Where Great Radio Begins™
From where we came…
…to where we are.
We began the same way as all great radio. We listened.
At first read, this may sound like old history. But our legacy is key to understanding
what we can offer you today.
When Jack Williams started PR&E more than 40 years ago in San Diego, California,
we were a service company, focused on building custom solutions for the recording
industry. In 1969 a local radio station heard about our variable-speed motor drive for
Ampex tape recorders and called for a demo. At that meeting, Jack and his team were
introduced to radio, an industry searching for better technology to create and air more
sophisticated programs with greater efficiency. Word quickly spread in the radio industry
about PR&E’s systems approach to designing and building custom solutions. In a matter
of months, PR&E was focused solely on radio.
ABOUT PR&E RADIO STUDIO SOLUTIONS
The company started building one-of-a-kind radio consoles and integrating them
into radio studios. Large-market radio was making the transition from always having
dedicated board operators running the console. This “combo operation” risked taking
talent’s attention away from creative tasks. PR&E engineers spent hours watching how
radio programs were produced to find ways to simplify tasks and workflow. Then they
asked questions, listened, watched some more and questioned some more.
PR&E sensed that substituting the rotary potentiometers found on most radio boards at
the time with the linear faders used in the recording industry would greatly improve efficiency. We saw that for every movement obvious to console operators, there were several
about which they were not aware. Nothing was overlooked to reach the goals of making
every movement smooth, reducing the chance of dead air and facilitating creativity.
We debuted the BMX in 1974 as our first off-the-shelf product. The twelfth console
designed by PR&E, it distilled the common denominators of its predecessors. Console
customization was still available, along with design and integration services scalable
from consultation to full installation.
The BMX changed the way radio was created and helped stations be more profitable.
But, PR&E remained driven towards further enhancements. We were the first technology company to attend programming conferences. Wild ideas from conversations with
programmers, producers and managers were put in perspective and then put into radio
studios and console products. The industry now takes for granted many of PR&E’s
innovations, such as push-button remote controls, routing of mix-minus signals, logic
for machine control of audio and other machines, as well as our refining the way equipment was arranged in radio studios.
The core of the current PR&E product range is our VistaMax™ audio networking. VistaMax
has been at the forefront of the evolution from stand-alone consoles to networked control
surfaces, centralized audio management and shared resources. VistaMax meets the
needs of the radio station “society” — on-air talent, producers, programmers, engineers
and others — with enormous power and sophistication, while presenting each user with
the most straightforward interface for his or her specific tasks.
The NetWave™ and RMXdigital™ consoles are the visible components of the VistaMax
architecture. A family of networked audio management devices contributes to flexibility
and scalability, while off-the-shelf and custom user-interface devices contribute to
operational efficiency.
We plan and build radio studios every day, each with takeaways that inform our next
projects. We know the questions to ask, enabling us to meet your technical, operational,
budget and deadline requirements. The same principles we use to design and build radio studios can be found in our internal operations — our application of technology and
manufacturing efficiencies make PR&E products and services affordable to all stations,
large, mid-sized and small.
There is no better assurance of our quality than the PR&E consoles in daily service —
nearly 5,000 the last time we counted — with an active dialog between PR&E and our
clients contributing to unparalleled, long-term support. And, because many of these
consoles have stayed in service after multiple format changes, there is no greater testament to the flexibility of our feature set.
The 1999 acquisition of PR&E by Harris has put us in front of more radio stations and
networks worldwide, while providing additional resources to continue on our progressive
development program. The Pacific Design Center in Vista, California, is home to PR&E’s
design team and digital studio support group. A visitor can meet both company “oldtimers” and more recent hires, collaborating with knowledge of how we’ve advanced
radio operations and the drive to make them even more efficient, reliable and creative.

VistaMax is the only radio facility networking architecture designed specifically to
provide both centralized and distributed input/output connectivity, as well as to offer the
most comprehensive array of devices to bring non-network devices into the operational
environment. Whether your facility has a large number of audio channels in a central
location, devices distributed throughout one or more facilities or a combination of the
two, VistaMax provides the ability to always connect sources and destinations to the
system via the shortest, most practical physical paths.
Additionally, the PR&E NetWave and RMXdigital consoles present both fully local and
network device interface, resulting in more flexible installation, configuration options
that precisely match each station’s needs and additional levels of redundancy. Our console surfaces, along with a wide range of network management systems, edge devices,
control panels and device interfaces, contribute to both productivity and creativity.
VistaMax audio networking makes it easy and affordable to share resources over realtime audio and logic networks without long, expensive multi-pair bundles of inter-room
wiring. With fewer potential points of failure, this networkable architecture also allows
you to mix and control non-adjacent inputs, outputs and logic using a structure of audio
acquisition, routing, control and distribution.
Shared Resources — Now!
In today’s consolidated broadcast environment, speed is of the essence. You don’t need
it tomorrow or an hour from now – you need it now! You don’t have the time or resources to rebuild studios that meet new requirements. VistaMax provides a more modular,
scalable and configurable approach to system design, allowing each installation to be
adapted to your unique requirements with fewer physical plant changes. Many stations
will be able to use the same studio for different formats in different day-parts.

Sharing common sources between any studio requires only a single hardwired connection to any audio input in the system. This could be a VistaMax input or simply an
input to any networked console. Distribution of shared sources requires no additional
hardware or discrete wiring in this networked environment. This means the IP codec
connected to input X on the console in “Studio A” can be accessed directly by any other
console in the system and, of course, all buses can be shared and accessed by any
other console or selectable output in the system.
With VistaMax, there are virtually no limits on expandability. Audio is connected once, but it is
available for simultaneous use at all current (and future) studio locations within the system.

Mainframes with monitor control panel and single-width blank panels.
Attention to detail has always been the hallmark of PR&E consoles and RMXdigital takes
this to a whole new level. RMXdigital packs a remarkable amount of functionality into its

Many smaller radio station facilities have found digital audio networking to be
cost-prohibitive. Now, the affordable VMConnect makes powerful, flexible VistaMax
digital studio networks an option for operations of all sizes. It is based upon, and fully
compatible with, VistaMax and VistaMax Envoy audio management frames, delivering
“no compromise” reliability and performance.
