Article 810 of the National Electrical Code ANSI/NFPA 70, provides information with regard to proper grounding of the mast an supporting structure, grounding of the leadin wire to an antenna discharge unit, size of grounding conductors, location of antennadischarge unit, connection to grounding electrodes, and requirements for the grounding electrode. Disconnect the antenna leads from the rear of the TV receiver. 2. Identify the type of cable from your antenna. If it is a round cable as illustrated, it is a 75-ohm coaxial antenna cable. This cable will connect directly to the connector marked "IN FROM ANT" on your VCR. ANTENNA WITH SEPARATE VHF-UHF If your antenna lead wire is a flat type antenna cable, connect it to the Antenna Adaptor (300-ohm to 75-ohm) (not supplied) and slip the Adaptor onto the "IN FROM ANT" terminal. The Adaptor does not screw onto the VCR, it just slips over the connector. LEADS 4. Connect the UHF Twin-lead Cable to the "UHF" terminals on the Antenna Mixer. 5. Slip the Antenna Mixer onto the "IN FROM ANT" terminal. 1. Disconnect the UHF/VHF twin leads on your television. 2. Locate Antenna Mixer(VHF/UHF 300-ohm to 75ohm) (not supplied). 3. Connect the VHF Twin-lead Cable to the "VHF" terminals on the Antenna Mixer. -6- VCR/TV CONNECTIONS :To "OUT TO TV" Antenna Adaptor accessory number 1.) (75-ohm to ohm) (not supplied) 300-ohm UHF IN 75-ohm VHF IN 1. Connect the 75-ohm Coaxial Cable with Antenna adaptor (accessory number 1) to "OUT TO TV" on the VCR. Connect the other end to the Antenna Splitter (75-ohm to VHF/UHF 300-ohm) (not supplied) or 75-ohm antenna input on back of TV, as illustrated above. 2. Connect the wires marked "UHF" on the Splitter to the UHF terminals on the rear of your television. ® 3. Connect the wires marked "VHF"'on the Splitter to the VHF terminals on the rear of your television. We will set it later. -7- CABLE ANTENNA (CATV) CONNECTION5 "Note to CATV system installer: This reminder is provided to call the CATV system instailer's atLention to _Sectlon 820-40 of the National Electric Code which provides guidelines for proper grounding and, in particular, specifies that the cable ground shall be connected to the grounding system of the building, as close to the point of cable entry as practical". Diagram No. 1 This hook-up permits the recording of cable channels except for scrambled channels. At the same time, you may watch any cable channel selected by the cable converter (with A-B Switch in B position). Diagram To watch the playback picture from the VCR, set the A-B Switch to the A position. If you connect your VCR like this, set the A-B switch to the A position for VCR Plus+programming. No. 2 NOTES: 1. The 2-Set Coupler and the A-B Switch are not supplied and should be purchased locally. The cable converter is normally supplied by the cable company. 2. There are other possible connections than shown here. Their use depends upon the type of cable system you have and on the type of equipment you wish to connect. Please consult with your local Sears Store or Service Department. This hook-up permits the recording of any channel(including scrambled premium channels). At the same time, you may view any channel except those that are scrambled. To wew scrambled channels, put the A-B Switch in the A position. (In this position, you cannot watch one channel and record another.) To use this hook-up, you should have a cable compatible television receiver. The on screen overlays will appear momentarily as a clear indication that a main function or a channel has been changed with the remote control or at the VCR. Whenever a function button (Stop, FF, etc.) is pressed, or when you change channels, a 4 second OSD appears. The function name and the channel number (if tuned) are displayed as a overlay for 3 seconds. DAY DISPLAY (SUN_SA'r) DATE DISPLAY (MONTH/DAY/YEAR) NOTE: The on-screen display will not be recorded. Press once Press twice - 9 - Press three times IDENTIFICATION AND OPERATION OF CONTROLS Now that you have experienced the simple operation of your VCR, let's get familiar with the complete operation of your VCR and all its capabilities. To see and hear the signal from these jacks, press the "INPUT SELECT" button to light the "r'_ "indicator in the VCR's display panel. "VHF/UHF OUTPUT" 75-ohm round Cable Connector connects to this output. Opposite end of cable connects to the television through the Antenna Splitter if necessary (not supplied). RF CHANNEL SELECT SWITCH Slide the switch to "CH3" or "CH4" to match the channel selector on your TV. This is the VCR channel on your television set. -10- I FRONT 1 "POWER" ON/OFF BUTTON Press to turn the power on. When the VCR is tun_ed on, the display window will get brighter. The indicator will illuminate. To turn the unit off, press the button again. If the VCR has been programed and the power is switched OFF, the VCR will go into a timer recording standby status. (The "(_ " indicators will go ON.) CASSETTE LOADING DOOR When a cassette is inserted, loading will be +_fcompleted automatically and the Cassette '_+:_ indicator ( _--_ ) will light. NOTES: 1. Power is turned on automatically when the cassette is loaded. 