Jahr kommen neue hinzu.
Bitte schaue in Deinem
Gleitschirmbetriebshandbuch nach, ob dies der Fall ist.
8
AUSSTATTUNG

Normalerweise also alle 6 Monate, spätestens jedoch nach 12 Monate.

31
THE SKYWALK TEAM
At skywalk, we are fascinated by the power of the wind. The interaction between wind and cloth has excited the imagination of man for hundreds of years, resulting in the invention and testing of new means of transportation again and again…
Because we are lucky enough to live in the 21st century, we have loads of technical possibilities at our fingertips and every year new ones are invented. Whether it’s a paraglider in the air, a surf kite on the water and in the air, or a sailboat in its element, all of these sports have one thing in common: the wind is their driving force.
32
It’s our goal at skywalk to perfect the art of travel via wind power and to find new, undiscovered ways to enjoy it.
If we manage to transfer our enthusiasm for the elements air and water to our products, then those who get their kick with air and water sports will profit too.
33
INTRODUCTION
The RANGE AIR was conceptualized by the skywalk development team as a paraglider harness for paragliding. Base-jumping, skydiving or the use of the RANGE-AIR as a climbing harness with all of its variations is not appropriate for its intended use and is forbidden. The RANGE AIR harness is suitable for XC occasional pilots up to hike & fly competition pilots who want to optimize their equipment in terms of weight and aerodynamics.
The geometry and the 3D seat construction of this harness support the pilot during long
XC flights while constantly giving direct feedback to the wing. To ensure a long life, the materials used require careful, professional treatment.
The leg and chest straps are equipped with the so-called ”get-up” safety system that prevents the pilot from falling out of the harness. Safety has been increased further through the integrated ram-air protector, that protects the pilot’s back in the case of a hard impact. The RANGE AIR can be flown with all paragliders as long as the paraglider manufacturer doesn’t require a special harness. Please consult your paraglider manual to see if this is the case.
34
FEATURES
Ram-Air to protect your back
The RANGE AIR is a harness with an integrated ramair protector. The ram-air protector is divided into main and rear compartments, so that in the case of a hard impact not all of the air can escape at once. The
RANGE AIR was developed to absorb as much of the energy of impact as possible and to provide maximum protection to the pilot in an accident. However, the harness cannot completely eliminate the risk of injury.
3D Seat Harness
The 3D “single layer” seat harness was designed with the use of complex software to conform to the pilot’s anatomy. The harness offers the pilot a variety of possibilities to make individual adjustments to the back area. The RANGE AIR does not have a seat board.
Side Pockets
The two side pockets offer attachment points and storage space for small objects such as a digital camera or a cereal bar. The objects should be secured so that you don’t lose them during launch or in flight.
Rear Storage Compartment
The rear storage compartment was designed as large as possible to avoid unpleasant pressure points due to the “single layer” seat harness. A small plastic clip makes it possible to make the compartment smaller. A small Camelbak (max. 1.5l) can be attached to the velcro fastener.
35
A small rubber patch marks the spot where you can pass your drinking tube through to the shoulder strap.
Due to the closed compartment system it is not possible to put your equipment in the ram-air protector as you would in a normal harness as this would cause the air vent to be blocked, rendering its protection useless.
Ensure that the zipper of the rear storage compartment is closed before you take off!
Cockpit
The cockpit offers enough room for 3-4 flight instruments and has an additional pocket on the back side that can be zipped shut. Here you can store replacement batteries, cereal bars or other small objects.
There are also attachment points on the inside and the outside of the cockpit.
The cockpit can be secured to one of the carabiners with the short line sewn to it and the whole cockpit can be quickly removed when packing without having to take out individual instruments.
36
Front Reserve Parachute Container
The RANGE AIR is equipped with a front reserve parachute container that attaches to the main carabiners. The speed bag’s closing system has to pass through two additional loops on the bottom side of the rescue container.
Speedbar
The RANGE AIR is delivered with a 2-step speed system.
ASSEMBLY
Your RANGE AIR harness should be set up and checked by your dealer. The first time you set it up it is especially important to perform a compatibility check with your reserve parachute. After that, you should make your own initial adjustments while sitting in a harness simulator.
Main Carabiners
Each main carabiner should pass through a total of four loops directly attached to the seat. In addition, one line on each side connects to the top of the footboard, and then passes through two harness loops to secure the speedbag.
37
Connecting the seat to the footboard
The line running from the main carabiner passes through a channel attached to the side and is then connected to the desired position in the knot string on the top of the footboard using a larks-head knot.
On the front of the seat you will find additional attachment loops on each side that should also be used to attach the line to the desired position on the bottom of the footboard using the same knot.
Speedbag Closing System
Attach the line for the closing system on both sides to the top of the footboard with a larks-head knot. After that, pass the line through the channel on the side and then slip it through the small metal ring on the outside of the harness. Finally, slip the line over the plastic ball and adjust the length.
