1. Why Japan needs to develop new energy distribution post Fukushima
2. Demand Side Oriented Approach in Japan
– Showcase1: WiMAX
– Showcase2: Energy Management 2
Background information
to understand Japan’s situation
• After Fukushima Japan has lost base load electric supply resource, reached 30% total supply.
– Before Fukushima accident, 30% power supply was generated by nuclear. After Fukushima, it has become zero.
– Fukushima accident has caused for Japanese utility company to suffer from big deficit, because of increasing fuel expense.
– Demand Side Oriented Approach has become real as a new approach. 1.1

All Japan’s power meter can speak ECHONET Lite over IPv6
○ Japanese Power meter has two interfaces.
○ A root is for AMI and DR, connecting meter and utility
○ B root is for delivering meter data to demand side: Time stamp,
Watt hour, Voltage, Ampere, Power flow, Reverse power flow, Log
data

Requirements to
Demand Side Oriented Approach
• Under the disaster situation in Tohoku, many mobile service operation was down due to the following conditions:
– User’s mobile device was alive
– Some operator’s base stations were damaged – Network backbone were alive in some areas
– Device was locked by authentication [SIM] • In big data era, we need to manage many small devices via IPv6 8
On going empirical study in WiMAX
IPv6 over IPv4 network
• Existing WiMAX network is IPv4 network
• Among 6to4, Teredo, IPv6/v4 tunnel, we choose IPv6/v4 tunnel because – Global IPv4 address space was not available
– We wanted direct IPv6 connection to micro sensing devices

Demand Side Oriented Approach[2] in Energy Management
 Control of Demand - Energy Conservation, Demand Response
Simultaneous optimization on both demand and supply sides minimizing cost and maximizing social
benefit.
Switch from “Megawatts” to “Combining Negawatts with Megawatts” by introducing “Demand Response
(DR)”.
