How to choo se the right
i nfrared m odel:
What is the temperature range of the target?
REED offers a variety of temperature ranges. Choose the temperature range to
meet your application requirements.

How large is the target? How close can you get?
The field of view of an infrared thermometer is similar to that of a falashlight,
the further the object is away fro the flashlight, then the bigger the diameter of
the beam. The further you are from your target, the larger the area the infrared
thermometer is measuring. Optical resolution is defined by the ratio between the
distance from the object being measured to the size of the object being measured
(D:S). The greater the D:S ratio, the higher the optical resolution. A thermometer
with a higher resolutioon allows you to measure smaller objects from greater distances. Choose the ratio that best meets your application requirements.
What material will you be measuring?
Infrared thermometers work by measuring emitted infrared (IR) energy from a
target object and translating the value into temperature. Emissivity is the ability of
the material surface to emit IR energy.

Thermowell.
Separable sockets are
used to provide pressure
tight connections where
required. They also offer
the advantage of allowing a thermometer to be
removed from a system
without disturbance. The
thermometer is inserted and tightened to the separable socket by means
of a threaded swivel nut coupling. Quick response to temperature changes
is assured since the stem and socket are precision tapered, providing a
metal to metal contact at the sensitive bulb section. This thermowell is made
of brass with a 3-1/2 stem length, 2-1/2 insert length and 3/4" NPT.

What is Relative Humidity & why do we measure it?
Defined as the amount of moisture in the air. Humidity measurement and control
is required in many industries such a heating and air conditioning, food processing and transportation, agriculture and industrial processes.
Our thermo-hygrometers measure both
relative humidity and ambient temperature, in addition, some models also measure dew point.
Common effects of heat illness include: heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat
stroke, with heat stroke being a life-threatening condition.
There are four environmental conditions that may affect heat stress in an individual: ambient temperature, humidity,
radiant heat (ie. oven, furnace) and air
velocity.
Important to the level of stress the individual
faces are personal characteristics such as
age, weight, fitness, medical conditions,
acclimatization to the heat and even the
clothing or safety equipment worn by the
individual.
Relative humidity (RH) is the ratio of the
quantity of water vapor in the air to the
quantity of water vapor required for
saturation at the same temperature.
Another common indication of humidity
is dew point. Dew point is measured in
°F or °C and is the temperature at which
water vapor begins to form condensation. Dew point can be derived from
relative humidity and ambient temperature.
An inspection of the workplace can help determine in advance if heat is likely to be a
hazard. Once the problem has been found,
more often than not, it is a simple procedure
to correct.
Common place solutions include installing
reflective barriers for heat sources, increasing the exhaust of hot air, increasing ventilation or reducing physical demands of
work task through mechanical assistance
(hoists, lift-tables ...)
Heat stress is the effect on the body’s
ability to cool itself when facing high
temperature and humidity. Often this occurs when working in hot environments
and is especially hazardous during the
summer months.

Measuring DC voltage is one of the most basic tasks of a DMM. Typical DC
sources include batteries and rectifiers that convert alternating current, or AC,
to direct current.
Resolution refers to how small or fine a measurement the meter can take. The
terms digits and counts are used to describe a meter’s resolution. For example, a
3-1/2 digit meter can display three full digits ranging from 0 to 9 and one "half"
digit which displays only a 1 or is left blank. A 4-1/2 digit meter can display up
to 19,999 counts of resolution.
Accuracy is the largest allowable error that will occur under specific operating
conditions. There are two ways to express accuracy: as a percent of the reading
or as the number of digits of error. In fact, most accuracy specifications appear
as a hybrid of these two ways, eg. ±(0.3% +1 digit). For a reading of 1.000 Vdc,
0.3% equals 0.003Vdc. In terms of the counts or digits, 1.000Vdc has 1000 counts
or digits. One digit is therefore 1 out of 1,000, or 0.001Vdc out of 1.000Vdc.
Applying the total accuracy specification means that a reading of 1.000Vdc will
be accurate to within ±(0.003 + 0.001) = ±0.004Vdc.
AC Voltage Measurement
To measure AC voltage, most meters employ a converter that outputs the
equivalent DC voltage to the A to D converter. Two converter types are available:
averaging AC converters and true RMS AC converters. An averaging meter is
good for measuring signals that are sinusoidal and stable. If the signal is being
altered or distorted in any way, a meter with true RMS capability would give far

