alice Springs and the Channel Country of Queensland
on the 17th.

Extensive wet conditions across much of eastern
Australia were associated with cooler than average
maximum temperatures in southeastern Queensland,
western Victoria and New South Wales on the 18th,
pushing into the east of the southern states by the
19th. A series of cold fronts then brought cooler than
average conditions to the southern half of Western
Australia 20th to the 23rd.
Unseasonably warm conditions persisted ahead of the
fronts in the eastern part of the country. Hobart in
Tasmania reported 21.1 °C on the 22nd, and
Brewarrina in the northwest of New South Wales
recorded 30.2 °C on the 23rd, both the warmest

temperatures ever reported at those stations so late
in the autumn.
Cooler than average maximum temperatures ended
the month. Cool maximum temperature spread across
Western Australia and the country's south on the
28th, while a cold outbreak delivered below average
maximum temperatures to most of the eastern half of
the country on 30th and 31st. Three stations in
Tasmania recorded their coolest May day since 2000
on the 30th, with several coastal stations failing to
reach 10 °C.
Minimum temperatures
Minimum temperatures were slightly below average
for Australia overall, with a national anomaly of
−0.08 °C. Minimum temperatures were generally
average to below average across much of the south
and west of the country, from the Kimberley in
northern Western Australia down to the Illawarra
region in eastern New South Wales.

Above average minimum temperatures were
recorded for May over most of Queensland,
northeastern New South Wales, Tasmania, the
southeast of coastal Western Australia and the north
and east of the Northern Territory. This includes
monthly means over 2 °C warmer than average in
pockets of the north and central west of Queensland.
A warm air mass moved across the central part of
northern Australia and the east of the country during
the first week of May, bringing warmer than average
overnight temperatures up to 8 °C above average in
the Central West and Warrego regions of Queensland
on the 4th, and across the central and south western
parts of the Northern Territory and Queensland on the
6th and 7th.
Cooler nights penetrated into southern and central
Australia from the 8th, expanding across most of the
country by the 11th. At the same time, warmer than
average minimum temperatures were recorded on
the southern and western parts of Western Australia,
particularly over the Gascoyne and Goldfields regions,
in association with a passing cloud band.
The Pilbara and surrounding regions remained cooler
than average until around the 21st, and much of
eastern Australia also experienced below average
minimum temperatures during the 16th and 17th.
Rainfall and cloudy conditions meant minimum
temperatures in South Australia were up to 8 °C
above average on the night of the 16th, and above
average for much of Queensland, New South Wales,
Victoria and Tasmania from the 18th to the 20th.
Clear skies ensured that southern Western Australia
was cooler than average for rest of the month, and
the cold outbreak on the 30th and 31st meant
minimum temperatures in the eastern half of the
country were also below average. Sydney had its
lowest May minimum temperature since 1999 on the
30th with 7.1 °C, and the Dubbo Airport in New South
Wales' central west recorded −4.0 °C, its lowest May
minimum temperature since records commenced
there in 1992. Regions of eastern South Australia and
southern Queensland recorded minimum
temperatures over 10 °C cooler than average.
Rainfall
Rainfall during May was below average for most of
Australia, with the national total 45% below the
average. May rainfall was below average for most of
Western Australia, particularly across the Gascoyne
and Goldfields regions, and the Gibson Desert.

Rainfall totals for May were above average across the
base of the Cape York Peninsula in Queensland, from
the Gulf Country to the tropical and central coasts.
Some locations observed record-high monthly totals
(see page 12), largely as a result of heavy rainfall in
the region on the 18th and 19th.
A surface trough delivered the only rainfall for the
month to the Kimberley region on the 1st and 2nd,
including 32.6 mm at Kimberley Downs for the 24
hours to 9 am on the 2nd. Light to moderate falls
were also recorded across southern Victoria and
South Australia, as well as western Tasmania on the
2nd, in response to the strong cold front. Western
Tasmania and southeastern Victoria also received rain

on the evening of the 6th, the highest falls occurring
over Tasmania's northern highlands.
The central west to southeast regions of coastal
Queensland were delivered rainfall on the 10th by a
meandering coastal trough. An extensive trough and
frontal system crossed the southern half of the
country on the 11th and 12th, bringing falls to
Gascoyne and Central Wheat Belt regions of Western
Australia on the 11th, and Goldfields and Eucla
districts by the 12th. The remnants of the system
passed Tasmania on the 13th, producing rainfall
across the state.
A low pressure system brought localised rain to
southwestern Western Australia on the 15th and
16th, with additional rain falling in the region on the
19th to 22nd from a series of energetic fronts (see
page 3). The low pressure system weakened as it
moved eastwards, with light to moderate falls
recorded in parts of South Australia on the 17th and
18th. By the 19th, the system was delivering rainfall
across the eastern half of Victoria and New South
Wales.
At the same time, a surface trough from the Coral Sea
moved southwest over northern Queensland, bringing
significant rainfall to the base of Cape York Peninsula,
the Tablelands, Central Coast and into the Central
Highlands on the 18th and 19th. Several stations had
their wettest May day on record — the highest
recorded total was 192.2 mm at Alva Beach southeast
of Townsville for the 24 hours to 9 am on the 19th
(see page 12).
The northern and southern systems converged on the
20th, producing rainfall over southern Queensland
central and eastern New South Wales, much of
Victoria and northwestern Tasmania on the 20th and
21st. The falls were particularly heavy across
Tasmania, with daily rainfall records broken there and
in southeastern New South Wales.
Frontal rainfall fell in patches over eastern South
Australia, eastern New South Wales and Tasmania
from the 23rd to 26th. A more substantial system
delivered rainfall from the 28th to 30th, primarily
across southern and western Victoria, western
Tasmania and the southeast and Murraylands region
of South Australia.
