Cameras
Never before has a single manufacturer offered
such a comprehensive range of CCTV cameras.
The Honeywell video range comprises the
E-series and the Systems series which, between
them, suit all possible application requirements.
Honeywell Video Systems E-series colour and monochrome cameras are ideally
suited for use in day to day surveillance applications. Designed for value,
the E-series range saves time and money with easy installation and reliable
performance. Their off-the-shelf feature set is developed for high picture quality
in standard applications and they require little to no adjustment once installed.
All cameras in the range support direct drive and auto iris lenses to ensure quality
video in fluctuating light conditions. Regardless of lens type, fitting the camera
is simple with a built in C/CS mounting ring and 4-pin auto-iris connector
as standard. The power connection is made with built in push terminals,
eliminating the need for a screwdriver and saving installation time.
The E-series cameras include an automatic electronic shutter for changes in light
level and an automatic backlight compensation option for viewing objects in the
foreground with bright light in the background.

All cameras in the range provide reliable video quality even in low light conditions,
making them the economical choice for most standard surveillance applications.
The Systems series range builds on this firm foundation but offers a market
leading feature set. Unshielded Twisted Pair or NVT™ compatibility appears
on most. Backlight compensation comes in 4 or 8 windows to maximise image
quality in adverse conditions along with gamma correction, peak white inversion
and sharpness adjustment. Discrete Cosine Transfer (DCT) enables efficient
image processing to reduce image data sizes in low light conditions optimising
the capability of associated digital storage devices. This gives more efficient use
of space on the digital recorder’s hard drive, allowing longer recording times.
Wide ranging power supplies make installation and product selection far simpler.

nowhere to hide
Criminals don’t like the light.
So when it’s your job to expose their dark deeds, you need
some really bright thinking on your side. Honeywell’s new Wide
Dynamic camera brings unsurpassed image integrity across
extreme contrast scenes, using Digital Pixel technology to make
every pixel think for itself, reacting to massive lux ranges using
the same principle as your own eye.
From lobbies, doorways and casino gaming rooms to rail platforms and warehouses…day or
night…there’s nowhere to hide from this remarkable camera.

HCCWD484X Wide Dynamic Camera
Designed for use in applications with
contrasting light conditions.
The HCCWD484X camera uses patented
Next Generation Image Capture Technology
that converts images from analogue to digital
format within each pixel, the instant the image is captured.
System camera
The HCCWD484X records each of the 388,800 pixels in optimum
exposure time, compared with CCD cameras that record all pixels in
a frame, with the same exposure time. As a result the HCCWD484X
gives high quality images with sharp definition and accurate colour,
regardless of lighting conditions such as shadow or glare.
The HCCWD484X includes an improved dynamic range of between
95dB and 120dB and higher frame rates (of between 50-60 frames
Surge Protector
per second) compared with conventional CCD cameras.
The camera also features a 1/3” Wide Dynamic Digital Imager,
14-bit digital processing, and a 0.4 lux at F1.2 for low light
conditions. The HCCWD484X camera has been designed to be
easily installed and offers five preset scenes; general, fluorescent,
indoor, outdoor or user defined – where the user can adjust the
dynamic range of the camera to optimize the image depending on
the light condition.

Compact in design the HD4VC4HRX is suitable for internal and external use in commercial or industrial
applications. Its solid die cast aluminium case can withstand heavy external impact.
The vandal resistant mini dome meets the need for a completely integrated, rugged and high-resolution
camera. It comes ready assembled for fast, easy installation
• The best video resolution available in this kind of product.
The 530 TVL, 1/3" CCD gives crisp, clear images
• A zoom range that is not available in other similar units.
The unit contains a 3.3mm to 12mm varifocal auto iris lens.
Most other products only give telephoto to 9mm. This means
that customers can place the HD4VC4HRX further away from
the object to be viewed and still achieve the field of view that
they require, or they can achieve a closer view, giving more
detail than before.
• Its IP66 rating means that it is suitable for use both internally
and externally
• The unit is very tough. It has been tested to withstand 80 joules
and exceeds the UL 2044, UL6500 impact testing.