2. When a cassette with erase prevention tab removed is inserted, playback will start automatically. ("AUTO PLAYBACK FUNCTION") CAUTION: Do not put your finger or other objects behind the Cassette Door because of the risk of injury. Particulary, keep small children away from the unit. AUDIO LEVEL INDICATORS REW/_J PLAY(X2) FF/ _,_ L-AUDIO IN-R VIDEO IN POWER REMOTE CONTROL RECEIVER This sensor window receives the signals from the wireless remote control. CHANNEL SELECT BUTTONS You can scan up or down through all the memorized channels using the Channel Select buttons (A or v). AUDIO IN JACKS (L!R) Connect CAMCORDER or other audio output to this jack for dubbing or editing functions. STOP/EJECT BUTTON If this button is pressed, while the set is operating, the running of tape stops and all operating modes are cancelled (except for timer recording). Press this button to eject a cassette in the stop mode. NOTE: Power may be on or off when removing the cassette. VIDEO IN JACK Connect CAMCORDER or other video output to this jack for dubbing or editing functions. -11 - "FF" FAST FORWARD/ "VISUAL SEARCH" FORWARD SEARCH Press "FF" button during stop or rewind mode, and fast forwarding starts. " F-F " indication appears on the Display. Press the button during playback of tape. The tape is played back in the forward direction approximately 15 times faster than the normal speed (EP recorded tape), 9 times faster than the normal speed(LP recorded tape) or 5 times faster than the normal speed (SP recorded tape) to confirm the recorded content. Press "PLAY (x2)" button to return to normal playback mode or press "STOP" button to stop tape movement. Sound is muted during "VISUAL SEARCH" mode. "REW" REWIND/ "VISUAL SEARCH" REVERSE SEARCH Press_"REW" button during Stop or Fast forward mode and fast rewinding starts. _E-_ indication appears on the Display. Press the button during playback of tape. The tape is played back in the rewind direction approximately 15 times faster than the normal speed (EP recorded tape), 9 times faster than the normal speed (LP recorded tape) or 5 times faster than the normal speed (SP recorded tape) to confirm the recorded contents. Press "PLAY (x2)" button to return to normal playback mode or press "STOP" button to stop tape movement. The VCR is in the stop mode • Lit indicators move to the right ( _ ) ...The tape is advancing in the forward direction. • Lit indicators move to the left ( :'_---) ...The tape is advancing in the rewind direction. ®,, ,,INDICATOR Illuminates when the "VCR" is selected by "VCR/'I-V" selector. ,,r_ ,, indicator is off when "IV" is selected. (_TAPE SPEED INDICATORS ( "SP", "LP" and "EP" ) Indicates the speed selected by the "TAPE SPEED" button. NOTE: This VCR is not designed to record in LP mode. The AUDIO MODE SET feature must be set to STEREO. (_)SAP INDICATOR This indicator lights when the station you are tuned to is broadcasting SAP, and the AUDIO MODE SET feature is set to SAP. (_)REMAINING TAPE TIME INDICATOR " _ " lights on the display along with the remaining tape time in hour and minutes after the "CLOCK/COUNT/REMAIN" is pressed. _) MEMORY INDICATOR Indicates when the "CLOCK/COUNT/REMAIN" button is pressed with counter memory mode. @ MINUS INDICATOR (-) The symbol is minus sign of the COUNT indicator, @AM/PM INDICATOR (_) FUNCTION INDICATORS Shows the operation mode of VCR (CLOCK, CHANNEL, PLAY, STILL, REC, EJECT, PAUSE, CUE, REV, STOP, AN, REW, FF...etc.) "TIMER" INDICATOR Indicates the VCR is in the timer recording standby mode. -13- MBR (Multi Brand Remote) REMOTE CONTROL The remote control is used for most of the operations and features of the VCR. CABLE OPERATION If cable television is available in your area, it can be received on your new VCR by subscribing to your local cable television company. Cable TV channels will then be supplied into your home through a cable. Your local cable television company can advise you of the channels available in your area and any special adaptors that may be required. To receive cable channels, set the TV/CATV selector to the CAI-V position (SET UP menu). CATV CHANNEL NUMBERS Your VCR can receive some cable channels in addition to the regular channels (VHF 2-13, UHF 14-69). Cable channels are identified by a number or in some cases, are the same as used by UHF channels. Cable