I. GENERAL
The Style "EL'' Receiving Amplifier was designed specifically for operation in the L. & N. R.R. Radnor Classification Yard cab signal system. This unit
consists essentially of four vacuum tubes, a discriminator coil, two filter coils,
a detachable master relay and the main plug-connector board. These are externally mounted on the top plate while all other circuit components such as
capacitors, rectifier, resistors, terminal strips and leads are attached to the
underside of the top plate and enclosed by a cover base. All units are protected
from dirt and moisture by the cover base or by separate individual enclosures.
Attached to the cover base is a hanple for withdrawing and carrying the unit,
the guide bars which engage those on the equipment box rack for proper alignment of the plug-connector boards, the name plate, the locking screw by which
the unit is drawn up and held tightly to the equipment box rack, and dowel pins
for positioning of the top plate. Each unit bears its own serial number stencilled
on the name plate.

The Types 300 and 5693 tubes are of the conventional "octal" base type in
which the aligning plug serves not only to index the base pins of the tube with the
contact springs in the socket but also to prevent the tube from working loose in
the socket as the result of vibration. To install a tube in its socket, insert the
end of the aligning plug in the central hole in the socket, then rotate the tube
until the key on the plug drops into the keyway in the socket hole, whereupon the
tube pins and socket springs will line up and the tube can be inserted the full distance into the socket. The master relay is of the plug-in type and can be quickly
and easily detached from the amplifier by removing two nuts· and sliding the relay
upward.
II. ASSEMBLY AND WIRING
The main plug-in terminal board has been assembled to the chassis in a
fixture and doweled in place in order to insure alignment of the plug-in sockets
on this board with the plugs on the equipment box rack terminal board. Since
the dowel holes on the board are accurately placed with relation to the mounting
screw holes and then used as a guide for drilling the dowel holes in the top plate,
all terminal boards should be interchangeable.
The top plate has likewise been assembled to the cover base in a fixture
and doweled ih place in order to insure proper alignment of plug-connectors. It
is not intended, however, that different top plates be used interchangeably with
any one cover base and for that reason the dowel holes in both members are
drilled in final assembly. This does not insure that all dowel pins have the
same position relative to the mounting screw holes. Therefore, should it ever
be necessary to replace a top plate or a cover base, redoweling will very likely
be necessary. If the top plate is a new one, new O. 189 inch holes must be drilled
in the top plate to fit the riveted stud already in the cover base. If the cover
base is a new one, new studs must be installed in the cover base to fit the existing holes in the top plate. If neither part is new, but not originally paired, it
will undoubtedly be necessary to remove the existing dowel studs and install
others at points distant from the old holes. In each case, the redoweling should
be done only after all 13 mounting screws have been tightened with the amplifier
plugged into the terminal board in the equipment box rack.
All wires except shielded leads are No. 18 B. & S. gauge flexible stranded
copper wire with extruded plastic insulation. These wires are used in eight
different colors for assistance in circuit checking.
III. DETAIL PARTS SPECIFICATIONS
1. Master Relay - The master relay is covered by a separate Instruction
Pamphlet (U-5663)
2. Tubes - The Type 300 tube, UM279300, is a beam-power tetrode designed
especially for 32-volt operation in Union cab signal amplifiers. Its quality as
an amplifier tube may be determined most effectively by a measurement of
"index" and "residual" on Tube Tester, UN231014. The index, as read on
this instrument, should not be less than 3. 5 ma. and the residual should not
exceed 1. 0 ma.
The Type 5693 tube, 01730133, a sharp cut-off pentode, is a ruggedized
version of the commercial Type 6SJ7 tube. This tube has been designed for a

10, 000-hour m1mmum life, with rigid construction, extreme uniformity and
exceptional stability. These tubes may be tested per instructions for the 6SJ7
tube on any commercial tube checker for proper operation.
IV.
MAINTENANCE
1. Mechanical Inspection - Each of the six looped wire plugs on the master
relay plug-connector board should<be checked for compression. This can be
done by engaging each individual plug with a mating socket, UM234455, to insure
that the wire loops have sufficient compression. Any plug on which the socket
fits loosely should have its spring wire loop spread by .means of a suitable tool
· until a snug fit is secured.
Carefully examine every part of the assembly to make certain that there
are no improperly soldered joints, untightened screws or nuts, damaged insulation or wires inadequately supported.
2. Electrical Inspection - The amplifier should be given a ground test by
measuring the resistance between each terminal on the main terminal board and
the case. The insulation resistance should be greater than 25 megohms
3. Operation Check - A Type 300 tube (UJ730082) having an index of approximately 4. 2 ma. should be inserted in the front right-hand tube socket, and
three Type 5693 tubes (UJ730133) that are known to be in good condition, in the
three sockets directly in front of the three filter units.
The operation of the Receiving Amplifier should be checked by placing it in
an equipment box rack that is in good operating condition on a locomotive. The
locomotive should be in a position such that the lateral distance between it and
the line wire carrying the 94. 5 KC carrier transmitted from the Hump Master's
Office is not greater than 300 feet. The control panel switch in the Hump Master's
Office should then be set to give the various signal indications called for in the
following tabulation. It should be noted that the master relay follows at the proper code speed and that the proper cab signal aspect is displayed.

