Bringing forward-thinking folk together, CEDIA will be hosting a Lifestyle Technology Showcase on 11th October
2017 at The Building Centre in London. The event will be split into two sections, with the educational
programme being targeted at interior designers, architects, and property developers, while the networking
session is open to technology integrators. This will provide CEDIA members with the opportunity to develop new
and existing relationships with the design community.
This one-day event will take place from 9:30am - 7:00pm at London’s prestigious Building Centre, a venue
dedicated to promoting innovation in the built environment. It will begin with CEDIA’s RIBA and BIID accredited
CPD training course, ‘Designing Integrated Future-Ready Homes’. Following the CPD, the four event sponsors will
host a 45-minute presentation. The sponsors include GIRA, Control4, Artcoustic, and Lutron. These companies
will also be showcasing their products on a table-top exhibition space.
Towards the end of the day, CEDIA will host a session that will discuss a real life smarthome project.
Attendees will gain an understanding of how to best work with a technology integrator, and what the outcome
is when a good partnership is developed at the early stages of the project.
The event will conclude with a networking session. Technology integrators are invited to attend the drinks
reception to network and build relationships with the design community.

Controlling multiroom TV and audio with just your
voice is now a reality, thanks to HDAnywhere…
HDAnywhere understand multiroom entertainment to mean having the
ability to enjoy all of your media content in every room you wish to,
without any loss of quality and in a really easy-to-control manner. As
such, back in April the HDA uControl universal remote App was
launched, offering source and TV control via the MHUB’s integrated
IP2IR technology (with no additional control hardware required).
uControl App users can turn on the TV and control the volume, select
sources and control them, play and pause, navigate programme guides
and menus and finally turn everything off the room when leaving. All
via the free App.
Now users don’t even have to use an App to achieve control, they
can go completely hands-free and remote-free and simply use their voice
to control their home entertainment in every room, thanks to MHUB’s
new (and free) software.
HDA has released a new version of its MHUB PRO matrix operating system
called MHUB-OS (formerly known as DASH), which primarily delivers Alexa
voice control and remote management+monitoring to their MHUB PRO
systems. The new OS also encompasses improved security and establishes
the foundation for future innovation delivered via MHUB.
Unique and patented to HDA, MHUB-OS unlocks the potential of
MHUB PRO’s onboard IP>IR engine by adding macro-sequencing for
simplifying the ease and convenience of controlling TV and audio in our
homes. Go completely remote and hands-free by using single voice
commands or a uControl app ‘quick action’ buttons – triggering multiple
signals to multiple devices in sequence to deliver a desired end result,
such as switching your TV on from standby straight to your favourite
news channel in the morning, without needing to find the remote or
turning all the TVs (and source devices) off in the evening with a single
voice command.
You can also reduce the necessity for callouts and site visits with HDA’s
new remote management software. Whether at the office, Watford Gap
services or working from home, the HDA PRO Cloud dashboard offers a
secure portal to remotely monitor and manage MHUB installations
across multiple client sites. Power-cycling, software rebooting,
diagnostics, EDID changes and uControl configuration changes can all be
performed without ever having to put miles on the van.
Central to HDA’s strategy is leveraging MHUB add-on bonus
technologies and Cloud platform to enable HTPs to achieve more from a
single device. This creates more value for the end-user and creates easier
opportunities to sell additional services, and importantly manage them
in a more efficient and cost-effective way.
Chris Pinder, HDA Founder, commented: “An MHUB PRO changes
the relationship people have with TV in their homes. Voice control is a
big part of that changed relationship. We removed the box-clutter from
living spaces, now we’ve removed the remote also. Macro-sequences
create single command simplicity and the ultimate convenience, that
other brands cannot offer from a one-box solution. On the installation
side, our new remote management platform offers more real-time
functionality than ever before. This allows HDA Pros to provide
incredible service, whilst saving time and money. A genuine win-win-win
for home technology professionals and end-users alike.”
MHUB-OS is a free upgrade for MHUB PRO users and can be downloaded
by pressing the ‘Check for Updates’ button on the ‘MHUB Settings’ more
details on updating can be found at

German uber audio giant, T+A, has announced the launch of its new CALA
Receiver range, the CALA SR and CALA CDR (with CD mechanism). The ideal

or high output MC turntable input).
The chassis of both models has been crafted from aluminium for a sturdy
foundation for the electronics, whilst control comes via the supplied T+A
F100 remote control or the T+A Control app (available for Apple and Android
The CALA SR is a multi-functional streaming receiver that acts as a
complete Hi-Fi system. The model features an integrated amplifier with a
large range of connection facilities and powerful 2x 55W output stages for an
exceptional performance.
Users can access a range of supported sources, such as Internet radio
with Airable Internet Radio Service, FM, FM-HD and DAB+ radio, in addition
to in-built streaming service clients Deezer, qobuz and TIDAL. HD Bluetooth

B-Tech AV Mounts have added to
their range of pop-out mounting
solutions with the introduction of
the ultra-slim BT8312. Designed to
make video wall installations as
quick and simple as possible,
B-Tech’s latest mount can be used
to create unlimited video wall
configurations in both landscape
and portrait format.
The ultra-slim profile of the
BT8312 makes it the ideal choice for mounting into
walls with a narrow recess or when space in front of
the wall is at a premium. ADA compliance – American legislation relating
to the accessibility of electronic and information technology for people
with disabilities, states that wall mounted screens in public places must
not protrude more than 100mm from the wall. As screens get thinner,
with some sub-50mm deep models now available, the BT8312 is ideal
for meeting these regulations.
Being part of the B-Tech family of mounting solutions, the BT8312
also works perfectly as a pole mounted solution when used with the
System 2 range.
Similar to B-Tech’s ever-popular BT8310 mount, the BT8312’s popout system allows quick and easy access to the rear of mounted screens
for servicing and tool-less micro-adjustment enables easy and accurate
screen alignment. The BT8312 also features wallplate keyhole fixing,
with mounting template spacers available to eliminate time-consuming
calculations and on-site measuring.
Linn has launched its new Akubarik and Akudorik loudspeakers with immensely enhanced performance and
precision thanks to Linn’s latest digital-to-analogue conversion technology, Katalyst.
Linn's innovative integrated speakers have power and intelligence built-in. A specially designed module,
suspension-mounted on the back of each speaker houses the best of their in-house technologies to optimise
performance and give a deeper insight to music. And while every room has its own effect on music, both
systems utilise Linn’s patented Space Optimisation technology to enhance performance based on the acoustic
properties of the room and desired speaker placement.
Behind the elegant curves of the Akubarik speakers are a host of powerful technologies derived from
their flagship Klimax system, plus a few tricks of their own.
The Akubarik's bass system fires deep, powerful and controlled bass while the 3K driver array ensures
stunning clarity from mid and high frequencies. Integrated technologies work together to complete the