channels are considered to be VHF channels(not UHF). When the VCR's power is OFF, or when the VCR's power is ON and the TV/VCR selector is set to TV, the TV will operate as if it were connected directly to the antenna or cable. NOTES: • The power cord must be plugged into an AC outlet. • To view or record cable TV programs with the VCR, the VCR's TV/CATV selector must be set to "CATV" (SET UP menu). TAB CASSETTE LOADING AND UNLOADING LOADING UNLOADING Hold the cassette with the arrow side up(top). Insert the cassette gently into the slot in the direction of the arrow (on the cassette) until the loading mechanism automatically pulls the cassette into the unit. Make certain that the cassette is inserted correctly. Press the STOP/EJECT button twice. The cassette will be ejected automatically. After the cassette is visible in the tape slot, pull it out to remove it. Unloading the cassette is possible only when the power cord is connected to the wall outlet. Label (Arrow side up) CST. The cassette indicator will light. At this time, the VCR is automatically turned on(AUTO POWER ON). Turn the TV set ON, and select channel 3 or 4, the same as VCR's output channel. NOTE:If a direct VIDEO/AUDIO connection is made between the VCR and TV, set the source selector on the television to VIDEO. Press the PLAY(X2) button once. • It is not necessary to select the tape speed for playback. It will be automatically selected by the VCR. • In playback, the position of the TV/VCR Selector is automatically set to the VCR position. • "PLAY" appears on the VCR indicator panel and on the TV screen momentarily. Press the STOP button to stop playback. "STOP" appears on the VCR indicator panel and TV screen momentarily. • The unit has AUTOMATIC REWIND. At the very end. of the tape, the VCR will automatically stop and rewind the tape. El • ReW/_ _ TRACKING CONTROL FFt_ AUTO TRACKING Usually automatic tracking function adjusts the picture. (The "AUTO TRK" indicator lights on the VCR indicator panel and TV screen). The AUTO TRACKING function works in the following cases. • A tape is played back for the first time. • Tape speed(SP, LP, EP) changes. • Streaks or snow appear because of scratches on the tape. • AUTO TRACKING was pressed after manually adjusting the tracking. If it is, press the POWER button once. • This VCR is equipped with an Auto Power on system, which operates when a cassette is inserted into the VCR. Additionally, the unit will start "auto play" if a tape is inserted without its record protect tab in place. - 31 - If noise appears on the screen during playback, press either "V" or "A" until the noise on the screen is reduced or eliminated. NOTES: • In case of vertical jitter in still mode carefully adjust these controls for a stable picture. • Tracking is automatically reset to normal when the tape is ejected or the power cord is unplugged. VISUAL SEARCH (F-SEARCH AND R-SEARCH) When you press "FF(I_I_ )" (Forward SEARCH) or "REW(,,)" (Reverse SEARCH) button during playback, the tape will be played back at a speed about 15 times faster than the normal playback speed (EP recorded tape), 9 times faster than the normal playback speed (LP recorded tape), or 5 times faster than the normal playback speed (SP recorded tape), and you can easily locate a certain spot on the tape. - PICTURE SEARCH. °00 "PLAY(X2)" Button _o ® ® ® 6)@@ ® ® ® NOTE: • During playback, press either search button (FF or REW) to begin visual search. When you have reached the desired point on the tape, press the "PLAY (x2)" button again so that the unit enters the normal playback mode. Otherwise, speed search continues for about 3 minutes, after which time the PLAY mode is resumed. @ @ Q 0 o Q 0 While holding down "FF" or "REW" button during the fast forward or rewind mode, the picture will be viewed at 5 times faster than the normal playback speed (SP recorded tape), 9 times faster than the normal playback speed (LP recorded tape), or at 15 times faster than the normal playback speed (EP recorded tape). To release the fast forward or rewind mode, press "PLAY(X2)', or "STOP" button. - LOGIC SEARCH. While you hold down "FF" or "REW" button during the picture search mode, the picture will be viewed at 9 times faster than the normal playback speed (SP recorded tape), at a speed about 17 times faster than the normal playback speed (LP recorded tape) or at 27 times faster than the normal playback speed (EP recorded tape). - RAPID PICTURE SEARCH. When you have reached the desired point of the tape, release the REW or FF button so that the VCR enters the normal playback mode. I o NOTE: The F Search and R Search features are intended for use with SP or EP recording. The LP recordings will contain too much noise (interference) to