InBasketisEpic'scommunicationhub,whereyoucansendandreceivemessagesandworkthroughtasks.You
canquicklycompleteyourtasksbymarkingamessageasDoneorReviewed,orbyfollowingupinotherways.
InBasketmessagescanbesentbothtoindividualrecipientsandtogroupsofrecipients.Somemessagesare
automaticallysenttoyourInBasketwhencertaineventsoccur.Forexample,youmightreceiveanInBasket
messagewhentheresultsofalabtestcomebackorwhensomeoneplacesanorderthatrequiresyour
cosignature.

Sort your messages

inadifferentordertomatchyourpreferences.
Youcanalsosortbymorethanonecolumn.Forexample,tomakesureyouseetheoldesthigh-priority

Refresh In Basket
WhenInBasketrefreshes,Epicchecksfornewmessages,removesanymessagesthatyouhavemarkedas
Done,andremovesanyfoldersthatnolongercontainanymessages.
InBasketautomaticallyrefreshesatregularintervalswhileyou'recompletingyourworkandeachtimeyou
opentheactivity.TorefreshyourInBasketmanually,click RefreshontheInBaskettoolbar.

Send messages to staff
MostofyourtimespentinInBasketinvolvesworkingwithmessagesyoureceive,butsometimesyou'llneed
tosendanewmessage.Forinstance,youmightsendamessagewhenyouneedtorelayaphonemessage,
havesomeonecallapatient,orjustaskacolleagueaquestion.
1. FromInBasket,click NewMsgtocreateaStaffMessage.StaffMessagesarecommonlyusedto
conveynon-patient-relatedinformation.

YoucanalsoclickthearrowontheNewMsgbuttonandselectdifferentmessagetypes,including
morespecificpatient-focusedmessagessuchasPatientCallBack.
2. OntheMessagetab,enterrecipientsintheTofield.UsetheformatLastname,Firstname.Recipients
youoftenuseappearasyoubegintypingtheirnames.

Whenenteringmorethanonerecipient,separateeachnameusingasemicolon.
Completion matching is a fast way to locate recipients. For example, enter "smi,ale" to
locate Alexander Smith. You can still use completion matching if you're entering
multiple recipients. For example, entering "smi,ale;hat,jea" adds both Alexander Smith
and Jean Hathaway to your recipients list.
3. Optionally,designateaprioritylevelforthemessagebyselectingoneofthepriorityoptions,suchas
HighorLow.Thisletsrecipientsknow,ataglance,ifyourmessageneedsimmediateattention.
4. Completeoreditanyotherfields,dependingonthetypeofmessageyouaresending.
5. EnteryourmessageintheNotesfield.
6. Addflagstoyourmessage,ifappropriate.Flags,suchas"Callpatient"or"Schedulefollow-up
appointment,"quicklyalertrecipientstoimportantinformationaboutyourmessage.
7. ClickAccepttosendthemessagetotherecipient,orclickCanceltodiscardthemessage.
To send the message at a later date, access the Options tab. In Basket enters today's
date as the date on which this message should be sent, but you can enter a future date
if desired. For example, you might send a message to be delivered to your support staff
one month from now reminding them to contact a patient to see how well the new
medication you prescribed is working for him. You can also enter an expiration date, if
applicable. After a message has expired, it is removed from any recipients' In Baskets.

What is an In Basket pool?
Apoolisagroupofpeoplewhoallreceiveasinglemessagethatrequiresactionfromanyonepersoninthe
group.WhenonepersoninthepoolcompletesthetaskandmarksthemessageasDone,themessage
disappearsfromallotherpoolmembers'InBaskets.
Youmight,forexample,sendamessagetothesupportstaffpoolforyourdepartmentifyouneedasupport
staffmembertocallapatienttwohoursaftershereceivesaninjection.

What is an In Basket class?

messagecausesthemessagetodisappearfromothers'InBaskets,actiononeclassmemberactingona
messageaffectsonlythatuser'scopyofthemessage.Useclassestoquicklysendaninformationalmessageto
aspecificgroupofpeopleandensurethateachmemberofthegroupreceivesit.
Youmight,forexample,sendamessagetothepediatricphysicianclasstoinformyourcolleaguesofanew
articleyoureadonpediatricdosingofTylenol.

