Safety notes, electrical protection class
1 Safety notes, electrical protection class
This instrument was built and tested in compliance with the safety regulations for
measuring and control instrumentation for protective class I (protective earth connection)
according to IEC 1010/ EN61010 or VDE 0411. The instrument was delivered in safe
condition. To maintain this condition and to ensure safe operation, the operator must
follow the hints and warnings given in this documentation.
1.1
Application of the instrument
The instrument is intended for use as an indicator and control unit. Various application packages are available
and customer-specific programs can be created by means of programming tools. Product operation,
commissioning and maintenance must be done only by trained and qualified personnel aware of and able to
avoid the related hazards or taking suitable measures for self-protection.
The instrument is state of the art. No warranty is taken that the product is free from faults, especially with
reference to software and hardware supplied by third parties. The manufacturer does not take any liability for
damage caused by other system components or due to incorrect use of the product.
The use of this product is considered as recognition of the stipulations mentioned above.
1.2
Initial inspection
Check the content of the consignment for completeness and inspect it visually to find out if it was damaged
during transport. If there is reason to complain, a claim must be filed with the carrier immediately and the
Sartorius sales or service organization must be notified to permit repair or replacement of the unit.
1.3
Before commissioning
Visual inspection!
Before commissioning, after storage and transport, inspect the instrument visually to
preclude mechanical damage.
1.3.1
Installation
The instrument front panel meets IP67. It is suitable for mounting in any position. For cooling of the
instrument, the air circulation must not be impaired. Avoid heat effects, e.g. by direct sun radiation. The
environmental conditions must be taken into account. The following mounting methods are possible:
Table-top mounting
The unit stands on the rubber feet.
Mounting is done by means of 3 screws M4 on pedestal (accessories), e.g.
YDH02DWP.
By means of 3 screws M4 and a wall mounting bracket (accessories)
Wall mounting
YAS06CISPRO. The front lid should be turned so that the cable connections
point downwards.

Opening the instrument
Working at the switched on unit may be dangerous to life.
Disconnect the instrument from the supply voltage! When removing covers or parts by
means of tools, live parts or terminals may be exposed.
Capacitors in the unit may still be charged also after disconnecting the unit from all
voltage sources.
CAUTION
DANGER TO LIFE !
After disconnecting from all voltage sources, wait at least one minute (LEDs on main and processor board off)
before opening the housing, until the processor has finished storing the instrument status. This instrument
contains electrostatically sensitive components. For this reason, potential equalization is required when working
at the open instrument (antistatic protection).
1.3.3
Earthing, protective earth
The instrument must be connected to protective earth via protective earth conductor PE in the power
connector. The power cable contains a protective earth conductor, which must not be interrupted inside or
outside the unit (e.g. by using an extension cable without protective earth). The protective earth is connected
to the housing rear in the instrument.
1.3.4
Power connection, power supply
As the unit does not have a power switch, it is ready for operation immediately after connecting the supply
voltage. Safe interruption of both supply voltage conductors by means of the power connector or an
additional switch must be possible. The unit is equipped with a wide range power supply and covers AC systems
with a frequency of 50 Hz / 60 Hz and a voltage range of 100 VAC ... 240 VAC +10% / -15% automatically
(without selecting). The power supply is protected against short circuit and overload and switches off
automatically in case of failure.
When the electronic protection has triggered:
• Disconnect the unit from all voltage sources and wait min. 1 minute.
• Determine and remove the trouble cause.
• Re-connect the unit to the supply voltage.
The graphic display can be switched off by pressing key 'On/Standby'. The supply for the PS/2 port
will be cut.
Caution! The instrument remains under voltage!
1.3.4.1 Direct voltage version 24 VDC
The 24 VDC version is designed for connecting to 24 V direct current. The voltage has to be applied with the
correct polarity (reverse voltage protection). Take care to provide strain relief.
1.3.5
Failure and excessive stress
When the instrument is suspected of being unsafe, shut it down and protect it against accidental operation.
This is the case when the unit
- is physically damaged,
- does not function any more,
- is stressed beyond the tolerable limits (e.g. during storage, transport).
1.3.6
For special attention
Make sure that the construction of the instrument is not altered to the detriment of safety. In particular,
leakage paths, air gaps (of live parts) and insulating layers must not be reduced. Sartorius cannot be held
responsible for personnel injury or damage caused by an instrument repaired incorrectly by user or installer.