produce a viewable picture. This feature can be used for eliminating unwanted station breaks or program material while recording a TV program or when using a camera from one scene to another. To start again press "PAUSE/STILL" button, and " p " indication will go off and the VCR will continue recording. When "PAUSE/STILL" button is pressed during playback, " 5T I L L " will appear and a still picture can be seen. To start again press "PLAY(X2)" or "PAUSE/STILL" button and the VCR will continue playback. NOTES: 1. If a noise band is seen during STILL, first press "SLOW" button and "TRACKING" (" • " or " • ") button to eliminate the noise. Q (_) ® ® ® ® O ® ® 3. When the PAUSE (STILL) mode continues for more than about 5 minutes, the VCR will automatically change to stop mode to protect the tape. 2. The tape recorded at LP mode will contain more noise and flagging than the tape recorded at SP or EP mode. FRAME ADVANCE Every time you press "F/ADV" (Frame Advance) button in the STILL (play pause) mode, tape will be played back one frame at a time. It operates only after "PAUSE/STILL" button has been pressed. Press the "PLAY(X2)" button to resume normal playback. DOUBLE SPEED PLAYBACK When "PLAY (x2)" button is pressed during playback mode, a double speed playback picture of the normal speed (SP or EP recorded tape) can be seen. Press "PLAY (X2)" button to return to the normal playback mode, and the VCR will continue playback. NOTES: 1. During double speed playback, a certain amount of noise may appear on the screen. If so, press "TRACKING" ("• " or " • ") button to find the position at which the least amount of noise Occurs. 2. When you press "SLOWA " button, the speed becomes faster. Press "PLAY (X2)" button to return to normal playback speed or press "STOP" button to stop tape movement. NOTES: 1. The Slow feature is intended for use with SP and EP recordings. The LP recordings will contain too much noise (interference) to produce a viewable picture. 2. During slow playback, "TRACKING" buttons on the Remote Control can be used to minimize noise bands. 3. When the slow mode continues for more than about 3 minutes, the VCR will automatically change to play mode to protect the tape from damage. AUTO PLAYBACK FUNCTION When a cassette with erase prevention tab removed is inserted, playback will start automatically. This •automatic function eliminates the need for pressing "PLAY (X2)" button. 1. Inserting a cassette into the Cassette Loading Slot automatically switches on the VCR's power. (Auto Power-on) 2. The VCR starts playback automatically. (Auto Playback) 3. At the end of the tape, the tape automatically rewinds to the beginning. (Auto Rewind) 4. The cassette is ejected automatically when the tape has finished rewinding. (Auto Eject) 5. Auto power off. NOTE: The cassette can be ejected when the EJECT button is pressed, even if the VCR's power is OFE (Auto Power-off-eject) - 34 - ® ® @ ® VISS (VHS INDEX SEARCH SYSTEM)/TIME SEARCH The VHS INDEX SEARCH SYSTEM enables you to locate the beginning of any recording made on this VCR. Whenever a recording is begun, an invisible INDEX mark is recorded on the tape. This feature makes use of VISS signals to search out a specified tape segment and begin playback automatically. • PLAYING BACK THE BEGINNING EACH PROGRAM IN SEQUENCEVISS SCAN OF 1. Insert a cassette tape that has VISS signals marked. 2. Press the VISS button once, while a tape is playing. The "VISS 00" indicator will appear on the -IV screen. 3. Press either the FF or REW button, VISS will start. The indicator appears simultaneously during scanning. The tape will be rewound or rapidly advanced to the next signal marked. The tape will be played back for approximately 5 seconds, and then rewound or rapidly advanced to the next VISS signal. Every time a VISS signal is detected and playback begins, the displayed VISS scan number appears. ("V.SCAN 00") 4. At the desired program, press the VISS button. Normal playback of that program will begin. • LOCATING THE DESIRED -VISS SEARCH PROGRAM You can locate the desired program and play it back automatically by designating the number of its VISS signal. Up to the 99th VISS signal from the present position on the tape can be located. 1. Press the VISS button once during playback. 2. Press the numbered buttons (0_9) which corresponds to the number of VISS codes to be passed on the way to the VISS destination from the present tape location (up to 99 codes can be detected on an individual tape). 3. Press either the FF or REW button briefly. The "V.SEARCH 00" appears on the display. When the desired VISS signal recorded section is found, playback begins automatically. - 35 - • TIME SEARCH TIME Search allows you to skip ahead or back. When the time search is completed, the VCR automatically goes into stop mode. 1. Press the VISS/TIME button twice during playback. The TIME SEARCH 0:00 indicator will appear on the VCR display panel and -IV screen. 