Introduction
The IEEE488 standard, also known as GPIB, is a
bus interface that connects instruments with a
computer to form an ATE system. GPIB was initially
developed by Hewlett Packard and was recognized
as an IEEE standard in 1978. The IEEE488.1-1978
standard defines the convention for electrical and
mechanical bus characteristics, as well as the state
diagram for each bus function. In 1987, another
standard derived from IEEE488.1-1978, known as
IEEE488.2-1987, was introduced to define data
formats, common commands, and control protocols
for instruments. In general, IEEE488.1 defines the
hardware specification, and IEEE488.2 defines the
software specification. The IEEE488 standard has
been widely accepted by instrument vendors for
decades. Today, GPIB is the most popular interface
between computer and instruments.

IEEE488 cables. It is designed to meet the
requirements for high performance and maximum
programming portability with 1KB on-board FIFO
and a block transfer mode provide up to 1.5MB/s
GPIB transfer rate. With an NI-like driver API and
VISA support, the PCI-3488 provides the greatest
compatibility with your existing applications and
instrument drivers.
Performance
ADLINK’s expertise in PCI interface cards was
leveraged when developing this newly designed
GPIB controller. The PCI-3488 supports both 3.3V
and 5V PCI buses and can be adapted to most
industrial and desktop computers. A 1KB on-board
FIFO is placed between the GPIB bus and PCI
controller to buffer GPIB read and write operations.
The FIFO eliminates the gap between the slow GPIB
bus (~1.5MB/s) and the fast PCI bus (132MB/s), and
dramatically increases overall system performance.

A native driver API is provided by most GPIB
interface vendors and is usually in the form of ANSI
C functions. For users who need more detailed
control over GPIB instruments, using a driver API
with SCPI string commands is a good choice. For
others who want to keep away from complicated
instrument commands, instrument drivers
developed for specific ADEs (ex. LabVIEW/
TestExec) can significantly simplify the complexity
of instrument control. Most of the instrument drivers
use a VISA library to control the GPIB interface and
communicate with instruments. VISA support is

ADEs (Application Development Environments),
the environment where applications are written, are

Introduction
ADLINK PXIS-3320 is a 19" 6U PXI chassis providing 14 PXI peripheral slots in a system. The chassis is
PXIS-3320 Front
compliant with the PXI and CompactPCI specifications and both PXI and CompactPCI modules can be
used. The internal 10 MHz reference clock is available on all of the 14 PXI slots, as well as star trigger, PXI
trigger bus, and PXI local bus.
The PXIS-3320 series is equipped with industrial-grade 500 W power supply to provide reliable and
cost-effective power to the system. The status of system power supply, temperature, and cooling fans
are monitored by the alarm module assembled in the chassis. Once any failure is detected, a
corresponding LED and buzzer will be activated. The failure fans can be removed from the front panel
and are hot-swappable, which can reduce MTTR (Mean-Time-To-Repair) efficiently.
Moreover, the backplane of the PXIS-3320 supports custom power supply. The design of the backplane,
cBX-6015, allows users to connect custom power to the P4 connector. Up to 3 different custom power supplies
could be wired to the backplane. The PXIS-3320 also provides rear IO connection on P5. With both features,
users could develop their own PXI module to use custom power supplies, and effectively shorten the signal
paths through rear IO. PXIS-3320 is ideal for high density, high power, and high speed testing applications.

Introduction
ADLINK PXIS-2680P is a highly integrated and fully mobile 3U PXI instrument chassis offering 8-slot
capacity for modules. Defined as the next generation solution for rugged portables, the PXIS-2680P has
many high impacts, surpassingly flexible, and exceedingly powerful characteristics. It features one system
slot and seven PXI/CompactPCI peripheral slots. The PXIS-2680P provides multiple input devices, like an
integrated keyboard, a touch pad, as well as the touch panel LCD. This integrated PXI portable chassis also
implements complete PXI functionalities, including PXI trigger bus, start trigger, PXI local bus, and a 10MHz
reference clock. Users could achieve synchronization between modules through the design of the PXIS2680P.
The PXIS-2680P combines a 15" SVGA LCD touch screen. No additional LCD, touch panel, or keyboard
wiring is required when using either the ADLINK PXD-3710/3710F or the PXI-3800 system controller as all
necessary wiring has been integrated into the design of the PXIS-2680P. The build-in DVD combo drive is
suitable for a high speed recording or backup of valuable information. A pair of 300 W + 300 W redundant
power modules are equipped with the chassis, which make the PXIS-2680P ideal for critical applications.
PXIS-2680P features two fans for cooling purpose, and they provides a air flow up to 79 CFM.
Users could develop the test & measurement applications either on standard PXI systems or directly on the

