means gearchanging is minimised and you can maintain a
high average speed, even up steep gradients. The latest
version of our automatic gearchanging system, Volvo I-shift,
makes gearchanging smooth, precise and fuel-efficient.

THE LOW, WIDE AND CONVENIENT ENTRY INTO THE VOLVO
FM IS PERFECT for the driver who has to climb in to and out
of the cab several times a day. The swift engine response
and the smooth changes of the automatic Powertronic
transmission make for comfortable progress even in
stop-go traffic. Powertronic is available with an integrated
retarder and can be equipped with a clutch-independent
power take-off that can be engaged and disengaged while
on the move. The Volvo D9B engine driven power-take-off
offers up to 1000 Nm when stationary or 650 Nm on the
move. The corresponding figures for the D13A are 900 and
650 Nm respectively. The Volvo FM is easy to manoeuvre,
even in congested spaces. And with our new 6x2 with
pusher axle, you reduce both tyre and road surface wear.
You also get excellent weight distribution with the rear
overhang of just 795 mm. Finally, we would like to
emphasise the truck’s impressive environmental
credentials. The Volvo FM is available in an incentive
version that meets Euro 5 norms, which means extremely
low emission levels. Good news when your business is

for different types of construction work. For the most
demanding assignments with special requirements
concerning loads and off-road ability, we recommend our
High chassis. It has extra-high ground clearance, a straight
front axle, well-protected components, sturdy sump guard
and a steel oil sump. The robust new steel bumper with
its generous approach angle makes the FM even better
equipped for tough driving conditions. Our new 13-litre
engine with up to 480 bhp delivers a massive 2400 Nm
of torque. And if you select our Powertronic automatic
gearbox, now available in a new version that offers
even better response and enhanced hill-climbing ability,
you’ll gain a smooth start and gearchanging without any
interruption in power delivery – a definite advantage

when you’re driving on slippery roads. Our High chassis
is available as a 6x4 or 8x4 truck and in 4x4 and 6x6
all-wheel drive configuration. All-wheel drive is available in

comfort still further, you can specify the latest generation
of Adaptive Cruise Control, which automatically maintains
the right gap to the vehicle in front. Our tractors come in a
variety of factory-built models, including ADR versions. The
Volvo-installed fifth wheel is a light and versatile solution.
Air suspension with automatic height adjustment is
road and load friendly and protects the expensive tank
superstructure. Electronically controlled disc brakes with
ESP are available on all tractors with air suspension.
Together with the vehicle’s main computer, the optional tyre
pressure sensors constantly monitor tyre pressures in the
truck and trailer. The truck is easier to handle and safety
is enhanced. Improved fuel economy is another benefit
gained from having the tyre pressures right.

transmissions and rear axles, there is always the ideal solution for your needs.
FROM 300 TO 480 BHP
Choose our all-new 13-litre engine if you need plenty of power or our 9-litre engine if your priorities
are low weight and low fuel consumption. Both the engines in the FM range are in-line six-cylinder,
electronically controlled diesel engines with an overhead camshaft, unit injectors and rear-mounted
timing mechanism and both are available in Euro 3, Euro 4 and Euro 5 (incentive) options.
VOLVO D13A – MORE POWER FROM THE START
The Volvo D13A has a displacement of 12.8 litres and is available with 400, 440 and 480 bhp. The
torque levels are 2000, 2200 and 2400 Nm respectively, giving impressive starting traction and
unsurpassed driveability.
VOLVO D9B – OPTIMISED FOR YOUR NEEDS
The new version of our economical 9-litre engine, the Volvo D9B, delivers high torque across a wider
rev range than before. The Volvo D9B is available with 300, 340 and 380 bhp, with 1500, 1600 and
1700 Nm of torque respectively. The engine is available in several variants optimised for distribution,
refuse collection and construction duties, as well as other applications.

Both the Volvo D9B and the D13A have their timing mechanisms at the rear, which means significantly
higher torque for power take-off operation. Up to 1000 Nm at a standstill and 650 Nm on the move for
the Volvo D9B, and 900 and 650 Nm respectively for the Volvo D13A.
INDIVIDUAL SERVICE PROGRAMME FOR MAXIMUM AVAILABILITY
In order to ensure maximum availability from your truck, your Volvo dealer can schedule an individual
service programme based on driving conditions and application. This means optimum maintenance,
and a reduced number of workshop visits. To minimise time in the workshop we have also enhanced
our fault-tracing and diagnostics procedures. The oil-change interval for the Volvo D9B is 70,000 km or
once a year. For the Volvo D13A, the oil-change interval is up to 100,000 km depending on operation.

Fulfils Euro 4 requirements and meets Euro 5
THE VOLVO FM CAN BE certified to meet the new Euro 4 European emissions regulations. In order
to reduce particulate emissions to the required levels, a number of changes have been made to our
combustion technology. While after-treatment of exhaust gases reduces the oxides of nitrogen. The
system that Volvo and most other producers have chosen is called Selective Catalytic Reduction
or SCR. The technology involves injecting a mixture of urea and water known as AdBlue into the
engine’s exhaust and converting oxides of nitrogen into harmless nitrogen gas and steam. The truck’s
diagnostics system ensures that the exhaust emissions really do meet the legislated levels.
If you want to meet the more stringent Euro 5 requirements that come into effect in 2009, we have
just the solution for you. Both the Volvo D13A and the Volvo D9B are available in special incentive
versions with extremely low emissions.