Orbiter Platinum
– the next generation of dome technology
Orbiter Platinum, Gold, Lite and Insight Microspheres
All Orbiter Platinum, Gold, Lite and Insight Microspheres combine industry-leading
features with state-of-the-art design, making them the ideal choice for virtually all
CCTV applications. With its proven reputation for innovation, Honeywell Security
manufactures the leading-edge Microsphere range, embracing unique features,
functionality, practicality, quality, attractive design and intrinsic reliability. Not to
mention the quick and easy plug & play characteristics that have made Honeywell
Security the undisputed first choice for specifiers and engineers the world over.
Setting the standard
The Orbiter Platinum Microsphere is the benchmark fully functional
camera system and the leading price performer in the industry. The
Orbiter Lite and Insight Microspheres were developed in response to
customer demand for a leaner specification at the most competitive cost.
An extensive range of mounting options are available, for deployment in
external and internal locations.
For locations of a classical or heritage character, the “Regent” housing
option delivers all the benefits of the Orbiter Platinum or Gold system with
an outward appearance that is in keeping with any period architecture.
Alternatively, the Vandal Resistant Housing enables any Orbiter camera
to withstand a high level of violent attack without detriment
to its operation. A retrofit version, that can be fitted to any existing
8" Orbiter, including the “Regent” housing, is also available.
NVT™ is now built into Orbiter Microspheres as standard*, allowing the
video signal to be sent via CAT5 UTP cable. This represents even further
flexibility, both for the end user and installer, and can offer significant cost
savings over conventional video signalling methods.
Day/night changeover cameras
The Orbiter colour/mono Exview and colour/mono Wide Dynamic range
changeover cameras offer the best of both worlds – with significant
performance benefits over standard cameras. Full colour surveillance is
provided during the day down to 0.7 lux, with an automatic changeover
to mono at night when light levels are lower. The mono night time
operation is fully IR responsive. The Exview and Wide Dynamic range
technology delivers cleaner, crisper images in both colour and mono,
particularly where the viewing scene contains large differences in light
levels and contrast.
Privacy zones
The Orbiter range offers the most advanced, scaleable Privacy Zone
functionality available today. A preset view is used to define the area to
be blanked. This then scales to remain the same size on the view as the
operator pans past the blanked area or zooms in and out from it. Both
Platinum and Gold systems have 28 privacy zones, with the ability to
create complex shapes. Lite and Insight models have one privacy zone.
Sector identification (when used with MaxCom control equipment)
Both Orbiter Platinum and Gold models divide the full 360º pan
coverage into 16 sectors, each with identification text. Sector width
is programmable and each “ident” has 10 characters. This allows views
to be clearly labelled so the operator knows exactly what the
Microsphere is targeting.
Fast zoom lens with intelligent control
The Orbiter range features three optical zoom options. Lite and Insight
models are available as colour only with an 18x zoom and 16x zoom
respectively.
www.honeywell.com/security/uk
18
The Gold range also has an 18x
zoom lens (4.1 to 73.8mm) colour
and colour/mono option, whilst the
Platinum provides 27x zoom lens
(3.25 to 88mm). The Larger 88mm
zoom focal length on the 27x zoom
enables an operator to read a car
number plate successfully at greater
distances – and that’s just the optical
zoom. Once the lens is fully zoomed
*except where stated
in, the Microsphere briefly pauses before entering a digital zoom mode,
adding a further 10x magnification. Intelligent zoom control software
reduces the pan and tilt speed of the Microspheres as the lens is zoomed
in, enabling very fine control when tracking events at a distance.
High-speed precision control and 360º continuous rotation
All Microspheres have high-speed precision control, with electronic
braking. High quality motors with precision gearing enable pan speeds
of 400º/second between presets, decreasing to 0.1º/second for fine
control when fully zoomed in. Slip rings allow for a full 360º continuous
rotation. This ensures that, during tracking or surveying, the panning
system does not hit the traditional “end stop”. The Microspheres also
offer a rapid 180º flip control feature for monitoring any object or person
that passes below.
“In-Coax” and “Twisted Pair” Telemetry control
It is no longer necessary to specify “In-Coax” or “Twisted Pair”
telemetry. All Orbiter Microspheres can be controlled by either telemetry
in the same unit. This makes ordering simple and reduces your stock.
Integrated NVT™ connections present even more installation flexibility
and possibilities.
Preset positions, alarm control and tours
The Orbiter Platinum and Gold Microspheres have 128 presets and four
tours (each with 128 presets per tour). The Lite has 64 presets with two
tours and Insight has eight presets with one tour. Presets are easily set
up and recalled by the operator from a keyboard controller or
automatically triggered on alarm activation.
Mimic tours
Four “Mimic” tours are available on the Orbiter Platinum and Gold
Microspheres and one tour is provided on the Lite. Here the
Microsphere can be switched to “Learn” mode where a sequence
of pan, tilt, zoom, focus and preset positions can be “memorised”
for up to three minutes duration.
Plug & play simplicity
Fast and simple installation is key to all Honeywell Security products.
That’s why the Microsphere range offers “plug-and-play” simplicity
– fitting like a light bulb to its mount. All Microspheres are pre-built with
the exception of the “Top Cover” and “Acrylic” which are quickly and
easily fitted on-site. The Orbiter Gold and Lite automatically selects
“Twisted Pair” or “In-Coax” telemetry, according to what is connected.
The result? Fast, simple and easy installation, allowing you to do more
jobs in the same amount of time.
Built-in telemetry receiver and full opto-isolation
Advanced telemetry control electronics feature gain and lift, meaning
that cable runs of more than 500m are possible with RG59 grade coax.
The isolated power supply reduces the possibility of earth loops and full
opto-isolation built in for the RS485 data communications, ensures
trouble free operation. This focus on design detail at board level gives
trouble free installation and operation during the Microsphere’s life.
Video and telemetry transmission
The Honeywell Security Microsphere range uses industry standard
methods for video transmission and RS485 data driven telemetry
control. This ensures compatibility with most CCTV transmission
methods and systems.
Third party control protocol
All Orbiters, except Insight, support Pelco P, Pelco D, Vicon, Molynx
and Ernitek protocols, in addition to native VCL and Ultrak/Diamond.

HJZTPX Controller
Joystick telemetry controller
The HJZTPX represents the latest advancement of telemetry control, designed to give security
professionals control of Honeywell HD6 and Orbiter domes, HRHD series Digital Video Recorders and
Honeywell multiplexers.
With total system flexibility, the HJZTPX facilitates control of up to 128 dome cameras and 32 DVRs or
multiplexers from a single controller—intelligently selecting the correct multiplexer or DVR when a
camera number is entered. The system’s flexibility is further enhanced with the option of slaving up to
three additional keyboards, allowing control from four separate locations.
Control of domes, DVRs and multiplexers is achieved through an intuitive menu system, displayed on the
controller’s LCD screen. With an intelligently conceived, backlit keypad, using the HJZTPX controller is an
intuitive task, even when accessing higher end dome functions such as Presets, Tours and Privacy
Zones. Switching between standard cameras functions such as full pan, tilt and zoom control, to DVR
recording, review or programming, is easily achieved with a minimum number of keystrokes.
Installation could not be simpler; connections to the controller are made using standard RJ type
connectors and cables to connect the HJZTPX to CCTV peripherals are all included with the product.
Operators using the controller for the first time will benefit with shorter learning times, a simplistic user
interface and an appreciation for the level of control and flexibility offered by the HJZTPX.

DIGITAL VIDEO RECORDER AND TRANSMISSION UNIT WITH PEOPLE COUNTER
Centralise the security, the monitoring and
the management of your business in a
single system with HVS-PeCo
transmission
HVS-PeCo is A UNIT TO VIEW AND TO
COUNT. It collects the information obtained from
your CCTV system to provide you, at any
moment and at any place, with live or recorded
images. Thanks to its intelligent sensors it also
analyses the images acquired to provide you
with flow data with no need to install special
cameras or physical barriers.
HVS-PeCo units
transmit, record and
play recorded video
simultaneously without
interference.