Introduction
The ADLINK PXIS-2670 is a 19” 3U PXI chassis providing 13 PXI peripheral
slots and one system slot with one PXI-to-PXI bridge. The PXIS-2670 is
compliant with PXI and CompactPCI specifications and supports both PXI and
CompactPCI modules. The internal 10MHz reference clock is available on all 13
PXI slots and the PXI trigger bus is divided into two segments with each segment
consisting of 7 slots. Star trigger signals are available on slots 3 through 13.
The PXIS-2670 is equipped with two industrial-grade 250W CompactPCI power
supplies, the cPS-H325/AC, to provide reliable power to the system. Each power
module can be removed from the front panel to reduce MTTR (mean time to
repair). System power supply status, temperature, and cooling fans are
monitored by an alarm module built in to the chassis. When any cooling fan fails,
a LED and buzzer will be actuated. The malfunctioning fan is hot-swappable and
can be removed from the front panel. DC input power modules are also available.

Introduction
ADLINK PCI/PXI-8570 extension kit is a PCI-to-PXI or PXI-to-PXI extension module that
functions as a transparent PCI-PCI bridge register set. Implementing master and slave
extension modules, users can have direct control on PXI/CompactPCI chassis from any
other PC or another PXI/CompactPCI system. All devices on the system are deemed to
be local devices on the same PCI bus.
The PCI interface supports 64-bit or 32-bit PCI buses operating at 66 MHz or 33MHz. By
adopting shielded twisted copper cables, PCI-8570/PXI-8570 can extend the transmission
distance in no less than 10 m. One master extension card (either PCI-8570 or PXI-8570)
can expand up to 2 slave extension modules (PXI-8570) at the same time. A bundled link
can support the full bandwidth of 64-bit/66 MHz PCI bus. All interrupts asserted by add-in
cards in the extension system are passed through the extension set to the host system.
With ADLINK PCI/PXI-8570, users can combine PCI, CompactPCI, and PXI devices in the
same system, increase the available number of PXI/CompactPCI slots for high density I/O
application and separate a control system from a harsh environment with an extension
chassis.

The PCI/PXI-8570 employs a serial interconnect technology, 622 MB/s low voltage differential signaling (LVDS). Each PCI/PXI-8570 extension module has two link
ports, Link 0 and Link 1. Each link is divided into transmit (TX) and receive (RX). Four TX and RX differential pairs in each link are used to provide 2.5 Gbps full
duplex link bandwidth or 5 Gbps of total bandwidth. Incorporated with the high speed serial LVDS, it is easy to extend the transmission up to 10 meters through
shielded twisted pair copper cables.
Inside the PCI-to-PCI bridge, a PCI-to-StarFabric/StarFabric-to-PCI converter is used to translate PCI transactions into StarFabric frames and StarFabric frames into
PCI transactions. The PCI interface of the PCI/PXI-8570 is capable of 64-bit/66 MHz. Thus the maximum data throughput can up to 528 MB/s. The PCI interface in PCI/PXI-8570
acts like the primary side of a PCI-to-PCI bridge if PCI/PXI-8570 is plugged into the peripheral slot. The PCI interface in PXI-8570 acts like the secondary side of a
PCI-to-PCI bridge if PXI-8570 is plugged into the system slot. The secondary side PCI interface of PCI-to-PCI bridge is responsible to the central resources and
system clocks generation.
Bus Architecture
Each PCI/PXI-8570 extension module has two link ports. Users can use one of them to extend PCI bus to a PXI chassis or both of them to extend PCI bus to two PXI
chassis.
The following figure represents an example of the PCI extension architecture. The desktop PC or PXI system extends the PCI bus to two PXI chassis via PCI/PXI8570 modules. From the system view, the three PCI/PXI-8570 modules act as three PCI-to-PCI bridges. Thus the serial interconnection between these bridges is
also a bus, i.e. bus 1 in this example, although it's not PCI architecture.

