14000—BAROID MUD BALANCE
14300—BAROID MUD DEAERATOR
The Baroid Mud Balance provides a simple method for the
accurate determination of mud density. An outstanding
advantage of this balance is the fact that the temperature
of the drilling mud does not materially affect the accuracy
of readings. The durable construction of the Baroid Mud
Balance makes it ideal for field use. Despite its sensitivity,
it contains no easily breakable parts.
Principally, the balance consists of a base and graduated arm with cup, lid, knife edge, rider, built-in spirit level,
and counter-weight. The constant volume cup is affixed to
one end of the graduate arm and the counter-weight on
the opposite end.
A plastic carrying case is provided that holds the balance intact and in working position.
The Baroid Mud Deaerator aids in getting accurate drilling
fluid density measurements by removing air and other
gases from the fluid sample.
A stainless steel paddle agitates the sample while a
hand-operated vacuum pump draws off the excess air and
gas. This tool is extremely useful in gas-cut situations.

For engineers requiring maximum portability and small
size, the Baroid pocket size mud balance is recommended. The scale reads from 5.8 to 17 Ib/gal and can be
extended to 15.8 to 27 Ib/gal by use of weight extension

plastic for corrosion protection and long life. Numbers
and other markings stay sharp and easy to read even with
rough use.

The Baroid Marsh Funnel Viscometer is made of rugged,
break-resistant plastic that resists temperature change
deformation. Volumetric accuracy is assured. Plastic
provides insulation for user's hands. A metal orifice
assures accurate readings. The Marsh Funnel is used for
routine viscosity determinations on almost every drilling
rig.
BAROID STOPWATCHES AND TIMERS
The Baroid Stopwatch is recommended for use with the
Marsh Funnel. It has a 60-second dial with 1/5-second
division and a 30-minute register. Start, stop, and fly-back
are operated by pressure on the stem.

BAROID MEASURING CUPS
The 1,000-cc high-impact plastic measuring cup, graduated in cubic centimeters and fluid ounces, is designed
specifically for use with Marsh Funnel Viscometer measurements and with the Baroid Clip-Type Mud Mixer. Lines
are molded in at 350 ml and at one quart (32 fl oz) to aid in
these tests.
Stainless Steel Measuring Cups, graduated in cubic
centimeters and fluid ounces, are available where other
measurements are needed.

28600—BAROID VARIABLE-SPEED
ELECTRONIC RHEOMETER
The Baroid Variable-Speed Electronic Rheometer is a
precision rotational viscometer built for convenient field
testing of the Theological properties of drilling fluids.
Speeds can be selected in one of two modes. The variable mode allows continuous speeds from 3 to 600 rpm,
while the second mode offers settings at conventionally
used speeds of 100,200, 300,600 rpm and gel strength (3
rpm). Closed loop speed control allows accurate testing of
shear thinning fluids, because the speed remains locked
in to the desired speed throughout testing. The rpm
readout resolution is 1 rpm on a digital display; the indicator dial is read through a cover-mounted magnifier and
uses a conventional torsion spring.
The unit can be powered by a 12-volt DC circuit or 115
or 230 volts AC, 50-60 Hz. Normal drilling rig-voltage and
frequency variations do not affect the rheometer.
A cantilever frame supports this instrument and allows
tilting for sample cup cleaning and changes. The plastic
viscosity and yield point of the fluid being tested can be
obtained by plotting a graph.
The rheometer, complete with cup and cables, weighs
less than 12 pounds.

28000—BAROID RHEOMETER
The Baroid Rheometer is a precision-built, multiple-speed
rotational viscometer designed specifically for field
testing the Theological properties of drilling fluids. The
Baroid Rheometer is operated at two rotational shear
rates, and the readings obtained are used to determine
the plastic viscosity and yield point of the drilling fluid
being tested.
The Baroid Rheometer is hand-powered by turning a
small crank that drives a rotor at a preselected constant
speed through a precision gear train governor. Rotor
speeds of either 300 or 600 rpm are obtained by setting
the position of the speed control lever. A third position of
the speed control lever is available for operating the rotor
at a higher speed for stirring the drilling fluid sample.
Gel-strength measurements are read directly from the
deflection scale. When making gel-strength measurements, force is applied manually by turning the gel knob
and observing the maximum reading on the deflection
scale before the gel breaks.
The Baroid Rheometer is supported on a counterbalanced telescoping frame that provides easy adjustment of the rotor depth of the drilling fluid sample. No
electrical power of any kind is used for operation. No field
maintenance is required. It is the lightest field instrument
available for determining plastic viscosity and yield point.

