Snowy Mountains, March 2014 - The new Octavia RS is a continuation of the
current model offensive of the Czech automaker, ŠKODA. The new RS is the
fastest production Octavia of all time. From April 2014, the third generation RS
will enter the Australian market in sedan and wagon versions. Both models are
equipped with powerful yet efficient engines, and boast sophisticated design as
well as innovative technology. Furthermore, the new RS models offer all of the
ŠKODA Octavia’s outstanding features: functionality, space, safety, innovative
comfort assistance systems, and excellent value.
The third generation Octavia RS is a sporty yet extremely practical vehicle. As the fastest
production Octavia of all time, the RS is the flagship model in the Octavia series and
represents 113 years of motorsports history.
New petrol and diesel engines with more power and lower fuel consumption
The new Octavia RS is available with a choice of two engines: a 162 kW two-litre petrol
engine and a 135 kW two-litre diesel engine. Compared with the second-generation
Octavia RS, the new engines make up to ten percent more power while saving up to
17 percent in fuel. Start-stop and brake energy recuperation systems are standard
features of both engines; the petrol engine is available with a manual or DSG dual
clutch transmission, each as a six-speed, whilst the diesel engine is available with a
DSG six-speed transmission.
Enhanced sports suspension, progressive steering and XDL differential
lock as standard
The new Octavia RS comes equipped with a new, lowered sports chassis. In the sedan and
wagon, the clearance is 12 mm and 13 mm lower than the standard Octavia respectively.

The MacPherson front axle with lower triangular wishbone suspension provides precise
front tracking. The rear axle uses a newly developed multi-link suspension for greater
stability and handling. Standard features also include the XDL extended electronic
differential lock, which is part of the ESC electronic stabilisation control. The new
progressive steering provides the third-generation ŠKODA Octavia RS with impressive
handling and agility.
Sporting design: aggressive yet sophisticated
The new ŠKODA Octavia RS conveys pure emotion from all angles. In both sedan and
wagon variants, the RS conveys a sense of understated athleticism. The attractive front
end is noted by its characteristic grille, air inlets with a honeycomb structure, a new
apron and fog lights in RS design as well as new bi-xenon headlamps with integrated
LED daytime running lights. RS badging completes the RS’s iconic, performance-driven
front appearance.
Seen from the side, the body is lower compared with the standard Octavia and,
in keeping with the rest of the new Octavia range, the RS has grown in length and width
in comparison with its predecessor. The new Octavia RS is longer (sedan + 88 mm,
wagon + 86 mm) and 45 mm wider than the previous Octavia with an increased wheel
base by 102 mm. These dimensions and a shortened front overhang underscore the
vehicle’s powerful appearance. Standard red brake callipers, powerful proportions, a high
tornado line and sharp, precise edges create passion.
Inside the new RS, newly designed RS sport seats are available in a standard fabric
and leather trim combination, or an optional Alcantara leather-appointed trim with
red contrast stitching. Adding to the list of sports-inspired standard equipment over
the standard Octavia range, the RS receives a sporty three-spoke steering wheel
with perforated leather and an instrument cluster with a colour multi function display.
Giving further exclusivity to the RS interior design, the steering wheel, gearshift,
door sill plates, seats, and floor mats display the iconic RS emblem.
Space, functionality, and many ‘Simply Clever’ solutions
In keeping with the entire Octavia range, both the sedan and wagon variants of the new
ŠKODA Octavia RS are equipped with an armada of useful features. This includes plenty
of room: the new model offers more interior length (1,782 mm) and more legroom (73 mm).
The RS sedan’s boot volume has grown by eight litres to 568 litres, compared to the
previous Octavia. With a total of 588 litres, the Wagon RS offers even more storage volume.
In addition, the new Octavia RS is equipped with a number of standard ‘Simply Clever’
features. In the cabin, the door storage space includes a rubbish bin, a multimedia holder
that accommodates a range of mobile phones and portable media players, as well
as other storage spaces, racks and hooks, providing smart options for a tidy cabin.
For the first time in the Octavia RS, the boot is equipped with double-sided floor mat.

Five-star safety
The new ŠKODA Octavia RS offers the highest level of safety. Some of the newly
developed, active safety systems which come as standard include the multi-collision
brake with automatic braking action engaged following an accident, Passenger Protect
Assist and Fatigue Detection. Front Assist with emergency braking is also available in the
optional Tech Pack. These systems help avoid accidents or minimise the effects of an
accident on passengers and other road users.
In the event of an accident, a comprehensive package of passive safety systems
maximises the protection of the driver and passengers. Nine airbags work in sync
with three-point seatbelts to protect driver and passengers from injuries. Furthermore,
the newest ŠKODA model’s precise sports suspension, the long wheel base, and the
rigid, lightweight body contribute to its highly stable handling characteristics. Based on
extensive safety testing, ANCAP has awarded the Octavia range a five-star safety rating.
Innovative comfort systems
Already laden with countless comfort systems, there is little left to be desired in the new
Octavia RS. However, adding an additional level of comfort and convenience, the optional
Tech Pack equips the RS with Adaptive Cruise Control, which adjusts and maintains the
distance to the vehicle ahead, and Automatic Parking Assist, which aids in both parallel
and vertical parking. The Tech Pack also includes the Keyless-Entry-Start-and-ExitSystem (KESSY), while the optimised CANTON sound system also available with the
Tech Pack provides pure listening enjoyment for the whole cabin.
The Columbus radio navigation system (standard) with 3D navigation display uses a large
eight–inch touch screen with a resolution of 800 × 480 pixels. A DVD player (audio and
video) takes the place of a conventional CD player. In addition, Columbus offers a screen
with proximity sensors, media-in connection including Apple video functionality, menu
guidance, eight loudspeakers, two SD card slots, Bluetooth high-end telephone
functionality, voice control, JPEG viewer and an internal 64 GB flash memory. It features
a Media-In connection, located separately underneath the air-conditioning operating
panel, which prevents cable chaos.

