MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

REQUIRED TOOLS:

• 1/4" and 5/16" Nut Drivers

• Flat Blade Screwdriver

• Assorted Hand Tools

• Torque Wrench

PRIOR TO REMOVAL

Please read the following instructions before installation.

REMOVAL INSTRUCTIONS

1. Remove the original mass air flow sensor (MAF).

a. Disconnect the ground cable from the battery. This prevents accidental starting and possible injury during MAF sensor installation. This also disables electric cooling fans that may come on even after the ignition has been turned off and the key removed.

NOTE: Disconnecting the battery ground cable erases preprogrammed electronic memo ries. Write down radio stations and other memory settings before disconnecting the ground cable. Reprogram these settings after the ground cable has been reconnected.

b. Locate the vehicle’s MAF sensor. Note how the harness connector lead plugs into the sensor. This is important for correctly installing the replace ment sensor.

c. CAREFULLY separate the har ness connector lead from the

MAF sensor.

d. Loosen the clamps securing the MAF sensor to the throttle body air cleaner ducts. If the clamps are re-usable, save them for installation on the replacement sensor. Remove brackets or other mounting hardware, if necessary.

NOTE: If the MAF sensor is mounted on the throttle body, remove and save the mounting screws for replacement sensor installation. e. Separate the MAF sensor from the air duct(s) or throttle body and remove it from the vehicle. Save MAF sensor-to-air-duct seal(s), if so equipped, for instal lation on the replacement unit.

f. Put the old MAF sensor into the carton to ensure core credit upon return (if required).

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

1. Position MAF sensor in the vehicle. Make sure the airflow direction indicated on the sensor is toward the engine. If equipped, the screen side of the sensor must be closest to the air filter housing.

2. Install sensor-to-air-duct seal(s), if so equipped, on the replacement MAF sensor.

3. Connect the MAF sensor to the throttle body air cleaner ducts. If the sensor mounts directly on the throttle body, install and tighten the mounting screws to specification. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN!

4. Position clamps over the air duct/MAF sensor connections and tighten. Replace the clamps if necessary.

NOTE: For the MAF sensor to work properly, the sensor/air duct connections must be airtight.

5. CAREFULLY plug the harness connector lead into the MAF sensor.

CAUTION:

TEXT

“SERVICE ENGINE SOON” OR “CHECK ENGINE” LIGHT MAY COME ON. DRIVEABILITY

PROBLEMS MAY ALSO OCCUR.

6. Remove the air cleaner cover and inspect the air filter. If the filter is dirty, wet or clogged, replace it with the air filter recommended by the vehicle’s manufacturer. Replace the air cleaner cover.

7. Connect the battery ground cable.

8. Start the engine and let it idle for a minute or two to veri fy correct

MAF sensor opera tion.

9. Clear diagnostic trouble codes using a scan tool.

10. If the “Service Engine Soon” or “Check Engine” light comes on or the engine stalls or runs roughly, turn the engine off. Observing safety precautions, check the harness connector plug at the MAF sensor for cor rect installation. Also check the harness connection at the MAF sensor relay, if so equipped. If this doesn’t correct the problem, refer to the vehicle’s service manual for troubleshooting instructions.