This kit is used for conveniently field checking the calibration of the Baroid Rheometer or any other Theological
instrument. The kit contains certified-viscosity standard
fluids in containers labeled with certification-standard

the physical data of these standards are traceable to the
National Bureau of Standards.

28200—CAPILLARY VISCOMETER
The Baroid Capillary Viscometer is a laboratory quality
extrusion viscometer capable of measuring shear stress
over a wide range of shear rates. Most drilling fluids are
subject to shear rates from 1 to 10 sec'1 in the pit to over
10,000 sec'1 at the bit. The Capillary Viscometer, with a
range of from 10 to 100,000 sec'1, is a valuable rheological tool for measuring shear stress between these
extreme limits.
The Baroid Capillary Viscometer operates by means of
a pressurized mud chamber which expels the mud
through a capillary tube. The pressure drop plus the flow
rate produced by the pressure differential provide the
necessary raw data for determining rheological values.
Three tubes are included for full range operation.
A maximum mud temperature of 300°F is thermostatically controlled in a 1,000-cc reservoir. Precision pressure
gauges measure the pressure drop of fluid flow through
the capillary tube. A maximum pressure differential of 375
psi is established by design of the instrument. Maximum
value and proper tube size selection allow for definition of
the type of flow, eliminating errors due to turbulent flow.

FANN Direct Indicating Viscometers Simplify and Quicken Scale Readings
FANN SERIES 35 VISCOMETERS
Series 35 Viscometers are versatile instruments for
research or production use. They can be used wherever a
regulated-frequency power source is available.
In the six-speed models, test speeds of 600, 300,200,
100,6 and 3 rpm are available via synchronous motor
driving through precision gearing. Any test speed can be
selected without stopping rotation. The shear stress is
displayed continuously on the calibrated scale, so that
time-dependent viscosity characteristics can be observed
as a function of time. The Model 35A is powered by a 60Hz motor; Model 35SA by a 50-Hz motor.
Twelve total test speeds let you measure over an
extended shear-rate range. Test speeds of 600, 300,200,
180,100, 90,60, 30,6, 3,1.8 and 0.9 rpm are available via
a synchronous motor driving through an SR12 gear box
and then through the precision gearing, as defined for
Model 35. The additional 10:3 speed reduction is selectable through a two-position gear-shift lever. Standard R1
rotor sleeve, B1 bob and F1 torsion spring and stainless
steel sample cup are included. The SR12 gear box can be
retrofitted to Series 35 Viscometers.

FANN SERIES 34 VISCOMETERS
Series 34 models feature two test speeds for viscosity,
600 and 300 rpm. They also have a neutral position for the
determination of thixotropic gelation on oil well drilling
fluids according to established API procedures. These
instruments combine accuracy with simplicity of design,
and particularly are recommended for evaluating materials that are Bingham plastics. They now have applications in other fields. The Model 34A is driven by a 12-volt
AC/DC motor and has a provision for stirring the sample at
high speed (not a test speed). Model HC34A is handcranked, and test speeds are controlled by a patented
governor design. Shear stress is read directly from a calibrated scale. Plastic viscosity and yield point of a fluid can
be determined easily by making two simple subtractions
from the observed data when the instrument is used with
R1-B1 combination and the standard F1 torsion spring
(details for drilling fluids in American Petroleum Institute
Specification RP 13B). Other rotor-bob combinations and/
or torsion springs can be used. R1 rotor sleeve, B1 bob,
F1 torsion spring and stainless steel sample cup are
standard. Carrying case, step-down transformers and
other accessories are available.