Monitoring and operation control
With HVS-PeCo you will be able to ”virtually“
visit your installations whenever and wherever.
You will know how many people have come
into your premises, the peak hours of the day,
when to adjust your staff according to the
people flow… You will know more about your
business and you will be able to make
decisions to increase your profitability.
A HVS-PeCo unit is able to obtain data from
the people flow in your business with more
than 90% accuracy on daily average.
Both images and counting data use the same
system. As a digital video unit, the HVS-PeCo
transmits live or recorded video via TCP/IP to
several users simultaneously, without stopping
recording. The recording can be configured for
schedule (time-lapse), event or motion
detection and set with independent recording
rates for each camera. As a people counter,
the HVS-PeCo generates count data,
recognising directional and simultaneous
people, movement, displaying data by
graphical means.
With HVS-PeCo you
will be able to see
what is happening in
any of your installations
independently of the
time and distance.
You will be able to
oversee your business,
interact with the
security devices (alarm
panels, detectors,
etc.), receive alarms,
record and process
events and export
images to documents
or incident reports.
HVS-PeCo web based software
remote
transmission
Since it is based on WEB technology and works
via TCP/IP (LAN or ADSL) the access to the
images and/or data can be remotely and safely
made via any PC with Microsoft Internet
Explorer. Security is maintained through its
access level password-protected system.51

System architecture
VideoBloX features an open and completely expandable architecture. This means that the smallest system
of 16x8 can grow to a system capacity of 16368x2048 by the addition of chassis and video I/O cards.
The system architecture is high density, with most I/O cards only 1/2U in height. This allows very large
systems to be built in relatively small enclosures; for example a 12U chassis can support a matrix system
of 288x64 or 336x32.
The VideoBloX system is designed to make expansion as easy as possible with minimal configuration,
and this simple approach to set-up and operation is used throughout the product range.
All elements of the VideoBloX system are hot swappable, allowing
system upgrades and maintenance to be performed without system
downtime. For installation and maintenance convenience all cards are
removable via the front of the chassis.
All VideoBloX video and audio I/O cards are position independent,
which means that a card can reside in any position within a chassis.
The VideoBloX system backplanes support input and output to the
cards with no electronic components present. Once installed these
backplanes need no further attention as there are no components
to fail. This allows completed systems to be left ‘in situ’ with no need
to ever visit the rear of the equipment rack other than for rewiring or
the addition of wiring.

System communications
System communications are achieved via RS422. The RS422
network provides reliable communications over dual pair shielded
twisted pair cable (such as Belden spec 9842) for up to 1.2
kilometres before a repeater is required. An IIC is used for local shorthaul communications, typically alarm I/O, within the control room.
RS232 serial ports are provided for system configuration and also
system control.
Multiple protocol support
The VideoBloX system affords the possibility of running ‘third party’
protocols along with the native VideoBloX protocol. Most leading
manufacturers’ protocols are supported and the interfacing is
achieved via ‘Protocol Interface Translators’ or PITs.
ASCII protocols may also be loaded into the system CPU and
assigned to one or more PITs to provide ‘gateways’ to non
VideoBloX equipment.
Multiple protocol support is seamless and completely transparent
as far as the operation of the system is concerned.
Audio
Another strength of the VideoBloX system is the integration of
audio switching. The VideoBloX audio components use balanced
audio transmission to ensure that audio quality is optimised.
Balanced signalling also allows long cable runs with minimal losses
and minimal risk of interference. To ensure that the maximum audio
quality is attained, adjustment is provided for gain on all audio
channels allowing levels across all inputs to be matched.
For maximum noise rejection adjustment of common mode
rejection is possible on all inputs. A number of advanced audio
features are provided, including phantom powering, 20dB pad,
high pass filter and low pass filter.
Alarm inputs and outputs
Alarm inputs and relay outputs can be connected directly to the
VideoBloX CPU module via IIC or may be sited remotely and
interfaced to the CPU via the RS422 network. Using the remote
alarm option can present significant cost savings where multiple
cables would otherwise have to be run back to the control room.
VideoBloX CPU units are provided with a 32 input/4 output local
alarm interface. Further alarm I/O may be added locally via IIC
or remotely via RS422.
VideoBloX Lite CPU combos are provided with an 8 input/2 output
local alarm interface, further alarms may be added locally via IIC only.
System chassis
VideoBloX system chassis are supplied in 2, 4, 8 and 12U sizes,
and are designed to be installed into a standard 19" rack type
enclosure. The 2U chassis requires an external low voltage power
supply of 12-18VAC or 12-25VDC. All other chassis have an
integrated mains powered PSU, and can also accept a secondary
low voltage supply of the same specification as the 2U chassis.
Fan cooling is used in all chassis.
To calculate the number of standard 1/2 U modules that a chassis
can accommodate, simply multiply the size of the chassis by 2 and
take away 1.For example an 8U chassis: 8x2 =16, take away 1 = 15;
so an 8U chassis can accommodate 15 standard 1/2 U modules.
CPU modules
CPU modules provide the “brain” of the system and also support
all primary communications, I/O and operation of the entire system.
The vast majority of the system configuration is held within the CPU
and is battery backed-up.
Configuration of the system is performed via a PC application,
which connects directly to the CPU via a dedicated RS232 port.
Video input modules
Video input modules support 16 camera inputs. The number of
monitor outputs that the system will support defines the type of
video input cards that will be required. The part codes for video
cards specify the number of monitor outputs at the end of the part
code. For example, HVB16M32 is a 16 video input, 32 monitor
output card.
Video input cards feature front panel adjustable video gain to allow
matching of signals to compensate for varying lengths of cable
runs. Video termination for each input may be selected on or off via
miniature switches mounted on the PCB.
Standard video input cards are non-looping. If looping inputs are
required, optional looping backplanes may be fitted to the chassis.
Looping backplanes halve the density of a VideoBloX chassis, as
they represent 1U per 16 video inputs rather than the standard 1/2U.
www.honeywell.com/security/uk
40
Monitor output modules
Monitor output modules are available with titling. In order to attain
the required number of monitor outputs, multiples of cards are used.
For instance, if 40 titled monitor outputs were required, 3 x
HVB16TO would be needed.
Honeywell Product Listings
System control keyboards
VideoBloX system control keyboards are compatible with all
VideoBloX equipment, connected via the RS422 network.
Keyboards provide a physical interface to the VideoBloX system
and are powerful devices in their own right with a high degree
of flexibility. The overall functionality, down to the individual key
press, is defined during the system set up. Complex operator
and keyboard privileges are possible. Keyboards may be assigned
functionality regardless of the operator who is logged on, or
conversely operator privileges may be accessed and loaded
from the CPU, according to which operator has logged onto
the keyboard.
Accessory keyboard
A 16 key accessory keyboard is available to provide programmable
auxiliary functions, typically for releasing electronic door locks
or switching lighting via relay output modules. The keyboard
is supplied in a rectangular stainless steel box, which is designed
for console mounting. The keycaps are removable to allow easy
customisation.
Control software GUI
The VideoBloX Graphical User Interface (GUI) allows a single PC
to connect directly to the VideoBloX system CPU via RS232
and supports the same level of functionality as a control keyboard.
The GUI supports site maps and ‘drag and drop’ type functions
for camera and monitor selection.
Alarm input modules
VideoBloX alarm expansion modules are equipped with 16 potential
free inputs that can be configured as normally open or normally
closed. LED indicators are provided on each input channel to give
a visual indication of the input status. Alarm expansion modules
communicate via IIC and can be connected directly to the system
CPU or, via a PIT, to the RS422 network. All modules are provided
with looping IIC ports to allow multiple units to be interconnected
locally.
Audio input modules
Audio input modules support 16 balanced audio inputs. The
number of audio outputs that the system will support defines the
type of audio input cards that will be required. The part codes for
audio cards specify the number of audio outputs at the end of the
part code, for instance HVB16AM64 is a 16 audio input, 64 audio
output card.
Audio output modules
In order to attain the required number of audio outputs, multiples
of cards are employed. For instance, if 32 audio outputs were
required, 2 x HVB16AO would be needed. The audio output
level can be adjusted to match the input level of the
receiving equipment.
RS422 distribution
VideoBloX CPU modules support either one or two master
RS422 communication ports (1 on the CPU combo and 2 on the
standard CPU).
switchers
& matrices
When multiple GUIs are required a CCTV server version of the
GUI must be installed onto a PC with a free RS232 port to provide
primary communications to the VideoBloX CPU. All other client
GUIs then use the CCTV server as the access interface to the
VideoBloX CPU via any TCP/IP network.
Chassis Interlink Modules
Chassis interlink modules can be used for two purposes. One is
to allow the backplanes of multiple chassis to be interconnected,
allowing a system of up to 16368 x 64. Interlinks can be applied
to systems where up to 64 monitor outputs are required and the
backplane buses are transferred “down” all chassis. Interlink
modules can also be applied to “cross-linking” where the number
of monitors required is more than 64, and all video inputs have
to be available for all monitor outputs. The choice of module type
depends on their intended use and the number of video signals
that have to be cross-linked.
In most applications keyboards, PITs and other peripherals will be
connected to the RS422 network. RS422 distribution devices are
provided to allow distribution of the RS422 network to suit the
installation. There are two basic types of unit, firstly the 422
combo, which provides 4 “Master” communications ports 4 more
RS422 ports. A 16 channel fault tolerant version is also available.
This unit also features visual diagnostics on each channel.
All RS422 distribution devices can be used with VideoBloX
protocol, or any other protocols that may be generated by a PIT.
RS485 driven devices are also supported via RS422 distribution by
using the Tx[+] and Tx[-] pair of the RS422 connections.
Alarm output modules
VideoBloX alarm output modules are equipped with 16 open drain
FET outputs. The outputs are capable of switching loads of up
to 8 amps at up to 50VDC.
LED indicators are provided on each channel to give visual
indication of the output status. Alarm outputs are activated via
sequences which may be triggered by alarm inputs, control
keyboards, GUIs etc.