The new Octavia RS is an expression of pure driving emotion. Both the sedan
and the wagon version impress with powerful proportions, a sporty appearance,
and highest level of precision. At the same time, the new RS generation boasts
outstanding functionality and plenty of room.
The ŠKODA Octavia RS is dynamic and assured. Focus on essentials, clear lines, precise
edges – these were the guiding principles for the new Octavia’s power version. The new
Octavia RS combines dynamic elegance and the Octavia’s high functionality with the
genes of a purebred sports car.
Powerful sophistication
The new model’s front view is clearly a winner. Here, headlights with black background,
RS-specific bumpers, newly designed fog lights, distinctive air inlets and the new front
grille including the RS emblem show a perfect balance of dynamics. The sedan and
wagon share the same front end. For the first time, the new ŠKODA Octavia RS comes
with standard bi-xenon headlights with integrated LED daytime running lights. The black
highlighted headlights are another new feature. The LED daytime running lights form a
narrow strip below the main headlights. The headlight element’s accurate, clearly-cut
form and its horizontal alignment underscore the width of the Octavia RS’s front,
its skilful artistic design highlighting this precision.
Among the striking features of the Octavia RS are the fog lamps in their specific RS
design, extending the horizontal shape of the headlights and combining with them to
form a “clover leaf”. Additional honeycomb-shaped air intake openings are located
below the fog lamps. The specifically formed RS apron is dominated by a wide air
intake, which is also designed in a black honeycomb structure. The centre of the upper
front is the radiator grille with 21 black, vertically aligned blades. In the front view,
the RS badge is located at the bottom right of the grille. The grille on the new Octavia RS
is larger and positioned higher than in the car’s second generation. Furthermore,
the designers set off the grille from the headlights for added effect. Gently curved lines
add dynamics to the outside design. A thin chrome strip frames the radiator grille for
an elegant, clear finish. The front end of the bonnet – the so-called premium space –
displays the new ŠKODA logo.
Powerful proportions
The attractive silhouette of the new ŠKODA Octavia RS impresses with a particularly dynamic
appearance. Compared with its predecessor, the wheelbase of the new Octavia RS grew by
102 mm to 2,680 mm, and the front overhang was shortened by 41 mm to 899 mm.

The sedan’s total length grew by 88 mm to 4,685 mm and the wagon’s length was
extended by 86 mm to 4,685 mm. These new proportions make the Octavia RS appear
even more powerful. Another factor is the body, which sits lower in the Octavia RS than
in the standard version.
Seen from the side, the Octavia RS sedan and wagon appear very clear with sharp lines.
A high tornado line accentuates the closed, sharp side profile. It underlines the vehicle’s
powerful appearance and visually elongates the car. The sharp lines cause a striking
contrast of light and shadow. On both the sedan and the wagon, the roof line gently
drops toward the rear and elegantly flows into the C or D pillar. The C pillar in the
Octavia RS is positioned far to the rear, providing a clear differentiation from the traditional
3-box design. The sloped rear window underlines the dynamic effect. The rear end of the
Octavia Wagon RS is dynamic and effortless, tail lights reaching far into the side of the
rear section visually extending the tornado line.
Wheels in exclusive RS-Design
The ŠKODA Octavia RS’s new alloy wheels provide a very sporty touch. The designers
created two bi-colour RS wheel designs that are visually striking, optically light with
sharp edges and precise in craftsmanship down to the last detail. The standard Octavia
RS comes with silver 18” Pictoris alloy wheels and 225/40 size tyres. Customers after
even sportier rims can choose the 18” Gemini or 19” Xtreme aluminium alloy rim in black.
Another distinguishing feature of the new Octavia RS is its standard red brake callipers.
Sporty RS tail
The tail view immediately defines the sporty characteristics of the Octavia RS. A powerful
black diffuser element dominates the bumper. Two wide, trapezoidal chrome tailpipes flank
the diffuser to the left and right. The tailpipes are thus recognisable design elements of the
RS. A wide reflective element runs above the tailpipes almost over the entire width of the
vehicle. Only the new Octavia RS is equipped with this reflective strip, making the car easy
to spot in the dark. The sedan and wagon now also come standard with LED taillights in the
typical ŠKODA C-shape, where two LED strips make up the C. Overall, the rear of the new
RS looks precise and tidy. The new ŠKODA brand logo is centrally positioned on the tailgate.
The ŠKODA lettering is located on the left of the tailgate, and the Octavia model name can
be seen on the right. The RS designation is positioned at the lower right corner of the
tailgate. Two cubist triangular elements on the left and the right of the tailgate characterise
the rear of the RS. They visually connect the taillights with the tailgate. These triangles are
an elegant stylistic element common for all new ŠKODA models.
Seven colours including one exclusively for RS
One exclusive RS hue and six additional colours are available for the exterior of the new
Octavia RS. The solid “Steel Grey” is brand new and exclusive to the RS. The RS is also
available in Candy White (solid) and the following metallic colours: Magic Black with
pearlescent effect, Race Blue, Brilliant Silver, Metal Grey and Moon White.