ROTOR-BOB COMBINATIONS
Various bobs normally are used with the standard R1
rotor; various rotors normally are used with the standard
B1 bob. Selection should be made on the basis of the
shear gap, which dictates both the shear-rate range and
the maximum particle size of any solid species. The
shear-stress range and, hence, the viscosity range of
measurement can be adjusted according to the selection
of the torsion spring.
ROTORS
The outer cylinder normally supplied with the FANN Direct
Indicating Viscometer, the R1 rotor sleeve, has an open
bottom and chrome-plated brass construction. It also is
available in a 303 stainless steel construction and in a
closed-end, rotor-cup configuration. Three versions of the
R2 rotor are available for smaller gaps, higher shear
rates. An open-end R3 rotor is available in two configurations, for a larger shear gap. Special rotors also can be
engineered to meet your special test requirements.

TORSION SPRING ASSEMBLIES
Torsion springs are readily interchanged on all models of
FANN Direct Indicating Viscometers. Instruments normally are supplied with the F1 torsion spring, which has a
spring constant of 386-dyne-cm/degree deflection and
provides a full-scale shear-stress capability of 1,533
dynes/cm2 at 300 degrees deflection with the B1 bob.
Other torsion spring assemblies are designed to be integral multipliers of the standard spring and can be used to
increase or decrease the shear-stress range and, hence,
the viscosity range of the instrument. Precision drawn and
tempered beryllium-copper wire assures the precision
and linearity and a long service life for these torsion
springs, even under adverse environments.

BOBS
The inner cylinder normally supplied, the B1 bob, is the
standard for drilling fluids and cements and handles other
applications as well. This bob is 303 stainless steel
for good wear resistance and is hollow for neutral buoyancy, low rotational inertia and fast response in typical
test fluids. Recommended maximum-use temperature is
200°F (93°C). Three additional bobs are available and
normally are used with the R1 family of rotors. Special
bobs also can be engineered to meet your special test
requirements.

FANN Model 39B Recording Rheometer: Engineered to Give You Accurate
Characterization of Flow Behavior.
This Couette-type coaxial cylinder rheometer is
designed by Baroid for the rheological characterization of all types of shear-rate-dependent and timedependent fluids in cgs units (centipoise) or SI units
(Pascal-seconds). Data outputs of shear stress and
shear rate are recorded on an XY recorder. Other
recorder options are available. The temperature of the
sample can be measured with a thermocouple located
in the tip of the bob shaft.
Fixed rotor speeds and linear-speed programs to
600 rpm are possible. The Thermobath accessory
allows sample temperatures to 220°F (105°C).

FANN Model 5STDL Consistometer:
A Multi-Use Telescopic Shear Viscometer.
This is a high-pressure, high-temperature instrument in
which the test fluid is subjected to telescopic shear. It
originally was designed for the oil industry and is particularly useful in determining the flow properties of
drilling mud, cements and fracturing fluids under downhole conditions. The upper operating limits of the
5STDL are 20,000 psi and 500°F (260°C).
The test fluid is sheared in the annular space
between two coaxial cylinders, the outer cylinder forming the sample container and the moving bob being
the inner member. Axial movement of the iron bob is
caused by two alternately energized electromagnets
positioned at the ends of the sample cavity. Bob movement is proportional to the viscosity of the test fluid.
The consistency, or relative viscosity, of the test fluid is
obtained by electrically timing the movement of the
steel bob in the heated and pressurized sample container. Sample temperature is measured in the test
zone.
A constant force is imposed on the bob by electromagnets, through the proper selection of current.
Pressure is recorded on a 6-inch-diameter dial gauge.
Data outputs of consistency (relative bob travel time)
and sample temperature can be recorded on a dualpen strip chart recorder. Available for 115-volt or 230volt operation.