PIT (Protocol Interface Translator)
PITs are used to translate the native VideoBloX network protocol
into “third party” non-VideoBloX protocols. This allows the
VideoBloX system to seamlessly integrate with a large number
of domes, telemetry receivers, DVRs and remote set up cameras.
The “slave” side of the PIT always connects to the VideoBloX
RS422 networks; the “master” side of the PIT generates the
selected third party protocol. A number of devices are supported
natively in the PIT firmware. Non supported devices are added
periodically, based on customer requests or programmed into the
CPU and sent to one or more PIT’s which act as “gateways” to the
third party devices.
PITs are available with the master side as RS422, RS485, RS232
and opto isolated RS232. PITs can operate on a “one to one” basis
where the connected device is non-addressable, or in “broadcast”,
when addressable devices are being interfaced.
Specifying VideoBloX systems
One of the most important aspects of specifying a VideoBloX system is gaining a thorough understanding
of what is required of the system today and also what expansion path may exist; this will allow the initial
system to provide an easy and cost effective upgrade path.
There are a few simple guidelines to ensure that the core of the VideoBloX system is correctly specified:
MANDATORY ITEMS
Chassis
If the system will fit into a single chassis ensure that there is “overhead”
in the chassis capacity to allow for extra video/audio I/O
Keyboard
CPU
A single CPU is required on all systems
Video input modules
Specific to the required number of monitor outputs
Monitor output modules
Looping backplanes
Required only for looping video inputs. Increases each 16 video input unit to IU
Keyboards/GUIs
Exact type depends on application
RS422 distribution
The correct number of RS422 channels can only be estimated if the wiring method and layout
of the system is known. As a guideline, allow 1 x RS422 channel per device. Usually also
required for distribution of 3rd party protocols to RS422/RS485 driven devices
OPTIONAL AND APPLICATION SPECIFIC ITEMS
PITs
Always needed if domes of any type are part of the system. Usually needed to interface to any
non-VideoBloX device. The exact make and model of the device must be known. Check with
Honeywell sales for specific device support
PIT
VDAs
Usually required where more than 2 pieces of equipment need to be fed with the same video signal
Alarm input expansion
If sited away from the chassis a PIT will be required to interface alarms onto the RS422 network
Alarm output expansion
If sited away from the chassis a PIT will be required to interface alarms onto the RS422 network
Interlinks in/out
If more than 1 chassis is required to support the system
Audio input modules
Specific to the required number of matrix switchable audio outputs
Audio output modules

FUSION STREAMER
The Fusion Streamer offers the latest in IP video recording.
The Fusion Streamer allows the Fusion DVR platform to leverage IP video recording and seamlessly extend the analogue
infrastructure into the IP video world. The technology that accompanies the unit allows for leverage with existing
analogue hardware while enjoying the flexibility that an IP video platform can provide.
Fail safe local recording to onboard compact flash and out of the box Fusion DVR integration makes this a truly attractive
solution for security integrators of all levels.
The Fusion Streamer bridges the gap between cumbersome analogue and expensive, high end IP video solutions.
It is a robust MPEG-4, four channel, video streamer. Can convert up to four analogue channels into MPEG-4
IP video streams.
Ideal compact size and design making it ideal for installations in existing rack mount space.

