CA ARCserve Backup r12 - Cluster Support With the spiraling cost of downtime and the increased need for application availability 24x7, enterprises are constantly looking for ways that provide high application availability while controlling costs. Keeping in mind this concern, CA brings easy-to-use solutions with its support for cluster aware installation in MSCS and NEC cluster environment to provide round-the-clock application availability with minimum impact to business continuity. Overview CA ARCserve Primary/Member/Stand-alone servers achieve continuous application availability with their support for MSCS and NEC cluster aware installations. ARCserve database (SQL/SQL Express) can also be implemented as cluster aware. Benefits • Round-the-clock availability of CA ARCserve Backup server. • Increased success rate of backups and restores when a failover occurs. When a failover happens, CA ARCserve server ensures that no manual intervention is required to restart services on other nodes. Active/crashed jobs that have failed are taken over by another node. It also takes care to ensure that the Jobs scheduled in future will continue to run as expected. Install Installation of cluster node is a simple process, similar to the normal installation procedure. CA ARCserve Backup server should be installed onto the shared disk by selecting Cluster Environment Installation option in the installation wizard. CA ARCserve in a cluster environment supports the following cluster platforms - Microsoft Cluster Server (MSCS) on X86/X64/IA64 Windows server and NEC ClusterPro/ExpressCluster 8.0 for Windows and NEC ClusterPro/ExpressCluster X 1.0 for Windows. Objective: To install/configure ARCserve on Clusters. Pre-requisite: ARCserve Backup Cluster Group is created with Shared Disk, Virtual IP, and Virtual Name resources. ARCserve as clu ster aware applicatio n can also b e installed on existing cluster aware resource groups. Process: After installation of ARCserve server onto the shared disk from all the nodes in the cluster, a post setup screen pops up with an option to create HA resources. Even though the post setup screen pops up after every installation from cluster nodes, this option must be checked only after completing installation from the last node in the cluster. Checking this option after installing CA ARCserve Backup on the last node in the cluster triggers the creation of HA resources. Getting the ARCserve cluster resources manually online brings ARCserve services online. CA ARCserve Cluster Deployment When a job is running on a Primary/Member server and the server fails over, CA ARCserve makes sure that after the failover the job that had failed “because of the failover” is resumed automatically from the last failure point. The “job resume” can be at the volume level or node level. Cluster aware CA ARCserve Backup server supports two types of failovers. Planned Failover: Planned failovers occur when it is necessary to perform maintenance on the active node within a cluster. It can be performed by migrating CA ARCserve cluster resources from an active node to a passive node from the cluster administrator. Unplanned Failovers: Unplanned failovers occur because of hardware or software failures. ARCserve Database Failover with SQL Server CA ARCserve r12 supports SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (default) and SQL Server Standard/Enterprise edition as its database. Depending on the differences of cluster platforms (MSCS/NEC) and whether SQL database can be deployed as cluster aware application or not, different strategies are adopted. The below table displays the supported cluster and SQL database combinations. Cluster Platform MSCS MSCS MSCS NEC NEC SQL Server Type (Local) SQL SQL SQL SQL SQL Express Standard/Enterprise (but non-cluster) Enterprise Cluster Express Standard/Enterprise (cluster/non-cluster) Supported Yes No Yes Yes No SQL Server Express + MSCS Though SQL Server Express Edition is not a cluster aware application in MSCS, CA supports it by providing extra configurations: 1. 2. By creating ARCserve database onto a shared disk during setup. But the SQL server meta database should be kept in %program_file%\SQLserver. By registering SQL Server Express instance in MSCS as a managed resource. This puts ARCserve database under control of MSCS as well as ARCserve. SQL Server 2005 Express + NEC Cluster Though SQL Server Express Editions are not native cluster aware applications in NEC cluster environment, CA supports it by providing customized failover script. 1. By installing SQL Server’s system database (binaries, master, model etc.) on the Operating System partition and installing ARCserve database onto the shared disk hosted by ARCserve to make sure the active and passive nodes share the same database files. 2. By customizing failover script to make sure that ARCserve database is always attached to the new active node in case of failover. Frequently Asked Questions Q. A. What are the components that CA ARCserve supports as cluster aware? CA ARCserve supports server and database as cluster aware components while Agents are not cluster aware. Q. A. How do I uninstall CA ARCserve if the ARCserve in on cluster? To uninstall CA ARCserve on a cluster, follow the uninstallation steps specified in ARCserve Admin Guide.
