Test Pumps

HD 250 and HD 1000

1. Safety Instructions

Read these operating instructions carefully prior to operating the HD 250 or HD 1000 hydraulic manual spindle pump. The pressure inside the pump can be extremely high. Ensure that all pressure connections have been secured correctly.

4

2. Product Description

Test pumps are used to generate pressures for checking, adjusting and calibrating mechanical and electronic pressure measuring instruments by comparative measurements. These pressure tests may be carried out in laboratories, workshops or on site at the measuring point.

If the instrument to be tested and a sufficiently accurate referencemeasuring instrument are connected to the test pump, the same pressure is applied to the two measuring instruments when the pump is operated. By comparing the two measured values at random pressure values, the accuracy can be verified or the instrument under test can be adjusted. The test pumps are equipped with fine adjustment valves to make it possible to approach measuring points precisely. Another important feature of the pumps is the rotating spindles that only run inside the body of the pump. This eliminates the negative effect of a bending torque on a spindle turning outside the body and offers the advantage, especially for use in the field, that the dimensions of these pumps do not change during operation due to the spindle turning.

They are equipped with three G ½" female threaded connections for the test specimen and the reference instrument (2 above in the rear flange and 1 on the side) which can be used in any order.

Initial pressures of up to 250 bar are possible in the low-pressure cylinder for type HD 1000. After the star handle connection has been moved onto the high-pressure cylinder, the maximum pressure of 1000 bar can be reached. The fine adjustment valve can be used on both types to make precise adjustments. For measuring instruments with larger volumes, medium filling containers (300 cm³) are available for both types.

Connect the star handle (1) onto the spindle.

Move the variable volume to the middle position with the setscrew (9). This will allow you to make the best possible use of the pre-set pressure fine adjustment (for increasing and reducing the pressure).

Use the star handle (1) to turn the spindle (or both spindles for the HD 1000) counterclockwise back as far as the spindle(s) will go without exerting any great force. This makes full use of the stroke.

Check the pump to make certain the filling level is adequate. To do this, first open one of the test connections (7) in the distributor block and turn the low-pressure spindle (2) slowly clockwise. If the filling medium becomes visible in the opened test connection while you do this and no air bubbles escape, then the low-pressure piston is sufficiently filled. If air bubbles do escape, however, you must top-up the filling medium as described under section 4.3.

WIKA Operating Instructions Test Pumps

5

6

For the HD 1000, follow the same procedure with the highpressure piston (5b). As you do so, the low-pressure piston (5a) must remain screwed out as far as it will go.

Connect the reference instrument (for example hand-held pressure measuring instrument CPH 6200) onto the side test connection (8) of the pump (please note measuring range!)

Connect a test specimen to one of the pump's test connections (7).

We recommend the use of quick seals (see item 8 order data / accessories) to make the seal between the test specimens and the test connections. These seals allow the test specimens to be mounted without using a spanner. For leak-proof connections up to 1000 bar, finger-tight fastening of these connections is sufficient.

4. Operation of the manual spindle pump

4.1 Handling the HD 250

The maximum permissible pressure for the HD 250 is 250 bar.

Higher pressures may damage the pump. The reference instrument, test specimen and any connecting tubes that are used must not be subjected to pressures above the maximum permissible level.

4.1.1 Increasing the Pressure

Turning the star handle (1) clockwise moves the piston in the low-pressure cylinder in the direction of the rear flange (6). This compresses the filling medium. The result is a pressure reading or an electrical pressure signal for the reference instrument and the test specimen.

Rotate clockwise until you have almost reached the required pressure.

To make fine adjustments to the initial pressure setting, screw the fine adjustment valve (9) in or out.

WIKA Operating Instructions Test Pumps

Test Pumps

HD 250 and HD 1000

Then you can read the reference pressure from your refer ence instrument (for example from the digital display of the

CPH 6200 hand-held pressure measuring instrument).

Since small amounts of air are always compressed in the system together with the medium, the test pressure that has been generated first drops off slightly. After this it must be readjusted.

A longer waiting time before stable operating conditions are reached should be expected at higher pressures than at lower pressures.

GB

4.1.2 Reducing the Pressure

Turning the spindle (2) counterclockwise reduces the test pressure

To make fine adjustments to the initial pressure setting, screw the fine adjustment valve (9) in or out.

Once the spindle (2) is in the extreme position on the front flange

(4) and the reference instrument and test specimen indicate

"Zero", the pressure measuring instruments can be disconnected.

Do not disconnect the reference instrument or test specimen until the pressure in the manual spindle pump has been completely released.

4.2 Handling the HD 1000

The maximum permissible pressure for the HD 1000 is 1000 bar. Higher pressures may damage the pump. The reference instrument, test specimen and any connecting tubes that are used must not be subjected to pressures above the maximum permissible level.

4.2.1 Increasing the Pressure

Turning the star handle (1) clockwise first moves the piston in the low-pressure cylinder (5a) in the direction of the rear flange

(6) (up to max. 250 bar).

WIKA Operating Instructions Test Pumps

7

GB

Test Pumps

8

At pressures greater than 250 bar, you should then remove the star handle (1) and connect it to the high-pressure spindle (3).

Then adjust the pressure in the high-pressure cylinder (5b) by turning the star handle clockwise until the required final pressure - which must not be greater than 1000 bar - has been reached.