2 Weighing terminal
The instrument is equipped with a colour graphic display and an alphanumeric keypad. In conjunction with an
application program (e.g. for counting, checking, totalizing), the instrument is a powerful system for control /
documentation of weighing and batching processes. It associates the functions of a highly convenient
operator interface, a weighing and batching controller, a PLC and interfaces.
The unit is programmable in compliance with standard IEC 61131-3. For this purpose, the PR 1750/60 program
development tool is available as an accessory.

Housing
The instrument is provided with a multi-functional stainless steel housing (377x260x145 mm) and a front
panel compliant with IP 67. It is suitable for use as a table-top or a wall-mounted unit, a for installation in a
cabinet. Keypad, display and display board form a unit with the front panel. The front panel is 15.5 mm high. It
is connected with the housing by means of 8 screws M4. A square cut-out (350 mm x 217 mm) is required for
panel mounting (mounting kit YAS04CISPRO). The cable connections are made on the housing rear. Max. 2 6pin plug-in terminal blocks are provided for connection of the internal weighing electronics. Connection of an
external keyboard or of a scanner is possible via a PS/2 socket. The built-in serial interface is taken to a 9-pole
D-Sub connector socket. Network connection is possible via the built-in RJ-45 LAN socket. 4 cut-outs for plugin cards are covered by dummy panels.
The power cable is taken into the instrument via a cable entry gland for strain relief. When using the
YAS01CISPRO rear extension unit available as an accessory, the complete instrument offers protection class
IP67.

The weight display permits indication of 7-digit weight values with decimal point and polarity sign.
Possible units of mass are t, kg, g, mg, lb or oz. Lb or
oz are not permitted in the EU and EEC.
Via the weight display, the instantaneous weight is
displayed as a bargraph in relation to the maximum
capacity (Max). At 100% of Max, the bargraph is
fully home at the right stop.

Entry of alphanumeric characters
An input field is marked clearly. Indication if the alphabetic letters are enabled is provided.
By pressing once, the relevant first character, e.g. 'A', is
displayed in the cursor position. After pressing twice, 'B' is
displayed in the cursor position and after pressing three
times, 'C' is displayed. The entry of a character is completed
by pressing other character keys, or the right arrow key .

3 Installing instrument and plug-in cards
Before starting work, read chapter 1 and follow the hints!
Further procedure:
• Check the consignment: unpack the components pertaining to the application.
• Safety check: inspect it for damage.
• Ensure that the on-site installation is correct and complete including cables, e.g. power cable fuse
protection, load cells, cable junction box, data cable, console/cabinet, etc.
• Follow the instructions for installation of the unit (related to application, safety, ventilation, sealing and
external effects)!
• If necessary, mount the plug-in cards (instrument must be disconnected from all voltage sources).
• Connect the cable from cable junction box or platform / load cell.
• If necessary, connect further data cables / power cable etc.
• Connect the power cable.
• Check the installation.
3.1
Mechanical preparation
If mounted as a table-top unit, Combics Pro requires a flat, stable surface.
For wall mounting, the lid of the instrument must be turned into a position that the connecting sockets point
downwards.
With cabinet or panel-mounting, a corresponding cut-out for the housing must be provided.
Keep all parts, technical documents and required tools ready for mounting. Take the cable to the place of
installation and mount it (e.g. by means of cable ties). Remove the insulation from the cable ends, keep the
strands short and fit them with end crimps.
3.2
Hardware construction
The electronics is accommodated on three printed circuit boards (main board, processor board and display