38
Speedbar
Attach the speedbar to the bottom of the footboard with a bowline knot and run the lines up inside the speedbag, through the pulley, and then out through the opening in the side of the harness.
MOUNTING THE FRONT RESERVE PARACHUTE
The RANGE AIR can be combined with most reserve parachutes available in the market.
The initial installation should be carried out by a certified compatibility checker who will verify that your reserve parachute deploys properly and will certify its compatibility in the reserve’s packing certificate.
It is important for the pilot to perform the test deployment of the reserve parachute himself while sitting in the harness in a simulator because the results of the test are affected by body size and strength.
Before installation, ensure that the rescue parachute has been packed recently. The pack interval is normally every six months, but verify this by reading the information in the user manual of the rescue parachute. Make sure that you have all the necessary assembly parts such as the screw shackles.
39
40
The reserve parachute consists of the parachute itself, the red rescue handle, the V-shaped bridle and the front container. The rescue handle on the front container is part of the RANGE AIR harness. This is the only rescue handle that may be used.
When installing the rescue parachute in the RANGE
AIR front container, be sure to attach the rescue handle to the loop in the middle of the rescue parachute and not to a loop on the side. Connect the rescue parachute to the V-bridle using a shackle with at least
2400 daN mechanical strength, such as a Maillon Rapide 6mm screw shackle.
Secure the connecting lines on both sides of the shackle with rubber rings. The use of webbed straps is not recommended because they can slip if the attachment is asymmetric and could tear due to the high heat of friction during a rescue deployment.
Once the rubber rings have been installed, the front container can be closed.
Lay the front container in front of you as in the photo below and place the lines of the V-bridle in a S-shape neatly and without twisting in the container. Make sure that both ends of the V-bridle (red for the left side, green for the right side) stick out of the container toward the velcro cockpit and are connected to the inside of the velcro.
After that, lay the rescue parachute on top of the V-bridle lines in the middle of the front container.
Next, close the container flaps by running of two plastic wires or pieces of line through the two anchor loops attached to the bottom flap up through the grommets in the remaining flaps. Install the rescue handle between the two loops and then finish off by drawing the container together with the plastic wires or pieces of line, and then inserting the two splints from the rescue handle through the loops.
Don´t forget to remove the lines or plastic wires after inserting the splints!

Next, attach the chest strap of the RANGE AIR to the front container using the velcro channel.
Finally, pass the frame buckle through the strap on each side of the container.
Before every launch, close the “get up” system with the two frame buckles and connect the reserve parachute to the harness by hooking the ends of the two V-bridle lines into the main carabiner on each side.
To ensure that the rescue handle is easily reachable and still deployable in the event of a line twist, make sure that the speedbag closing system passes through both loops on the outside of the front container.
SET-UP AND ADJUSTMENTS
The RANGE AIR is available in sizes S, M and L and should be set up and adjusted exactly to match your needs. Before your first flight, you should carry out the set-up in a sitting position with the harness hanging in a simulator. The individual adjustments depend on the shape of your body, your personal preferences, and your flying style. Finer adjustments can be made gradually after a few flights. Naturally the reserve parachute must be installed before making the adjustments.
Shoulder Straps
The optimal setting depends on the height of the pilot.
First, put on the harness, close the chest and leg straps, and stand upright. Pull on the shoulder straps adjustments symmetrically to the point where they just begin to tighten up. While flying, the straps should sit firmly on the shoulders.
Side Straps
The RANGE AIR has an adjustment on each side that changes the angle of the back of the harness and three additional plastic adjusters for the hip and waist that can be adjusted independently to support your body. skywalk’s recommended sizes are just guidance values and can vary depending on how you are built. For this reason, we recommend the following steps to help you find the right size and make the right adjustments:
43
Size
Pilot height (cm)
S
< 170
M
170 ~ 183
L
>182
Back length
The back length is ideal when the harness reaches up to your spine between C1 and C7.
Speedbag length
The speedbag can be adjusted using the knot string on the footboard as mentioned in section 5 “Assembly”. Select the length so that the elastic material of the speedbag is slightly under tension. If the pilot’s height corresponds to the selected size but the back of the harness does not quite fit right, try adjusting the length of the speedbag.
Dyneema mounts
The Dyneema mounts for the main carabiners located directly underneath the seat area cannot be adjusted and should be under tension. For example, if the second mount
(viewed from the front edge of the seat looking toward the back) is not under tension, then the speedbag is probably set too short and the pilot is sitting too high in the harness.

FLYING WITH THE RANGE AIR HARNESS
Pre-flight check
To maximize your safety, it is best always to follow the same routine when you do your pre-flight check.
Check that:
> no visible damage to the harness or carabiners is present that can affect
airworthiness.
> the reserve parachute container is correctly closed and is connected to the harness, and that the splints are threaded completely through the loops, and that the rescue handle is correctly mounted.