The stunning new MOON 240i integrated amplifier features a 50W amplifier,
moving magnet phono stage, five digital inputs, high-resolution DAC and an
OLED display.
It is MOON’s entry-level amplifier, but is probably all the amplifier that most
will ever need. With a wide choice of connectivity options, the striking 240i is
designed to be the one-box centrepiece of a music and home entertainment
The sound quality is all MOON: organic and detailed, with exceptionally
well-controlled and tuneful bass, coupled with a wide and airy soundstage.
Vinyl, CD and digital music files are all brought beautifully to life. The 240i will
even drive inefficient and complex low impedance speaker loads without
difficulty and will get the most out of any music source. Plus, for custom-install
environments, the 240i features SimLink™, RS232 and IR ports.
Controlled by MiND (MOON intelligent Network Device), this is much more
than a product. It is a way of organising, listening to, and enjoying music.
MiND technology streams music from any digital music library to the audio
system, allowing playback. The library can consist of music stored on a
computer, on a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device, or simply streamed
music from a variety of internet sources. Whatever the source, with the MOON

Electrostatic headphones, such as those made by Stax, are notoriously tricky to
drive – so much so that many amps fail to make the most of their beguiling
sonic abilities. They need more power than regular dynamic headphones,
delivered in the right way to ensure their electrostatic plates are properly
‘energised’. Most amps deliver neither the EHT (Extra High Tension) voltage nor
the required audio voltage to enable electrostatic headphones to perform at
their best.
The Pro series iESL is an unsurpassed energiser for electrostatic headphones
(and transformer-coupled stage for flagship dynamic headphones too). Driven
by either the iFi Pro iCAN or a powerful amplifier it is capable of taking
electrostatic headphones to an unprecedented level of performance.
Its defining characteristic is a transparency and an ultra-wide dynamic
range that is totally natural. Priced at £1395 (inc. VAT), the Pro iESL works with
Stax, Sennheiser Orpheus and many more. These two key elements combine

AWE Focus
AWE has announced a breakthrough in home control
platforms with the launch of Total Control 2.0 from URC…
“Total Control 2.0 is a dramatic step forward in
controls, the biggest and most substantial
platform upgrade since its launch,” says Mal
Fisher, Chief Technical Officer at AWE. “It brings
much greater flexibility, a more attractive
aesthetic and faster, higher performance
operation to create a significantly better user
experience. Combined with its series of recent
hardware innovations, this comprehensive
software update puts URC streets ahead of the
controls competition.”
Featuring a full graphical update, a new user
interface and advanced logic, Total Control 2.0
enables installers to put homeowners in charge
of their home with a seamless, intuitive and
versatile solution.
downloading to the system, loading new
programming and response time all vastly
improved. Installers can also make
adjustments and edits much more quickly
and simply, and pollinate across different
control devices in the house with ease.
Alongside the release, the extensive range
of design-led URC controllers is now also
available, via AWE. One of the major
attractions in this series is the unique 7-inch
TDC-7100 desktop controller which provides
elegant, responsive control over the system.
The TDC-7100 affords added security and
room-to-room connection benefits and also
features a camera and speaker to work
alongside the intercom system.
With Total Control 2.0, installers can personalise
their URC system using a fully customisable
colour scheme. They can also add attractive
images to help define and flavour room, scene
and background settings. Either single devices
or scenes can take preference on the interface
to meet the individual needs of homeowners.
Up to 100 scenes can be pre-programmed for
immediate access to a specific command.
Total Control 2.0 also boasts much faster speeds
for both installers and end-users, with
As well as substantial end-user benefits, URC
is directly increasing the opportunities for
installers with Accelerator 2.0, its new
software development platform. Featuring
advanced logic, very specific and complex
statements can be programmed. By
incorporating “if”, “and”, “then” and “or”
commands, the system becomes more
in-tune with the life of the homeowner.
In-built scheduling for commands on a
specific time or date increases the level of
autonomous directives completed by the
system, again demonstrating the
sophistication of the system.
Stuart Tickle, Managing Director of AWE
adds: “The team at URC have done a great
job – I love it and am sure installers and
consumers will too! Total Control 2.0 is the
single, most substantial update to any

Spread AV excellence all around your client’s crib with the finest multi-room making marvels…
Excellent entertainment shouldn’t be kept confined to one room; I
mean, as much as we love a self-contained home cinema room setup, AV should be allowed to be accessed from any room, giving
home owners the option to, say, start watching a movie in the
living room, carry on watching it while cooking in the kitchen,
keep tabs on it over the table in the dining room and, of course,
bung it on in the bathroom to finish off before bed. And the same
with audio playlists. All of which is entirely possible thanks to the
myriad of multi-room kit and caboodle now available to the savvy CI.
Indeed, with so many options available, it would be impossible to
cover them all in a magazine with finite pages. So, to that end, we’ve
kept it simple and only covered the coolest…
As a popular area for installers, AWE
has produced a number of packages
to suit the exact needs of the enduser. There are product bundles to
cover complete home cinema projects,
amp and speaker installs, HEOS home
cinema, pre/power amplification and
projectors and screens. These
packages include products from
brands, such as Epson, Denon,
Marantz, HEOS By Denon, SANUS,
KEF, URC and Philips Hue.
Including everything needed to
provide a multiroom audio solution,
the package features speakers and
audio equipment from HEOS by