MORE POWER FROM EACH DROP OF FUEL
Even though it is almost one litre larger in terms
of displacement, the Volvo D13A uses less fuel
than its predecessor. For operators choosing the
Euro 3 variant, this is a straight saving. For Euro
4 and Euro 5 options, this means that the cost of
the AdBlue is compensated by reduced diesel
fuel consumption. In practice, you gain higher
torque and power output without affecting your
running costs.
The Volvo D9B in Euro 4 option is also more
economical.

CLEANER EXHAUST GASES. Over the past 10 years,
exhaust emissions from heavy trucks have decreased
considerably. The step from Euro 3 to Euro 4 means that
emissions of particulates and oxides of nitrogen will be cut
by 80% and 30% respectively. With Euro 5, emissions of
oxides of nitrogen will drop 60% from Euro 3 level.
QUIETER IDLING
The Volvo D13A is quieter than its predecessor. By optimising fuel injection, sound levels during idling
have been cut by as much as 2dB(A).

VOLVO I-shift for more users
VOLVO I-SHIFT IS AN AUTOMATIC GEARCHANGING SYSTEM that combines the robustness of the manual
gearbox with the convenience of automatic transmission. Above all else, however, I-shift contributes to
low fuel consumption and superior driveability. The new version of I-shift considerably extends its
operational area. Irrespective of the quality of the road you drive on, whether you carry light or heavy
loads, I-shift is available in a version that is designed for your needs. It can handle gross combination
weights up to 60 tonnes (100 tonnes in special applications). You can use a power take-off and
obtain up to 300 Nm while on the move. What is more, retarder performance has been considerably
enhanced. Volvo I-shift is available for different types of application. Choose between Basic,
Distribution & Construction, Long Haul Fuel & Economy and Heavy Duty.

MANUAL GEARBOXES
For truly heavy construction duties in tough
operating conditions, we recommend the new
version of our robust, automatic transmission,
Powertronic. It is designed to handle the high
levels of torque delivered by the 480 bhp Volvo
D13A. The new torque converter gives you faster
throttle response and in turn better starting
traction and hill-climbing ability. Internal losses
have been minimised, which has a positive effect
on fuel consumption. Powertronic changes gear
without any interruption in power delivery, which
in turn promotes excellent drive ability on even the
poorest surfaces.

ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED
DISC BRAKES
The Volvo FM is equipped with the
latest generation of electronically
controlled disc brakes featuring
a range of optional comfort and
safety enhancing functions. Among
these features are “Hill Start Aid”,
which prevents the truck from rolling
backwards during a hill start, a facility
for engaging the differential lock at low
speeds, and continuous monitoring
of brake pad condition and brake
disc temperature. These features are
available in the optional EBS medium
package.
ELECTRONIC STABILISATION
The optional Electronic Stability
Program (ESP) significantly reduces
the risk of driving off the road on
tight bends or during fast avoidance
manoeuvres and skids. It also reduces
the risk of jack-knifing when driving a
tractor/semi-trailer combination. The
brake system is automatically activated
if the truck behaves abnormally. Each
wheel is braked individually to stabilise
the truck and power to the driven
wheels is reduced. ESP also features
an advanced ABS system. ESP is
included in the optional EBS-high
package and is available on 4x2,
6x2 and 6x4 tractors with rear air
suspension.
LESS WEAR WITH
BRAKE BLENDING
When Brake Blending is activated, the
wheel brakes, engine brake and/or
retarder are activated by just pressing
the brake pedal. When the brake pedal
is pressed the wheel brakes are
activated first, then the auxiliary brakes
are activated and take over, in order to
reduce wear on brake discs and brake
pads.
PARKING BRAKE REMINDER
An audible warning that alerts you if
you forget to apply the parking brake
after you switch off the ignition or open
a door.
UNDER-RUN PROTECTION
The Volvo FM has an integrated front
under-run protection system (FUPS),
which adds no extra weight. You can
also specify integrated side guards
(SUP) and rear under-run protection
(RUP).
WORLD-CLASS COLLISION SAFETY
The Volvo FM meets extremely high
injury-prevention safety standards. It
has been put through the world’s
strictest safety tests and features
standard equipment such as a
three-point seatbelt, a deformable
steering wheel, energy-absorbing
interior trim materials, injury-preventing
pedals and fire-resistant textiles. A
driver’s airbag is available as an option.
The seat belts are now also available in
red, for those who really want the belts
to be seen.
New generation of ACC
A new generation of Adaptive Cruise Control
(ACC) is now available that also integrates
the foundation wheel brakes. The system
continuously monitors the distance to the
vehicle ahead using radar. In normal driving,
speed is continuously adjusted using the
cruise control and auxiliary brakes so you
always maintain a safe distance. If the gap
decreases too much, the system issues an
audible warning and the wheel brakes are
applied.
PERSONAL SAFETY
The Volvo Anti-Theft System gives you
complete protection against break-ins,
theft and attacks. The system includes
a break-in alarm, anti-theft protection
connected to the truck’s immobiliser,
and a security alarm. The Volvo
Anti-Theft System meets the insurance
companies’ toughest demands on
security systems. Several of the
functions are available as options or
accessories, such as the Volvo
Immobiliser. A smoke detector and
protection net by the bed are other
examples of onboard equipment that
further raise safety levels.
VEB with higher power
The Volvo Engine Brake (VEB) system is now
available with up to 300 kW of braking power
on D13A Euro 4 and Euro 5 (incentive)
versions. This means both higher safety and
lower wheel brake wear. The Volvo Compact
Retarder is available as an option for those
who operate in particularly hilly terrain.