Interior: “Black is beautiful”
The interior of the Octavia RS is a continuation of the sporty exterior. Here, “Black is
beautiful” is the name of the game. Above the door frame, black dominates numerous
features, including the roof. The ambient door handle lighting on the inside of the doors
is a new attractive feature. Together with the instrument panel lighting and the black
interior, it provides a unique lighting ambiance.
Specially designed RS sport seats offer secure side support both for the driver and the
passenger and are highly ergonomic in design. The interior designers also developed
RS specific seat covers with red ornamental stitching providing a sporty contrast.
Customers can select fabric-leather combinations or Alcantara leather-appointed seats.
The Octavia RS driver holds onto a sporty 3-spoke multifunction steering wheel with
perforated leather and red ornamental contrast stitching. In addition to the ŠKODA logo,
the steering wheel bears the RS emblem. Both the gearshift knob and the parking brake
handle are leather upholstered with red contrast stitching. The instrument cluster with its
colour multi function display shows off a unique RS graphic and numbers in RS design.
With their stainless steel embossing and the RS logo, the front door sill plates are visually
RS-specific as well. The pedals are brushed stainless steel. The brand’s designers have
successfully redefined the interior of the Octavia RS. Aesthetic, precise, and high-quality
– from controls to air intake vents to the dashboard, steering wheel, gearshift knob, panels,
door handles to power windows: The motto is “everything new and extremely functional”.
The horizontal lines and generous space make the interior of the Octavia RS a success.
There are no decorative strips to divide the dashboard into usual partitions. This makes
the interior appear particularly fresh and allows both front-seat passengers to follow the
instruments as well. Much attention has been paid to ergonomic design. Below the
hazard lights switch, the centre console houses the radio infotainment system with its
menu and radio buttons. The air conditioning, heating and ventilation controls are located
underneath the infotainment module. Clarity and precision are clearly the central theme
for all elements in the interior.

More power and lower fuel consumption are the hallmarks of the newly
developed engines for the ŠKODA Octavia RS. Both the sedan and the wagon
can be fitted either with a 162 kW 2.0 TSI petrol engine or a 135 kW 2.0 TDI
diesel engine. Compared with the second-generation Octavia RS, fuel
consumption has been reduced by up to 17 percent.
Both are four-cylinder, four-valve turbocharged engines with start-stop and regenerative
braking systems as standard features. The petrol engine is available with a manual or
DSG dual clutch transmission, each as a six-speed whilst the diesel engine is available
in DSG only.
Efficient 2.0 TSI/162 kW petrol engine
The new Octavia RS’s 2.0 TSI petrol engine puts out 162 kW, 15 kW more than its
predecessor. The maximum torque grew by 25 percent or 70 Nm to 350 Nm between
1,500 and 4,000 rpm.
The petrol engine boast excellent acceleration, including in-gear figures: In fifth gear,
the new manual transmission RS sedan accelerates from 80 to 120 km/h in a mere 6.4
seconds, and even in sixth gear, this takes only 7.9 seconds, 1.5 seconds less than its
predecessor. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 6.8 seconds, 0.5 seconds less than
before. The sedan with manual six-speed transmission now reaches a maximum speed
of 248 km/h, which is 8 km/h faster than the second-generation Octavia RS. The wagon’s
maximum speed is 244 km/h. Despite the significantly improved performance, the new
petrol engine is more economical than its predecessor. The petrol engine with manual
transmission uses a mere 6.4 l/100 km, which is 17 percent or 1.3 l less. CO2 emissions
decreased by 32 g to 147 g/km.
Diesel power with new 2.0 TDI/135 kW
The new 2.0 TDI/135 kW diesel engine delivers impressive power and efficiency.
Thanks to 10 additional kW and a maximum torque of 380 Nm at 1,750 to 3,250 rpm
(30 Nm more than its predecessor), the Octavia RS diesel with DSG dual clutch automatic
transmission will accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 8.2 seconds and achieve a
maximum speed of 230 km/h.

