Pettersson Elektronik D980 Ultrasound Detector Operating Instructions

The Ultrasound Detector D980 is a powerful tool for detecting sounds in the ultrasonic frequency range. It is ideal for studying bats, rodents, bush crickets and other animals that emit ultrasound. The D980 has three independent ultrasound conversion systems: a heterodyne system, a frequency division system and a time expansion system.

The heterodyne system allows you to select a specific frequency range for conversion to audible sound. This is useful for studying bats and other animals with specific ultrasound frequencies.

The frequency division system allows the detector to cover the entire ultrasonic frequency range without having to adjust the frequency control. This is useful for monitoring the activity of a variety of ultrasound sources.

The time expansion system allows you to record and replay sounds at a much slower speed, which is helpful for analyzing complex ultrasound signals. The D980 can store up to 12 seconds of ultrasound signals.

Frequently asked questions

The D980 has a frequency range of 10 to 200 kHz for the frequency division and heterodyne systems, and 10 to 150 kHz for the time expansion system.

You can connect a tape recorder to the FREQ DIV, HET or TIME EXP jacks to record the transformed sounds. Alternatively, you can connect a high-speed sound card to the HF jack to record the unaltered signal from the microphone signal.

You can adjust the sensitivity of the D980 using the HF GAIN control. Turning the knob counter-clockwise increases the sensitivity.

The overload indicator will flash if the input stage of the detector is overloaded. Overloading does not cause any damage to the detector, but the signals processed by the detector will become distorted.

The comment switch allows you to temporarily make the microphone signal available at the HET output. This is useful for recording spoken comments while you are recording ultrasound signals.

The D980 is powered by two 9V batteries. To replace the batteries, remove the battery compartment lid, insert two new batteries and make sure the battery connector snaps firmly into position over the corresponding connector of the battery.

If you encounter problems with the D980, please refer to the trouble-shooting section of the operating instructions. If you are unable to resolve the problem, please contact Pettersson Elektronik for assistance.