Benefits of using Digital Video Recorders
•
•
•
•
•
Only record the images you need – avoid recording hours of useless footage
Find recorded images quickly and easily
Allow each camera input to become its own recording solution
Record images prior to the event trigger
Ensure the highest quality video images are recorded digitally
Most DVRs have selectable image per second recording rates for
each individual camera (camera 1 may only need to record at 1 image
per second whilst camera 2 may need to record at real-time (i.e. 25
images per second). Scheduled recording can be set up to record
some or all cameras at a specific recording rate throughout the
working day e.g. 8am to 6pm and can be set to only record on
certain cameras; while during non-working hours e.g. 6pm to 8am, all
are recording.
Event driven CCTV
Event detection provides the ability to link alarm generated events
with video images thus improving the efficiency of a CCTV system.
Without event detection, CCTV systems can waste recording time
and space by recording from cameras where nothing of interest is
taking place. Digital recording systems are ideally suited to alarm or
event based recording.
Typical methods of creating events are:
1) Alarm devices installed with the cameras, such as intruder
systems, PIRs, door contacts and beams.
2) Motion Detection can be used to trigger event recording
on each camera. It detects changes in the video images
and provides event alarms. This is particularly useful where large
areas require coverage with a high degree of integrity.
The benefits of using event driven systems are many:
1) More information can be recorded from cameras when events
are taking place.
2) Systems can be purely event driven and only record when events
are taking place. In many cases this can also include an amount
of pre-alarm footage so that the video images leading up to the
event may also be reviewed.
3) Record rates and methods can be varied depending on whether
events are taking place. Slow time lapse recording can be
maintained on more alarmed cameras while faster rates can be set
on alarmed cameras.
4) Video information can be located by searches based on time,
date, camera and event type. Using a combination of Schedule
recording and event driven recording, any camera connected
to the DVR can be configured to record at different recording
rates at different times of the day and be triggered by different
event alarms. If any recording is triggered by an event alarm,
this will allow an operator to see the event in the event alarm log
and instantly playback the video clip associated with that event alarm.
Network Video
A TCP/IP Ethernet transmission option is available on most
transmission products and digital video recorders. When installing
systems in this environment it is important that the system is pre
planned with the network administrator. The transmission equipment will
need an IP address, subnet mask and gateway address. You will also
need to know how much network bandwidth is allowed for the video
transmission system. In many companies the network is a vital part
of the communication system and it is crucial that the video
transmission integrates into the network with no disruption to
company activities.
Archiving
Different CCTV applications will require different levels of storage,
depending on how the system is operated. The type and amount of
archive storage required
depends on how much data
will be generated by the
recorder and directly relates
to how the system is
programmed and used. Small
www.honeywell.com/security/uk
clips of video may be
archived to USB memory
devices, Zip drives, CDs
and DVDs.

Data Storage
When dealing with digital systems it is important to know how long
the storage will last before filling the hard disk and when the stored
information will be overwritten.
There are a number of key points that define how long storage
will last:
• the capacity of the hard disk drives (storage media)
• the recorded image file size. In many cases this is configurable,
(the image sizes are stated within the manufacturer’s literature)
• the record rate, or the recorded images per second per camera
• how many hours per day each camera is recording for
Example:
A 16 channel DVR records high resolution images with an image file
size of 8KB (kilobytes). The record rate has been set to 2.5 images
per second per camera and records for 24 hours a day. How long will
the 320 Gigabyte hard disk last before overwriting?
Firstly the hard disk drive:
1) To convert the 320 gigabytes into kilobytes. Converting to
megabytes and then kilobytes does this:
320 Gbytes x 1024 = 327,680 Mbytes
327,680 Mbytes x 1024 = 335,544,320 Kbytes
2) Dividing the Kbyte capacity of the disk by the image file size tells
us how many images can be recorded.
335,544,320 Kbytes / 8 = 41,943,040 images can be recorded.
3) The total record rate is 2.5 images per second per camera,
so 2.5 images x 16 camera = total of 40 images per second.
So 41,942,040 images divided by 40 images per second will
take 1,048,551 seconds to fill the disk
This figure in seconds is then divided by 60 to convert to minutes,
1,048,551 seconds / 60 = 17,476.85 minutes.
The figure in minutes is then divided by 60 to give a value in hours
17476 minutes / 60 = 291.26 hours.
The figure in hours can then be converted into days by dividing
by 24, 291 hours / 24 = 12.14 days.
For a CD-RW drive: (for just one camera)
1) Assuming that single sided 750 Mbyte CDs are used.
Convert the 750MByte into Kilobytes:
750 x 1024 = 768000 Kilobytes
2) Dividing the Kbyte capacity of the CD by the image size tells us
how many images can be recorded.
768000 Kbytes / 8Kbytes = 96000 images can be recorded.
3) The total record rate is 2.5 images per second, so 96000 images
divided by 2.5 images per second will take 38400 seconds to fill
the disk. Divide 38400 seconds by 60 for the figure in minutes
= 640 minutes. Divide 640 minutes by 60 for the figure in hours
= 10.66 hours.
For the DVD drive: (for just one camera)
1) Assuming that single sided 4.7 Gbyte DVDs are used.
Convert the 4.7 Gigabytes into Kilobytes:
4.7GBytes x 1024 = 4812 Megabytes
4812MBytes x 1024 = 4928307 Kilobytes
2) Dividing the KByte capacity of the DVD by the image size tells us
how many images can be recorded.
4928307KBytes / 8KBytes = 616038 images can be recorded.
3) The record rate is 2.5 images per second, so 616038 images
divided by 2.5 images per second will take 246,415.20 seconds
to fill the disk.
Divide 246,415.20 seconds by
60 for the figure in minutes
= 4,106.92 minutes.
Divide 4,106.92 minutes by 60
for the figure in hours = 68.44
hours. Divide 68.44 hours by
24 for the figure in days
= 2.85 day.