The in-gear acceleration figures for the diesel engine are equally impressive. In fifth gear,
the sedan will accelerate from 80 to 120 km/h in just 8.1 seconds. At the same time,
this generation’s fuel consumption and emissions values are lower than the previous
generation RS. The Octavia RS sedan with the 2.0 TDI/135 kW power plant uses 5.2
l/100 km and emits 134 g CO2 per kilometre. This value is an improvement of 13 percent
over the fuel consumption achieved by its 2.0 TDI/125 kW predecessor.
Focused modifications
Lower fuel consumption, more power – not a simple task and one that involved improving
many technical details in the new engines. The 2.0 TSI/162 kW petrol engine is based on
the EA888 third-generation four-cylinder series. The key elements of these modifications
include a newly developed cylinder head with integrated exhaust cooling and a dual
injection system with direct and manifold injection.
A new, fully-electric coolant regulator significantly improves thermal management,
cutting the time required for the engine warm up, in turn reducing friction and fuel
consumption. To improve the thermal management even more, engineers developed
a new rotary vane module which can block some or all coolant from flowing into the
engine during the warm-up phase. At regular operating temperature, the coolant
temperature can be quickly and flexibly adjusted to a variety of temperature levels
depending on load, throttle position and engine speed.
The design of the water-cooled exhaust routing to the turbo charger is innovative as well,
being completely integrated into the newly developed cylinder head. This type of exhaust
cooling significantly reduces full load fuel consumption in the new Octavia RS. The new
2.0 TDI/135 kW diesel engine is based on the EA288 series and includes specific
improvements such as to exhaust-relevant parts including the fuel injection system,
turbocharging and intercooling. Emission control components, such as the oxidation
catalytic converter and diesel particulate filter are now located closer to the engine.
Low-tension piston rings reduce friction within the engine. The balance shaft has a positive
impact on the engine’s acoustic expression and improves its smoothness. The new diesel
engines also work with innovative thermal management. During the engine‘s warm-up
phase, the cylinder head and the engine block are cooled via separate circuits. This both
improves the time to operating temperature and heats up the interior faster in winter.
Lightweight and stable – the body of the new ŠKODA Octavia RS achieves both. It is
made of nearly 70 percent high-grade steels. About one fourth of the body, not counting
doors and tailgates, is made of hot-worked, highest-grade steels. In comparison,
the second-generation Octavia RS included 6.3 percent hot-worked parts.

Thanks to high-grade and highest-grade steels, ŠKODA engineers achieved savings in
materials used. Furthermore, improvements have been made to the geometry of the
support structure and flat components. In this area, developers took advantage of
advances in virtual development processes: Computer applications helping to plan
available construction space with much more precision. For flat components, developers
improved computing of acoustic properties, saving insulation and thus weight.
Lighter chassis through optimised axles
The improved chassis of the Octavia RS has shed several kilograms in weight. Its rear
multi-link axle was specifically improved with regard to kinematics, acoustics, weight and
modular design. The axle’s weight declined from 53 kg to a mere 49 kg through the use
of high-grade steels and structural improvements to a number of components.
The MacPherson front axle (struts) with a newly designed, lower triangular wishbone
suspension has undergone consistent improvements with regard to functionality, weight,
and cost of all components. Weight savings are achieved through the use of high-tensile
steel on the transverse arm and an innovative bionic design on the swivel bearing.
Thanks to these measures, the front axle now weighs 2.8 kg less.

The new ŠKODA Octavia RS is as fast, agile and even safer than ever before,
thanks to its sports suspension, innovative progressive steering, and XDL
extended electronic differential lock – all standard. The long wheelbase and
the rigid, lightweight body ensure highly stable handling. Customers can select
from a large number of additional, innovative safety systems, from Front Assist
to the proactive Passenger Protect Assist. In case of a collision, a comprehensive
package of passive safety elements ensures the highest level of safety both for
the driver and for all passengers. The new Octavia range has been awarded a
5-star safety rating by ANCAP.
The high-performance sports suspension is standard on the new ŠKODA Octavia RS.
For performance purposes, the body of the RS sits lower than the standard Octavia’s.
The sports suspension ensures both highly stable and agile handling performance.
The rear axle on the new RS uses a newly developed multi-link suspension, both on the
sedan and on the wagon. The basic construction principle with a consistent separation
of longitudinal and transverse forces ensures excellent comfort and handling properties.
At the front of the new Octavia RS is a MacPherson front axle (struts) with a newly
designed, lower triangular wishbone suspension. High-tensile steel on the transversal
arm and an innovative bionic design approach on the pivot bearing provide more stability
and save weight. Located at the centre of the front axle, the subframe is designed for
maximum lateral rigidity. The wheelbase of the new Octavia RS is 102 mm longer than its
predecessor. By significantly extending the distance between the front and the rear axle,
an increase in driving stability has been achieved. Many active and passive safety
systems are standard on board of the new Octavia RS.
The advanced Electronic Stabilisation Control (ESC Sport), which switches off the
Anti- Slip Regulation (ASR) when pressed shortly, and turns the ESC Sport Mode on
when pressed longer, is standard equipment. When driving at high speeds and on winding
roads – such as on race courses – the ESC subsequently reacts later, enabling even more
agile handling. Other standard safety features include the multi-collision brake and XDL
extended electronic differential lock, both of which are part of the ESC, tyre pressure
control, nine airbags, and LED daytime running lights.