The ticket printer YDP12IS-OCEUV or YDP04-OCEUV can be connected via [Builtin] RS 232 interface or the
RS232 on card PR 5510/04.
If the printer is connected to the [builtin] serial port :
Set in -[Serial ports parameter]-[Printer]-[Builtin RS232]-[Param] the [Protocol] to [RTS/CTS], [Baudrate] to
9600, [Bits] to 7, [Parity] to [none], [Stopbits] to 1 and [Output mode] to [raw] . The printer has to be set to
Line Mode (Factory settings are Page Mode !). Switching is done by the 'FEED' button, please refer to the

Installing plug-in cards
The main board is equipped with slots A and B for 2 internal PR 5800/10 weighing electronics, which have to
be plugged in directly and blocked by means of 2 screws M3 each.
The main board has three slots with identical pin allocation (34-pole, double row 2 x 17 contact pins) and
another slot (34-pole, double row 2 x 17 contact pins) for plug-in cards. The slot description is Slot 1 ... 3 and
Slot 4 (bottom left).
With application software packages, the cards are mostly inserted into firmly allocated slots, for which
subsequent changing may be not possible.
Before installing/modifying a plug-in card, controlled instrument shut-down using -[System
functions]-[Shutdown & Power off] and disconnection from all voltage sources is required, see
chapter 4.3.7.
Installation (1-4):
The flat cables plug into the connectors (1 ... 4)
on the main board. The cables are polarized, i.e.
wrong polarity is precluded.

3.4.10.6 Connection of an xBPI platform (weighing module) via RS485
Connection of a platform with xBPI protocol is possible via interface PR 5510/04 RS 485.
Set in -[Serial ports parameter]-[xBPI-Port 1/2]-[Slot 1/2/3 RS485]-[Param] the [Baudrate] and [Stopbits]. The
other parameters are fixed.

3.4.10.7 Connection of an xBPI terminal via RS485
A terminal with xBPI protocol can be connected via interface PR 5510/04 RS 485.

The plug-in card is used for BCD-coded output of a weight value (5 decades + polarity sign) or as a digital IO
card (1x input / 24x output). The setting must be done in the relevant application.

The PR 5510/08 outputs (PIN 2 … 24) work with common supply voltage at the collector as reference potential
and open emitter outputs. A non-activated output is of high impedance, and a voltage by approx. 1.7 V lower
than the supply voltage is applied to an active output.
The load to be connected is applied between the output (PIN 2 … 24, 25*) and GND (PIN26).

4.1
Data back-up / power failure
The calibration data and parameters of the internal weighing electronics as well as general configuration and
interface data are stored in a non-volatile (EAROM) memory. For calibration data and parameters as well as
programs, additional write protection (CAL switch, see chapter 4.1.1) is provided. The alibi memory is a
separate memory, which is energized by the back-up battery in case of disconnection from the supply
voltage.
The overall working memory with the database content is dumped in a data FLASH in case of voltage sags or
disconnection from the supply voltage, i.e. it is stored permanently. After power recovery, all data are loaded
again from the data FLASH into the working memory and the unit changes to the display status as before
failure. Batch programs are stopped.
4.1.1
CAL switch
Up to 4 CAL switches are located on the instrument rear. CAL switches 1 and 2 are always provided. Dependent
on equipment, switches A and B, which are located beside the connectors for weighing electronics PR 5800/10
can be fitted. The exact function of the individual switches is given in the table below.
Generally, we recommend setting the switches into the active position (+) after calibration to prevent
accidental overwriting / data loss. If necessary (e.g. loading of a new program), the relevant CAL switch can be
opened (no write protection, position (o)).
With legal for trade applications, the CAL switches must be sealed in the active position.

