This instructions manual provides the most important information of
instruments according to "3-A Sanitary Standard for Sensors and
Sensor Fittings and Connections, Number 74".
1.2Scope

These instructions apply to radar sensors VEGAPULS 63 with
hygienic process fittings and seals. You can find the fittings chapter
"Manufacturer declaration", instructions to the seals in chapter "Instrument versions".

2 3-A-Standards - Meaning and
implementation
Meaning of 3-A
The 3-A Sanitary Standards Incorporation issues hygienic standards
giving specifications for the materials, the mechanical designs and
the manufacturing methods. The organisation checks if the hygienic
designs have been complied with. Conformity is checked by an
independent third agency, CCE (Certified Conformance Evaluator).
In case of conformity, 3-A SSI (Sanitary Standards, Incorporation)
awards a symbol license for the 3-A logo.
Use of instruments according to 3-A
The use of instruments and components with the 3-A logo provides
proof that the configuration was tested. The certificate always refers to
a combination of sensor and process fitting. Both components of this
combination must conform with 3-A. It looks like the following:
The requirements for installations according to 3-A are much higher
than those for standard applications. This applies especially to:

Version of the housing (e.g. easy cleaning)
Configuration of the process fitting (e.g. visibility of possible leakage)
Seals (e.g. FDA and 3-A conformity, resistiveness)
Installation position on the vessel (e.g. self-drainage)
Cleaning, maintenance (intervals, methods)

Housing
3 Instrument versions
For use according to 3-A standard, the housing is preferably of stainless steel, electropolished (Z). On these instruments, e.g., the transition to the process fitting is shortened for better cleanability.
This housing version is suitable for measurement loops with increased hygienic requirements and applications where a daily wet
cleaning is required. As orientation, the definition of the zone division
acc. to EHEDG is valid.
If "3-A certification" is selected in the configurator, the housing will be
marked with a "3-A" logo.
The single chamber housing version stainless steel electropolished
(8) can be used in applications with low hygienic requirements where
for example an outside dry cleaning is sufficient.
Process fittings
Only process fittings listed in chapter "Manufacturer declaration" may
be used for installations according to 3-A standards.
They meet the hygienic requirements of 3-A standards no. 63 and
74 including the requirement for self-drainage in case of a leak in the
instrument seal.
Only the welded sockets listed in chapter "Manufacturer declaration"
may be used for installation according to 3-A standards.
Seals
Only suitable, 3-A conform seals must be used for applications according to 3-A standards:

Note the following items for a measuring point according to 3-A
standard:

All parts of the measuring point must be certified according to 3-A
The sensor must be mounted vertically from top.
The mounting position must enably the self-drainage of the sensor
Welded connections must have a surface roughness ≤ 0.8 µm and
must be free from any defects
Welding sockets must be welded flush with the inside of the vessel

According to 3-A standard no. 74, it is the responsibility of the user to
ensure the hygienically safe condition of the sensor during its entire
service life.
This includes selecting the seal material according to 3-A standards. A leaky seal represents a hygienic risk. To avoid this, the seals
should be replaced with new ones at regular intervals and the sensor
checked for damage. The accessible surface must be cleaned carefully when the seal is exchanged.
The user plans the intervals according to the process conditions and
seal materials.
The sensor should be kept clean by using validated, state-of-the-art
cleaning processes. Success should be checked by dismounting the
sensor. The user is responsible for ensuring that the seal material as
well as the sensor itself are resistant to the medium and the cleaning
process. Resistance lists as well as the technical data of the respective sensor can serve as a basis for selection.