If the master relay fails to operate during the time a signal is being transmitted to the line wire, the following suggestions may be helpful.
Replace the amplifier with another known to be in normal operating condition. If the second amplifier operates properly with the same tubes used to test
the first amplifier, then the trouble can be presumed to be in the amplifier itself, and not in the tubes or the circuits external to the amplifier.
Replace the master relay on the amplifier under test with one known to be in
good condition. If the relay does not operate properly, then the various voltage
measurements should be made in accordance with the procedure detailed below.
To check the operation of the Receiving Amplifier the following meters or

their equivalent are required:
Frequency Meter, General Radio Co. Model BC-221AA
Vacuum Tube Voltmeter, Hewlett-Packard Model 400C
Audio Oscillator, Hewlett-Packard Model 200C
Simpson Analyser, Model 260
Shielded leads should be used _on the audio oscillator and the vacuum tube
voltmeter. During the tuning process a check with the frequency meter of the
oscillator frequency should be made periodically to insure that the frequency does
not vary. All a-c. voltage readings should be made with the grounded terminal
of the voltmeter connected to common.
With a 32 volt d-c. supply connected to B32 and C, and the output of the audio oscillator to RC and C on the terminal board (see Figure 4), the frequency
should be set at 93. 5 KC. With a constant input voltage of 1. 5 millivolts a-c.,
voltage readings should be taken at the points marked on the Schematic Diagram,
Figure 3. The frequency should then be changed to 95. 5KC and the same series
of voltage readings taken. These voltage readings should agree within 10% with
the values shown in Paragraph VI under "Test Voltages". If these values do not
fall within the prescribed limits the three filter units should be retuned following the procedure as outlined in Paragraph V under "Tuning Procedure".
V. TUNING PROCEDURE
The same meters should be used during the tuning process as were described
in Paragraph IV under "Electrical Inspection".
1. Tuning of Band Pass Filters - In order to tune the two Band Pass Filters
(Tl and T2) it is necessary that a 2000-ohm load be substituted in place of the
primary winding of the discriminator coil. To do this, the shielded lead from
pin 8 on tube V3 to the discriminator coil (T3) should be disconnected at the tube
socket. . A 2000-ohm resistor should then be connected between pin 8 on tube
V3 and the B32 bus bar.
With a 32-volt d-c. supply connected to B32 and C, and the output of the
audio oscillator to RC and C on the terminal board (see Figure 4), the frequency
should be set at 94. 5 KC at a constant input of 0. 8 millivolts a-c.
A 250 mmf capacitor, UJ700604, should be connected across each winding
on filter units Tl and T2. With a 20, 000-ohm resistor across the secondary
winding of filter unit Tl (pin 4 of tube V2 to common bus), the primary winding
of filter Tl should be tuned. Tuning is obtained by adding one or more of the
following capacitors across the primary winding of filter Tl until· the a-c.
voltage, E6, measured at the points shown on Schematic Diagram, Figure 3,
is a maximum.

The 20, 000-ohm resistor should then be connected across the primary
winding of filter Tl so that the secondary winding can be tuned for a maximum
a-c. output (E6) in the same manner.
Filter unit T2 should then be tuned using the procedure as outlined above so
that all four filter coil windings are tuned for a maximum output voltage at E6.
After the four windings of the two filters have been tuned and with the cans
in place on both filters, a test curve should be taken by holding the input voltage
constant at 0. 8 milli-volt, varying the frequency, and reading the output voltage
(E6). This curve should be compared to the curve shown on Fig. 1, to check
that the curve limits are within the specifications. If the test curve is not within
the specified limits, the two filter units should be retuned and a new test curve
taken for comparison with the standard curve.
2. Tuning of Discriminator Coil - Before tuning the discriminator coil (T3),
the 2000-ohm resistor between pin 8 on tube V3 and the B32 bus should be removed and the shielded lead replaced on pin 8 of tube V3.
With the audio oscillator set at 1. 5 milli-volts at 96 KC, and the d-c. voltmeter across resistor R4, the primary winding should be tuned by adding one or
more of the silver-mica capacitors referred to in "Tuning of Band-Pass Filter".
The discriminator primary is tuned for a peak d-c. voltage across resistor R4.
When tuning has been completed, the can should be put into place over the filter
and a curve taken of frequency versus d-c. volts at a constant input voltage of
1. 5 milli-volts. The curve obtained should fall within the limits indicated on
curve Fig. 2.
