Simple, fast calibration and measurement procedures
The base system is the core of any measurement
configuration. It includes hardware and software, (except
the reference source) to measure stable sources from 2
MHz to 1.8 GHz.
Its modular architecture and hardware is ready for
future growth.
The MW phase detector or MW down-converter
options extend the base system frequency range to 18, 26
and up to 140 GHz.
Delay line and VCO down-converter options are available
for Free-run frequency sources.
The PN9000 Automated Phase Noise Measurement System is the
first system designed specifically to address the requirements of
Automatic Test Systems for laboratory, production and maintenance
purposes. Before the advent of the PN9000 system, phase noise
measurements were tedious, time consuming and difficult to set up.
Measurements of this type were therefore relegated to the laboratory
environment where specialists could “tweak” the instrumentation, fine
tune technique, and apply sophisticated mathematical tools to ensure the
precision and accuracy of the measurement.
Today’s advanced Communication and Radar Systems require the
utmost in spectral purity to achieve their performance goals. To ensure
that the performance of these advanced systems is not degraded due to
deficient signal sources, it has become essential that spectral purity
parameters such as phase noise and spurious content are measured for
quality verification of production units.
The PN9000 is ideally suited to such requirements because it is a
fully integrated system and has been designed specifically to facilitate
automated measurements. The PN9000 is a modular system which is
configurable to support a wide variety of applications, reference sources,
frequency coverage, and signal analysis requirements.
The PN9000 has been certified for accuracy and residual noise for
both AM and PM Noise by the National Institute of Standards and
Technology (NIST) in accordance with Calibration Report 813003.
The optimized RF and Microwave Mixers and Demodulators, as
well as built-in or external references, combined with low-noise VCXO
options, provide the versatility to measure the spectral purity of any kind
of RF or Microwave source, including Crystal Oscillators, Synthesizers,
VCO’s, DRO's, etc.
Theory of Operation
Automatic reference locking.
Spectrum Analysis from 0.01 Hz to 1 MHz (40 MHz
Optional) without an external spectrum analyzer.
Built-in frequency counter to measure RF, LO and IF
Beat signals.
The PN9000 demodulates the phase fluctuations of the
source under test by using a quadrature-locked low-noise
reference signal. A balanced mixer operates as a phase
comparator and produces a signal which comprises the time
representation of the phase fluctuations of the source. The
phase locked loop includes proportional and integral gain which
allows measurement on a frequency drifting source. All
necessary parameters are programmable and the system
automatically verifies that the parameters are self consistent.

The base PN9000 system includes a mainframe, five
modules, a PC computer, a GPIB interface, the digitizing board
and the software.
GPIB/RS-232 drivers for all commercial references

The PN9000’s modular architecture allows a wide choice of
options and customization.

If the DUT and the reference are identical devices such as
Crystal Oscillators, the actual phase noise of each device will
be 3 dB below the measured noise level.
For RF levels < +10 dBm, the noise is increased by the
difference. For example, if the noise with +10 dBm input is 170dBc, for +5 dBm input the system noise is:
(-170 dBc/Hz - 5dB = -165 dBc/Hz).
Typical values for standard phase detector with +10 dBm RF
and LO input and +20 dBm for high level: Spurious level
- 110 dBc.
The software permit automatic and fast phase detector
calibration, Tune slope measurement & Auto lock.
Data Management can be stored in direct memories access, in
the HD, on floppy disk or exported as ASCII files.

The residual phase noise of the Test Set itself is the lowest
phase noise the system can measure. It includes the noise of