A General Purpose Instrument with High-Pressure Capability.
Baroid's FANN 50C Recording High-Temperature
Rheometer is a rotational-type viscometer that tests
sample fluids to 500°F (260°C) in a pressurized coaxial
cylinder chamber. Heat can be programmed or controlled manually. Dual pressure system capability now
is standard on all models. The test sample can be
pressurized to 1,000 psi (7,000 kPa) with either a
hydraulic liquid or with bottled gas, such as nitrogen.
Apparent viscosities at various rates of shear, timedependent properties, change caused by continued
shearing and temperature effects are determined
quickly and accurately. The Model 50C is ideal for general rheology characterization, including determining
the high temperature stability of drilling fluids.
Shear-stress output, rotor speed and bath temperature are displayed on a digital meter and/or simultaneously recorded. Data outputs readily are converted to
the U.S. customary system, or to cgs or SI metric systems. Shear stress with the standard spring provides
4,000 dynes/cm2, full scale, in five selectable ranges
down to 200 dynes/cm2. Shear rate is 0 to 1,024 sec 1
with the standard rotor and bob. Other torsion springs
or bobs are available.
Automatic test parameters can be set before test
begins. At a touch of a button, the rotor accelerates to
the preset speed at the rate selected. Upon reaching
this point, deceleration is initiated, returning rotor rpm
to zero at the controlled rate.
The dual-pen strip chart recorder (included) operates in time-base mode or as a function of speed program. Records shear stress, shear rate and sample
temperature. Other recorder options are available for
115-volt or 230-volt power.

CORROSION RESISTANCE
The following components have been used for testing
acidizing/fracturing fluids in the oil industry and they
are recommended whenever the need for high level of
corrosion resistance is dictated by the nature of the
test fluid. We recommend that all four components,
namely rotor cup, bob, bob shaft and expansion fitting,
all be substituted as a unit in order to ensure the maximum protection to the Model 50 Rheometer.

The Digital Control Option is an on-board computer which
replaces the standard Model 50C control panel. The unit
contains a 5-inch screen which displays Viscosity, Shear
Stress, Shear Rate, Bath Temperature, Sample Temperature, and Pressure on a real-time basis. It allows for the
programming and storing of up to 99 test sequences, and
each sequence can consist of up to 999 separate steps of
changes in shear rate or temperature. The unit also allows
the selection of the way in which the data is taken, as a
function of changes in time, shear rate (rpm), shear
stress, or sample temperature. The unit contains an
internal 20 Mbyte hard disk for data storage of not only the
test results but also the test sequences. The system has
options for printing and plotting data in real time or storing
for retrieval and analysis later. The system allows the
selection of one of three measurement systems that can
be changed at the touch of a key.

The Baroid Lab Model Digital pH Meter is a high-quality,

API FILTRATION TESTING EQUIPMENT
The Baroid Low Pressure Filter Press is the most
effective means of determining the filtration properties
of drilling muds and cement slurries. All Baroid API
Filter Press Assemblies consist of a mud reservoir
mounted in a frame, a pressure source, a filtering
medium and a graduated cylinder for receiving and
measuring filtrate.
Baroid has available the No. 32801, 28 x 500 mesh
stainless steel filter cloth screen and the No. 32802,
325 mesh with 60 mesh back-up stainless steel
screen for use in testing cement slurries as recommended in API Code RP 10B.
The Baroid Filter Press units are constructed of
anodized aluminum, stainless steel and chrome plated
brass. Working pressure is 100 psi and the filtering
area is 7.1-in2.
The Dead-Weight Hydraulic Assembly No. 33500
provides a source of constant hydraulic pressure in
one compact unit. It consists of a water reservoir, piston and cylinder, dead weight, delivery pressure
gauge, two check valves and a bleed off valve. When
attached to a standard No. 30000 Baroid Filter Press it
delivers 100 psi pressure to the filter cell as prescribed
in API Code RP 13B.
A compact version of the standard Baroid Filter
Press is also available. The No. 30205 employs onehalf size filtration area. Time and pressure requirements are the same as for large units. Readings are
converted to standard measure by multiplying by two.

