Identification
Discover Life, an organization which
collects and disseminates information to understand, manage, conserve, enjoy, and benefit from the
diversity of life on our planet, has
started an All Taxa Biodiversity
Inventory (ATBI) of Great Smoky
Mountains National Park (GSMNP).
This project is a comprehensive
study of all the species within the
Park. The need for the inventory
is simple—it’s difficult to preserve
something if you don’t know it
exists. Discover Life believes that
a worldwide network of schools,
community groups, and citizen
scientists, facilitated by scientists
and technology, can assemble
enough knowledge and wherewithal
over the next 50 years to save many
species from extinction.
As part of the study, the YSI 556
is used to measure all field water
quality parameters. These parameters are used to identify conditions
that may affect the density and
diversity of Oligochaeta (true
segmented worms in the phylum
Annelida). Some oligochaetes are
restricted to unique as well as
disjunct habitats such as caves,
springs, other groundwater habitats,
and even thermal vents in the ocean.
The GSMNP-ATBI will collect
information on the distribution,
abundance, and natural history
of an estimated 100,000 species
that inhabit the Park.

It’s no surprise to aquaculturists
that dissolved oxygen is the most
crtical ingredient for successful
growth of aquatic animals and that
life can be supported only when the
concentration of oxygen is within
certain limits. Too much, and your
livestock dies. Too little, and your fish
either die or won’t eat in an effort
to seek out more oxygen.
The recommended method of
dissolved oxygen measurement can
vary significantly based on the
given application. For intensive
(high density) recirculating
applications, full-time monitoring
and control with pure oxygen dosing
may be the most efficient method
to ensure proper concentrations
of dissolved oxygen and healthy
livestock. Other applications,
typically lower intensity, may be
well-suited for sampling with a
handheld instrument.

Oxygen
Measurements
YSI instruments are designed to
be user-friendly. There are a few
things, however, which will make
your DO readings more accurate.
Calibration of the probe consists
of exposing the probe to a sample
of known oxygen content and
adjusting the instrument readout
to that value. Three basic techniques
are used—Winkler titration,
air-saturated water, and watersaturated air. Instructions are
included with each product.
Compensation circuitry for
temperature is needed because,
as molecular activity increases or
decreases, the diffusion of oxygen
through the membrane will rise
or fall. YSI uses highly-sensitive
thermistors with temperature
coefficient circuitry that will
match the coefficient of membrane
permeability.
Stirring is important for accurate
readings because the oxygen outside
the sensor becomes depleted. This
will cause the reading to be low.
DO sensors require a flow rate of
one foot per second to provide
accurate samples. YSI offers selfstirring BOD probes and probes
with MEA technology for the
YSI 95 instrument.