better accuracy. A meter’s ability to measure AC voltage can be limited by the
frequency of the signal.
True RMS Voltage: The voltage corresponding to a DC voltage that has the same
heating value as the AC voltage. In mathematical terms, this is the geometric
average of the voltage.
Average Voltage: The simple arithmetical average of the rectified AC voltage.
Peak Voltage: The instantaneous voltage high points in an AC wave train.
Crest Factor: The ratio between the peak and the true RMS voltage.
AC and DC Current Measurement
Current measurements are different from other measurements in that they are
made in series, unlike voltage measurements, which are made in parallel. A
common mistake is to leave the test leads plugged into the current input jacks
and then attempt a voltage measurement. This causes a direct short across the
source voltage through a low-value resistor inside the meter, called a current
shunt. The entire current flows through the meter, and it can cause extreme damage to the meter and to the circuit.
For current measurements that exceed the rating of your DMM, a current probe is
very useful in protecting the operator from potentially dangerous voltages. There
are two types of current probes: current transformers and Hall-effect probes.
Current Transformer: Used to measure AC current only. The output of this device
is 1milliamp per amp.
Hall-effect Probe: A semiconductor device that measures the magnetic field around
a current conductor to determine the current’s value. The output of this probe is
1 millivolt per amp, AC or DC.

The following air velocity instruments are vane type anemometers
that can be used in a wide variety of applications requiring KNOTS,
KPH, M/S and FPM measuring. Ideal for air conditioning and heating
systems, measuring air velocities and wind speeds. Temperature and
humidity can also be read on some meters.
Anemometers will provide fast accurate air velocity readings in easy to
access areas. When using the hold function or max/average features
you will simplify wind turbulence problems that normally occur. For

Velocity and volume applications are sometimes very clean or very
dirty. Hot wire anemometers are used in clean HVAC environments;
where as static pressure tips are better suited for dirty and highly
flammable environments. Both are higher m/s ranges and are suitable when access to ducts is limited to small openings.
Differential pressure and hot wire anemometers are the alternative
measuring devices used when the air contains particles, only small
openings are available to insert a probe, high air temperature is a
factor and higher ranges of air velocity need to be recorded.

A wide variety of devices are commercially available for measuring air velocities. These include hot wire anemometers for low air velocities, swinging vane
anemometers and variable area flow meters.
The total flow rare of flow volume in cubic feet per minute (cfm) is easily computed using the formula:
Q = AV, where
Q = Quantity of flow in cubic feet per minute
A = Cross sectional area of duct in square feet
V = Average velocity in feet per minute
To determine the average velocity, divide the opening into a number of equal
areas. Take a velocity reading at the centre of each area and numerically
average the results. If the velocity profile is relatively flat, only a few areas
are needed. If the profile is not uniform, several equal areas should be used.
Generally, it is a good idea to make a rapid traverse across the duct in two
dimensions to determine the uniformity of air velocity. If the velocity is not
constant at one measuring point, use the mean velocity between the upper and
lower readings.