Flashing of application programs not mandatory for verification
If the CAL-switch 1 is closed ( sealed in legal for trade mode ) application programs not mandatory for
verification can be flashed and programs or functions already contained in the instrument can be activated via
license numbers. The license for ALIBI memory is essential. The activation of programs or functions is recorded
by the AUDIT-function and can be read-out.
The download (flashing) of programs not mandatory for verification is only possible by means of the program
tool FlashIt, which is delivered by Sartorius. The generation of these programs is only posible with the
programming tool PR 1750 which can be ordered at Sartorius.

Switching on the instrument
The instrument can be taken into operation via front-panel keys, via an external PC keyboard, via a PC with
programm VNC or an Internet explorer. At the first switching on or if plug-in cards were changed (position,
adding or removal), a cold start with [2 Coldstart] is required and date and time must be set.
4.2.1
BIOS menu
If the instrument is not in a regular status, the BIOS-Menu can be reached by:

[4 Erase]: With Erase, max. 5 possibilities dependent on the installed cards are offered, with the advantage
that only selected memories are reset to default:
[1] The overall data FLASH memory is deleted.
[2] The data in the alibi memory are deleted (application must support the alibi memory).
[3] Calibration data and parameters of weighing electronics A are set to default.

Operating concept commissioning
Instrument configuration and operation are possible via the front-panel keypad (function keys, navigation keys
and softkeys), via an external PC keyboard (see chapter 3.3.5 ) or via a PC with program VNC / Internet explorer
(see chapter 4.3.1).
The sections for calibration of the internal weighing electronics and configuration can be selected directly by
pressing function key Setup . Information on the installed hardware (additional cards), programs and
instrument status can be displayed with .
4.3.1
Operation via program VNC
VNC stands for 'virtual network computing' and is a program for remote operation of computers.
VNC server and VNC client (viewer) are distinguished. The server program is part of the Combics Pro software.
The client program (viewer) must be installed and started on the PC intended for operation.
When starting the program on the PC, the IP address (extended by :1) of the built-in LAN adaptor must be
specified, e.g. 172.24.22.170:1 .
The address of the controlling PC must be enabled in the instrument, see chapter 4.9.8 .

Function set-up
After pressing , the most important operating parameters can be adjusted. The instrument configuration is
dependent on provided application (licenses) and installed plug-in cards.
Calibration of the internal weighing electronics is in a simple dialogue. Compliance with the relevant
(verification) standards must be checked by the commissioner/ verification officer. To protect the calibration

Loading new software
The instrument contains BIOS, firmware and an application software package (e.g. counting, checking,
totalizing). Program FlashIt!32 Rel 2.49 is required to load new BIOS and/or firmware and/or applications.
Normally, a new BIOS needs to be loaded only when requested by the instrument.
Loading of a BIOS must not be interrupted, because the loading program for FlashIt!32 is included
in the BIOS, otherwise, the instrument must be returned for repair.

Combics Pro can manage max. 4 scales. However, the number of scales which should be used is determined by
the application software package. Distinction between physical weighing electronics / scale (e.g. [internal],

Totalization of two scales is possible only on C = A+B.

Calibration, internal weighing electronics PR 5800/10
Calibration of the internal weighing electronics by means of weights, mV/V or load cell data can be done via
the keypad or via PC (using program VNC). The calibration data are protected by CAL switch (see chapter 4.1.1),
which is sealed in the 'safe' position for 'legal for trade' applications. During calibration, the instrument must
be set to gross weight display (reset tare, if necessary). For use in 'legal for trade' mode the selection of
settings has to be done according to the legal requirements and the conditions in the Test certificate and the
Type approval.
4.5.1
Calibration procedure
With legal for trade application, set the mode in -[Weighingpoints]-[internal A/B]-[Calib]-[Param] to
[W&M] before calibration start, see chapter 4.5.16.1. Press [New] to go to the maximum capacity [MAX] (see
chapter 4.5.5), select the scale interval and determine/enter the deadload. Now, calibrate the maximum
capacity by means of a test load, in mV/V or with load cell data. After determining the test value, the menu
can be left with
as described in chapter 4.5.14, in order to save or cancel the new settings.