BAROID HIGH-PRESSURE HIGH-TEMPERATURE FILTER PRESSES FOR
TESTING FILTRATION PROPERTIES OF DRILLING MUD, CEMENT SLURRIES,
FRACTURING FLUIDS
For temperature control on all HPHT Filter Presses,
the cell sits in a thermostated aluminum well for heating and filtration. The heating chamber completely
encloses the filtering area, assuring filtration at the
desired temperature. Power consumption of the standard size (175-ml) unit is only 400-watts. The 500-ml
filter press requires 800-watts.
The standard cell of these filter presses is made of
stainless steel. The cells have valves at top and bottom so that they can be closed in for heat-up and cooldown. This design also makes it possible to use the
cell for aging and agitation in the Baroid Roller Oven
before filtration properties of the same are determined.
The smaller units operate up
to 350°F. The larger units
can be operated up to
slightly above SOOT. For
operation above 400°F, the
paper filter should be
backed up with a glass fiber
filter, No. N8802, or stainless steel filter, No. N8804.
High-Pressure, High-Temperature (HPHT) Filter
Presses are an efficient means of evaluating the filtration properties of drilling muds at high temperature
and pressures. The cells have a filtering area of 3.5 in2
and can be operated at pressures up to 900 psi with
the compact, easily attached CO2 pressuring unit provided. Standard nitrogen manifolds are available for
operating to higher pressures as required, 1200 psi on
the cell and 750 psi on the receiver, with the No.
38411 regulator, or to bottle pressure with special regulators. These units may be operated up to 200°F
using a graduated cylinder to collect filtrate. However,
for temperatures above 200°F the appropriate backpressure receiver must be used to prevent evaporation of the filtrate. The standard 38720 Back Pressure
Receiver has a separate
CO2 pressuring source
and back pressures
up to 150 psi can
be placed on the
receiver to obtain
the desired differential across
the filtration area.
If an ion analysis is to
be made of the filtrate, nitrogen
should be used for the back pressure. The nitrogen manifolds are
provided with safety relief valves.

APPARATUS
The FANN High Temperature-High Pressure Filter
Press has been developed for evaluating the filtration
properties of drilling fluids at elevated temperatures
and pressures. Filtration tests are usually conducted at
a sample temperature of 300°F (149°C) and 50 psi
(3450 kPa) differential pressures with the standard
CO2 pressuring unit. Filtering area of the test cell is a
standard 3.55 square inches (22.9 cm2). When testing
above 200°F (93°C) the back pressure receiver
assembly is attached to the filtrate outlet to prevent
evaporation of the filtrate. Back pressures up to 150
psi (1035 kPa) can be provided through the receiver by
the assembly's own pressure source. A safety pop-off
valve releases receiver pressure if it should exceed
160psi(1100kPa).
The Permeability Plugging Apparatus (PPA) is
designed to provide accurate simulation and measurement of downhole static filtration. The PPA is very useful in predicting how a drilling fluid can form a
permeable filter cake to seal off depleted/under pressure intervals. The PPA utilizes a conventional HTHP
Heating Jacket to simulate reservoir temperature. The
fluid cell is inverted with pressure applied from the bottom of the cell and filtrate collected out the top.
Pressure is transferred to the mud by a small hydraulic
hand pump through a small floating piston within the
cell. The PPA employs an aluminum oxide (aloxite)
filter disk, which is available in varying porosities. This
disk offers a more authentic representation of the
actual filter cake which develops on the wall of the
formation.

The FANN Model 90 Dynamic Filtration System is the
industry's first truly dynamic filtration system for conducting filter cake formation and permeability analysis
for drilling fluids optimization. The Model 90 can be
heated and pressurized to provide the closest possible
simulation of downhole conditions. The filter medium is
a thick-walled cylinder with rock-like characteristics to
simulate the build-up of filter cake on the formation.
The filter medium is available in varying porosities and
permeabilities. Filtration occurs radially from the inside
of the filter core to the outside. At the same time, the
filter cake is formed on the inside of the filter core to
simulate filter cake formation on the wall of a borehole.
A polished stainless steel shear bob runs through the
central axis of the filter core. The shear bob is rotated
to produce a concentric cylinder-type shear across the
filtration surface. The Model 90 is fully automatic with a
built-in computer controller. Through menu-driven software, the user can establish up to 20 sequence steps
to program the following testing parameters: .
• Temperature
• Pressure
• Differential pressure
• Shear rate.
The LCD display allows monitoring of real-time test
results, which are printed for further analysis and filing

MODEL 391, BRIDGING MATERIALS TESTER
The ability of a material to seal a lost circulation zone is
important in the determination of the proper material to
use. The Baroid Bridging Materials Tester is designed to
aid in the evaluation of materials used for regaining circulation.
The Bridging Materials Tester effectively simulates
various formations by using a series of slotted discs,
screens, B.B. shot or marble beads. Fluid containing lost
circulation materials is applied under 1,000 psig pressure
to this simulated formation. The efficiency of the seal
formed and the volume of fluid lost before a seal is formed