To make fine adjustments to the initial pressure setting, screw the fine adjustment valve (9) in or out.

Then you can read the reference pressure from your reference instrument (for example from the digital display of the CPH 6200 hand-held pressure measuring instrument).

Since small amounts of air are always compressed in the system together with the medium, the test pressure that has been generated first drops off slightly. After this it must be readjusted.

A longer waiting time before stable operating conditions are reached should be expected at higher pressures than at lower pressures.

4.2.2 Reducing the Pressure

The pressure must always be reduced first in the high-pressure cylinder (5b). Turning the spindle (3) as far as it will go counterclockwise to the stop on the front flange will ensure that pressure has been released in the high-pressure range to the pressure level of the low-pressure range.

Then pressure can be released in the low-pressure cylinder (5a) from 250 bar to "Zero".

Once both spindles (2) and (3) are in the extreme position on the front flange and the reference instrument and test specimen indicate "Zero", the pressure measuring instruments can be disconnected.

Do not disconnect the reference instrument or test specimen until the pressure in the manual spindle pump has been completely released.

WIKA Operating Instructions Test Pumps

Test Pumps

HD 250 and HD 1000

4.3. Refilling the spindle pumps

Refilling must be performed as follows and the work must be performed in the order of the steps below.

GB

Open one of the test connections on the rear flange (6) of the pump (only when no pressure is present).

Turn the low-pressure spindle (2) clockwise until the pressure medium in the opened test connection becomes visible.

Then turn the low-pressure spindle (2) counterclockwise as far as it will go, watching the liquid level in the test connection as you do so. Enough liquid should always be added so that the level of liquid remains the same in the test connection. The pump must be filled slowly so that as little air as possible is drawn in.

Then use the same procedure to fill the high-pressure cylinder

(5b) by turning the high-pressure spindle (3) (for HD 1000 only).

As you do so, the low-pressure spindle (2) must remain screwed out as far as it will go.

After the filling process is completed, wait about two minutes. This will allow pockets of air in the filling medium to come together. All that is required to check whether the pump is ready for operation is a small clockwise turning motion for both spindles. The filling level in the test connection openings should be carefully observed.

If air bubbles escape, the filling process is not yet completed and should be repeated as described above.

Make certain the spindle pump is filled with the same filling medium as the one originally supplied with the pump.

The oil-design spindle pump is generally filled with hydraulic oil

ESSO J 13.

4.4. Handling the HD 250 / HD 1000 with Storage Container

When calibrating large pressure gauges (for example NS 160 or

NS 250) or if calibration processes are frequent, a storage container is a useful accessory. A storage container makes it possible to draw pressure medium into the pump without any problems. To fill the storage container, we recommend using the

ESSO J 13 hydraulic oil included with delivery in the 0.3 litre refilling container, since the spindle pumps are already filled with this medium in the oil design version.

Storage containers are available in two designs. One has a maximum permissible pressure of 1000 bar, the other only 400 bar. Pressures higher than the specified limits may damage the storage containers.

Mount storage container (A) on the rear flange with no pressure present, screw valve (B) out and open screw ring (C). Then fill the container (A) with hydraulic oil.

Mount the upstream filter (D) and shut-off valve (E) as well as the test specimen on the rear flange.

Open the shut-off valve (E) on the test specimen and close the valve (B) on the storage container (A).

If the required pressure has still not been reached, close the shut-off valve (E) on the test specimen.

Open the valve (B) on the storage container (A) and turn the pump spindle(s) counterclockwise with the star handle as far as it (they) will go.

Close valve (B) on the storage container (A).

Open the shut-off valve (E) on the test specimen.

Generate a pressure (no greater than the lowest maximum permissible of the parts in use). See sections 4.1 and 4.2.

Repeat the process described here until the required pressure is reached.

5. Maintenance Instructions

Because the test pumps work with practically no wear, no special maintenance is required. This does require, however, that a clean filling medium low in acid be used. You must also make certain that none of the pressure limits are exceeded while tests are being performed. To ensure that the seals and bearings of the test pump are not subjected to excessive stress, a continuous operating pressure of 250 bar should not be exceeded for pump HD 250.

Pump HD 1000 should not be operated above 250 bar in the lowpressure range and 1000 bar in the high-pressure range.

6. Cause of fault

If the pressure cannot be generated correctly or if the set pressure does not remain stable, this is likely to be caused by incorrectly positioned sealing gaskets or by using the wrong ones. Please also check whether any adapters used on the test connections have been tightened sufficiently.

Leaks in the connected peripheral measuring equipment can result in loss of medium for the test pumps. To ensure problemfree operation, the test pump must generally be refilled with the appropriate medium. A storage container is also available for use as an accessory.

If the pressure of 250 bar (low-pressure spindle) or 1000 bar

(high-pressure spindle) is not reached when the spindle is turned all the way clockwise to the stop, either there are too many air pockets in the system or the internal test pump volume is insufficient. To reach the full test pressures, in the first case the pump should be refilled with medium as described in

4.3 or, in the second case, a storage container should be used as described in 4.4.

By no means apply any force to the operating elements of the hand test pump.

1. Sicherheitshinweise

Anschlag drehen.

Ventil (B) am Vorratsbehälter (A) schließen.

Prüfpumpe an.
