Dentrix Image to DEXIS Converter Utility
Dentrix Converter is a utility program that converts Dentrix Image data to DEXIS 9 data.
Dentrix Converter migrates Dentrix Image patient information, images and related image
information from the Dentrix Image database/file system to the DEXIS data storage
hierarchy.
This document provides information about installing and running Dentrix Converter 2.0.
Database conversion is a time-consuming process and can take many
hours to complete. Ensure that adequate time has been planned for this
operation. For reference, conversion of a database has been timed at
approximately 8,000 images an hour. Actual performance will vary
depending on the performance characteristics of the PC.

Dentrix Image to DEXIS Converter Utility User Guide
Please note: Typically, Dentrix Converter is used for existing Dentrix Image customer who
are migrating to DEXIS and have a freshly installed DEXIS Data folder. If DEXIS is already in
use at the site with images populated in the DEXIS Data folder, it is recommended that
DEXIS be installed on another system (not the populated system), and the data converted to
the empty DEXIS Data folder. After the converted images have been reviewed and verified
as satisfactory, use DEXcopy to copy them into the previously-populated DEXIS Data folder.

4. Understand Dentrix Converter limitations.
Dentrix Converter does NOT convert all Dentrix Image information from the Dentrix
Image database and image storage to the DEXIS hierarchy. Dentrix Converter has the
following limitations:
a. Cosmetic images are treated as intraoral/extraoral images (DEXIS does not
provide cosmetic functionality)
b. Does not convert movies
c. Does not convert graphical annotations
d. Does not convert exam templates (not used in DEXIS)
e. Does not convert reference images
f. Images with more than one audio annotation will be combined into one audio
annotation
g. Image notes longer than 1024 characters may be truncated
Acknowledge that you understand the limitations of Dentrix Converter 2.0 by clicking
on the check box ; Acknowledge – Limitations.
5. Retain/backup the Dentrix Image database.
Dentrix Converter 2.0 does not modify the Dentrix Image database or files. It is
recommended that the Dentrix Image software, database and external files be
retained (not uninstalled) as an archive. Customers can also continue to use Dentrix
Image for cosmetic imaging functions.
Alternatively, after successfully installing DEXIS and converting the Dentrix Image
database and files to DEXIS, the Dentrix Image database and files may be removed.
Before removing Dentrix Image, backup up the Dentrix Image database and external
files (audio, images, movies, notes, objects, postages, slides and vidconf) so the
Dentrix Image software can be restored along with the database and external files if
necessary.

Review the log files for errors and check that the converted data is satisfactory for use.

numbered in Dentrix Image or are not convertible to a DEXIS tooth range, defined as
upper and lower tooth numbering. Examples are: single tooth numbers, upper or
lower tooth numbers only, or tooth number labels that were defined in Dentrix Image
but that are not part of the standard default tooth numbers installed with Dentrix
Image database (US or International).
•
Some images may have to be rotated after conversion.
If the conversion fails, call DEXIS Customer Care at 1-888-883-3947.