Determining the maximum capacity (Max)
The maximum capacity (Max) determines the maximum weight without deadload of the weight, which must
be measured. Normally, Max is smaller than the load cell capacity (nominal capacity * number of load cells).

Unless the scale which has to be calibrated is legal for trade, calibration without weights is possible. A 'smart'
method only with load cell data without further calculation is described in chapter 4.5.9, with automatic
conversion of the gravitation at the place of manufacture into the value for the place of installation.
During entry of the load cell mV/V value, the gravitation at the place of installation can be taken into account.
The STAR load cell data are based on the gravitation of Hamburg: 9.81379 m/s².

scale/hopper is empty.

With changes of the hopper / platform weight e.g. due to deadload reduction, deadload increase or mechanical
changes by an amount which is higher than the zero set range, automatic zero tracking and manual zero
setting do not function. The range which is already utilized by zero tracking or zero setting can be displayed by
pressing key
in [Weighingpoints]-[internal A/B] with 10-fold weight resolution. Return is also with :

Entry in seconds, permissible range 0.01 to 2 sec. (max. Measuretime x 32). When setting time 0, stability

With [Range mode] = [Multiple range], the scale has max. 3 ranges with different resolutions.
The switch-over points [Range limit 1] and [Range limit 2] are the range limits. As soon as the gross weight
exceeds range 1, the next higher range with the next higher interval becomes valid (1->2->5->10->20->50>100->200). When reducing the weight, the interval of the previous range is kept. With the gross weight <=
0.25 d of range 1, the scale in stability and not tared, return is to range 1 with the corresponding interval.
Multi-interval scale
With [Range mode] = [Multi-interval], the scale has max. three ranges with different resolution. Each range
has the corresponding interval. Unlike [Multiple range], interval switch-over occurs also with weight reduction,
i.e. when the weight falls below the range limits.
During calibration, the multiple range / multi-interval function is always switched off.
The weight display header includes the current range (R1, R2, R3), Max, Min and d (or e with legal for trade
instruments) (Example: multiple range scale in range 2):

The physical weighing points can be allocated to logic weighing points (WP-A, WP-B, WP-C, WP-D), see
chapter 4.4. After allocation, the weighing points must be configured. Configuration is different dependent on

Combics Pro can communicate with scales (e.g. Combics1) or platforms (weighing modules) via the xBPI
protocol. Max. 2 instruments can be connected via serial interfaces (PR 5510/04 or Builtin) (see chapter 4.4).
Communication is serial. No variables or digital I/Os of the external scale are provided in the Combics Pro SPM.
Weight determination and transmission is largely dependent on scale / platform (weighing module). Weight
values up to 7 digits plus sign can be displayed. The maximum capacity (Max) must be adjusted in the scale or
is already set with a platform and cannot be changed via the xBPI protocol.

[Set zero key]
The function of the set zero key on the keypad can be limited to gross mode with [only when not tared]. If
[reset tare on zeroset] was selected, the set zero key switches over to gross mode automatically. If the
operation of the set zero key with these settings is without effect, the cause is that the adjusted zero set range
(around the zero set with the deadload) is already utilized by previous set zero operation and/or automatic
zero setting.
With [disabled], the key is without function.
[Software download]
To prevent a new application from being loaded into the instrument via the network (e.g. by means of
development tool PR 1750/60) and started, the download function can be protected with [protected by setup],
i.e. it can be re-enabled only via the keypad. With setting [always enabled], download is always possible.
[Keyclick duration]
The length of the signal tone output when pressing a key can be changed from 0 (off) to 10, 20, 30, <40>, 50,
100, 200 or 400.