Always seeking to offer extra, AWE is making
installer’s lives easier by providing a range of
home cinema, lighting, multiroom audio, and
control installation packages. These packages
are curated by the experts at AWE, and form
the building blocks of simple or wider
residential systems. The packages are proven
and therefore simplify the entire sales,
specification and installation process.
With different variants of packages
available for application areas, there are
product combinations suitable for projects of
all sizes. Stuart Tickle, Managing Director of
AWE, comments: “We know how busy installers
are, and by creating these hand selected
packages, we aim to make the product
specification, installation and support process
more time efficient. The technology included
in the packages represents leading brands in
the home technology field, and they have been
grouped together to ensure optimum
performance, with proven compatibility giving
peace of mind.”
Leading home technology company, Art
Of Integration, has recently benefitted from
the product packages on offer from AWE.
Co-Founder, Adam Wolfe comments: “Each
product package available includes highquality equipment that helps to deliver a true
home cinema, audio or controlled experience.
For installers, the sales and procurement
process is drastically sped up, enabling the

Core Brands released the Auriel 2.0 back in 2014, back then it was a
new major platform update that seen the addition of streaming audio,
climate and lighting control, plus remote access features. Since then the

additions to the system. Auriel 2.1’s improvement see some intuitive
user interface updates including a new Media Tab window, with larger

one to group zones ‘on the fly’ with any Auriel interface.
Auriel 2.1 also adds dozens of performance improvements, AVR
updates and several new Home Control drivers to help provide that
elegant flexibility you’ve come to expect from Niles Auriel.

progression for Auriel to expand into smart home control. Conveniently,
the new software update enables any existing Auriel system to easily
upgrade to the additional control features, so everyone wins.
Lighting control devices and wireless thermostats now connect to
the Auriel Controller, making the Niles Auriel MRC-6430 a complete,
powerful, and convenient home automation controller. Auriel 2.1
delivers simple access to lighting scenes and climate scheduling with a
few simple clicks on a Niles handheld remote (HR200), wall-mounted

which cuts configuration time to just minutes instead of hours. Using a
mobile, tablet or PC, the installer goes through simple steps that quickly

Providing more options for integrators and their clients, Auriel 2.1 now
has Tune In, Deezer, Tidal and other popular internet radio services built

made it an industry favourite,” McKeon added. “With the ELAN engine

speakers with its powerful built-in Class D amplification, or will work with a mix of both
wired and wireless speakers. The HEOS AVR delivers the high quality performance
expected with any AV receiver.
Offering up to 5.1 channel top-class surround sound, with the simple setup and
operation of a soundbar, the HEOS AVR has it all – simplicity, extraordinary sound and a
high class, minimalist appearance. This new product, which has been developed with the
idea of ‘surround yourself with sound, not wires’, is available exclusively to custom install
market via AWE.
With its sleek, slim line design, the Denon HEOS AVR doesn’t look like a
conventional AV receiver. Constructed with simplicity in mind, the HEOS AVR is ultrasimple to set up and use. The cleverly designed HEOS app leads the user through the
configuration process to integrate the HEOS AVR into your whole home music system
and achieve effortless surround sound.
As well as delivering TV shows and movies in thrilling surround sound, the HEOS
AVR can stream music from a home computer or online services like Deezer, Napster,
Spotify Connect and Tidal for limitless entertainment.
The HEOS Bar delivers exceptional performance that effortlessly enhances the audio
performance of a TV, while also taking music to an entirely new level in a sound bar. Like
all HEOS products, this model not only plays music from the customer’s own library, but
also directly from a phone via Bluetooth and via streaming services. Simply connect to
your TV with HDMI and utilise the audio return channel (ARC) for a simple, powerful
solution. Add on the optional HEOS Subwoofer and wireless surround sound to complete
a wire free, 5.1 system.
The HEOS Bar is not just a superb TV soundbar, with state-of-the-art signal
processing, amplification and drivers, but it’s also a complete music-streaming solution,
which is able to integrate into a HEOS multiroom system. It’s a three-channel design,
suitable for screens over 50-inches and able to be used on a shelf or wall-mounted. The
Bar uses nine high-performance drivers in a 45° configuration to spread sound around
the room.
The same Denon DSP technology used in Denon’s award-winning AVRs is also
included in the wireless soundbar to create impressive virtual surround sound. Dolby
True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio processing ensures the HEOS Bar will sound as good
as those 4K pictures look.
Meanwhile, the new HEOS Subwoofer is
designed to work in perfect harmony with the
entire HEOS range, from wireless speakers to the
new Bar and AVR products, as well as and the
HEOS Amp/HEOS Link to add a powerful, deep
bass to any set-up. One scenario for installers to
maximise the benefits would be to use a HEOS
amp running ceiling speakers, and then simply
adding a HEOS Subwoofer to achieve a roomfilling system. This wireless subwoofer is
beautifully crafted with a stylish matt black finish
in a slim line package that can be used vertically
or horizontally, allowing it to perfectly fit the
personal specification of the room.
Two custom-made 5¼-inch (13.5cm) drive
units combine with sophisticated Class D
amplification to deliver clean, room-shaking bass.
Advanced digital signal processing optimises the
sound for each HEOS configuration, and there
are also detailed settings available for more
confident users – all accessed by the HEOS app
that makes set-up simple. System integration
features in the app provide a factory-optimised
option for each configuration, as well as
advanced settings for users that want more