Twisted Pair
In today’s world of increasingly complex security
surveillance systems, CCTV installers need to
consider all the available options.
Ever since the introduction of CCTV cameras for security surveillance
applications, coaxial cable has been the first choice media used for the
transmitting of video. Honeywell advocates the use of unshielded twisted pair
cable as an alternative to coaxial cable because it is:

team providing up to date training courses, designed
to give customers the best support to meet a wide
range of comprehensive needs.
The Training Manager comes from a
long standing career in training within
the Royal Navy. He specialises in
Training Design. In recent years he has
managed the RN Police and Security
Training School and been responsible for
Management and Equal Opportunities
training. His theme for training falls from
the ancient Chinese way of teaching;
“I hear and I forget
I see and I remember
I do and I understand”
With this in mind, our training is now
very much centred on the more
practical approach, we tell you, we
show you – now you do it!
The Product Trainer has already carved
a name for himself delivering training
for the whole product range.`A natural
instructor, he started in the repairs
section at Honeywell Video Systems
and has already proved to be`a valued
asset whilst delivering training for
Installers. He is"easily able to diversify
when required and satisfy the more
technical issues that arise"within the
training sessions.
The company provides a refreshing
learning environment, a place to learn
and an opportunity to get hands-on
with all of the new products. We hope
to allow customers to see the whole
range of products using every possible
scenario, we already have the
technology – we want you to experience
the capability of what we have to offer,
rather than reading about it.
However experienced you think you
and your staff are, you could be leaving
yourself legally vulnerable if installations
are carried out incorrectly.
You may be missing out on business
because a growing number of
customers see qualifications as
essential to a contract.
We have been tracking calls received
by our help-lines from customers and
feeding these into training needs. Do
you really know how much of your time
and money is wasted by your staff
calling us, when most of the issues are
included on our courses? Our average
received call time is about 20 minutes.

Glossary of Terms
CCTV Glossary of Terms
AC - Alternating current
A/D converter
Analogue to Digital converter. An
electronic device or circuit which
converts analogue electrical signals into
digital (binary) values.
Activity detection
Commonly used in video multiplexers as
a means of improving recording
efficiency. Cameras that have changes in
programmed scene areas are recorded
more frequently than cameras with no
scene changes. Not to be confused with
VMD (video motion detection).
Address
Addressing provides a means of
identifying individual items that are
located on a network. In the Honeywell
environment each Microsphere is given
an address,
the network is the RS 485 twisted pair
cabling.
AGC
Automatic Gain Control. A circuit that
provides a method of keeping a signal at
a constant level. Cameras use AGC to
keep the video signal level high under
low light conditions
ALC
Automatic Level Control. This is found
on auto iris lenses and is a means of
‘fine tuning’ the sensitivity of the lens.
If set to ‘peak’, bright areas can show
more detail and if set to ‘average’ dark
areas will show more detail. The default
setting is halfway on most lenses and
will suit
the majority of installations.
Ambient light level
The measurement of light intensity on a
scene under a specified set of
conditions, usually measured in LUX.
Angle of view
The maximum width of view available
from a CCD imager, regardless of the
lens fitted. The bigger the CCD imager
format, the wider the angle of view.
Aperture
A means of adjusting the amount of light
passing through a lens. In the CCTV
environment the lens iris is the aperture
control method.
Archive
This is the long term removable storage
of information, usually associated with
digital recorders. They often take the
form of removable disks, tape, CD, DVD
etc.
Aspherical lens
A lens that uses non spherical optics to
reduce the effects of geometrical
distortion. The effects of geometrical
distortion increase as the lens angle
becomes wider.
Aspherical lenses are a good choice
where a wide field of view is required.
Auto iris
A facility built into lenses to control the
amount of light allowed through the lens.
The auto iris compensates for differing
light levels, allowing the camera picture
to be consistent under varying light
conditions.
Auto white balance
This is a facility provided on most colour
cameras to adjust white levels relative to
other colours.
Back focus
The position of the imaging device in
relation to the focal point of the lens, it is
sometimes referred to as ‘rack focus’.
When setting up a zoom lens the back
focus must be set to allow correct
tracking of focus throughout the zoom
range.
Balanced signalling
A means of transmitting signals using
two wires, also often referred to as
differential transmission. It provides very
high noise immunity because only the
difference between the two signals is
seen as valid information.
In the CCTV environment RS485 and
RS422 are examples of balanced
signals.
Bandwidth
The frequency response capability of a
device or communications medium. The
greater the bandwidth, the larger the
capacity of the system i.e. the more
information carrying ability the CCTV or
network system has.
Baud rate
Defines the speed of data transmission
of a device in terms of bits per second,
where ‘bit’ can be defined
as a piece of binary information or
‘binary digit’.
Binary
This is the base two numbering system.
A binary number can only be one of two
values, 0 or 1. These individual values or
‘bits’ are lumped together into strings of
data (see byte), Computers operate
exclusively in Binary.
Blooming
An effect seen when the iris of a lens is
set incorrectly and allows too much light
through to the CCD imager. Bright areas
of the scene lose definition and begin to
merge with the surroundings.
BLC
Back light compensation. A feature found
on some cameras that allows it to deal
with different lighting levels in the scene
of view, such as looking from a dark
room into a doorway. BLC enables detail
to be seen in otherwise dark or
shadowed areas where silhouetting
would otherwise occur.
BNC (Bayonet Neill Concelman)
Invented by and named after Amphenol
Engineer Carl Concelman and Bell Labs
Engineer Paul Neill and was developed in
the late 1940s.
Used for terminating coaxial cables, the
main connector in the CCTV industry.
Byte
8 bits of data information. Also referred
to as an octet. Generally a data byte
represents a single character.
Cameo
This is 1/16th of the total area of a full
screen or a single area of a 16 way
screen generated by a video multiplexer.
CCD
Charge coupled device. The solid state
device that most CCTV cameras use to
gather images. Often referred to as an
imager.
CCIR