Introduction
The ADLINK PXI-9710 is a 1-Ch high-speed
PXI/CompactPCI digitizer featuring a 500MS/s
sampling rate, 250MHz bandwidth, and 8MB deep
sample memory. Fast sampling rates and wide
bandwidth are necessary to accurately capture high
frequency signals, and the long sample memory
allows long term recording. The PXI-9710 also offers
precise and accurate measurements and a low
overall system noise design to make it the ideal
digitizer for telecommunications, automotive, military,
computing, and research fields.
Two PXI-9710 digitizers linked by ASBus will act as
one instrument with two input channels and two
external inputs, for an external trigger and an
external clock, such as a 10 MHz PLL reference.
Large Sample Memory
Large memories are essential for maintaining
sampling rate and timing resolution when capturing
complex signals. The PXI-9710 can record a signal
over a 16ms period with a sampling rate of 500MS/s
(2ns per point). A fast sampling rate ensures that all
high frequency signal components, up to the full
250MHz bandwidth of the digitizer, are accurately
recorded over this long period.
Multichannel Acquisition
The PXI-9710 is a single-slot PXI/CompactPCI
module ideal for use in multi-channel bench-top
applications as well as in high-density rack-mounted
systems. It includes ASBus, a proprietary high
bandwidth auto-synchronous bus system (courtesy
of Acqiris technology), for multi-channel applications,
ASBus takes care of the distribution of all necessary
trigger and clock signals for up to 7 modules. The
system improves trigger flexibility by allowing any
input or external signal input to be used as the
trigger source for all the digitizers. ASBus can also
be used to clock all the digitizers at precisely the
same time.

Flexible Trigger
The PXI-9710 digitizer includes a trigger system with
full pre- and post-trigger adjustment. User selectable
coupling is combined with internal or external trigger
sources for maximum flexibility. The digitizer also
provides a sophisticated sequential trigger mode
with less than 1.1£gs dead time between successive
triggers. This extremely low dead time enables
events, which may occur at very high repetition
rates, to be captured and stored in their correct
arrival sequence. This trigger mode is perfect for
applications such as time-of-flight measurements,
radar, sonar, LIDAR, ultrasonic and acoustic
microscopy. The sequential trigger mode and very
low dead time greatly extend the digitizers timing
range and resolution. Each event can be individually
time stamped and relative time measurements,
between events, can be made with less than 1ns
resolution.
Precision Time Base
Signal Conditioning
The signal input of each PXI-9710 digitizer has a
programmable amplifier which provides a complete
set of voltage ranges (from 50mV to 5V full scale in
a 1, 2, 5 sequence) and variable voltage offset. The
inputs have selectable impedances (50Ω or 1MΩ)
and are fully protected against over-voltage signals.
The amplifiers feature internal calibration on
demand (no need to disconnect input signals) and
fast recovery from out-of- range signals. The input
buffer is mounted on a removable mezzanine card,
allowing fast and efficient replacement in the event
of accidental damage or as components fatigue over
time (e.g. relays in high duty cycle automated testing
applications).
Each PXI-9710 digitizer has its own crystalcontrolled precision time base. Sample rates can be
selected, in a 1, 2, 2.5, 4, 5 sequence, from 100S/s
to 500MS/s. An internal Trigger Time Interpolator
(TTI) with high timing resolution (80ps) is used to
assist with timing calibration and trigger positioning.
The TTI permits accurate positioning of the trigger
point with regard to the internal clock (sampling
time).
The sample rate can also be generated externally
using the external input connector for applications
where the sample rate must be synchronized with
the signal to be acquired.