for your needs. Here is a selection of what we can offer.
SIMPLE MANOEUVRING WITH STEERED TAG AXLES
Volvo’s patented towing beam concept has been further
developed for the new Volvo FM. It gives you even greater
flexibility and more choice of installation along both the
length and height of the beam. What is more, the new
beams are around 70 kg lighter. Most of the towing beams
can be attached at intervals of 25 mm.
The Volvo FM 6x2 rigid with electro-hydraulically steered tag
axle makes manoeuvring more simple and reduces tyre
wear. Perfect for narrow streets or vulnerable surfaces. It is
also available with a fixed tag axle with either twin or single
tyres or as a single tyred self steered tag. The vehicle
comes fully equipped with rear air suspension for a load
and road friendly ride or with the option of full air
suspension to facilitate easy load handling and/or demount
bodywork. Our new lightweight 6x2 pusher axle is available
on 6x2 tractors.

and tandem hub reduction axles. Making it easier for you to

low power losses and are lighter in weight than before.
Tractors and demount body trucks are available direct from
the factory ready for operation.
HIGHER PAYLOAD WITH WIDE SINGLE DRIVE TYRES
Looking for increased payload potential? Then one
possibility is wide single drive tyres which reduce the
weight of an FM 4x2 tractor by about 100 kg compared
with a conventional twin wheel installation.
MAINTENANCE-FREE
ALL-WHEEL DRIVE WITHOUT TORQUE LIMITATION
The front suspension of the disc brake-equipped Volvo FM
is entirely maintenance-free. Axles with maintenance-free unit
bearings and lubrication-free propshaft universal joints are
other examples of details that reduce service requirements.
READY FOR ADR
A new, lighter all-wheel drive system (4x4, 6x6) offers you
the best possible off-road ability on the poorest imaginable
surfaces. Volvo’s all-wheel drive is now available in
combination with engine power outputs of up to 480 bhp
without torque limitation. The Volvo FM with all-wheel drive
is available both as a rigid/tipper truck and as a 6x6 tractor.
The Volvo FM is available direct from the factory with the
option of an ADR package.
OPTIMISED AIRFLOW SAVES FUEL
LOAD COMFORT
Air suspension with height control and the option of
pre-programmed loading and unloading heights. The
latest generation of air-suspended axles has added
adjustment range for height selection while driving,
a kneeling function for the front axle and the possibility
of adjusting height manually.
NEW FIFTH-WHEEL MOUNTING FOR HEAVY LOADS
A new fifth-wheel mounting certified for a kingpin load of
36 tonnes is a welcome addition for operators hauling
heavy loads.
REAR BATTERY BOX
The Volvo FM in 4x2 and 6x2 tractor configuration is now
available with the battery box fitted in the rear overhang.
This frees space for larger fuel tanks and promotes
improved weight distribution.
NEW LIGHTWEIGHT BOGIE FOR CONSTRUCTION
A new B-ride bogie with a new lighter spring provides
considerably enhanced ride comfort.
The FM range is available with a full range of roof and cab
side deflectors for both tractors and rigids, as well as the
option of chassis side-skirts on most models. These can be
optimised to the superstructure improving the air flow and
fuel consumption.

Sleeper cab with lower roof height. Provides space
for cargo above the roof, ideal for car transporters.
Globetrotter. Designed for long-haul operations with

The I shift gearbox can be fine tuned to individual
applications via the following software options:
Basic: automatic control using starting gear.
Distribution and Construction: with launch control &
enhanced shift strategy.
Long Haul Fuel and Economy: as above with
“Eco-roll” & smart cruise.
Heavy GCW: as above but with a gear strategy to cope
with heavy loads.
Gearbox Retarder
Volvo Compact Retarder. A lightweight, compact
hydraulic and electronically controlled retarder with
braking power from 400 to 600 kW. Can be combined
with VEB, available with manual and I-shift gearboxes.
Not available with D13 and manual gearbox, right hand
drive.
Fuel tanks
Available in aluminium or steel with volumes from 160
to 810 litres depending on model.
Automatic transmission – Powertronic
Brakes
The latest generation of Volvo’s electronically controlled
disc brakes (EBS) with a range of safety and comfort