> all buckles, straps and zippers are shut and secured. Give each strap a light tug to verify this. If snow or sand is present, then pay especially close attention.
> the paraglider is correctly hooked to the harness and that both carabiners are correctly closed and secure.
> the speedbar is properly hooked into the speed system in the risers.
> all pockets are closed and that no loose items are hanging around.
> the air inlets of the ram-air protector are open. This will avoid a malfunction of the ram-air protector.
> again, all leg and chest straps are closed before you launch!
What to do if you need to deploy the reserve parachute
> Look for the rescue handle and grip it firmly in one hand.
> Pull the handle firmly to the side to remove the reserve parachute from the container of the harness.
> Make sure that you throw the reserve parachute into a free and open area.
> If possible, throw the reserve parachute in the opposite direction of any rotation and let go of the rescue handle!
> As soon as the reserve parachute opens, try to keep it from getting caught in your paraglider and avoid any oscillations. It’s best to pull the paraglider towards you using the B, C or D lines, or with the brake lines.
> When you land, stand as straight as possible and try to use the parachute landing fall technique to minimize your risk of injury.
45
What to do in emergency situations and extreme flight conditions
Disturbances of the paraglider that are caused by thermal lift or turbulence are transmitted perceptibly via the harness mounts to the RANGE AIR’s board-less seat. To avoid getting tipped to the side, make sure that you are always sitting in the middle of the seat shell. Also make sure that you don’t lose your grip on the brake handles so that you can react quickly and without delay to extreme flight conditions. Read about the behavior of your glider in extreme flight conditions in the appropriate manual. Should you fly into an object or land in a tree, be calm and notify the authorities. To rescue a pilot, the speedbag and the “get-up” system can be opened fully.
MISCELLANEOUS
Winch-towing
The RANGE AIR is suitable for winch-towing launches. There are no special attachments for this type of launch. The tow release is attached either to the main carabiners or even better to a tow adapter that extends beyond the ends of the risers before these are hooked to the carabiners. Follow the instructions of the tow release and the tow adapter or ask a flight instructor who is experienced with paraglider towing.
Tandem flight
The RANGE AIR is not a suitable harness for tandem flight.
Safety training and flying over water
We do not recommend using the RANGE AIR for flying over water or for safety training. It is possible that the ram-air protector of the harness could force the pilot under water after a water landing. For this reason: Be careful when flying over water!
Nature environmental friendly behavior
Obey the appropriate rules and guidelines in your flying area. This is important not only to ensure that we can continue to practice our wonderful sport, but also not to endanger our flying areas.
46
MAINTENANCE, CARE AND REPAIRS
The selected materials used in the RANGE AIR make it necessary to treat them carefully and in a professional manner. Make an effort to take care of your harness and keep it clean to preserve its airworthiness over the longest possible time.
Maintenance and care
Avoid dragging your harness over stony ground and always try to land standing up. Don’t leave your harness lying in the sun unnecessarily long. UV radiation is very damaging to the material.
Keep your harness in a paraglider rucksack when not using it. Store your paragliding equipment loosely packed in a cool and dry place. If it gets wet, always dry out your equipment before packing it. To clean it, just use a brush or a damp cloth. Use mild soap to clean it only when absolutely necessary. If you do, first remove other parts like the reserve parachute. Avoid brushing the inside of the ram-air protector. The coating of the material can be damaged by brushing or rubbing. Let the harness dry in a well-ventilated, shady place if it was wet. If the reserve parachute gets wet, (e.g. during a water landing), then it is necessary to open it up, let it dry, and pack it again. After a hard landing, check the ram-air protector for damage. A tear or a broken seam in the ram-air protector can ruin the protector’s functionality! In such a case, the protector must be repaired before the next use of the harness. Zippers should be treated with silicon spray once a year.
Maintenance checklist
In addition to your normal preflight procedure, you should also take a close look at your
RANGE AIR after the reserve parachute has been packed and re-installed – normally every six months but no later than every twelve months. Naturally, it´s also important to check your harness closely after unusual circumstances, for example after a hard landing or a tree landing, or if the harness shows above-average wear and tear. When in doubt, always consult an expert.
47
Here’s what to check:
> Check all straps and buckles for wear and tear and damage.
> The stitching of all seams should be checked and, if in doubt, should be repaired to keep problems from propagating.
> Special attention should be given to the installation of the rescue parachute, in particular the splints and the velcro.
> Both aluminum carabiners should be renewed after no more than five years or maximum 500 flight hours. Impact to the carabiners can result in invisible damage that could lead to failure during use.
The documentation for service work should be entered on page 22 with the name of the repairperson, stamp and signature.
Repairs
All repairs made to load-bearing parts of the harness must be carried out by the manufacturer or an authorized repair shop to ensure that correct materials and workmanship are used.
Environmentally friendly disposal of the harness
When the harness after many years of service is no longer needed, please ensure that it is disposed of properly in an environmentally friendly way according to appropriate environmental norms and valid laws.
