Visit to the Apartheid Museum
Johannesburg airport pick-up on Day 1 and transfer to hotel. On Day 2 take a cycling tour of
Soweto township to see Nelson Mandela's former home and neighbourhood. On Day 3 visit the
Apartheid Museum for an in-depth understanding of the country's history and then enjoy free time
in the afternoon. Take a Johannesburg hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus on Day 4 to visit the most
iconic spots in the city before returning to Soweto for dinner. Day 5 offers free time to explore
Soweto on your own. Your trip ends on Day 6 after checkout.
Day by Day Itinerary:
Day 1: Johannesburg Airport Pick-up
On arrival at Johannesburg Airport, you will meet with the driver at the Tourism Information Desk
in terminal A (International Arrivals) before being transferred to your accommodation in the
world-renowned township of Soweto. After check-in, get settled with a welcome drink! Overnight in
Day 2: Soweto Bicycle Tour (B/D)
After breakfast, take a two- or four-hour (optional extra) cycle tour of Soweto that will take you to
see some of the most interesting historical sites in the township. Some of the highlights include a
workers' hostel, Meadowlands, the site of the 1976 student uprising, the Hector Pieterson
Memorial, Nelson Mandela's former home and a local pub called a shebeen. If you choose the
four-hour tour, you will end it with a local lunch - "Kota" - a bread bun filled with delicious Soweto
chicken or veggie stew and a drink or two!
You can spend your afternoon at the community park, playing with the kids and engage in daily
activities in the Youth Club. After a hectic day relax around the accommodation dinner table and
enjoy a home-cooked meal. Warm up around the fireplace at night listening to African beats and
Day 3: Apartheid Museum (B)
After breakfast, you will be taken to the Apartheid Museum. The museum is the first of its kind and
illustrates the rise and fall of apartheid. It uses film, traditional exhibits and architecture to take you
through the epic saga of the country's history. For anyone wanting to understand and experience
what apartheid South Africa was really like, a visit to the Apartheid Museum is fundamental.
After spending time here you can go to Gold Reef City where you can learn about the
development of this city from the time gold was first discovered here. Or you can take the fun
option to go on some of the rides at the theme park or try your hand at some gambling at the
casino. Overnight in Soweto.
Day 4: Johannesburg Hop-On Hop-Off Tour (B/D)
After breakfast, our driver will shuttle you to Gold Reef City where you will hop onto the
Johannesburg city sightseeing bus and travel into the city centre where you can hop off at places
such as Newtown - Johannesburg's cultural precinct, Braamfontein with its hip student hangouts,
coffee shops and small eateries and Ghandi Square in the heart of the city. Travel up to the 51st
floor in Carlton Centre and take in this huge city at the ‘Top of Africa'. Continue to
Constitutional Hill, previously a prison for many of South Africa's anti-Apartheid activists. Today it
is the country's constitutional court representing democracy and justice. Arrive back at Gold Reef
City where the driver will pick you up and take you back to Soweto for a scrumptious dinner and
Day 5: Soweto Free Day (B)
After breakfast, the day can be spent at your own leisure. After spending some time in Soweto you
have now got to know how safe and relaxed this township is. Take a walk on your own, meet and
greet people. Play with the kids in the park and playground. Browse through the local souvenir
market and support Soweto's local traders. Have a lunch at Vilakazi Street - the only street in the
world to have housed two Nobel Peace prize winners - Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu.
Day 6: End of the Trip (B)
Enjoy breakfast, and after checking-out from your accommodation, this amazing experience will
come to an end. We wish you safe travels onwards.