Mea su ring Speed of Rotation
One of the most basic methods of sensing the speed of rotation of some rotating component is the contact tachometer. With such a tachometer, the shaft of
the rotating component is coupled to the shaft of a small DC generator. The
output voltage of this generator is fed to a voltmeter. The scale of the voltmeter is calibrated in units of rpm (revolutions per minute). The amplitude of the
generator output voltage is directly proportional to the rotational speed of the
rotating component. Thus, an increase in rotational speed produces a high voltage which, in turn, appears as a higher rpm indication.
A photo tachometer is another method for measuring the speed of rotation,
without physical contact. A piece of reflective material is affixed to the rotating component. The photo tachometer emits a beam of infrared light which is
directed towards the reflective target. when the light beam strikes the target, it is
reflected back to a light sensor housed inside the tachometer. When the light is
applied to the sensor, an output voltage is produces. If the component is rotating
steadily, the sensor produces "pulses" of voltage (one pulse for each time the
reflective target passes by the light beam). The pulses are then converted to an
rpm indication by a frequency measuring device or counter.
The magnetic pickup is a more common method of measuring the speed of
rotation. The basic elements of this system are a metallic toothed wheel, such as
a gear wheel, connected by a shaft to the rotating component, and a magnetic
pickup or coil. Typically, the pickup consists of a housing containing a small
permanent magnet with coil wound around it. A fixed magnetic field surrounds
the field. since both the field and coil are stationary, no voltage is induced in the
coil. When the wheel is rotated and the teeth pass through the field, a voltage
pulse is induced in the coil. The frequency of the pulses depends on the number
of teeth and the speed of rotation. Since the number of teeth is known, the pulse
frequency can be related directly to rpm.

Measuring Sound
For most laboratory or control and instrumentation applications, sound is measured in units of sound pressure, which a total instantaneous pressure at a
given point, in the presence of a sound wave, minus the static pressure at that
point. Sound pressure transducers differ from microphones. A sound-pressure
transducer provides an output in response to sound pressure which is to be
measured. The microphone provides an output in response to sound waves
which are not necessarily associated with a measurand.
A decibel is one tenth of a bel. The use of the decibel, which is a logarithmic
unit, permits a closer approach to the reaction of the human ear. This is because
the response of the human ear to sound waves is approximately proportional
to the logarithm of the energy of a sound wave and is not proportional to the
energy itself. The impression gained by the human ear as to the magnitude of
sound is roughly proportional to the logarithm of the actual energy contained
in the sound.
Sound pressure is expressed in terms of sound-pressure level, or SPL, which
is 10 times the logarithmic ratio of the mean-square sound pressure to meansquare reference pressure. SPL is usually expressed in decibels as 20 times the
logarithm (base 10) of the ratio of the root-mean-square (RMS) sound pressure
to an RMS reference pressure, or SPL = 20 log10 [p (RMS) / pref (RMS)]
The ear does not respond equally to frequencies, but is less efficient at low and
high frequencies than it is at medium or speech range frequencies. Thus, to obtain a single number representing the sound level of a noise containing a wide
response, it is necessary to reduce, or weight, the effects of the low and high
frequencies in a manner representative of the ear’s response with respect to the
the medium frequencies. The resultant sound level is said to be A-weighted, and
the units are dB(A). The C-weighting network weights the frequencies between
70 and 4000 Hz uniformly, but below and above these limits frequencies are
slightly discriminated against. Generally, C-weighted measurements are essentially the same as overall sound pressure levels, which require no discrimination
at any frequency.
The reference pressure is usually considered as 2 x 10-4 dynes/cm2, or 2 x 10-4
microbar. A dyne is the amount of force that causes a mass of 1g to alter its
speed by 1 cm/sec for each second during which the force acts. A microbar is
one millionth of a bar. One bar is the normal or standard atmospheric pressure
at sea level.
The decibel (dB) has been widely adopted in electronics to express logarithmically the ratio between two powers, voltage levels, or sound power levels.

How do refractometers
work?
These refractometers use a transmission type optical measuring system, which
allows light to pass through a liquid. According the refraction phenomena
arising at the interface with the prism, it splits cleanly, forming a boundary
line on the scale face. The scale is read in terms of the position of the boundary line. The dark side of this boundary line is designed to appear as sharp
blue. For this reason, taking readings has become easier, even with dark
coloured or extremely cloudy liquids.
These refractometers have the broadest range of applications. Lightweight
and easy to use, they require only a drop or two of liquid to give an instant
reading. The equipping of most models with rubber grips and rubber boots
has had the effect of further stabilizing measurements. The transmission of
hand heat to the refractometer has been rendered difficult and temperature
error greatly diminished.
BRIX refractometers.

• Temperature controlled black-body target with a diameter of 2.25"