For Denny Hamlin it’s never a problem
remembering where he parked
When it comes to using
smart tech, the ball is in
Denny’s court now
Used to life in the fast lane, US NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin decided it was time to bring his home right up
to speed too…
Denny Hamlin is an American stock car racing driver with a need for
speed. When he’s not competing in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series, he’s enjoying
his new Lake Norman, North Carolina 30,000-square foot residence that
features an indoor basketball court, bowling alley, race and golf simulator,
home theatre, helicopter pad, and more.
During the home’s building process in late 2016, Hamlin wanted to
incorporate one central interface to control all his home’s sub-systems and
sophisticated entertainment technology. After a recommendation from
Thompson Custom Home Builder, he called on local technology integration firm
Interactive Interiors to design a fast and reliable automation system to meet his
many objectives. “Denny Hamlin is familiar with control because he had used a
different system in a past home, but wasn’t happy with the complexity of the
interface and the issues that kept arising,” Brian Berg, President of Interactive
Interiors said. “He asked me to install the most reliable and easiest to use
system on the market, and I confidently suggested ELAN.”
The Interactive Interiors team built the residence’s entire smarthome
infrastructure on an ELAN Entertainment & Control System. The installed
system included two ELAN gSC10 controllers, four ELAN g1 controllers, two
ELAN S1616A Multi-Zone Audio Controllers, and one ELAN gMV1616
UltraMatrix Switcher, accessible via 12 ELAN 7-inch touch panels and 16 ELAN
remotes. Hamlin also installed the ELAN app on his smartphone for remote use
while on the road. He can now control the home’s lighting, 32 zones of audio,
video, and security, from anywhere at any time.
“Interactive interiors did a phenomenal job to quickly and efficiently install
ELAN into the home,” said Ted Thompson, President of Thompson Custom
Home Builder. “Sometimes, programmers work for months on end when
implementing a smarthome infrastructure of this size and magnitude. But the
installation process and the system configuration was totally seamless.”
With ELAN at the helm, the Interactive Interiors team designed an
extensive entertainment system on a whole-home Ubiquiti wireless network for
Hamlin to enjoy during his time off the racetrack. Throughout the spacious
Prepare to be bowled over
by this tech upgrade
residence, they installed 24 Samsung 60-inch televisions, both indoors and
outdoors, as well as a Samsung 88-inch curved screen TV in the home’s central
media room.
They also built and designed a central home theatre, complete with a 110-inch
matte white projection screen with a black velvet frame, and an accompanying
Sony SXRD Projector equipped with 4K Ultra HD resolution at a 16:9 ratio. “We
worked closely with the custom cabinet builder to create 55-inch panels
surrounding the theatre screen so that Hamlin can watch five independent
channels at the same time, which is ideal for enjoying different races or games
simultaneously,” Berg said. “Together, we also designed a custom wood frame
around the screen with embedded Lutron lighting, all of which is automated
through the ELAN system.”
Incorporating custom design elements with the home’s technology was
common throughout the installation process. Interactive Interiors worked
closely with interior designer Scott Carpenter to integrate unique accents to
shield or show technology on a case-by-case basis.
“Denny wanted the overall design aesthetic to be clean, simple and
contemporary,” Carpenter explained. “In addition to the unique architectural
and design elements we incorporated, we also played with technology to
achieve our goal. We installed custom-built LED lighting strips across many of
the home’s moldings, especially for the home’s art gallery wall.”
According to Carpenter, technology absolutely impacts design and it is
therefore important to use it in a way that enhances – rather than inhibits –
creativity. “All of the home’s components need to fit together like a puzzle,” he
said. “We really were able to use the technology, and the instant and
automatic control, to accentuate particular elements that we wanted to
Hamlin also wanted a reliable and extensive security system to protect his
family and his property while on the road. Interactive Interiors integrated a
Holovision doorbell, intercom and camera at the front door into the ELAN
system, enabling Hamlin to check in on the front door from anywhere in the
home, or the world. A whole-home indoor and outdoor GE security system was
integrated into the system for maximum protection.
Thus far, Hamlin is thrilled with his new smart home and hasn’t
experienced any of the previous problems he had with automation. “Denny
really wanted to be able to control all of the home’s elements without fuss or
complication,” Thompson said. “I would absolutely recommend that builders,
integrators and homeowners use ELAN when they are looking for seamless
“ELAN ties all of my home’s components together and makes them
accessible from anywhere in the world,” said Hamlin. “I couldn’t be happier
with how the system turned out.”

Supra’s award winning LoRad shielded mains cables
have been available for over 10-years, and in this time
many kilometres of cable has been sold to both
domestic and commercial customers. And people have
noticed noticeable improvements, as you would expect.
Now, Supra are launching two new LoRad
accessory products: The Mark 3 LoRad Mains
Distribution Blocks and the LoRad DC-Blocker.
The new mains blocks, (which replace the original
Supra UK blocks launched back in 2007), are made in
Supra’s own factory in Ljungskile, Sweden and have a
range of features: aluminium chassis, 16 Amp High
Current inlet sockets (much better than the 10-Amp
standard IEC), Non-Intrusive Filtering and optionally,
Supra’s own design of Surge-Protection. Needless to
say, BS Approval has been granted, so these mains
blocks will NOT invalidate your customers’ buildings or
contents insurance.
The standard versions will come with 6, 8 or 11
sockets, while the “SP” models will be available in 6, 8
and 10 ways. Special orders can also be accepted for 2,
3 or 4 way versions.
The DC-Blocker is a nifty accessory if you are
unfortunate to have any low voltage DC on your
incoming AC mains supply. This device, when plugged
in between your wall socket and the plug to your mains
distribution block (or a specific piece of equipment) will
block up to 3.6V DC from entering the hardware and
hence this can lead to reduced transformer ‘buzz’ and
an overall improvement in dynamics.
Samples of both products will be on show at both
the forthcoming Indulgence Show (September 29th October 1st), London, and Home Hi-Fi Show (October
21st - 22nd), Harrogate.
Two new TruSound speaker cables were added to the FS Cables range
earlier this year, designed specifically for outdoor use. Stocked in 16/4
and 16/2 (4 core and 2 core 16AWG) configurations, this cable
incorporates a clever water blocking tape to prevent water from
travelling down the length of the cable and degrading its performance.
The tape is dry, fibrous and impregnated with a compound that, when
in contact with moisture, swells to form a jelly that seals gaps or
interstices within the cable. This prevents the build-up of water droplets
that could accumulate and change the electrical characteristics.
Easy to terminate with no messy jelly, the TruSound
weatherproof tape remains dry and almost paper-like in normal
use. It also removes the need for talcum that is used in
conventional cables to improve
flexibility and ease stripping.
The TruSound external
weatherproof speaker cable features a
UV stable, black PE outer jacket – ideal
for use in exposed applications. The
cable is light and easy to handle.
Like all speaker cables in the
TruSound range, the weatherproof
version uses oxygen-free copper (OFC)
conductors. This is a high purity copper
that has been refined to minimise oxygen
content and optimise performance.
Stocked on 100-, 200- and 500-metre
reels or cut-to-length, meaning you only
order what you need, reducing both costs
and wastage.
FS Cables also offer 16AWG, 14AWG
and 12AWG speaker cables in PVC or
LSHF, parallel twin and multicore round
speaker cables, as well as foil screen
twisted pair audio cable.

