The resolution is 64 columns and 88 lines with a
pixel size of 0.64 mm and a pixel distance of
0.03 mm.
High Line dash panel insert
The highline dash panel insert is always installed in
vehicles with navigation system.
Visual display is by means of a 3.2 inch Colour TFT
display with a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels.
Fuel gauge, quattro
The measured values of the senders for fuel
reserve G and G 169 are evaluated separately in
the dash panel insert.

Radio clock receiver
Due to difficult receiver conditions for radio signals
in the interior (screened by bodywork) the radio
clock receiver is attached to the rear bumper
bracket.

The radio clock receiver demodulates the received
HF signal (77.5 kHz)
The digital information is transmitted to the dash
panel insert as a PWM signal.

On-board computer
The on-board computer allocates two storage areas
• Short-term memory
• Long-term memory
for data, which can be reset separately from each
other.
The selection of the display is performed by briefly
pressing the RESET button on the wiper lever.
The short term memory is reset within a period of 2
hours after the ignition has been switched off, and
when vehicle speed exceeds 5 km/h.
This enables the stored values to be read out
immediately before the beginning of a new journey.
Resetting long-term memory:
Press RESET button at wiper lever for longer than
1s.
Dynamic handbrake control
If a vehicle speed of 5 km/h is exceeded for longer
than 3 seconds with the handbrake applied, a
warning signal is sounded

• Switch for handbrake via the convenience data
bus from the central convenience electronics
Immobiliser III
The emergency start function is only possible with
the diagnosis tester.

Terminal 86s (S-contact)
The terminal 86s signal is available in the dash
panel insert via conventional wiring and as CAN
information from the steering column electronics.
In order to achieve a greater time frame for key
recognition by the immobiliser, this function is
started as soon as the terminal 86s signal is
available (S contact).
The time delay of the signal at the convenience
data bus (calculation time, transmission time)
makes the conventional connection to the dash
panel insert necessary.

The interval for updates is approx. 10 min. Following repair, the time for checking the
function can be shortened to 2-3 min. by activating the radio clock function in adaption
channel 19. After activation, a test mode is run in which a partial signal from the radio clock
receiver is sufficient to test the function. This leads to a shorter test time.

The values are reset after the FSIA is reset. After resetting, the new display is indicated
after approx. 100 km or 3500 measured values. The measured values are calculated at 1
Hz.
The oil level warning threshold is transmitted to the dash panel insert from the engine
control unit by the data bus drive. This enables an oil level warning signal adapted to the
engine version.
Measured value blocks 10 to 19 and 22 to 24 are used for print-out before exchanging
the dash panel insert.

New functions of the central convenience
electronics
Tailgate lock cylinder
The lock cylinder in the tailgate is used for
mechanical emergency opening when central
locking fails as well as for switching the service
function.
The CLOSED microswitch is continuously actuated
when the lock cylinder is in the service setting.
The tailgate is not opened by the central locking
when opening the vehicle.
Opening the tailgate with the soft touch switch is
also not possible.
Switching of rear footwell and door warning
lamps
Switching the footwell and door warning lamps of
the rear doors in vehicles with mechanical window
lifters at the rear is carried out via the
semiconductor elements of the CCE.
This enables diagnosis of the power circuits.
Allocation of radio key memory
The driver’s seat memory has been extended from
4 to 8 locations.
• 4 locations for door trim memory switch
• 4 locations for radio remote control
The allocation of the radio key is carried out each
time the vehicle is locked using the radio remote
control.
When locking the vehicle, the current seat and
mirror positions are stored in the memory of the
relevant key.
The remote control key identifier is transmitted by
the CCE to
• the front right and left door control units (mirror
adjustment)
• the control unit for seat memory (seat
adjustment)
via the information data bus.

The capacity is sufficient for 10 x 10 x 30s alarm
output
A data protocol of 8 – 10 bits is transferred via the
bi-directional signal wiring between the central
convenience electronics and the backup horn.
This data protocol contains, for example, the data
• for charge level of internal battery
• for switching on anti-theft warning system
• for triggering through central convenience
electronics
• for fault message when electronics fail.
Innovation regarding the central locking in
vehicles with ATA
When opening the vehicle with the lock cylinder in
the driver’s door a time routine of 15 seconds is
started in the central convenience electronics
(CCE).
During this time the signals
• Terminal 15 On (steering column electronics)
• immobiliser key authorised (dash panel insert)
of the convenience data bus must be present in the
CCE.
If this is not the case, the alarm is triggered.
In this case the alarm can be switched off by
operating the “open”button of the remote control
and switching on the ignition with an authorised
key.

Radios of the new generation
Innovations to the radios
The AM receiving band has been extended to
include long wave frequencies:
• LW
153 – 279 KHz
• MW
531 – 1602 KHZ
The dynamic selection of interference from
neighbouring channels recognises interference at
the edges of the frequency band caused by other
transmitters.
The frequency band is reduced in small steps and
thus the disturbance is faded out.
When switching over to other radio station there
could be brief interference caused by neighbouring
channels but these fade out after a few seconds.
In addition, interference suppression in the AM
range has been improved.
Convenience radio coding
After the first input of an anti-theft code, the radio
sends a request for the number code to the dash
panel insert via the information data bus.
The dash panel insert answers with a number code.
The number code is stored in the radio.
After a loss of the voltage supply to the radio, a
request for the number code is sent to the dash
panel insert.
The dash panel insert answers with a number code.
The radio compares the number code with the
stored value and if these match, deactivates the
anti-theft lock.

Vehicle- specific sound curves:
The propagation of sound waves within the vehicle
is influenced by several factors.
Examples:
• Size of interior compartment
• Size of glass surfaces
• Texture of the interior trims
• Form and structure of the seats
• Arrangement of the loudspeakers
The sound curves are set according to the vehicle
type in the coding of the Concert II and Symphony
II radio units (see coding table).
Symphony II radio
Second radio tuner.
The second radio tuner searches in the background
for the alternative receiver frequencies with the
best reception quality for the radio station which is
playing.
If the reception quality of the station on the first
radio tuner diminishes, it immediately switches over
to the second radio tuner.
As the switchover is only very brief, no interruption
or clicking is audible.
In vehicles with navigation systems, the second
tuner is used for the reception of the Travel
Message Channel (TMC) data integrated in the
RDS signal.

An aerial amplifier for the four aerials of the aerial
diversity is installed in the aerial module of the
Audi A4.
Switching of the aerials takes place between the
aerials and the amplifier.
Aerial diversity
The aerial diversity evaluates the quality of the
radio receiver signal of the switched aerial (e.g.
aerial 1).
If the reception quality falls below a particular
threshold, the aerial diversity switches to the next

This aerial remains switched on until the reception
quality again falls below the threshold.

In order to perform the evaluation the aerial
diversity requires the intermediate frequency of
10.7 KHz from the radio unit.
In the Audi A4, the intermediate frequency is
passed on to the aerial module via a coaxial cable
together with the power supply for the aerial

The wiring connection is checked in the diagnosis
of the radio unit, based on the power consumption
of the aerial diversity.

The aerial conductors in the rear window are used
simultaneously for radio and TV reception.
New connector housing for aerial cables
The connector housing of the aerial cables are
colour-coded and mechanically coded. Thus,
interchange of the aerial connections is not
possible.
A repair solution for replacing the connector is not
envisaged. In case of damage the cable must be
replaced completely.

GSM aerial
The metal housing of the GSM aerial is used to
distribute the radio waves transmitted or received.
This makes installation at the rear window possible.
