FAStT Storage Servers with EXP100
SATA disks build upon the highly
successful and widely established
base of FAStT Storage Servers.
They can be added to storage area
networks to satisfy the needs of
various fixed content, data reference
applications that require large
amounts of storage capacity but do
not have the high utilization and
access characteristics satisfied by
Fibre Channel disk drive storage.
Users will continue to have the
advantages of the FAStT Storage

Description
Statement of general direction
The IBM TotalStorage FAStT EXP100 Storage Expansion
Unit is designed to provide an economical storage
alternative for the FAStT900 and FAStT600 Storage
Servers to meet the large capacity needs of data
reference or fixed content types of applications. Using
the lower cost SATA disk drives for applications that do
not demand the performance and access intensity
typically addressed with Fibre Channel disk drives, the
EXP100 supports to up 14 FAStT 250 GB SATA disk drive
modules (#4602), offering up to 3.5 TB of capacity per
enclosure. The EXP100 includes two redundant power
supplies, enabling support for dual power source
configuration, and redundant cooling capabilities that are
hot swappable, allowing concurrent maintenance
operations. Each FAStT 250 GB SATA disk drive module
is dual-ported and attaches to the two Fibre Channel
loops of the FAStT Storage Servers, supporting continued
data access should a single cable connection fail.
It is IBM′s intention to enable the concurrent attachment
of both the FAStT EXP100 SATA disk drive enclosure and
the FAStT EXP700 Fibre Channel disk drive enclosure to
a FAStT900 or FAStT600 Storage Server.
All statements regarding IBM′s plans, directions, and
intent are subject to change or withdrawal without notice.

Compatibility: The IBM FAStT EXP100 Storage Expansion
Unit can be attached to either the FAStT600 or FAStT900
Storage Servers. At this time, when attaching EXP100s
to the FAStT Storage Servers, attachment of the EXP500
and EXP700 Expansion Units is not supported.
Security, auditability, and control
This product uses the security and auditability features
of the host hardware, host software, and application
software.
The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and
implementation of security features, administrative
procedures, and appropriate controls in application
systems and communications facilities.
Limitations: The FAStT EXP100 supports failover between
the two Fibre Channel attachments to the FAStT Storage
Server. The FAStT controller is designed to detect loss
of either cable connection, maintaining data access on the
surviving path to the EXP100 Storage Expansion unit. In
its initial release, the failover capabilities between the
redundant Enclosure Service Modules (ESMs) within the
EXP100 will not be fully supported. In the situation that
an ESM fails, the disk drives attached to the failing ESM
as primary will not be accessible. It is intended that full
ESM failover support will be available with a firmware
upgrade in the first quarter of 2004. Until this time it is
recommended that you follow the configuration guidelines
to minimize interruptions possible should an ESM fail.