Launched as part of Supra’s 40th anniversary celebrations this
year, the XL Annorum is a high-end loudspeaker cable, with a
name that derives from playing with Roman numerals and
language, where XL means ‘40’ and Annorum is a bent form of
‘Anno’, the Latin for year, hence ‘40 Years’.
The original intention was for a conductor for the internal wiring
of drivers and cross-over filters. During the development Supra saw
such good performance that the idea of having the conductors
forming a complete speaker cable came to life.
The design is a 4x 1.6sq. mm shaped lead configuration, where each
conductor comprises a plastic core around which 12 strands 5N oxygen-free
copper which are spun in a tight pitch. This minimises skin-effect and
inductance efficiently and by choosing the sonically benign PolyPropylene
di-electric (as insulation) this helps prevent corrosion and material fatigue,
year after year.
Standard fittings are Supra CombiCon Crimp bodies, with either
Banana/BFA tips or Spade connectors. However, it is also available off-thereel for those who wish to terminate the cable themselves.
The XL Annorum will retail at £40 per linear metre (unterminated) with
factory terminated cables set (fitted with Supra CombiCon Crimp
connectors) starting at £320 for a two-metre pair of shotgun wired cables.
Biwired cables start at £350 per two-metre set (reflecting the higher
number of connecters required) and Bi-Amp terminated cables start at £380
per two-metre set. Longer lengths are available in one-metre increments.
Supra cables and accessories are distributed within the UK and Ireland by
Wavelength Distribution.
Consistency of performance is guaranteed with the introduction of the
Atlas Cables Element Superior. Although an entry-level product within
the Atlas Cables range of analogue RCA cables, the Element Superior
offers termination technology that bellies its affordable price. Thanks to
the continuation of the company’s research into ‘cold-weld’ crimping and
its significant advantages over solder terminations, the Element Superior
is the first Atlas cable to feature 100% calibrated compression fittings for
both the signal and the return conductors. This major advance in cable
building technology results in the signal not changing its characteristic in
any way, ensuring the cable’s Ohno Continuous Cast (OCC) conductor
Supra offer factory terminated XL Annorum cables:
n In shotgun configuration, (i.e. ‘2 to 2’) with all of the
conductors being ‘paired’ at both ends. This effectively
doubles the number of strands carrying the signal to the
speaker and in some cases may be preferred to
n Wired for bi-wiring, in ‘2 to 4’ configuration (cables are
‘paired’ at the amplifier end, but are terminated
separately at the speaker end).
n They can also supply these cables for bi-amp use, with
the cables configured in ‘4 to 4’ mode, with each
conductor being terminated separately at both ends.
can be perfectly terminated to the low-mass non-conductive Integra
RCA plugs, delivering minimal signal deletions for maximum highfidelity.
Completing the cable design, the OCC conductors sit within
stabilised foamed Polyethylene dielectric for greater bandwidth, and the
cable is finished with a pearl-silver Polyethylene outer.
Hand-built at its manufacturing plant in Kilmarnock, Scotland, the
Atlas Cables Element Superior is available now in lengths of 0.5-, 0.75-,
1.0- and 2.0-metres, with bespoke lengths available upon request.

Bringing on new brands and being Berlin-bound, SVI’s jaunting Geordie,
DAVE SLATER, brings us the latest from INSIDE CI…
This month, DSE have been busy taking on new brands, and we are
proud to now have a Bang & Olufsen pro account which allows us to
sell some of the exciting range of speakers that have just been
launched. One such product is the BeoLab 50, a high-end active
loudspeaker developed from the brand’s £58,000 flagship BeoLab 90.
Beautifully crafted, the brand says the bottom part of the speaker has been
designed to visually lift the speaker from the floor to keep its footprint is
relatively small, and there are 2100W of power available from the on-board
The BeoLab 50 is set-up using Active Room Compensation technology.
A mic measures the physical acoustic surroundings and applies
compensation filters to produce an optimum sound performance. Acoustic
Lens Technology on the top of the speaker handles the sound dispersion of
the upper frequencies. When the BeoLab 50 is switched on, the lens moves
into position. This disperses the sound via Beam Width Control into either a
180-degree sound mode for watching a movie, or to a narrow mode for a
dedicated sweet-spot listening.
BeoLab 50s are interconnected via Digital Power Link in a master-slave
configuration with sound sources being fed into the system via the master
speaker’s connection panel. As a supplement to the wired connection, the
speaker also incorporates wireless technology using multichannel digital
audio streaming (based on the WiSA technology).
The next product that I think is a winner is the BeoSound Shape which is a
wall-mounted, modular speaker that features a hexagonal tile design which
can be placed in any configuration and size. A combination of speaker,
amplifier and acoustic damper tile, it can be arranged in designs of six and
up, and tailored to complement any interior design. A variety of colours and
textiles are available, including Parisian Night Blue, Purple Heart, Infantry
Green, Brazilian Clay, Wild Dove Grey and Black. A collaboration with
Danish textile manufacturer Kvadrat adds additional wool fabrics and
Literally a wall of sound, Bang & Olufsen suggests that the speaker
is ideal for large residential spaces, shops, studios, showrooms, offices and
hotel lobbies. The system supports Bluetooth, AirPlay and Chromecast. It’s
also compatible with Bang & Olufsen and B&O Play multiroom products.

and HDCP 2.2 enabled, while the other is audio-only v1.4, used to route
bitstream audio to home cinema receivers which predate the 4K resolution
There are two USB ports, one front facing, the other on the rear. There are
no stereo analogue outputs, these being reserved for its step-up stablemate.
Instead there’s a single digital audio coax. The deck supports dual-band Wi-Fi
and Bluetooth, with high-headroom LDAC for those with compatible Sony
smartphones. It also supports Bluetooth pairing with wireless headphones,
which is a nice touch. An Ethernet connection allows conventional hard-wired
This player also proves a great music source. If you have Super Audio CD and
DVD-A discs, it’ll breathe new life into your collection; multichannel audio over
HDMI sounds ludicrously good. The player offers precision, and finds space
between instruments, even on complex jazz mixes. It can be considered a solid
partner for top flight AV receivers.