Extended electronic differential lock (XDL)
The third-generation ŠKODA Octavia RS is equipped with an EDL electronic differential
lock and the XDL advanced feature. Technically, these are driving dynamics features that
are part of the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) program. EDL and XDL are active on the
front axle. XDL ensures the car‘s neutral turning behaviour even with a dynamic driving
style. Softer braking action on the inner wheel allows for a torque increase on the outer
wheel. The resulting yaw moment accentuates cornering, enabling drivers to turn both
safely and quickly as XDL action increases in line with car speed in corners.
New progressive steering
The new progressive steering improves handling and agility on the Octavia RS.
This dynamic steering lets drivers use smaller steering wheel movements to achieve
a desired curve radius. The steering ratio changes depending on how far the wheel is
turned. A progressive steering system will turn the front wheels to a larger degree than
traditional steering systems when turned between 0 and 120 degrees. For city driving,
for instance when parking, the driver needs to turn the steering wheel much less to
move the vehicle in the desired direction. Progressive steering is particularly effective on
curvy roads. Small steering inputs are sufficient to safely steer the vehicle. Dynamic and
precise curve driving requires only small steering inputs, resulting in more agility and
driving enjoyment.
Innovative assistance systems for even more safety
For the first time, numerous innovative safety assistance systems are available for the
Octavia RS. Though none of the systems relieve drivers of their responsibility for driving
the car, they facilitate safe driving in many day-to-day and even in unusual traffic
situations. After a collision in traffic, there is often a risk of a further collision, i.e.
a second impact: with the vehicle in front, another road user or with obstacles such
as guard rails or trees. The multi-collision brake minimises this risk. The multi-collision
brake comes as standard equipment, automatically engaging upon a collision, even if the
driver no longer presses on the brake pedal. This prevents a further collision or at least
significantly reduces the speed of impact. The multi-collision brake is part of the
Electronic Stability Control (ESC). The braking action slows the vehicle to a remaining
speed of 10 km/h, with both hazard lights and brake lights switching on once the
multi-collision brake is activated. The driver can override the system at any time,
either by accelerating or by initiating an emergency stop. Developed by Volkswagen,
the multi-collision brake was hailed as a safety innovation by the German
automobile club ADAC.
The ŠKODA Octavia RS now for the first time includes a Front Assist system, which is
activated when a collision is imminent. Just like the Adaptive Cruise Control comfort
feature, the Front Assist uses the radar sensor in the front part of the vehicle which
constantly measures the distance to the vehicle ahead. The system runs through four
steps: The shorter the distance to the vehicle ahead, the more the Front Assist engages.

In the first step, the system displays a visual warning regarding the distance. The second
step is a visual and acoustic warning regarding the approaching obstacle, with the brake
system prepared. The main warning occurs in the third step, which increases brake
pressure and initiates automatic partial braking. The highest step switches the braking
assistant to highest sensitivity and triggers automatic braking. An emergency stop occurs
if the driver fails to react. The system can thus mitigate the severity of the accident and
may even prevent a collision depending on the situation.
At speeds between 5 and 30 km/h, the Front Assist uses City Emergency Braking.
At speeds below 30 km/h, the system initiates an emergency stop of the vehicle if the
driver fails to react to an obstacle in front of the vehicle. The City Emergency Braking
deceleration is 8 m/s2 for the highest collision risk.
One of the most frequent causes of accidents is driver fatigue. The new ŠKODA Octavia
RS is now equipped with a Fatigue Detection feature to address this issue. By monitoring
the steering behaviour, the system can discover deviations from normal driving behaviour
which can indicate decreasing concentration in the driver. The system begins analysing
the steering behaviour 15 minutes after engine start, storing the results as a basis for
a signal. In this analytics phase, a minimum speed of 65 km/h must be maintained.
A change in the characteristic steering behaviour determined indicates driver fatigue.
A visual warning on the instrument cluster recommends a break by signalling “Fatigue
Detected – Stop Recommended”.
The new ŠKODA Octavia RS now includes the proactive Passenger Protect Assist, another
system which was previously reserved mostly for luxury class vehicles. The Passenger
Protect Assist “prepares” the driver and front-seat passenger for an imminent crash:
In dangerous situations such as an emergency stop or a critical driving situation, the seat
belts for the driver and front-seat passenger are pre-tightened. In addition, the system
closes side windows and sun roof almost completely in critical, unstable driving
situations, for instance in case of over- or understeering with ESC activation. This helps
to prevent objects from entering the vehicle.
Comprehensive protection in collisions
If, despite all precautions, a collision or crash occurs, the Octavia RS offers the best
possible protection for the driver and all passengers. The Octavia RS comes standard with
driver knee airbag and rear side airbags. Nine airbags in total work in sync with 3-point
seatbelts to protect driver and passengers from injuries, providing comprehensive protection.
In case of a collision, all occupants are protected by 3-point seatbelts (height adjustable
in front) with belt tensioners. The integrated belt-force limiter reduces the risk of chest
forces. To improve child safety, Isofix child seats can be anchored on the rear seats and
attached with an additional TopTether belt. This securely attaches child seats to the car.