cameras where the distance between the
lens flange and CCD is 12.5mm.
CS mount adaptor
A 5mm deep spacer ring that allows a C
mount lens
to be installed on a CS mount camera.
Co axial cable
A dual conductor cable where the outer
conductor (screen / ground), is wound
concentrically around an insulator which
houses the central conductor. In the
CCTV environment co axial cable is used
to transmit video signals.
Codec
Coder/decoder. Is an electronic device
which compresses and decompresses
digital signals (Binary). Codecs usually
perform A to D or D to A conversion.
training
Artefacts
The unwanted additions that are
sometimes seen in compressed digital
images. They are a side affect of the
compression process and tend to
become more prevalent as greater
degrees of compression are applied.
59
Glossary of Terms
Composite video
A complete video signal, in which the
Luminance (brightness) and
Chrominance (colour) information is
combined using one of the international
coding standards NTSC, PAL etc.
Conditional refresh
A technique used by some digital video
transmission products. Only the parts of
the picture that change are updated.
Occasional complete images are
transmitted according to the rules of the
standard or when changes
in the scene are too great for the
conditional technique to manage. MPEG
and H261 are typical conditional refresh
coding standards.
Duplex
In electronic terms this means the ability
to simultaneously send and receive
signals. In CCTV, this term is associated
with video multiplexers that have 2 frame
stores. A duplex multiplexer can display
multiple live images whilst recording all
cameras to tape. It can also
simultaneously play and record if 2 VCRs
are used.
Crosstalk
Undesirable interaction between signals.
Typically seen
as interference on screen, which takes
the form of noise, patterning or a whole
host of other effects.
DVD
Digital versatile disk, very similar to a CD
in appearance but with a larger storage
capacity. Used as removable archive
media in some DVRs. Available in both
single and double sided media.
DAT
Digital audio tape. Often wrongly referred
to as an archive media for digital
recorders. DAT is in fact a bespoke
format designed for the audio
environment, and is not suitable for
CCTV data storage.
Dwell
The time period in which a switcher will
remain on one camera input before
switching to the next in the sequence. It
can also refer to the time spent by a
device at a preset position when in tour
mode.
Data compression
A series of techniques that are designed
to reduce the size of data in order to
save space or transmission time.
Distribution amplifier
A device designed to feed a single video
or audio signal to several pieces of
equipment. It can reduce the possibility
of losses and crosstalk when looping a
signal through multiple pieces of
equipment.
DCT
Discreet cosine transfer. This limits the
AGC range in an image allowing
increased compensation on a digital
recording.
DDS
Digital data storage. Suitable as a long
term archive method for compatible
digital recorders. Available in
a number of formats and capacities from
DDS 2
(4Gb per tape) through DDS3 (12Gb per
tape) to DDS 4 (20Gb per tape).
Digital zoom
A facility provided on some video
multiplexers and CCTV cameras, which
allows the image to be ‘zoomed into’,
the higher the zoom ratio the more
‘blocky’ the image
can become.
Dropout
A temporary reduction or loss of a signal.
DSP
Digital signal processing. A system
supported by some CCTV cameras,
which allows intelligent manipulation
of the video signal in the camera for
features such as backlight
compensation.
60
DTMF
Dual tone multi frequency. Used as an
analogue dialling method by telephones
and modems. In telephones this is also
referred to as ‘touch tone dialling’ and is
also used as a telemetry signalling
method by some CCTV manufacturers.
EI
Electronic iris. This is a system within
some CCTV cameras where an
electronic shutter is built into the
camera. It allows a normal fixed iris lens
to be fitted in a wider range of
applications. It should not be assumed
that EI would negate the need for an
auto-iris lens.
EIA
Electronic Industry Association. The USA
television standard. Also known as NTSC
(525 lines to a single frame of a video).
Ethernet
Ethernet is the most widely utilised
network technology. Specified in a
standard, IEE 802.3, Ethernet was
originally developed by Xerox and then
developed further by Xerox, DEC, and
Intel. It is now a popular means of
distributing data and/or video.
Exwave / Exview
Are terms relating to an enhanced CCD
imager that features improved light
gathering techniques which give
improved low light sensitivity, particularly
near the IR end of the spectrum.
Fibre optics
Transmission of signals via fibre optic
cable. Signals via the fibre optic cable
are transmitted as light. Specialised
interfaces are used at each end of the
fibre optic cable
to convert the video and telemetry data
signals. Fibre interfaces are available in
two types, single mode that allows one
signal type down one fibre cable and
multi mode that allows two or more
signals via a single fibre cable.
Field
A field is one half of a complete TV
picture and can comprise of all odd lines
or all even lines.
Flow control
This is a means of controlling the flow of
data via hardware and / or software on
asynchronous communications links,
including networks.
Focal length
This is the distance from the centre of
the lens to a point at which images come
into focus. The CCD imager is usually set
at this point to ensure image clarity This
value is what denotes the angle of view
and size of the target image.
Frame
A complete TV picture comprising of two
fields, one odd and one even.
Frame integration
A technique used by some CCTV
cameras which allows for extreme low
light sensitivity. Exposure times are
increased as light levels drop, allowing
good images when most conventional
cameras can no longer give a picture.
It has the side effect of reducing video
updates (video appears delayed on
screen), reducing as levels of integration
get higher.
Frame store
Is digital memory capable of containing a
frame of video
in digital format.
F-stop
In photography, this is a term used to
indicate the speed of a lens in terms of
exposure. It directly relates to the iris
setting of the lens and thus the amount
of light allowed through. The smaller the
f-stop setting, the more light is allowed
through.
Full frame refresh
A technique used by some video
transmission systems where a full picture
is transmitted each refresh/update,
regardless of the amount of scene
changes. JPEG is a full frame capture
standard.
Glossary of Terms

earth points on a system cause currents
to flow via the screening on the cable.
Causes picture disturbance, normally in
the form
of black bars across the picture.
H.261
Coding standard used for conditional
refresh capture and transmission of
digital video images. Represents the
video part of the H.323 specification for
videoconferencing protocols.
Half duplex
This refers to communications links that
are capable of running in either transmit
or receive mode, but not both modes
concurrently. To achieve half-duplex
operation the mode of the
communications link is effectively ‘turned
round’ between transmit and receive
modes when necessary.