IFA Berlin is just around the corner, as I write, and while there I’ll be
checking out the Samsung stand where it will be unveiling its largest QLED
TV yet. The giant Q9 offers HDR 10 and Samsung’s proprietary HDR10+
image technology. The US list price is a modest $20,000. To simplify
installation, the set comes with an ‘invisible’ fibre optic cable which allows
the panel to be effectively separated from sound system and tuner.
Sony often has one of the biggest IFA stands. In 2016 it used the show
to launch its ZD9 television. It’s still ranging the ZD9 in 2017, the only
model about which there’s been no talk of an update for. Perhaps we’ll see
a new flagship LED TV from Sony at IFA 2017. Another great product we have been playing with is the Sony UBPX800 UHD 4K Blu-ray player. The player embraces an industrial design first
seen on the 2K UHP-H1. Here we have an uprated Frame and Beam chassis
design, which adds internal rigidity with 1.2mm struts. Flip the player over,
and you’ll see that Sony has also used two extruded beams to link the

Manners maketh the man, or at the very least keep your customers coming. PHIL HANSEN
looks at the essential importance of maintaining a good retail relationship…
I’ve been reading some of the posts on one of
the Hi-Fi forums regarding aggressive sales
people within retailers. Wow, to think that in
our little industry, run by and for enthusiasts,
there could be rude staff who treat the
customer with contempt! Surely there’s something
wrong here, we can’t possibly have people who
deride customers’ choice of music, laugh at their lack
of knowledge or have stand up arguments with
them in the shop, can we? Sounds like a sketch from
“Not the Nine O’Clock News”!
The renowned management consultant and
author, Tom Peters (and many others), proclaimed:
“The Customer is King”. Great sentiments on the
surface, but what does that actually mean?
According to an article in Fortune magazine, 80% of
executives think they’re doing an excellent job in the
way they serve customers, whilst only 8% of their
customers agree! The executive is more often than
not obsessed with maximising shareholder value and
that leads to short-term measures. Stock the
products you think the customer wants, aggressively
promote them, go for customer throughput and as
a result increase the turnover. Oh, and don’t
forget to smile when you serve them, because
that’s what the poster in the staff room tells you
to do! This customer service stuff is easy! The
same article in Fortune magazine states that the
average company loses more than half its customers
every four years.
The article is really talking about big business but it also applies very much to
our industry. What’s going on here is delivery of perceived value (by the
business) and not real value (as viewed by the customer). Sure, it will increase
the earnings per share for the business, but it’s unsustainable. Focus on the
real issues, such as the latest products, customer satisfaction and ensuring
there is repeat business and the earnings for the shareholders will increase
and it will also be sustainable. This means really understanding your
customers’ needs and fulfilling them to their satisfaction.
Build up a relationship with your customers, get to know them, what
makes them tick, what do they really want to satisfy their needs. Learn how
to turn those wants into desires. Spend time with them, be patient, listen to
them and if they’re not too sure how to proceed offer them the benefit of
your expertise. Treat them the way you would like to be treated when you
buy a product you only know a little about. Treat them like valued friends.
It’s better to assist
potential customers with
audio advice... rather
than abuse them!
Why not invest in a customer relationship
management system? They can greatly enhance your
chances of winning repeat business. It’s an old
adage, but still true to this day (probably more so)
that it costs 10 times as much to get a new
customer as it does to keep existing ones. A CRM
system (and many of the widely used retail
information systems include basic CRM functionality)
can be a very powerful tool. Use it to store data
about your customers’ systems, when they last
purchased, how much they spent and what they
perhaps expressed an interest in buying next. Track
their buying patterns and use this information to
promote your business to them. If you can see
it’s been 10-years since they bought a stylus
then maybe it’s time to give them a call! Why
not send them a birthday card each year to
remind them of your existence?
Above all else, remember you are a specialist and as such your expert
knowledge is a very powerful tool. Don’t misuse it and ridicule the customer’s
lack of knowledge, Rowan Atkinson-style, instead use it to help your
customers. Guide them to the solution that will satisfy their particular needs
and use the skills you’ve learned to show them the benefits of the next
model up. Sales objectives (i.e. upselling) and good customer service needn’t
be mutually exclusive. Handled well you can gain the respect of your
customers for having allowed them to discover for themselves the advantages
of buying the better product, even though they’ve spent more money than
they intended!
We work in a very small industry, with many pressures on consumers to
spend money on other things. We simply can’t afford to treat our customers
poorly – they are our life blood, so look after them. Get it right and you’ll
have a customer for many years, get it wrong and you’ll have to constantly
look for replacements.