Safer and lighter body thanks to innovative manufacturing methods
Innovative use of high-grade steels as well as new manufacturing methods have enabled
ŠKODA to build both a lighter and a more stable body for this generation’s Octavia RS.
About one quarter (26.1 percent) of the safety architecture consists of hotworked,
highest-grade steels. These components are up to six times stiffer than regular
deep-drawing steels and up to four times stiffer than conventional high-grade steels.
These types of steel are produced by heating steel at high temperatures (c. 950°C),
pressing the steel in a red-hot state, and cooling it to 180°C within 5.5 seconds.
Components manufactured with this method can be much thinner though withstanding
the same crash impact, saving weight and increasing fuel economy.

The new ŠKODA Octavia RS’s standard equipment provides a wide range of comfort
features. The Octavia RS is based on the Octavia ‘Elegance’ equipment package,

the coloured multi function display in the instrument cluster and height-adjustable RS
Sports seats with leather-appointed lumbar support for the driver and passenger seats.
Illuminated interior door handles provide a special ambiance inside the vehicle.
The new sedan and wagon offer a series of innovative comfort assistants, which up to
now have never been or were only rarely available in the sporty mid-sized segment.
Available in the Tech Pack is the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). ACC maintains a safe
distance to the vehicle ahead at a selected speed, controlling the engine and actuating
the brakes to automatically accelerate or decelerate as needed. The system combines a
cruise control system with a distance controller. A radar sensor in the front of the vehicle
provides the required data. ACC works with manual transmissions or with DSG automatic
dual-clutch transmissions at a speed range of 30 to 160 km/h. At speeds under 30 km/h
in cars with manual transmission, the Front Assist, a component of ACC, activates
automatically and can slow the car down with maximum intensity. In the case of the
Octavia RS with DSG, the ACC can automatically slow down the vehicle all the way to
a full stop.
The ŠKODA Octavia RS features the most recent version of the Automatic Parking Assist,
which is available in the Tech Pack. In addition to entering and exiting parking spots
parallel to the traffic lane, the system now supports backing into parking spots
perpendicular to the traffic lane. This is how it works: The driver activates the system
with the push of a button while travelling at a speed less than 40 km/h and then uses his
turn signal to select on which side of the street he intends to park on. The system uses
ultrasound sensors to detect available parking spaces.

It then examines them for sufficient size and determines the starting point for the
parking manoeuvre, which it then performs automatically once the driver has put the car
in reverse and presses the accelerator. Accelerating and braking is left to the driver,
with the Automatic Parking Assist handling all other tasks comprising the parking
manoeuvre, including steering the car along an ideal trajectory. If the driver accelerates
to more than 7 km/h as the car enters the parking spot, or if the car encounters an
obstacle, the systems stops the car automatically using the emergency braking function.
The completely revised Automatic Parking Assist offers enhanced functionalities.
The system operates in combination with Columbus infotainment navigation systems.
Thanks to special distance sensors, the infotainment display provides acoustic and
visual notifications regarding the distance to the vehicles in front and in the rear.
During parking, the Intelligent Parking Assist only displays notifications in the direction
of the car’s motion.
The new Octavia RS features an expanded Driving Mode Selection compared to the
standard Octavia (available to order from May 2014). Four driving profiles are available:
NORMAL, SPORT, ECO and INDIVIDUAL. Depending on the selected mode, a whole
number of settings are adjusted, for example, in the engine and DSG transmission
control systems, coasting, power steering, ACC distance control, bi-xenon headlight
control or Climatronic A/C system. The NORMAL mode allows for relaxed driving but
also leaves leeway for dynamic driving. The SPORT mode provides for a more agile drive,
adjusting the power steering or the automatic shifting of the DSG transmission to a direct
and tight setting. The ECO mode leads to lower fuel consumption, with earlier shifting
points, slower throttle response and a more moderate setting of the air-conditioning
system. In the INDIVIDUAL mode, the driver can configure selected characteristics
of the Octavia RS to his or her liking.
KESSY (Keyless Entry Start and Exit System) is an extremely convenient feature and
available in the Tech Pack. The driver still needs to carry the key to the vehicle with
them, but is no longer required to hold it in their hand when they open and start the
vehicle. The KESSY control unit will recognise the key at a distance of up to 1.50 m from
the car. If the driver operates the door handle or the hatch of the boot, the vehicle will
unlock automatically. The car also starts at the push of a button located to the right of
the steering column.
The power operated panoramic tilt/slide sunroof is an optional feature for the Octavia RS.
In the sedan, the sunroof is a one-piece 821 × 981 mm pane of tinted, heat-insulating
glass. The wagon features a two-piece panoramic tilt/slide sunroof 1,362 × 870 mm in
size. The glass reflects 92 percent of the incoming heat and 90 percent of the light.
The sunroof of both models can be tilted and slid backward with the help of an electric
motor; in the Wagon, the front part of the panoramic roof opens, while the rear piece is
firmly anchored to the car. Upon opening, a wind-breaking element lifts up at the front

