INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY SAMPLING TECHNIQUES
Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR)
Diffuse Reflectance
A sampling technique which requires little to no sample
preparation. A beam of infrared light passes through the
ATR crystal and is reflected off the surface of the sample.
The reflection forms an evanescent wave which is
collected by a detector.
Diffusely scattered light is collected when a beam of light
reflects off a rough, matt surface e.g. powder or fiber.
SAMPLE TYPES: Solid, Liquid, Powder
APPLICATIONS: Identification of powders and
polymers. Quantitative measurements for liquids,
including aqueous solutions.

Specular Reflectance
Transmission
A mirror-like reflection occurs when a beam of light strikes
a smooth, shiny surface such that the angle of incidence
equals the angle of reflection.
When radiation passes through a body
a proportion of the energy is absorbed by the sample
and the remainder travels on to the detector.

PREMIUM
An excellent general accessory for the
analysis of solids and liquids. The UATR
produces high quality spectra through
the use of a pressure arm allowing good
contact of the sample with the diamond
crystal. The pressure arm force indicator
ensures first-class sample-to-sample and
operator-to-operator reproducibility. The
accessory is recognized when it is placed
in the sample compartment, the optics are automatically optimized
and the system is ready to be used without additional alignment.
Description
A single reflection HATR accessory designed for the analysis of
highly absorbing solid, semi-liquid and liquid samples. The sampling

The GladiATR Vision™ (PIKE)
A high performance single reflection monolithic diamond ATR
product offer, featuring a Type IIIA diamond ATR element metalbonded into a tungsten carbide mount to provide outstanding
durability and exceptional chemical resistance. The robust design
allows this ATR accessory to be used to achieve high-quality
spectral data in the analysis of a broad range of materials including
those that are abrasive, hard, reactive, or corrosive. A sampling tool which couples small area infrared analysis
with simultaneous viewing. Samples are placed face down and
positioned on the diamond crystal while its image is projected in
real-time on the LCD screen. Analysis of thick or non-transparent
samples is enhanced because viewing is through the diamond
crystal. The 110X magnification of the sample image enables the
positioning of small samples for optimized analysis.

The Variable Angle ATR (VATR) Accessory (PIKE)
This accessory has the ATR crystal mounted vertically and an optical
layout is based on an optimized Gilby configuration and allows
continuous adjustment of the incident beam angle between 30 to

Selecting Window Materials
WIDE SELECTION
The following information may be helpful in selecting window materials:
• Sodium Chloride (NaCl) is one of the most versatile window
materials available, due to its spectral range and low cost. Samples should
not contain water because NaCl is hygroscopic. This will cause the
windows to fog and become unusable. Store NaCl cells in a desiccator
when not in use. NaCl withstands mechanical stress and can be used up
to 400 °C.
OF SAMPLING CELLS AND
WINDOW MATERIALS
• Potassium Bromide (KBr) has a slightly wider spectral range than NaCl
but is more hygroscopic. Although able to provide good resistance to
mechanical shock, KBr is easily cleaved. KBr can be used up to 300 °C.
• Calcium Fluoride (CaF2) is extremely hard and stable. CaF2 is not
significantly affected by moisture and does not fog. While resistant to
most acids and bases, CaF2 should not be used with ammonium salts.
PerkinElmer offers a versatile product line of liquid sampling cells
which utilize a specially designed Universal mount suitable for
both FT-IR and dispersive instruments, and a wide variety of highquality window materials to meet your analytical needs. These
windows are polished to precise tolerances of flatness.
• Barium Fluoride (BaF2) is a relatively hard material, similar to CaF2.
Though less resistant to water than CaF2, BaF2 has a wider spectral range.
The useful temperature range extends to 500 °C. Also, BaF2 should not
be used with ammonium salts.
The first criteria to consider when selecting a window material
is the wavelength range over which the spectrum must be
measured.
• Thallium Bromide-Iodide (KRS-5) has a broad spectral range and a
high refractive index, making it ideal for internal reflectance accessories.
KRS-5 is slightly soluble in water and bases but insoluble in acids;
KRS-5 is toxic and should not be repolished.
Other important considerations include solubility, reactivity, and
the refractive index of the window material with respect to the
sample. Sometimes mechanical and thermal characteristics may
also be important.
• Silver Bromide (AgBr) is easily scratched and has a tendency to cold flow
at room temperature. Although only minimally degraded by water, AgBr
will corrode after prolonged contact with moisture and metals. Avoid
exposure to ultraviolet lights, as the crystal has a tendency to darken.
• Zinc Selenide (Irtran-4™) is similar to Cleartran except that it is
somewhat softer and more easily scratched. Irtran-4 is used in total
reflectance accessories because of its high refractive index.