Serious Audio/Video
turned to ELAN to
keep control smart
yet simple
Putting the ‘new’ in New Jersey, Serious Audio/Video and ELAN bring a family home into the future…
Homebuyers often speak about moving in
romanticised terms, calling a new house their
‘dream home’ or their ‘forever home’. Today, a
major factor in creating a forever home is making
the residence as usable and comfortable as possible
with advanced home automation. That was exactly
the case for one New Jersey family that decided it
was time to join the future of home living by
installing a fully-integrated ELAN Entertainment &
Control System after dabbling with small-scale
automation in their previous home.
“The entry-level control system in the family’s last
home only managed their lighting and HVAC,” said
Casey S. Johnston of Union City, New Jersey-based
Serious Audio/Video. “When the family decided to
move, they wanted a complete home control system
that was easy enough for their kids to use, and
comprehensive enough to keep the family secure.
They hired us to give them a new idea of what home
life can be like with a powerful, yet simple ELAN
system to automate and control the home’s lighting,
HVAC, security, surveillance, multi-room audio and
video, and motorised window shades.”
One of the core requirements for this family’s
new smarthome was that the technology be easy
enough for their children or guests to operate
simple functions. Using only three ELAN HR200
remotes plus the ELAN app on a few iPhones and
iPads, the family has full, immediate control over all
of the home’s technology. With ultra-simple
navigation in the ELAN app, the family can easily
adjust any system in almost every room.
The rooftop deck features a 65-inch Seura TV
Johnston and his team at Serious Audio/Video
installed six zones of audio with four zones of
video, and integrated the ELAN system with nearly
every light and window shade in the home. Now,
each room is a customisable space where family
members can dial in the perfect music volume or
the desired amount of light. This is critically
important for areas like the living room, where an
OLED 4K TV and in-wall surround sound system
offers a movie-theatre-style viewing experience.
“It may seem small,” Johnston continued,
“but it is truly remarkable to have the ability to sit
on the couch, then without getting up, turn on
the TV and stereo, lower the blinds, turn up the
heat and raise the volume, all from a mobile app.
It completely changes how people interact with
their home’s technology and increases the
enjoyment of a room by offering maximum control
and comfort.”
The centrepiece of the home’s customisation
is the rooftop deck. Here the family can enjoy a
65-inch Seura outdoor TV with a multi-room
audio system, a fire pit, and a full outdoor kitchen
and dining set. The system’s speakers are
completely hidden in a small gap between the
deck and the actual roof, creating a seamless
audiovisual experience in a unique location.
Besides offering premier entertainment, the ELAN
system is also helping the family to monitor and
All AV, HVAC, security and shades are controlled via ELAN
reduce their electricity usage with a pre-set
lighting schedule and occupancy sensors that
ensure that lights aren’t left on in uninhabited
rooms. “It was important that, in addition to
control, the homeowners could monitor their
systems for efficiency,” Johnston added.
While ELAN was chosen for its ease-of-use,
the homeowners didn’t want their kids having
total control. So the pros at Serious Audio Video
placed limits on what the kids have access to on
their mobile devices, giving them control of their
bedrooms and TVs, but not security, surveillance,
scheduling or select TV/music content. And to
ensure everything runs smoothly and is free
from prying eyes or hands, the team at Serious
Audio Video housed all the equipment in a
lockable rack cabinet in an out-of-the-way
“We try to think of everything,” Johnston
concluded. “Our goal with every project is to
maximise the homeowners’ usability and
enjoyment from their high-tech systems. With
ELAN we know that our customers will get the
most for their money and for their time, since
it’s by far the easiest interface to learn among
leading home control systems. We love helping
create unique spaces like the roof deck in this
home, and helping families spend more time
together through automated home functions.
Home control is the future, and we’re proud to
deliver it daily.”

Sanus has come to the rescue of installers
and end-users looking for a way of
securing their streaming media boxes
behind a wall-mounted TV with the new
SASP1 Streaming Device Panel, available
now at £19.99.
With the advent of small media boxes,
such as Apple TV, Tivo, Amazon Fire or Roku, the
installer has had to find methods of securing these behind the TV, usually
unsatisfactorily using multiple tie-wraps and hook and loop fasteners that
just about hold the box in place. The development team at Sanus has come
up with a beautifully simple but effective solution to the problem that is
compatible with any mount. The Streaming Device Panel is a perforated
metal plate that affixes to a Sanus TV mount without screws or to any
other mount or directly to the rear of the TV with a simple screw fixing.
Using the provided straps, streaming devices and other TV accessories
can be discreetly and securely mounted to the panel, out of sight behind
the TV. Designed to hold most small devices up to 1.3 kg, it easily attaches
to a SANUS full-motion or tilting mount, such as the VLT6, VLF613, VLF628
or VMF620, slides in from side and held in place with a bayonet fitting – no
screws are needed.
Commenting on the launch, Rick van Bommel, senior international
marketing and product manager, said: “The forward-thinking team in the
Sanus R&D department have once again come up with an elegant and
useful solution to a real-world problem: where to position the Apple TV or
Amazon Fire? It is always an issue; often poorly solved using tie-fasteners,
double sided tape and other unsatisfactory solutions. The new Streaming
Devices Panel makes a safe, secure and hidden installation possible in just a
few minutes and we feel sure it’s going to be a very useful addition to the
installer’s tool kit.”
The SASP1 is available now from Sanus retailers and installers.

Exclusively for SVI, MATT NIMMONS, MD at CEDIA, discusses how CEDIA can help integrators
assure homeowners that they’ve got the best person for the job…
With smarthomes becoming increasingly popular and no longer
perceived as a luxury for the super-rich, products are now readily
available and affordable to a wider audience. Intelligent technology
systems are reaching consumers daily, with more than half owning some form
of connected device for their home. Now, more than ever, homeowners are
becoming increasingly aware of how integrated smarthome technology can
benefit day-to-day life.
With this broadened range of customers comes the increasing demand
and search for trustworthy, reliable and knowledgeable integrators that stand
out from the crowd to do the job right and do it well.
These days, consumers do a lot more research before hiring a professional,
whether the job is for a plumber, electrician, builder, or technology integrator.
When they find the type of professional they are looking for, they then delve
a bit deeper to see what certifications they hold, whether they are members
of the industry associations, if they have won any industry awards, and what
other badges of honour they hold. This is a time-consuming task, but your
potential clients go through this process, so it means that you need to proudly
display this type of information on your marketing material.
The good news is, CEDIA members are in the prime-position to be at the
top of the list, as they have access to regular education, a prestigious awards
scheme, and now, a new tool kit full of useful logos. The newly released
CEDIA tool kit includes a new set of CEDIA Certification logos for all levels
of accreditation, including: CEDIA Electronic Systems Certified (ESC), CEDIA
Certified Technician (ESC-T), CEDIA Certified Networking Specialist (ESC-N),
and CEDIA Certified Designer (ESC-D). It also provides access to digital badges
through BadgeCert. Using this programme, digital certification badges can
easily be added to email signatures, LinkedIn accounts, websites, and other
social media platforms. Clicking on a digital badge also allows clients to verify
the current status and expiration date of an individual certification, enabling
them to see what knowledge and skills it represents.
In addition to the new logos and the digital badge programme, each member
also receives marketing collateral that outlines why a homeowner should hire
a CEDIA Certified professional. All these elements will help to showcase the
achievements accomplished and the level of professionalism to consumers.
Individuals interested in pursuing CEDIA certifications can find out more
about each certification, the suggested course requirements, and the job task
analysis at Certification review sessions as well as
exams will be available at CEDIA 2017.