edge to prevent a draft into the interior of the cabin and to reduce wind noise.
Both driver and front-seat passenger can operate the panoramic roof using a rotary
switch located centrally in the front in the roof liner. Eight different settings are available.
In addition, the glass roof can be darkened as needed with a rolling mesh shade.
The tailgate of the Wagon RS can be opened and closed electrically (optional).
The tailgate can be opened and closed using two buttons in the tailgate, but can also
be opened from inside the vehicle by pressing a button on the centre console or on the
remote control. When the tailgate is opened from inside the vehicle or using the remote
control, the vehicle will emit an acoustic warning. It is also possible to set the maximum
top position of the tailgate when open.
The new RS features a completely newly developed generation of air-conditioning
systems with significantly increased efficiency. The fully automatic Climatronic system
manages the cabin’s interior temperature via a two-zone control based on sunlight,
air quality and humidity sensors. The sun sensor captures the intensity and direction
of the sun’s rays, while the humidity sensor actuates the Climatronic A/C system’s
compressor in line with demand, turning the compressor on and off as needed.
This leads to significant fuel savings.
Advanced infotainment with eight inch touchscreen
The new Octavia RS sedan and wagon feature an all-new generation of infotainment
navigation systems.
The Columbus radio navigation system (standard) will satisfy almost any infotainment
desire. Its 3D navigation display uses an 8–inch touch screen with a resolution of
800 × 480 pixels. A DVD player (audio and video) takes the place of the CD player.
In addition, Columbus offers a screen with proximity sensors, a media-in connection
including Apple video functionality, menu guidance, 2 SD card slots, Bluetooth high-end
telephone functionality, voice control, a JPEG viewer and an internal 64 GB flash memory.
Above and beyond radio and navigation functions, all infotainment systems feature
vehicle-specific settings, which are controlled via the ‘CAR’ button next to the screen.
Depending on the vehicle’s equipment, the infotainment system can operate side
windows, exterior rear-view mirrors, parking sensors, lights or central locking.
A Bluetooth function with voice control and a multi-media holder, which is a storage
compartment for a mobile phone, are standard features.
The CANTON sound system offers particularly refined sound. Available in the Tech Pack,
the system comprises eight powerful loudspeakers in the side doors, one central
loudspeaker located in the dashboard, as well as a subwoofer in the boot. Total power
of the system is 570 watts.

The new ŠKODA Octavia RS is the perfect balance between practicality and

with lots of power and many carefully thought out “Simply Clever” details.
The new ŠKODA Octavia has set the benchmark for spacious mid-sized vehicles, and the
sporty new RS doesn’t disappoint in this area either.
Generous passenger and cargo space
The driver and passengers have plenty of space in the new ŠKODA Octavia RS, with a
longer passenger compartment and more leg room. The passenger compartment has
grown by 33 mm to 1,782 mm compared to its predecessor. The knee room in the rear
grew to 73 mm. The Octavia RS now also features more headroom in the front and back
(the front of the sedan is now 983 mm instead of its previous 981 mm and the rear is
now 980 mm instead of its previous 966 mm). Elbow room was also considerably
increased, in the front by 39 mm to 1,454 mm and in the rear by 26 mm to 1,449 mm.
Similarly, shoulder room was considerably optimised, in the front to 1,398 mm by adding
19 mm and in the rear to 1,378 mm, a plus of 4 mm.
The boot’s capacity in the sedan has increased by another eight litres to 568 litres
compared to its predecessor, while the boot capacity of the wagon has also increased
by eight litres to 588 litres. The compartment can be extended to 1,558 litres (sedan)
and 1,718 litres (wagon), respectively, by folding down the rear seats. Folding down
the passenger seat allows transport of objects up to 2.92 meters in length.
The tailgate of the wagon RS swings wide open and makes loading extremely easy:
the boot opening reaches an impressive 1,070 mm – an increase of 9 mm in comparison
to its predecessor. The boot opens to 1,070 mm in width, too (Octavia Wagon II: 1,061 mm).
The Octavia RS’s loading sill is even lower than in the standard Octavia thanks to the
lowered chassis: the wagon’s loading sill is only 619 mm high, while the sedan’s is 687 mm.
The new Octavia RS is bigger in all respects: the car is exactly 88 mm longer, at 4,685
mm (wagon 86 mm), and 45 mm wider than its predecessor (without the side mirrors),
at 1,814 mm. At the same time, the wheelbase grew by 102 mm. These new dimensions
do not just result in an impressive appearance, they also make the new Octavia RS
extremely spacious.