Introduction
ADLINK PXI-9820 is a 65 MS/s, high-resolution PXI
digitizer with deep SODIMM SDRAM memory. The
device features flexible input configurations, including
programmable input ranges and user-selectable input
impedance. With the deep on-board acquisition memory,
the PXI-9820 is not limited by the 132 MB/s bandwidth
of PCI bus and can record the waveform for a long
period of time. The PXI-9820 is ideal for high-speed
waveform capturing, such as radar and ultrasound
applications, as well as software radio applications, or
those signal digitizing applications which need deep
memory for data storage.
Analog Input
The PXI-9820 device features two analog input
channels. The small signal bandwidth of each channel
exceeds 30 MHz. The input ranges are programmable
as either ±5 V or ±1 V. The 14-bit A/D resolution makes
the PXI-9820 ideal both for time-domain and frequencydomain applications.
Acquisition System
ADLINK PXI-9820 device uses a pair of 65 MS/s, 14-bit
pipeline ADCs to digitize the input signals, and the
device provides an internal 60 MHz timebase for data
acquisition. The maximum real-time sampling rate is 60
MS/s with internal timebase, and is up to 65 MS/s with
external timebase. By using the "ping pong" mode, the
sampling rate is up to 120 MS/s with internal timebase
or 130 MS/s with external timebase.
Acquisition Memory
The PXI-9820 device supports different size of
SODIMM SDRAM ranging from 128 MB to 512 MB.

Triggering
Thanks to PXI versatile trigger functions, the PXI-9820
device features flexible triggering functionalities, such
as analog and digital triggering. The analog trigger
features programmable trigger thresholds on rising or
falling edges on both input channels. The 5 V/TTL
digital trigger comes from PXI trigger bus or the
external SMB connector for synchronizing multiple
devices.
Post-trigger, pre-trigger, delay-trigger and middletrigger modes are available to acquire data around the
trigger event. The PXI-9820 also features repeated
trigger acquisition, so you can acquire data in multiple
segments coming with successive trigger events at
extremely short rearming interval.
Multiple-Instrument Synchronization
The PXI-9820 implements star trigger and trigger
bus to route timing and trigger signals between one
or more PXI-9820 and other PXI modules. These
interfaces allow users to synchronize multiple PXI
modules into a system easily. Timebase is also
selectable. Users could choose using internal clock
or the output of the onboard PLL with the reference
clock from external clock input or PXI 10 MHz
reference clock.
Synchronous Digital Inputs
SDI (synchronous digital input) is the digital input
synchronously sampled with analog input. The digital
inputs are latched right with the clock edge while the
analog signals are sampled, and the digital input
combining the 14-bit analog data are stored into
SDRAM. This functions is ideal for mixed signal
acquisition.

Calibration
The auto-calibration function of the PXI-9820 is
performed with trim DACs to calibrate the offset and
gain errors of the analog input channels. Once the
calibration process is done, the calibration constant will
be stored in EEPROM such that these values can be
loaded and used as needed by the board. Because all
the calibration is conducted automatically by software
commands, users don't have to adjust trimpots to
calibrate the modules manually.

PXI Trigger Bus
The digitized data are stored in the on-board SDRAM
before being transferred to the host memory. The PXI9820 device uses the scatter-gather bus mastering
DMA to move data to the host memory. If the data
throughput from the PXI-9820 is less than the available
PCI bus bandwidth, the PXI-9820 also features onboard 3k-sample FIFO to achieve real-time transfer
bypassing the SDRAM, directly to the host memory.

The SMX2040 series is a 3U PXI 6-1/2 digit Digital Multimeter which provides a
combination of resolution, accuracy, and speed that surpasses rivals. A 6-1/2 digit
display, 0.0045% basic DCV accuracy and 1,000 readings per second assure
accurate, fast, and repeatable measurements. The SMX2040 series is designed
as a universal, multifunctional DMM. Measurements commonly associated with
"high-end" system DMMs are standard features with the SMX2040 family, such
as 2-wire, 4-wire and 6-wire guarded resistance measurements, inductance and
capacitance, leakage and temperature, RMS and peak-to-peak, frequency and
timing, sourcing of voltage and current, and much more. The SMX2044 is best
suited for applications demanding precision sources with simultaneous
measurements such as in Parametric testing, while the SMX2040 fits the bill
where basic DMM functions are required, such as telecommunication,
aerospace, automotive and education fields.