5 Repair and maintenance
Repairs are subject to checking and can be done only at Sartorius. In case of defect or functional trouble,
please, contact your local Sartorius organization for repair. When returning the instrument for repair, an exact
and complete fault description must be supplied. Maintenance work may be carried out only by a trained
technician aware of the involved hazards and taking the relevant precautions.
5.1
Battery for calendar / time
The lithium battery for back-up of calendar/time chip and alibi memory is located on the processor board.
After delivery, the battery is already activated.
After initial instrument switch-on, the clock must always be set (date and time).
5.1.1
Battery replacement
The instrument is equipped with a lithium battery for back-up of the time/calendar chip and of the alibi
memory. When exceeding the specified min. battery voltage, or in case of defect, the battery must be replaced
by the Sartorius customer service or by an equivalent trained person. For discarding, see chapter 6.
The battery voltage is monitored, see chapter 5.1.1.For battery lifetime, see chapter 7.2.1.
5.1.2
Accumulator replacement
The instrument is fitted with an NiMH accumulator. In case of power failure / switch-off, processor
energization continues during approx. 1 minute for saving the actual status and controlled switch-off. When
exceeding the minimum specified supply voltage, or in case of defects, the accumulator must be replaced by
the Sartorius customer service or by an equivalent trained person. For discarding, see chapter 6.

Disposal
Solder work
Soldering work on the instrument is not necessary / permissible.
5.3
Cleansing
The units meet the EHEDG (European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group) guidelines for avoidance of
contaminations. It may be cleaned and desinfected easily.
!Disconnect the instrument from the supply voltage, remove connected data cables.
!Prevent moisture from penetrating into the instrument.
!Don’t use aggressive cleansing agents (solvents, etc.).

Cleanse the instrument using a cloth moistened in soap water.

With application in the foodstuffs industry, the permissible cleansers should be used.

Dry the instrument by means of a soft cloth.
!Splashing with water or blowing with compressed air are not permissible.
Cleansing the stainless steel surfaces
Cleanse all stainless steel parts regularly.
Cleanse stainless steel parts of the scale with a damp cloth or a sponge. Use only commercially available
household cleansing products which are suitable for stainless steel (e.g. Stahlfix). Cleanse stainless steel
surfaces simply by brushing with a cloth. Rinse carefully, until all residues are removed, and allow to dry. For
additional protection, a suitable oil can be applied.
Solvents should be used exclusively for cleansing stainless steel parts.
6 Disposal
Unless the packaging material is still required, discard it via the local facilities for refuse disposal. Only
ecologically compatible packaging material which is suitable for recycling is used.
Empty accumulators should not be discarded with the normal household refuse.
Discard empty accumulators in the local collecting boxes. On request, suitable
collecting boxes, e.g. provided by GRS (Stiftung Gemeinsames Rücknahmesystem
Batterien in Germany) are available from Sartorius.
Consult the local authorities for disposal of the complete instrument. Before
discarding, remove the accumulators. In Germany, legally correct disposal of the
instruments is offered by Sartorius.
In other countries, the local authorities should be consulted.

The instrument Combics Pro contains in the firmware 'Free Software', which is licensed under
GNU General Public License (GPL) Version 2, June 1991 and the
GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL) Version 2.1, February 1999.
These 'Free Software' developed by third parties is protected by copyright and is left free of charge.
The license terms and conditions of Free Software Foundation, Inc in English language are enclosed in the delivery
of the instrument.
The source text written under the above conditions is contained on the CD-ROM delivered with the
instrument.

The programmer shall be responsable for ensuring that any new applications that he writes on his own or any
modifications to the available application programs comply with the requirements of legal metrology.
Information on the meaning of the CAL-switches to be sealed can be found in chapter 4.1.1 , the respective
procedure is described in the document 'Schilder und Marken TN-PRO'.
It has to be observed, that the parameter settings (see chapter 4.5.15 ) have to be done according to the legal
requirements and the requirements of the EC Type approval and the EC Testcertificate. Furthermore the
settings and functions mentioned under point 7 (orders and conditions) in the Test certificate have to be
checked. The technician is responsable for selecting the legally permitted settings. The settings have to be
checked.