Sealed Liquid Cells

AND QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS
The sealed liquid cells have a corrosion-resistant
construction making them ideal for highly
volatile samples. The sealed liquid cells are ideal
for quantitative analysis where you require an

accurate reproducible cell thickness. These cells
use a lead spacer which is amalgamated
to the window material. The resultant bond forms a good
leak-free seal which is effective in preventing evaporation and
loss of sample. The sealed liquid cell is an integral unit and
cannot be disassembled.
The sample filling orifice is compatible with Luer-Lok™ hypodermic
syringes. Two syringes are recommended when cleaning the cell.
Never use viscous materials which are difficult to remove from a
sealed liquid cell. Instead, use a semi-demountable cell.

The most important criterion for the choice of a particular type
of glass is the spectral range for which the cell is intended. Color
logos are fused onto each PerkinElmer cell, thus indicating the
spectral range over which the cell can be used.

Indicates that SCHOTT type UK 5 is used for cells referred to in the
catalog as manufactured from “Special Optical Glass”. This crown
glass is made from exceptionally pure raw materials, which gives
an improved transmission in the near ultraviolet range. An empty
cell will give a transmission of more than 80% over a spectral
range of between 320 nm and 2,500 nm.
SUPRASIL UV Quartz 200 nm - 2,500 nm
Indicates that quartz of the highest purity and homogeneity has
been used for the window. Because it is produced from a silicon
compound, it is also called synthetic quartz. SUPRASIL gives
transmission values of more than 80% over a spectral range of
between 200 nm and 2,500 nm for an empty cell.

Disposable cells greatly reduce the risk of contamination, remove
the need for cleaning reagents and lower laboratory costs as
compared to quartz or glass cells.
Disposable cells are available in polystyrene and polymethyl
methacrylate either as macro or semi-micro cells. Additionally,
disposable cells are available in a special UV transparent material
in macro, semi-micro and micro cells. The useful spectral range
for UV material is between 220 and 900 nm, for polymethyl
methacrylate it is 300 and 900 nm and for polystyrene it is
340 and 900 nm.
Each cell has a standard light path of 10 mm and is suitable for
any UV/Vis Spectrophotometer which accommodates cells with a
center height of 15 mm.
Color coded caps can be ordered for the micro UV transparent
cells which allow samples to be stored down to -20 °C.

PerkinElmer’s unique Universal Reflectance Accessory (URA) is the
only fully-automated, multi-angle, absolute specular reflectance
accessory available today. For the Lambda 650/850/950/1050.
For relative specular reflectance studies which require data from
more than one angle of incidence, the variable angle accessory
is ideal. The angular range is from 15 to 70° with an accuracy
of +/- 1°. Typical applications include the study of the how the
reflectivity of a sample changes with change of incident angle.

Simply place the sample on the horizontal sampling plate, select
the required measurement angles with a few mouse clicks and
scan. Unlike traditional methods, the URA automatically and

PerkinElmer’s range of snap-in integrating spheres is the industry
standard for the measurement of total reflectance, diffuse
reflectance and diffuse transmittance measurements for a
huge range of sample types. The 150 mm Integrating Sphere
is the recommended accessory for measurement of total solar
reflectance and transmittance in the glass industry and for the
measurement of UV transmittance of paint films in the automotive
industry. Many national laboratories use it in R&D studies and for

Common-beam Depolarizer
When samples are oriented and polarize incident light, it is
important to correct for the inherent polarizing effect of the
spectrometer’s optics by using a depolarizer. Another important
application is to make measurements using a specific orientation of
incident radiation e.g. for crystalline materials and polymers.
Another approach to depolarization involves the use of a software
controlled depolarizer inside the spectrometer. Driven by a stepper
drive, and controlled by UV WinLab™ software, the Common-beam
Depolarizer operates between 190 and 2,600 nm uses a doublewedge quartz/Suprasil design for 92% depolarization efficiency.

purity and low thermal expansion rate. Because we care about
your safety, all combustion tubes are pressure-tested to eliminate