Introduction
ADLINK PXI-7901 is a general-purpose (GP) switch module implementing 16-CH independent single-pole

ADLINK PXI-7931 is a matrix module with 32 cross-point 2-wire relays (DPDT, 2 Form C). The default
configuration of the PXI-7931 itself is a 4-group 2x4 2-wire matrix. With the termination board, TB-6231,
users could flexibly choose one of the configurations: one 4x8, two 4x4, one 2x16, two 2x8 and four 2x4. Any
contact of the PXI-7931 can connect to other contacts, individually or in combination. The PXI-7931 matrix
module simplifies the wiring and makes it easy to change the internal connection path.

The contact position of the relays can be changed either by direct software commands or by following the
instructions previously stored in the on-board scan list. The scan list advances upon the trigger from external
measurement devices, such as a DMM. The scan list could also advance when the scan-delay timer expires.
In the PXI-7931, PXI trigger functions are supported and software programmable. Multiple modules can
therefore be synchronized without additional field wiring.

ADLINK PCI-7260 is the world's first PCI-bus, high-power relay output card for industrial automation and
machine control. The design of PCI-7260 conforms to EN61010-1 safety standard. All eight channels are
capable to switch 5A current at 250VAC or 5A current at 30VDC. Its pluggable front-panel connector gives
consideration to both carrying high current and easy wiring. The PCI-7260 also provides eight isolated digital
input channels with debouncer capability. Users may monitor the digital inputs by handling the hardware
interrupt generated when DI status changes or CH0 & CH1 transitions from low to high.

The LPCI-7200S performs high-speed data transfers using bus-mastering DMA via 32-bit PCI bus architecture.
The maximum data transfer rates can be up to 12 MB per second. Several digital I/O transfer modes are

ADLINK LPCI-7230 is a 16-CH isolated digital input and 16-CH isolated digital output module with low profile
PCI size. The device supports 3.3V and 5V PCI bus and provides a robust 2,500 V isolation protection which is
suitable for most industrial applications. The wide input range makes the LPCI-7230 easy to sense the status of
external devices. A potential difference of 3 to 24 V between two input terminals is logic high. Logic low is

ADLINK DAQ-2213 and DAQ-2214 are low-cost
multifunction DAQ cards. The devices can sample up
to 16 AI channels with different gain settings and
scan sequences. It makes them ideal for dealing with
analog signals with various input ranges and
sampling speeds. These devices also offer
differential mode for 8 AI channels in order to
achieve maximum noise elimination.
In addition to the analog input functions, DAQ-2214
features 2-CH 12-bit analog outputs. The analog
outputs are capable of waveform generation. The
DAQ-2213 and DAQ-2214 also feature analog and
digital triggering, 24-CH programmable digital I/O

Introduction
Advanced 4 axes Motion Controller
ADLINK PXI-8164/PCI-8164 is an advanced 4-axis motion control card.
Compared with the PCI-8132/34 series, PCI-8164/PXI-8164 offers better linear
and circular interpolated move and continuous contouring performance-ideal for
advanced pulse train motion control solutions and complicated motion and pickand-place applications.
Velocity or Position Override
The PXI-8164/PCI-8164 provides powerful position or speed changing function
while axis is moving. After motion begins, target of speed or position can be
changed on the fly at the user's discretion.
Linear & Circular Interpolation
In multi-axis operation, the PXI-8164/PCI-8164 provides linear interpolation by
any 2, any 3, or even all-4 axes. Besides any 2 axes can perform circular
interpolation.
Continuous Contouring
The pre-register architecture of PXI-8164/PCI-8164 offers the feature to build the
continuous interpolation function, ie, the 2nd motion may follow previous motion
instantly without latency. Thus perfect velocity continuity can be established.
Hardware Position Compare and Trigger Output
The PXI-8164/PCI-8164 provides position compare and trigger functions. The
CMP channel will output a trigger pulse when encoder counter reached the
compared value preset by user. Comparison is done by hardware, and an onboard FIFO is implemented to automatically reload the comparing data. Thus, the
trigger rate can reach 15KHz, while almost no CPU resource is needed. The
trigger pulse width is about 30µS.
Position Latch
The latch function is to capture the instant counter value of one certain axis when
the latch signal activates. The LTC channel is used to receive the latch pulse. The
latch function is implemented with hardware.
Automatic Backlash Compensation
Whenever direction change is occurred, the PXI-8164/PCI-8164 outputs backlash
corrective pulses before sending commands. During interpolation mode, this
function will be ineffective.