The Baroid Differential Sticking Tester Apparatus was
designed to determine "Stuck Pipe Tendency" and
effectiveness of spotting fluids in any given drilling
fluid. The Stuck Pipe Tendency Coefficient is read
directly at the conclusion of the test. By measuring the
area of caking during a test, a bulk sticking coefficient
is obtained; and by using a yoke accessory, the sticking coefficient of a controlled cake thickness can be
measured. The question of how likely a given fluid will
produce a "stuck" situation and the effectiveness of a
given treatment can be investigated onsite.
The unit is pressurized by the CO2 assembly or any
nitrogen source. The standard test uses 477 psi differential pressure applied to a stainless steel vessel of
approximately 140 ml capacity. Measurements can be
made on either a flat-faced torque plate or a plate of
12-1/2" radius. (Both are provided.) In the event of a
"sticky" sample that tends to adhere more to the plate
than to the filter paper, stainless steel micro-corrugation disks are provided, along with extra-strength

The FANN Model 23D Electrical Stability Tester is an
accurate, compact and portable instrument which measures the relative electrical strength of emulsions having

Retorts for Liquid and Solid Analysis
A retort, sometimes also known as a still, is used to determine the quantity of liquids and solids in a drilling fluid. A
carefully measured sample of mud is placed in a retort
cup and heated until the liquid components have been
vaporized. The vapors are passed through a condenser
and collected in a graduated cylinder or centrifuge tube
which has been calibrated "TC" to contain the condensed
liquids at 20°C. The distillate is read directly as volume
percent of the prescribed sample volume. The solids, both
suspended plus dissolved, are determined by subtraction
from 100 percent of the initial sample. For fresh-water
muds, the relative amounts of barite and clay can be estimated. Corrections must be made for salt in the calculation for solids content.

The Baroid Oil and Water Retort Kit affords a simple,
direct field method of determining the percent by volume
of oil and water in samples in drilling mud or in core samples of the formation. The kit has been found to be especially useful in determining the oil content of emulsion
muds.
The Baroid Oil and Water Retort Kit provides faster
retorting without danger of overheating with consequent
damage to the heater unit. This has been accomplished
by adding a thermostat to control a higher wattage
heating unit. By this method the retort automatically cuts
off when distillation is complete, regardless of the supply
voltage. Distillation time on normal voltages (110-120
volts) is about 15 minutes. The retort is enclosed in a
stainless steel carrying case for greater portability.

BAROID LABORATORY ROLLER OVENS
Just which compounds are responsible for scale build-up
in drilling fluids must be determined before an effective
chemical treating program can be implemented to control
the scale. The Baroid Calcimeters can determine if the
scale build-up is composed of calcium carbonate, quickly
and with a high degree of accuracy.
Both models of the Calcimeter are suited to a differential measure of the calcite to dolomite content of the
unknown sample. The main difference in the two models
lies in the fact that an operator must be present during the
test with No. 43200 (Pressure Gauge Model) to record
readings at regular intervals. No. 43210 records its results
on a strip chart, leaving the operator free to perform other
duties. In both models, the calcite contents are available
in a matter of seconds and the dolomites can be determined in 15-20 minutes.
In the investigation of performance characteristics of
drilling muds and the evaluation of drilling mud additives it
is highly desirable to simulate well conditions as closely
as possible. Baroid Roller Ovens provide an excellent
method of simulating circulating conditions. Mud samples
are placed in glass jars, No. 76000 High-Temperature
Aging Cells or the cells of No. 38700 High-Pressure, HighTemperature Filter Presses. These are placed in the roller
oven, where they are subjected to moderate heat and
agitation on power-driven rollers. This equipment is particularly useful in investigating muds where base exchange
reaction is of importance (such as lime-treated muds), or
in studying the stability of additives (such as thinners and
organic colloids).
Baroid Roller Ovens are well-insulated units designed
for convenient use in the field or in the laboratory. These
units can be designed to operate on 115-volt AC or DC
or 230-volt AC. A thermostat permits control of temperatures between 100° and 425°F. Attention has been

Baroid High-Temperature Aging Cells are designed for
field-testing muds at temperatures as high as 425°F.
Baroid High-Temperature Aging Cells are available
in 260 ml and 500 ml sizes to hold a sufficient volume
of mud to allow testing after aging. The 500 ml cells are
provided for greater volumes of mud to be tested at
higher temperatures with sufficient space for expansion
as a safety factor. The cell is compact and lightweight.
Some cells include a valve and pressure connection for
prepressuring the cell before heating. This connection
to the pressure source is made in the same manner as
that used on the HPHT filter presses so that standard
nitrogen or CO2 manifolds can be used for this purpose.

