Introduction
PCE-AS1 is a modern air sampling meter that helps users assess microbiological pollution. The
device uses the impaction principle when taking measurements. After air samples are taken and an
incubation has occurred, the number of microorganisms can be determined. The air sampling
meter must be used in a clean environment such as a pharmaceutical or food production facility.
The air sampling meter meets the latest requirements for devices used for airborne microbial
analysis. When samples are taken, the air particles enter through the surface of the meter. The
particles then hit the surface of the medium in the Petri dish. The medium maintains the activity of
the bacteria, creating the best conditions.

Please read the manual before using the device to prevent damages caused
by failing to observe the instructions.
The device is only to be used in the manner described. If the device is
used otherwise, it can cause a hazard.
Do not expose the device to extreme temperature, direct
sunlight or extreme humidity and moisture.
Make no technical changes to the device.
The device should only be cleaned with a wet cloth. Do not use abrasive or
solvent-based cleaning agents.
The device should only be used with PCE-offered accessories or
equivalent replacements.
The device must not be used when the ambient conditions
(temperature, humidity ...) are outside the specified limits.
If the device is not used for a long time, the device should be kept in a case. It is
recommended to use the device at least once a month for at least 20 minutes.

7 Construction
The air sampler consists of an upper and a lower part. The upper part consists of a collecting head, the
cover of the collecting head, the device for the plate, the pump and the pump part. The power supply,
the display and the control panel can be found on the lower part. The air sampler will run with DC as
well as AC. The on / off switch is located next to the connector to the charging of the battery on the
rear side of the device. When that is connected to the power supply, a green light illuminates on the
power supply if the device is fully charged. If it lights up red, the unit is charging.

8.2
Quick settings
Press the power button, and the device automatically displays the central user interface. To get
into the mode where you set the parameters for the measurement, press the "Menu" button:
·
Setting the measuring volume: Press the “select” button to set the cursor position. To find
the measuring volume you want, press the "down" button and set to the correct value. Press
the "exit" button to exit the menu or press the "Menu" button to adjust the next parameter.
·
Setting the measurement time delay: Use the “up” and “down” keys to set the correct value for
the parameter. Press the "exit" button to exit the setting mode or press the "Menu" button to
adjust the next parameter.
·
Setting the place to store the measured values: Use the “up” and “down” keys to set the
correct value for the parameter. Press the "exit" button to exit the setting mode or press the
"Menu" button to adjust the next parameter.
·
Saving the reading settings: Use the “up” and “down” keys to confirm that you want to store
the measurements. Select with the arrow buttons "Yes" and confirm this with "Select."
·
Select Start, then select Saved Group, select Start again, Saved Group will flash, press Start
·
and Select group, then Start to begin measuring with new settings. The setup of the device
is now complete.

8.3
Detailed settings
To turn on the unit, press the "power" button. The indicator lights up and the device automatically
performs a self-test. After the test is completed, the air sampler automatically switches to the
central user interface. To specify the settings, press the "menu" button:
·
Setting the measuring volume: See point 8.1 of the operating instructions. Set volumes from 10
to 6000 liters in increments of 10 mm.
·
Setting measurement time delay: See point 8.1 of the operating instructions. The delay time
can be set between 0 and 256 seconds in intervals of one second.
·
Setting the place to store the measured values: See point 8.1 of the operating
instructions. Storage code of the readings goes from 00 up 99.
·
Saving the reading settings: See point 8.1 of the operating instructions. Note: Select with the
arrow buttons "Yes" and confirm this with "Select.” If "No" is selected, this is not confirmed.
·
Select Start, then select Saved Group, select Start again, Saved Group will flash, press Start
and Select group, then Start to begin measuring with new settings.
·
Deleting the measurement settings: Use the arrow keys to determine whether measurement
settings are to be deleted. To the confirm deletion, use the “Select” button. Note: When this
is done, all settings will be deleted.
·
Setting the backlight timing: The timing of the backlight has a range of 0 to 256 seconds and
can be set to intervals of one second. To set the cursor position, use the “Select” button. Press
the "down" button around the time of the backlight setting. To confirm, use the “Menu” button or
the “Select” button.
·
Setting the time on the device: Press the “Select” button to change cursor position. Then use the
"down" button to set the correct time. Press the "Menu" or "Exit" button to apply the setting. The
same process applies to setting the date and system language.
·
Deleting the data: Use the arrow keys until the desired action on the display can be seen. By
pressing the "select" button, the deletion is confirmed. Note: When this is done, all measurement
data will be deleted.

Insert the Petri dish

General information
According to the requirements of the GMP ("good manufacturing practice") a suitable plank tablemicrobial medium must be chosen and prepared well on the plate. A right bracket must be used to
determine a point above the plate. Also, the temperature of the dish must be appropriate at the
start of the measurement.

8.6
Measuring process
·
Remove the cover from the collecting head. The collecting head should be sterilized in an
autoclave at 121 ° C for 30 minutes (sterilization with a cloth with 75% alcohol is also
possible). After sterilization, the cover should be placed back on the collecting head. The
Petri dish should also be sterilized with 75% alcohol.
·
Switch on the device. The display should show the current date and time settings, the battery
level, the storage, the last set of the measuring volume, the delay time and other information.
·
In the air sampler, a Petri dish with a middle diameter of Ø 70 ~ 90 mm should be used. The
Petri dish is inserted into the device below the collecting head and pushed down to the
bottom of it. The collecting head must first be removed and then restored. The cover of the
collecting head can be removed.
·
Press the "sampling" button to access the quick settings. The device automatically loads the
last settings or the last relevant parameter is shown (via the parameter group code). When
the "select" button is pressed, the cursor position can be changed. By using the "Up" and
"Down" buttons, the appropriate group code can be found. Press the "select" key to confirm
the appropriate group code and the device is in the mode change. When the delay time has
expired, the measurement pump is activated. This lasts until the preset measuring volume is
reached. Then, the measuring pump is disabled automatically again. The screen will switch
again to the normal user interface. The measuring process is over and the data be
automatically saved.
·
Remove the collecting head of the device and remove the plate and cover these with their
covers, mark the number, and place the plate in an incubator until the needed constant
temperature is reached.
·
To take more measurements, the collecting head must again be sterilized and the previous
steps must be repeated.
·
In the main menu, press the "select" button to start the query for the data. This is before the
appropriate data displayed (incl. the measuring quantity, the sample rate, measuring time, the
code of the measuring location and other information are displayed). It is possible to store up
to 2000 pages of data. If the "Select key" is pressed, it moves the cursor to the desired
position. In this way, the various pages can be seen. By pressing the "exit" button, you can
return to the main menu.
·
In the measuring mode, the "exit" button can manually stop the measurement. This is the
function measuring pump, the display of the measurement of total stops and the central
user interface is displayed.

Maintenance and precautionary measures
·
Do not perform sampling with toxic corrosive gas. The device is also not for use in sour or
alkaline environments. It is not allowed in areas where there is fine dust of 0.3 mg / m ³.
Do not press the "sample" button before covering, because the pump can overheat and
be destroyed.

Completely charge the battery before each use to prevent damage.
·
When the plate is inserted, it should be snug and reach the ground.
·
After each use, the collecting head and top should be cleaned with 75% alcohol. Then
the cover must be placed again on the collecting head set.
Troubleshooting