To fit into various mechanical design and operating restrictions, the PXI8164/PCI-8164 provides 13 home moving modes for users to choose as their
best convenience.
Simultaneously Start/Stop
By using software program or external input signal, the PXI-8164/PCI-8164 can
perform simultaneously start/stop function on multi-axis in one card or multiaxis in multi-card. Also, the simultaneously stop function is selectable to be
active when some axes are abnormally stopped.

Background & Technology
Several data acquisition applications need to continuously acquire and record
high volumes of data for off-line processing. However, due to disk speed
limitations and file system overhead, it's always a challenge to acquire and record
data in real-time without any data loss. With the current method, a proprietary
disk control card is used to transfer the acquired data from another proprietary
data acquisition device to a disk array via the front panel connection (i.e. FPDP).
Introducing proprietary devices increases costs, making it priced out of reach for
many users that require high-speed data recording system.
ADLINK introduced a revolutionary concept to utilize commercial SCSI devices
and data acquisition cards to make high-speed data recording affordable. By
combining a precise DMA control from DAQ card to SCSI hard disk and raw disk
access capability, 40MB/s real-time data recording rate is achievable in existing
computer architecture.

DAQStreaming can be equipped with diversified data acquisition modules to fit
different types of signals. For example, DAQStreaming-A1 is ideal for high
frequency or "burst" signals whereas DAQStreaming-S1 is suitable for multichannel simultaneous signals.

DAQStreaming integrates commercial hardware components and user
applications into a single turnkey system. Based on commercial computer

Signal Surveillance
Product Spotlight
In signal surveillance applications, users continuously acquire different kinds of
signals (analog or digital) and need to store the signals to disk for off-line
processing. A typical application is airborne remote sensing, which uses
different sensors to sense visible light, infrared or ultraviolet, and processes
the acquired data to generate terrain/weather images. In the past, airborne
remote sensing facilities can only generate discrete images because there is
no proper solution to continuously capture and store such large volumes of
data. The introduction of DAQStreaming is breakthrough for continuous image
acquisition. In airborne remote sensing applications, the analog output of each
infrared sensor is converted to an 8-bit digital signal and is fed to the input of
DAQStreaming system. With the 40MB/s data recording capability, all
information along the flight course can be recorded, and continuous images
can be generated during off-line processing.
Vibration and Shock Testing
Vibration and shock testing is crucial for many products-motor vehicles,
aerospace structures, military electronics, railway equipment and so on. During
vibration and shock testing, users apply vibrations or impacts to a UUT (Unit
Under Test), and sense the generated signals for a long period of time. All
signals should be recorded in real-time for further analysis. DAQStreaming-S1
provides 8 simultaneous analog input channels, which is ideal for the phaserelated vibration or shock signals. With its 40MB/s recording rate, all generated
signals from the UUT can be faithfully recorded during the whole process.
Destructive Testing
In destructive testing, tests are carried out until the specimen fails. During the
testing process, loads/stresses/shocks are applied to the specimen and the
reactions of specimen are recorded. Under critical situations, a breakdown of
specimen occurs. A breakdown is usually a "burst" signal, an abrupt wave of
abundant data. A high-speed data acquisition is needed to capture this data.
DAQStreaming-A1 is equipped with a 20MS/s, 12-bit DAQ module and is
suitable for recording burst signals during the destructive testing procedure.