The brine test kit is a portable, chemical test kit for
measuring the calcium chloride, calcium bromide and
zinc bromide content of brines. Expensive, multiple
salt brines may now be accurately analyzed at the
stockpoint or at the wellsite with this compact kit.
It is used to measure the weight percent of bromide, chloride, calcium and zinc in a brine. These values are used to calculate the weight percent of
calcium chloride, calcium bromide and zinc bromide
present in the brine.
The kit may also be used to test a brine qualitatively
for zinc. A comprehensive procedure supplied with
each kit provides step-by-step test instructions.
Formulation for all calculations is given in a simple,
straightforward form.
The Baroid Hydrometer Kit includes eight specific
gravity hydrometers. These hydrometers measure
specific gravity from 0.8 to 0.91 for diesel and 1.0 to
2.4 specific gravity at 60°/60°F.
A thermometer with a scale that ranges from -30°F
to 120°F is a standard accessory to the kit. All the
instruments are protected in a non-corrosive, padded,
easy-to-carry case. Individual pieces of the kit are
available upon request and a 250 ml cylinder (made of
heavy glass) is offered as a convenient addition to the
kit.
All the hydrometers in the kit measure to the nearest 0.002 specific gravity. They are recommended for
use in brine analyses and are designed to work in

Baroid's Brine Crystallization Kit is a field-portable unit
designed for measuring the crystallization temperature of high-density oilfield brine fluids used in completion, workover and drilling operations. This kit

determines the concentration of PHPA (partially
hydrolyzed polyacrylamide) through a simple analytical

The Baroid Water Analysis Kit was developed for precise field analysis of water treating problems in oilfield
production installations. This kit contains chemicals,

The methylene blue dye test is especially designed to
determine the capacity of a clay to adsorb cations from
solution.
Like all cation exchange methods, the methylene
blue test measures the total exchange capacity of the
clay system. Results depend on the type and mineral
content of clay present. The reactive portions of the
clay are involved. Such materials as finely ground limestone, sand, and barite do not absorb methylene blue.

The FANN Capillary Suction Timer (CST) is an instrument
that measures the filtration rate of free water in aqueous
systems between two electrodes using filter paper as the
medium. The CST value is primarily an indication of cake
permeability, and has many industry applications in determining how fluids of different ionic composition and
product mix will disperse solids.
The instrument is ideal for use in the field as it operates on one 9-volt battery. The complete unit consists of
a timer unit, test head assembly with funnel, 9-volt battery and battery eliminator (115-volt), one box of filter
paper and instructions.

DRILL PIPE CORROSION COUPONS
Drill Pipe Corrosion Coupons are used to study the
corrosive effects of a drilling fluid on drill pipe and to
evaluate the effectiveness of corrosion inhibitor treating programs.
All Drill Pipe Corrosion Coupons are made of CD
seamless mechanical tubing, type 4130, machine-finish steel. Each coupon has a serial number stamped
into it. Each coupon is packaged in a coupon envelope with a vapor-type inhibitor material to prevent
atmospheric corrosion.
Recorded on the coupon envelope are the coupon
serial number, the initial weight, the size and the К
factor for calculating corrosion rate. Due to the variation in size of the drill pipe box where the coupon is
placed, there may be a slight problem in obtaining a
good fit; i.e., not too loose and not too tight. The overlap in coupon sizes listed below should remedy this
problem.
Drill pipe size and type are listed in order of best fit.
The reweighing of Drill Pipe Corrosion Coupons shall
be the customer's responsibility. This is usually done
locally to obtain the weight loss information quickly.
Instructions for cleaning, weighing and calculating the
corrosion rate are included with each envelope.