‘home return’ point. Usually related to a
timer based on keyboard activity, when
the timer expires the camera will be
driven to the home preset position.
IDE
Integrated drive electronics. Common

is available at all times and does not
require any call set up procedures. These
lines are generally used as a permanent
data trunk connection. Most commonly
found as a permanently connected
means of delivering remote digital video.
Looping

between the top of sync level and the
bottom of black level.
Pinhole lens
A lens that features a very small opening
ideally suited to covert applications
where the camera can be concealed.
Pixel
Term used for a single picture element. A
monitor or TV has a display that
comprises of millions of pixels; each
pixel is illuminated with varying intensity
to create the picture display.
PPP
Point to Point Protocol. One of the suites
of TCP/IP protocols that are primarily
used in serial point to point
communications such as null modem,
dial up type PSTN and ISDN
connections.
Presets
Functionality that is supported by some
telemetry equipment. Position related
feedback is provided by the zoom lens
and pan/tilt head. Either the telemetry
receiver or matrix stores this feedback
whenever a position is stored as a
preset. The system operator can recall
preset positions very quickly with the
minimum of key presses.

Glossary of Terms
Privacy zone
A feature present on some CCTV
equipment to comply with the data
protection act. The feature allows
sensitive areas of a PTZ cameras view to
be blanked out so that they cannot be
viewed. Good implementations of
privacy allow the privacy areas to be
scaled according to the zoom ratio of the
camera, so they are small on wide angle
views and grow larger if an operator tries
to zoom in on a privacy area.
Protocol
A set of rules that govern how elements
of a system inter-communicate.
PSTN
Public Switched Telephone Network.
Standard analogue telephone system.
Quad
Either a 4 way video processing unit or
the 4 way screen generated by a video
multiplexer.
Rack mount
A recognised standard mounting system.
All equipment is 19" wide and a number
of units high. The unit of height is known
as ‘U’, 1U = 1.75".
RAID
Redundant array of independent drives
commonly used as extended storage on
DVRs in the CCTV environment. A
purpose built series of hard disk drives
that appear to the host as a single large
disk, this is achieved by a RAID
controller card that is built into the unit.
RAID arrays are normally SCSI based.
RAM
Random Access Memory. Digital memory
that can be both written to and read.
Resolution
A measurement of the ability of a piece
of CCTV equipment or system to display
detail. Measured in
TV lines.
ROM
Read Only Memory. Digital memory that
can only be read.
RS232
Data transmission presentation used in
many short distance serial data
applications.
RS422
4 wire balanced, party line multi-drop
data transmission presentation, used in
many telemetry and matrix switcher
networks. One pair is used for data
transmission and the other pair for data
reception.
RS485
2 wire balanced, party line multi-drop
data transmission presentation, used in
many telemetry and matrix switcher
62
networks. Can run in simplex or halfduplex mode.
SCSI
Small Computer System Interface. A fast
parallel data interface commonly found
as an external interface on digital
recorders.
Simplex
In electronic terms a device that can
either send or receive, but not both
simultaneously. In the CCTV environment
this refers to a video multiplexer that has
one frame store, which can record all
cameras to tape or generate multiscreen displays.
S video/SVHS
A method of transmitting video signals in
their two component parts, chroma and
luma. It provides higher resolution than
composite signalling but can only be
used over very short distances. Also
known as Y/C.
Sync
The timing information element of a
video signal.
Termination
System used to create an ideal matched
set of conditions on a transmission link.
Correct termination keeps signal levels
within specification and prevents
reflections and standing waves on the
link. In CCTV correct termination of the
video signal is extremely important so
that optimum picture quality without
distortion is achieved.
T1
Digital communications link that is most
commonly found in the USA and
Canada. T1 supports a data rate of
1.544 megabits per second.
TCP/IP
Transmission control protocol/Internet
protocol. Title given to a suite of
protocols that are used on computer
networks, without which the Internet
would
not be possible.
Telemetry
A system that provides camera control
via coding. The coding is either sent with
the video signal or is transmitted as data
via a network.
Terabyte
1024 Gigabytes = 1 Terabyte.
Terminal adaptor
A device that is the ISDN equivalent of a
modem. The terminal adaptor provides
an interface between the host and the
ISDN network termination box and
provides call set up and answering.
Termination
A method of matching electrical signals
to the transmission medium. In the CCTV
environment termination is important for
the video signals and also any data
networks using RS485 or RS422.
Time lapse VCR
A VCR that achieves extended recording
periods by slowing the tape motion
across the recording heads.
Tour
Facility provided by some CCTV control
systems where a PTZ camera or dome
can be programmed to tour between a
specified series of presets. It is usually
possible to program a dwell time to stay
at each preset and also a speed value at
which the camera will travel between
presets.
Twisted pair
Refers to a generic cable type, originally
from the telecommunications industry
where internal cable pairs are twisted
together equally for the entire cable
length. This type of cable is ideal for
balanced data transmission.
Varifocal lens
A lens that has an adjustable focal
length.
VDA
Video distribution amplifier. A device that
gives multiple video outputs from a
single video input. Generally used where
a single video signal has to feed multiple
pieces of equipment. Co axial telemetry
will not be passed through a VDA.
VMD
Video Motion Detection. A specialised
piece of equipment that is capable of
detecting changes in video images, then
creating a physical output and in some
cases an audible output. True VMD units
can manage to discern between weather,
light changes and even movement of the
tower or pole without alarming.
WAN
Wide area network. Geographically
dispersed network.
Worm
Write Once Read Many. Refers to digital
storage media that can be written to
once only.
Zoom ratio
A rating used to express the zoom
capability of a lens from wide angle to
narrow angle; it is calculated by dividing
the wide-angle value in mm by the
narrow angle value in mm. For example a
lens that has an 8mm wide angle and a
64mm narrow angle will be rated as 8:1.
10 base T
Terminology used to describe network
specification. In this case it literally
means 10 megabits per second,
baseband signalling, twisted pair cabling.
