World Bowls Rules - Conditions of Play

These conditions of play should be read by all the players taking part in the tournament.

1. All games will be played under the World Bowls Rules “Crystal mark edition”

2. All players must report to the tournament secretary and be on their rinks at the scheduled time. If any player fails to appear within 10 minutes of the time stated in the programme the game will be awarded to their opponent

3. The Committee will issue Red and Blue Stickers for every game which players will be expected to put on their bowls.

4. No substitutes will be allowed in any of the singles competitions.

5. One substitute will be allowed in the Pairs and Triples competitions provided that the tournament secretary is informed 1 hour before the scheduled time for the game.

6. No player will be allowed to scratch an entry in order to play in another combination in the same competition.

7. A marker will be appointed for each game, who will keep the score and answer any queries as to the position of the bowls and their distances in relation to the jack and/or other bowls.

8. All singles losers are expected to mark a game in the next round.

9. All singles will be first to 21 shots. Pairs and triples will be as stated on the competition page for the earlier rounds, semi-final and final.

10. One trial end each way will be allowed before every singles and pairs game, unless otherwise agreed with your opponents.

11. An umpire will be appointed for each day and their decision shall be final and binding.

12. In the event of inclement weather, the green keeper, along with the committee will decide if play will need to be suspended and if ground sheets will need to be used in accordance with law 1.3.12

13. If you are withdrawing from the competition before the start, you should inform the tournament secretary on 01597 824186. Your place will then be offered to a late entry which is on a list of reserves with the Secretary. If you are unable to continue in the competition you must inform the tournament secretary on 01597 825278

14. Every endeavour will be made to adhere to the times in the programme, but the committee reserves the right to alter the times if it is deemed necessary.

15. All trophies will be held for one year only and must be returned in good time and in good condition for next year’s tournament.

16. It is hoped that all winners and runners up will wear their whites for the presentation of prizes.

17. Dress: Greys for all rounds, except Semi-finals and Finals, which will be whites. Shirts will be white, but club or county shirts may be worn, provided that all participants in a combination are wearing the same colour.

Guide Lines For Markers

Marking a game of bowls is an art and takes time to master. A good marker can “make a game”; the players deserve the best you can be.

Be aware of the dress code of the players, you should be dressed the same. Introduce yourself to both players and establish whose bowls are whose. Tell the players you would like time to centre the mat before they deliver the jack and you would like to mark all touchers as soon as the bowl comes to rest and you would like permission to remove all dead bowls from the green or the ditch.

Carry the minimum amount of equipment onto the green with you. Normally, chalk, or chalk spray, 2 wedges, 2 pens, coin, box measure.

Do

Do align the jack after it has come to rest, but first note that the mat is straight.

Do pick up the mat from the previous end and place it on the bank.

Do ensure the jack has been cast 23 meters, it is your responsibility to check.

Do stand 2 meters behind and 1 meter to the side of the jack.

Do be alert and in position to see if a bowl becomes a toucher.

Do chalk all touchers on both sides immediately the bowl comes to rest.

Do answer all questions briefly, unless asked to elaborate by either player.

Do keep clear of the head when the players arrive, they determine the result of the end.

Do tell the players the score after every end.

Do call for the umpire if there is a measure required unless he/she is already on the green.

Do move to the front of the head after the bowl is delivered if either player plays a heavy bowl.

Don’t

Do not move about when either player is about to play their bowl.

Do not volunteer information on heads unless asked by either player.

Do not applaud either player or a shot.

Do not tell the players who is shot when they arrive at the head.

Do not obstruct the centre marker or the rink markers.

Do not engage in conversation with either player unless they want to.

Do not stop or catch any bowls which are about to enter the ditch.

General

Move to the front of the head to wait for the players to decide who is shot or how many shots are scored and to who and enter on the scorecard. Then walk quickly to the other end. The rest of the card can be completed after the jack on the next end has been straightened.

When the game is complete make sure both players agree the result and both sign the card. Put the time on the card and give to the umpire to check or take to the tournament office.

David Rhys Jones, Bowls