The Galvanic Corrosion Monitor is an instrument
which continuously monitors the corrosion characteristics of a fluid. The instrument consists of two electrodes mounted in a high pressure pipe plug,.which
are connected to a microammeter mounted in a
weather resistant housing. The microammeter registers current generated by the corrosion occurring on
the electrodes while they are suspended in the fluid.
Observation of the galvanic current produced provides
a qualitative estimate of the corrosion rate.

DETERMINATION KIT
This test is used for analysis of oil muds. The aniline
number of a hydrocarbon solvent, such as diesel oil, is
determined in accordance with ASTM Test Procedure D
611. The aniline point is defined as the minimum equal
solution temperature for equal volumes of aniline and
solvent. At this temperature, the two liquids will be completely miscible, changing from a cloudy to a clear solution. The aniline point is a measure of the percentage of
aromatic constituents in the diesel or fuel oil, which cause
damage to rubber parts and/or a change in the solubility
of the emulsifiers used in the drilling fluid.
The test for flash point and fire point by the Cleveland
Open Cup is in accordance with ASTM Test Procedure D
92 for petroleum products. The flash point is defined as
the temperature at which a flash appears at any point on
the surface of the oil when a flame is passed over the
center of the cup 1/e-inch above the top of the cup. The
fire point is defined as the temperature at which the oil
ignites and continues to burn for at least five seconds
when the flame is passed over the cup. This apparatus is
intended for field use and the temperature of the flash
point and the fire point measured in the open cup are
normally 15 to 20 percent higher than the values obtained
by laboratory apparatus such as the Pensky-Martens
Closed Cup Tester.
The aniline point of oil indicates the oil's aromatic content.
Oils with high aromatic content are detrimental to rubber
products such as those commonly found on drilling rigs.
The Aniline Point Determination Kit is designed specifically for use in finding the aniline point of oils used in
drilling muds so that damage to rubber parts from the oil
can be minimized.

CYLINDERS:
Graduated cylinders are used in a number of different
instruments and test kits. Cylinders which have the same
volumetric capacity are offered with different types of
calibration so that the user may select equipment either to
precisely deliver or to contain the specified volumes.
Because some liquid is always retained on the walls of
such glassware, the user must consider whether the test
requires an exact delivery of a specified volume of fluid or
whether the amount of fluid collected or contained must
be precisely measured.
In test procedures where the graduated cylinders are
used as receivers, such as in filtration tests and in API
fluid loss tests, or in retort analysis for the liquid and solid
content of a drilling fluid, the glassware is precisely calibrated "To Contain" the indicated amounts at 20°C. Such
glassware is identified as "TC at 20°C".
Other test procedures require that the amount of fluid
which is dispensed must be precise and these graduated
cylinders are calibrated "To Deliver" the indicated
amounts at 20°C by allowing for any hold-up on the walls
of the glass. Such glassware is identified as "TD at 20°C".
A test procedure should state the required precision .
and/or calibration so that the user can select the optimum
type of graduated cylinder. Some field test procedures
have not previously required such consideration of precision in the selection of glassware. Advances in drilling
fluids technology have dictated a need for greater test
precision, even in field testing situations. For test procedures where the graduated cylinder is only used as a container, as for the hydrometer test, precise calibration is not
indicated so that the most economical labware can be
supplied.

We supply two types of reusable glass pipettes, serological and volumetric.
Graduated or Measuring Pipettes are also called serological pipettes and are, in effect, a small burette. They are
used to deliver, more or less precisely, volumes of solutions or reagents. They are not used for the measurement
of variable volumes with the same degree of precision as
a laboratory burette. They are calibrated "To Deliver" at
20°C. Some graduated pipettes are calibrated "To
Deliver/Blow Out". After being allowed to drain, the drop

Volumetric or Transfer Pipettes have only one graduation
mark and are used to deliver an exact volume of solution.
The mark is placed on the upper stem which has a small
diameter. They are calibrated to deliver at 20°C. The
pipette is allowed to drain naturally in such a manner that
the liquid delivered does not spatter. The top of the pipette
is held against the inner wall of the receiving vessel for
several seconds. The last portion of the liquid remains in
the pipette and is not blown out. Pipettes are both calibrated and used in this manner. Graduation: Some
pipettes are calibrated "To Deliver/Blow Out". These must
be allowed to drain. Then the drop that remains in the tip is
blown out. These pipettes are distinguished by two frosted
