ScanSource Security Focus Fall 2014
Carl Smith, System Design-Support Engineer, ScanSource Security
Dear IP Man:
I’m not ready to make the leap into wireless
cameras, but I like the convenience they
offer when it comes to installation. Do you
have any ideas how I can get that kind of
convenience with wired IP devices?
Convenience Conscious
Dear Conscious:
I feel your pain. Running cable to wired
cameras can be a challenge. That’s why
we’re frequently asked about wireless
security cameras. And while there are
some great wireless cameras available,
there aren’t a lot of them to choose from.
Of the 1,300+ cameras that we carry
at ScanSource Security from various
manufacturer partners, only about ten
are wireless. And most of them are
indoor cameras.
Here’s an idea: If you’re looking for the
selection offered from wired cameras, but
the ease of installation provided by wireless
cameras, maybe you consider piggybacking
off of an existing WiFi installation.
Think about it. A lot of APs today have a
secondary Ethernet port. Some of those
even offer the ability to do PoE pass thru.
1 | ScanSource Security Focus Fall 2014
This port is typically not used for anything.
So, you can simply plan to position the
cameras near existing APs and plug your
“wired” Ethernet IP camera into your
existing AP. The infrastructure is already
there. Or, if you’re installing a new wireless
system at the same time, plan on designing
the wireless and camera system together
to minimize cable pulls.
There are a couple of things to take into
consideration for this approach. The first
is throughput: make sure the IP camera
doesn’t oversaturate the capabilities of the
AP. Second, make sure you plan for power.
Will the AP power the camera? Or will a
separate power source be required?
By answering a few questions, taking
advantage of existing infrastructure and
being open to creative solutions, you can
turn a laborious task into a relatively simple
install. And remember, your ScanSource
Security support team is always ready to
answer any questions you may have.

Hiding in the Shadows
is No Longer an Option
It’s happened before. In a scene with extremely bright and
dark areas or in backlight situations where a person is in
front of a bright window, an event occurs that is captured
on camera. The problem is, even with HD cameras, objects
in the dark areas are hardly visible. The video is of no use
to law enforcement officials. And the bad guys lurk away
into the shadows.
The good news is, technology keeps advancing and video
cameras keep capturing more and more. Such is the case
with Axis Communications’ WDR – Forensic Capture
technology. An Axis camera with WDR – Forensic
Capture applies advanced algorithms to optimize image
quality and includes the ability to seamlessly transition
between WDR (Wide Dynamic Range) and low-light mode.
3 | ScanSource Security Focus Fall 2014
It optimizes video for forensic purposes by enabling an
extremely high level of detail to be visible in both dark
and bright areas of a scene. It’s a key technological
breakthrough in the prevention and prosecution of crime.
“WDR – Forensic Capture is the result of years of
development at Axis, combined with the best imaging
components on the market,” reports Erik Frännlid,
Director of Product Management at Axis Communications.
“Currently, the only cameras that feature Axis’ Forensic
Capture are the AXIS Q1615 and AXIS Q1615-E.”
In addition to WDR – Forensic Capture, the AXIS Q1615/-E
Network Cameras incorporate HDTV 1080P at 60fps with
advanced features such as Barrel Distortion Correction,
Image Stabilization, and Shock Detection. Plus, these fixed
cameras also support high profile in H.264 and enhanced
Max Bit Rate controllers to assure that the bandwidth
remains within the defined limits.

Cameras with WDR – Forensic Capture include
