When it comes down to it, just about everything in the print
industry is about making printed products more attractive and
increasing sales. In high-end magazines and printed advertising,
corporate brochures and packaging, the trend is increasingly
towards versatile finishing systems, such as spot varnishing, foil
laminating or intelligent post-press-processing.
This is a growth market, especially in packaging. This new technology must, increasingly, be integrated into the normal print
process. BALDWIN meets these rising demands on sheetfed
print machines with innovative machinery and consumables.

Long-run magazines, catalogues and printed advertising have to compete
increasingly against electronic media. To do this, conventional print media,
like magazines and catalogues, are becoming increasingly target-group
oriented, which means shorter runs, make-readies and tighter production
windows. To meet these dynamic web offset market conditions, presses are
getting wider, faster and more automated and BALDWIN process automation
and consumable solutions are setting the new standards required to meet
this increasingly demanding print process.

Where
RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT
set
the standards in productivity and environmental efficiency
It is both an obligation and a challenge to optimise our systems, consumables and process
know-how and to better understand how we can unlock greater synergies within the entire
print process, while also improving the environmental efficiency of the offset printing
process. We therefore see our continued investment in innovation through research &
development as being a critical commitment and core component of our plan to ensure
the future success of our company by bringing greater values to our customers.

Small changes, big impact
As we know from our experience, making
even minor changes to print parameters
can have a major impact on other system
components involved. Our research &
development departments look at the
print process as a whole, and take into
consideration all the processes and
materials.
Step by step to success
In developing new products, extensive
testing is essential: because each product
must work smoothly on different
printing presses and under the widest
possible range of conditions.
Qualified specialists in physics, chemistry,
electronics, software development,
mechanical engineering and print
technology work together at BALDWIN
to ensure optimal results. Research &
development always starts by meeting
a market or customer need, and it is
quite common to find our interdisciplinary teams working with universities
on truly fundamental research.
As they progress, we build a pilot
plant and conduct extensive testing
of products in a wide range of target
markets and print applications worldwide: only after this intensive process
will a new development be released to
market and into full production. Once
commissioned, we assist in optimising
each unit, taking into account the
individual conditions of our markets
and customers.
Why spend so much? To ensure our
customers are satisfied long-term.
Because we make sure that each of the
individual components within our
comprehensive product portfolio will
work with one another perfectly and
deliver the decisive synergies needed
to ensure the highest value and a fast
return on investment.
14 Sustainability
SUSTAINABILITY
is good for your business
BALDWIN is committed to developing equipment, systems and consumables that combine
best in class environmental efficiency with the highest standards in performance and
productivity. Reducing the energy, solvents, VOCs and waste you utilize and generate will
be good for your business image and financials, good for the planet and will be critical to
keeping printing a competitive communications choice.
Environmental legislation and regulations are constantly being tightened
worldwide, and BALDWIN systems and
consumables will deliver important benefits as you put into place plans to meet
the tighter guidelines and sustainability
standards that await us all in the near
future.
Specifically, this means
•Using less energy and reducing
emissions
•Using fewer chemicals and cleaning
agents, and disposing of them safely
•Saving on water and paper – and
so protecting resources
•Being certified to sustainability
standards (e. g. EMAS, ISO 14001,
‘carbon-neutral printing’)
At BALDWIN, we are working constantly
to improve our products, to ensure they
are all environmentally efficient and
will today meet the tighter guidelines
and regulations of the future. We are
also actively engaged as a company in
protecting the environment by designing
workplaces, production processes
and practices that are environmentally
friendly.
BALDWIN internal energy
supply system:
Friedberg’s Sheetfed & Commercial-Web
competence center has a state-of-the-art
energy supply system, including a number
of modules, such as wood pellet heating,
heat recycling, building temperature
control and concrete core activation.
Just ask! Your BALDWIN
sales professional will be pleased
to discuss how we can assist you in
becoming a more
environmentally
efficient printer.
Sustainability 15
By using BALDWIN
products, you can
dem-onstrate a commitment to the environment, while also
improving the profitability of your printing.
Use less water
BALDWIN equipment conditions, controls temperature and filters fountain
solution. Our wide range of filtration units keep fountain solution viable
and in production longer, ensuring you can use less additive and reduce your
fresh water consumption considerably.
Create less waste
BALDWIN filtration units will help you reduce the amount of fountain solution
waste you generate considerably.
Innovative energy savings
BALDWIN’s advanced cooling systems utilize free cooling where frequencycontrolled drives cut in only when required, adjusting power automatically to
eliminate the unnecessary use of energy.
Use less paper
BALDWIN cleaning systems reduce wash cycle times and accomplish this
with considerably less consumable usage and operator involvement. The end
result is a more highly tuned automatic blanket cleaning technology that
will substantially lower total paper waste and consumable costs. Replacing
an older cleaning system with new ImpactFusion cleaning will in most cases
produce an ROI (return on investment) of less than a year.
Use fewer cleaning solvents and chemicals
Our PREPAC impregnated cleaning cloths contain only the amount of
cleaning agent needed to clean a blanket or impression cylinder perfectly.
Chemicals only go where they are needed, and therefore minimize the
contamination of the fountain solution. PREPAC is a low VOC cleaning
con-sumable and is making a major contribution for printers as they adapt to
meet new VOC guidelines and regulation limits in many regions of the world.