Send secure messages to patients through MyChart
YoucancommunicateinstructionsorotherinformationorsendquestionnairestoMyChart-activepatients
directlyfromyourInBasket.Messagesyousend,aswellaspatientresponsestohistoryquestionnaires,are
filedtothepatient'schart.
This section discusses sending questionnaires and general messages to patients, but you
can also use In Basket to release test results to MyChart-active patients. Refer to p. 19
for more information on sending patients messages about test results.
1. Click PatientMsgonyourInBaskettoolbar.ThePatientLookupwindowopens.
2. Ifyourpatient'schartiscurrentlyopen,selecthernamefromtheOpenPatientslist.Ifnot,searchfor
yourpatientasyounormallywouldandclickAccept.
3. InthePatientMessageactivity,enterasubjectintheSubjectfield.
4. EnteryourmessageintheMessagefield.ThisfieldisSmartTool-enabled,soyoucanuseSmartTexts,
SmartPhrases,andSmartLinkstosavetime.
5. ToreceiveanInBasketmessageifyourpatientdoesnotreadyourmessagebyacertaindate,select
theNotifymeifnotreadbycheckboxandspecifyadate.
6. Todeliveryourmessageonalaterdate,enteritintheDelivertopatientonfield.Ifnodateisentered,
yourmessagewillbedeliveredthedayyousendit.
7. Toattachaquestionnaire,click AddQuestionnaire.IntheQuestionnaireDetailswindow,searchfor
theappropriatequestionnaireandenterapatient-friendlydisplayname.ThenclickAccept.
To see what the questionnaire will look like for the patient, click Show Preview.
8. Toattachahistoryquestionnaire,click AddHxQtnr.Searchfortheappropriatequestionnaire,
enterapatient-friendlydisplayname,andclickAccept.

To remove an attached questionnaire or history questionnaire from your message,
right-click the

Remove a message from your In Basket
Whenyou'refinishedwithamessage,click Done.ThenexttimeInBasketrefreshes(whichhappensevery
fewminutes),themessageisremoved.WhenyoumarkallofthemessagesinafolderasDone,thefolder
disappearsuntilyoureceiveanothermessageofthattype.
SomeInBasketmessagesareassociatedwithtasksthatyouneedtocompletebeforetheycanbemarkedas
Done.Forexample,youcan'tremoveMyOpenChartsmessagesfromyourInBasketuntilyouhaveclosedthe
associatedencounters.Often,thosetypesofmessagedon'thaveaDonebutton.Instead,completingthe
appropriatetaskremovesthemessagefromyourInBasket.
Many messages include a Help report that explains what task you need to complete to
remove the message. Refer to p. 5 for more information on the Help report.
I accidentally marked a message as Done. Can I undo it?
Yes.IfyourInBaskethasn'trefreshedyet,right-clickthemessageandselectastatus(forexample,New)toset
themessagetothatstatus.
Ifthemessageisalreadygone,click Searchandselectthe MyMessagesMarked"Done"searchfrom
thePublicfolderontheleftsideofthewindow.Ifnecessary,adjustthesearchcriteriatofindonlycertain
messagesormessagesfromaspecifictimeframe,forexample.ThenclickSearch.Resultsreturnedbythe
searchareorganizedbyfolder.Right-clickamessagetochangeitsstatus.

Allow colleagues to cover for you when you're unavailable
InsteadoflettingyourworkaccumulateinyourInBasketwhileyou'reawayfromtheoffice,youcanusethe
OutofContactactivitytoensurethatyourmosturgentmessagesarefolloweduponinatimelymanner.For
example,ifoneofyourpatientshasabnormalresultsthatneedtobereviewedimmediatelywhileyouare
out,anotherdesignatedcliniciancanaccessyourInBasket,reviewtheresults,andtaketheappropriate
follow-upactions.
Tosetupthisfeature:

Create personal distribution lists for In Basket messages
Ifyoufrequentlyroutenotes,results,letters,oraddendatothesamesetofpeople,youcansavethe
recipientsindistributionlistscalledMyLists.Forexample,youcancreatearesultsMyListthatincludesoneof
yourcolleaguesandthenursesinyourdepartment.YourlettersMyListcouldincludethesupportstaffwho
editandsendyourletters.WhenusingaMyList,youcanaddsomeorallofitsrecipientstoyourmessagein
justafewclicks.