Basically, CYP is an AV company that supplies the ‘glue’ between a source and
a display. As a very wide-ranging company, all of our products have been
designed to work across a wide-range of applications and environments, with
reliability and performance always being the primary concern. Our experience
in AV signal distribution and reliability is vast and we have been involved with
HDMI signal distribution since the beginning and were early adopters of
HDBaseT technology, meaning we have significant knowledge of the platform.
The CYP product range includes everything from HDMI cabling solutions
and switches through to our wide-range of HDBaseT extenders and matricies,
conferencing solutions, video wall display drivers and a full range of what we
call ‘get out of jail’ accessories.
We are fastidious about delivering products that not only work to spec but that
also feature the latest technology in a very reliable form. We have a team here
in the UK that listens to real-world feedback from our customers and then
proposes new products in-line with demand. Combined with our 100-strong
team of development engineers at our facility in Taiwan, we can move quickly
yet still maintain the high-levels of reliability crucial for our customers.
As a major HDBaseT partner, we also work closely with the HDBaseT
Alliance to make sure that our products deliver the best possible performance
the platform is capable of, as well as run real-world testing prior to release.
A big part of CYP’s service offering is education and we have invested
heavily in our training programmes, so that installers have the knowledge
required to create class-leading AV distribution systems in true 4K quality.
The nature of custom installation is that every install is different. This means
that no matter how hard we try to incorporate every feature that is required,
there are times when our customers require additional support for their
designs. Because we have such a close link with our R&D team, we are able to
help our customers very quickly with any issues that might arise and offer sitevisits as part of our service commitment.
We are constantly exploring the latest in IP HDBaseT and other associated AV
technologies along with developing reliable industry standard solutions. In
some respects, we are at the mercy of the display manufactures who are
driving the technology forward, so we have to adjust to the demands to satisfy
the consumer and installer. This requires constant education and support for
the market, along with nurturing relationships with display manufactures for
the latest insights, which is what we are very good at.
Through development of the technology, we have developed products that
overcome many of the challenges met by the installer. Being one of the first to
introduce HDBaseT technology into the industry, we are leading the way with
the latest technology innovations and the ability to cope with the demand of
true UHD 4K HDR signals. We are very excited about future product
developments that will be released in the coming months.

Tasked with a minimalist, yet
mind-numbingly advanced
integration, Inspired Dwellings
rose to the challenge and
Minimalist, cool and calm, but
also utterly state-of-the-art
Situated in a tranquil marina, it could be difficult to justify a modern
retrofit project that’s bustling with technology in such a peaceful and
picturesque setting. However, using the combination of expert technology
design and installation precision, CEDIA member Inspired Dwellings Ltd was
able to discreetly integrate a state-of-the-art home technology system into the
property’s serene environment.
Inspired Dwellings Ltd was presented with a brief with oxymoron
tendencies; a sophisticated home technology system that is ideal for
entertaining guests yet is discreet and blends seamlessly with the minimalistic
design of the existing property and serene location. An avid sailor and
businessman, the client is often away from home and also required a home
control system that could be easily accessed remotely for security purposes.
Although requesting a high-tech spec throughout, the client wanted to
make the home as minimalistic as possible, mirroring the theme of the calm
water scene just on their doorstep. To achieve this, meticulous planning went
into choosing each piece of technology to ensure the smart control needs of
the client were met.
SONOS audio zones make
workouts more entertaining
Eluding a chilled atmosphere by day, the main communal spaces easily
transform into entertainment mode by night. Using multiple SONOS audio
zones, the client is able to play different music in various parts of the house,
including the open-plan kitchen, gym and Jacuzzi area via in-ceiling speakers.
All music is controlled via a Control4 touch panel that is accessible for residents
and guests alike. Using the same Control4 system, the lighting can be
controlled to create the ideal breakfast or evening entertainment ambience
with pre-programmed settings.
At first glance, the media and reception room on the second floor provides
a relaxing setting for the owner, complete with impressive views of the marina.
Yet at the touch of a button, the room transforms into a fully-fledged media
room. Using the Control4 remote, a JVC projector on a motorised Future
Automation lift and a Screen International projector screen inconspicuously
A Bowers & Wilkins speaker system was installed to deliver an immersive
audio experience. Without leaving any stone unturned, Inspired Dwellings Ltd

The entertainment continues outside with a high-tech Jacuzzi that includes
colour changing lights. The outside terrace features waterproof outdoor
in-ceiling speakers from Bowers & Wilkins, which can be controlled via the
Control4 touch panel or any iOS device using the Control4 app.
Remote access and a dependable security system were key elements of the
specification, due to the client’s frequent travels. LILIN CCTV cameras were
installed to let the client monitor the property remotely, wherever they are in
the world. A door entry system was also installed to allow the client to see
who is outside the property and access the door entry system anywhere within
the property or externally.
Network Video Recorders
Inspired Dwellings Ltd installed a Control4 system that integrates all home
technology – lighting, AV, door entry and CCTV – into one simple and
manageable system for the client.
This project was no mean feat for Inspired Dwellings, and resulted in the
CEDIA member winning Best Integrated Home Under £100,000 at the CEDIA
Awards 2016.

have a negative impact on the
design. These spaces are often
acoustically harsh and the VPT
(Vibrational Panel Technology)
performs well in such applications.
Additionally historical buildings
wanting an authentic look and
feel combined with the latest
technology are enhanced by the
presence of invisible sound
whether behind plaster or other
materials such as wood or
wood veneer.