Simply Clever through and through
The new ŠKODA Octavia RS boasts a whole range of “Simply Clever” features.
In the boot, the Octavia RS features foldaway hooks on which to hang shopping bags.
Two lamps in the boot ensure plenty of light, and there is a 12 volt socket to power
appliances such as a cooler box at the back of the vehicle. For the first time ever,
the Octavia RS offers a double-sided floor mat in the boot: during normal use,
a high-quality carpet ensures comfort and provides a pleasant appearance. The floor
mat can be turned over for travelling with items like muddy shoes or plants on a dirt
and water-repellent surface.
The interior of the ŠKODA Octavia RS is typically “Simply Clever” and extremely
functional. It has all of the standard Octavia’s familiar features. A multimedia holder in
the cup holder of the centre console will store a mobile phone or iPod. There are rubbish
bins for the storage compartments in the doors. The armrest, a large storage
compartment in the centre console, and a storage compartment under the passenger
seat also come as standard in the Octavia RS. In terms of cup holders, up to eight bottles
can go into dedicated holders: one 1.5 litre bottle in each of the two front doors, two 0.5
litre bottles up front in the centre console, one 0.5 litre bottle each in both rear doors and
optionally, two 0.5 litre bottles in the folded-down rear centre armrest.

The new ŠKODA Octavia RS is the fastest and most powerful Octavia in history.
The third generation of this popular sports car is another ŠKODA RS model
making an expressive statement and successfully continuing the line of Octavia
RS models. In 2000, the first generation of the ŠKODA Octavia became the first
ŠKODA for end customers to be launched as a sporty model with “RS” appended
to its designation. The second generation of Octavia RS followed in 2005.
To date ŠKODA has sold over 105,000 units of this compact raceabout.

RS rally cars and, in particular, the successes of the legendary ŠKODA 130 RS, which
celebrated numerous victories in the 1970s and 1980s. More than 17,600 of the first
generation Octavia RS were produced as both sedan and wagon from 2000 to 2005,
and more than 87,800 of the second generation Octavia RS ran off the production line
from 2005 to 2013. The new Octavia RS is launching in sedan and wagon versions in 2014.

2014: 40 years of the RS
The ‘RS’ has a unique history at ŠKODA as the designation for its commitment to high
performance. The designation, which according to ŠKODA historians stands for ‘Rally
Sport’, will be celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2014. The letters RS appeared for the
first time on the ŠKODA 180 RS and ŠKODA 200 RS rally cars in 1974. The 180 RS and
200 RS models were two of the brand’s most spectacular rally cars ever. The two-litre
engine with overhead camshaft technology delivered 163 hp. The transmission was made
by Porsche, and the ŠKODA 200 RS achieved a top speed of 210 km/h.
The positive experiences with the 180 RS and 200 RS, which were designed as
prototypes, led to the decision to produce a model for general racing, and the legendary
ŠKODA 130 RS was introduced in 1975. The 130 RS was one of the most successful rally
cars of its time and was a permanent fixture at rallies and circuit races until the early
1980s. The car, also known as the ‘Porsche of the East,’ racked up victories including the
1981 European Touring Car Championship and first and second place in its class
(1,300 cm3 cubic capacity) at the 1977 Rallye Monte Carlo.
113 years of motorsport tradition at ŠKODA
The successes of the ŠKODA 130 RS mark the brand’s good reputation in motorsports to
this day. The 130 RS is just one of many milestones in the brand’s 113 years of successes
in motorsports. ŠKODA’s commitment to motorsports dates back to 1901. Just five years
after founding the company, Václav Laurin and Václav Klement decided to become
involved in motorsports. In 1901, factory driver Narcis Podsedníček successfully
completed the long-distance Paris-Berlin race on a one-cylinder motorcycle. He won the
race, but was disqualified because no race officials were on hand to record his time.
Today, his success is regarded as the cornerstone of ŠKODA’s involvement in motorsports.
Over the last almost twelve decades ŠKODA has continually left strong marks on
the world of international rally sports. ŠKODA racked up wins in its early years at,
among other things, the first official motorcycle race called the “International Motor-Cycle
Cup Race” in 1905, rally wins at the Rallye Monte Carlo as well as the famous Targa Florio
and the “Mille Miglia” open-road endurance races. Only a few years after World War II
had ended, ŠKODA race cars participated in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The 130 RS was
the ultimate Czech racing car in the 1970s and 1980s.

ŠKODA gained further momentum in motorsport as well when it merged with Volkswagen
in 1991, with ŠKODA’s Favorit winning the F2 category of the World Rally Championship
in 1994. In the following years the brand raced the Octavia WRC and the Fabia WRC.
The ŠKODA Fabia Super 2000 has generated lots of attention thanks to countless successes
in international and national rally series. In particular, the brand has racked up numerous
wins in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC). At three wins in a row in 2010 to 2012

history. 2012 was the most successful year ever in ŠKODA’s motorsports history as the
brand bagged a win in the IRC as well as title wins in the European Rally Championship,
the Asian-Pacific Rally Championship (APRC) and six national rally championships.
ŠKODA continues to distinguish itself off the official rally tracks as well, such as when the
Octavia vRS Bonneville Special set a new land speed record of 365 km/h or 227 mph at
the Bonneville Speed Week in Utah’s famous Bonneville Salt Flats in 2011, making the
Octavia vRS Bonneville Special the fastest production car with a 2.0-litre, supercharged
engine. The previous record in the G/PS category was 347 km/h or 216 mph and dates
back to 1998. The Southern California Timing Association (SCTA) has officially recognised
the new record.