2. First, press a number button for the hour. Now, press two number buttons for the minute. (For example, for 1 hour 25 minutes, press 1, 2, 5. For 5 minutes, press 0, 0, 5.) 3. Press the FF or REW button to skip ahead or back. The VCR will skip over the desired length of time and go into STOP mode automatically. MAKING A SAMPLE RECORDING 1. Insert the Cassette with the transparent window up and the arrow pointing toward the Cassette Loading Door. Push the cassette in until the VCR mechanism starts to pull the cassette into the opening. NOTES: 1. When the cassette is loaded, the power is turned on automatically. 2. Be sure to check that the erase prevention tab is not missing. If it is removed, the VCR goes into playback mode automatically. 2. Press "INPUT SELECT" button on the remote control so as to select Channel Number Display. 3. Turn on TV and tune to the VCR Channel (Channel 3 or 4). 4. Press Channel Select button (A or V) on the VCR or remote control to select the channel to be recorded. @ ® ® ® @ ® ® ® ® - 36 - 5. RECORDING WHILE YOU ARE AWAY (You can use Programmable Timer or VCR Plus+) Be sure that the clock is set to the correct time. (Refer to "CLOCK SETTING" on page 28.) 1. Insert the cassette. NOTE: Before starting check that the erase prevention tab is not missing. If it is removed, recording will not start. 3. Press "POWER" ON/OFF TIMER indication Display. button to OFF. At that point, power will cease to be supplied to prevent the recorded tape from being overlapped. You can continue timer recording within programmed time when a new tape is inserted. 3. Set the time and date before proceeding. • The buttons for programming the timer are on the remote control. • While you are programming the timer, the "Menu display" on the TV screen will prompt you through the procedures. • The display contents will be switched to the -IV screen automatically if it is left on without further steps for about 3 minutes. • Make sure batteries are installed in the remote control. • Make sure a tape is in the VCR. • You can correct an error in the program, any time before the last step by pressing "CLEAR" button repeatedly until the digit to be corrected flashes and then by entering the corrections. The memory feature allows you to return to a specific spot on the cassette after recording or playing. The memory works with the Counter to return to a particular spot on the cassette. The memory is designed to stop when the counter reaches "0:00:00" during rewind (REW). This does not mean that the recorded program has been erased. • Dirt accumulation on the head after long periods of use can cause these problems. • If high quality video tapes are used in this VCR, the video heads should not normally require cleaning: however it is possible that the heads may become clogged when playing an old or damaged tape. If the image on your screen resembles the picture on the left, while playing back a tape, the heads may require cleaning. oTo clean the heads, obtain a head cleaning tape from your local video dealer. Be sure to follow the instructions that come with the cleaning tape, as excessive use can shorten head life. - 58 - OPERATING HINTS .... • After you have finished using the VCR, rewind, eject and remove the cassette. Place the cassette in its protective sleeve to protect it from dust. It is not necessary to rewind the cassette before removing it, but if you do, it will be ready to play or record the next time you use it. • Be sure the VCR "CHANNEL" selector is on the correct channel you wish to record. The channel that is being recorded can always be checked by setting the television on the VCR channel (3 or 4) and setting the "VCR/TV" selector to "VCR". • Always reset the "COUNTER" to "0:00:00" when you start using a cassette. Make a note on the cassette what number the "COUNTER" reads when the recording is finished. Any other locations on the tape can be noted on the cassette label also, if desired so you can quickly locate them later. • Do not attempt to hook up more than one television set to the VCR for either recording or playback. • ERASE PREVENTION TAB If you wish to save a recording and prevent accidental erasure, remove the erase prevention tab from the cassette. This will prevent recording on the cassette. Later, if you wish to record, stick two layers of cellophane tape over the opening. VCR TO VCR DUBBING If you wish to exchange or copy some of your friend's favorite home recordings, the following instructions can be used to connect on VCR to another for this purposed.
