An earthquake is a sudden, rapid shaking of the earth caused by the breaking and
shifting of rock beneath the earth’s surface. Earthquakes strike suddenly, without warning,
and they can occur at any time of the year, day or night. Most earthquake-related deaths are
caused by the collapse of structures and the construction practices play a tremendous role
in the death toll of an earthquake.
In the Philippines, noted earthquake
happening was on October 15, 2013 which
caused many destruction especially in Bohol,
Central Visayas. According to the National
Disaster Risk Reduction and Management
Council (NDRRMC), there were 8 missing and 976
people injured in the said incident.
In a fire drill, the building should be
evacuated while the alarm, signaled by three (3)
short sounds followed by a long sound, is
ongoing. In an earthquake drill, the siren/bell
alarm is continuous for one (1) minute. While the alarm is ongoing, the occupants of the
building are to execute the proper response and evacuate after the alarm stops. There are
four (4) stages of an earthquake drill:
earthquake drill which involves the
creation of teams with specific tasks
such as fire and safety team, first aid
team and evacuation team. It also
involves evaluating the office/building,
ground area, and access and exit points.;
Second, developing the earthquake
evaluation plan. Safe areas are under a
sturdy tables and strong supported
doorway while unsafe areas are glass
windows and furniture that may topple
during the shaking must be avoided; third, orientation prior to the conduct of an earthquake
drill. People must be prepared before the conduct of an earthquake drill and that they should
know what to expect during a strong earthquake; and Fourth, the actual conduct of an
earthquake drill.
Natural calamities such as earthquake is a disaster waiting to happen at any time and
any place. One must be prepared at all cost. All must be alarm, should response, evacuate,
assemble and of course, head count.
