Online Thickness Gauge

nOverview
This online thickness gauge measures the thickness
and weight per unit area of plastic films, Tire, Battery
Electrode, Ceramic Sheet, Multiple Layer Board, Adhesion Tape, Coated Paper and other film and sheeting
materials.
This online thickness gauge provides continuous quality information on the material being measured and
therefore can realize a quality improvement, a raw
material saving and a yield rate improvement.
The gauge is available with a variety of sensor types
to enable the configuration of thickness measurement
systems optimized to operating conditions and the material being measured, whether plastic film, laminated
sheet, metal foil or etc. Since Infrared, Beta-ray and
X-ray sensors are capable of measuring without being
in contact with the material being measured, these sensors enable continuous measurement without harming
the measured material.
The major components of this system include newly
developed O-frame, C-frame, Measurement operator
station, Panel, Control unit and Peripheral devices.
A comprehensive line of sensors - Infrared, Beta-ray,
X-ray sensors - are offered, allowing selection to match
the operating conditions and material being measured.
O-frame
The frame is an intelligent frame incorporating a frame
processor. This intelligent frame allows you to have Hispeed scan, 1200 data points measurement.
A newly developed Automatic Gain Control (AGC) allows maintenance of specified sensor accuracy until a
half life time of Beta-ray source.
The processor unit of the measurement operator station includes a sequence CPU and an AT-compatible
CPU, allowing display of profile data, digital data, and
trend data on a color LCD. A special dependable FA
Link, allowing a distributed system, connects each
frame and measurement operator station. Also, MD
control can be performed on the measurement operator
station.
The CD control unit, whose processor unit includes a
sequence CPU, can perform sophisticated CD control,
such as sampled data PI control, CD neuro tuning
(Auto tuning), in conjunction with the CD control tuning
operator station.
Although a typical system is composed of one frame
and one measurement operator station (the nest or the
panel type), a system can also be constructed of up
to four (4) frames and one measurement operator station to support a biaxial stretching machine or coating
machine.
In addition to above, by adding the CD control unit and
the CD control tuning operator station, this online thickness gauge become as the online control system.

nGeneral MD/CD Control Function
The MD control is intended to automatically control
extruder rotation speed, chill roll speed, etc. The CD
control is intended to automatically control heat bolts
of T dye, etc. to realize a quality improvement, a raw
material saving and a yield rate improvement.
CD control has additional functions:
CD adaptive control: Automatically adjusts mapping
between measurement points on profile
and heat bolts, etc. while performing CD
control.
Roll shape control: Improves roll shape by theorizing
user’s know-how.

nAdjunction Function
Below function can be adjunct as option.
Multi set position: Measure thickness of multiple positions across the sheet with pre defined period.
Strip coating calculation: Measure striped coating thickness by applying threshold with one sensor on a frame.
BX coating calculation: Calculate a coating thickness
by utilize an absorption characteristic difference of
coating material of Beta-ray and X-ray.
Multiple frames synchronization and coating measurement: Measurement spot before and
after the coating station is synchronized to
calculate coating thickness.
Multiple frame integrated control: Multiple frames
on multiple lines can be controlled by a
measurement operator station.
Profile stack server: Saves profile data to database
server
3D profile view and analysis: Displays profile data
saved in profile stack server as three-dimensional distribution.
nOther Function
1. Analog Output
The system provides up to eight (8) analog outputs
including average and instantaneous values as well as
head-position signals.
User can configure the analog output type either an
absolute or deviation. In addition, user can apply filtering features for the instantaneous values for the X-Y
recorder.

detailed.
2. AUTCAL
2.1 Frame Compensation
The head is scan without sheet in the sensor gap, and
the measured frame characteristics are stored in memory. These values are used as compensation values in
profile and average value computations.
2.2 TEST RUN
The head is moved to a calibration position, and a
standard sample is measured to confirm measurement
repeatability of sensor.
2.3 Initial AUTCAL
This is used when initializing the measurement computation for radiation source decay compensation, window
foil replacement, and etc. The radiation source decay
days count and the dust values are set automatically
to 0.
3. Automatic Screen Print Out
An operation screen can be printout by external command and event.

4. Frame to User’s PC (measurement operator station) Communications or Vice
Versa, and Frame Processor Maintenance
Using PC (customer supplied)
4.1 RS Frame Communication
This communication function can be use to connect user’s PC for a measurement operator station. This communication handle only frame data, 1st sensor data and
1st sensor profile. User’s PC will have same functional
limitation if the Yokogawa measurement operator station is connected to frame at the same time. Refer “RS
Frame Communication Manual (IM14M01T60-01E)” for
detailed limitations.
Communication type: RS-232C asynchronous or
RS-422A
Transmission specifications: 7/8-bit character length,
stop bits 1/1.5/2, even or odd parity, or no
parity, transmission rate 4800/9600/19200
BPS, point-to-point connection (one port)
Text length: varies with text. A maximum text length is
256, 512, or 1024 bytes.
Text type: The following text types are used;
- Frame control from the user’s PC.
- Acquisition of measurement data, and text necessary
for processor maintenance.
In addition, message communications with the user’s
PC from the frame processor and communication requests from the user’s PC or their reply to that computer are available.
4.2 Frame Processor Maintenance Software
Wide field software package is used to maintain the
frame processor program with some functional limitation. Customer supplied PC (PC/AT compatible) is
required to install the wide field software package.
5. External Input/Output Signal (option)
Refer “Installation Manual (TI14M01A04-01E)” for detailed specification of an input/output signal. However,
the sheet break contact input is included in system as
standard feature.

n CD Control Tuning Operator Station
The CD control tuning (CD control main and sub unit,
and UT2800 temperature controller) is performed via
the CD control tuning operator station.
Required specification for the CD control tuning operator station is as follow and it is customer supply.
Personal computer compatibility: IBM PC/AT compatible
Personal computer type: Desk top or lap top
Operating system: MS Windows XP Professional with

Pentium III 1.3 GHz or faster
Main memory: 512 M bytes minimum
HDD:
20 G bytes minimum

Ethernet port: 1 port minimum (10 M bytes or faster)

drive, Key board, Mouse, and Drive for

6. Cables
FA link cable: This cable is used between the frame
and measurement operator station processor;
Length of 10, 30, 50 or 100 meter cable
(WG31FAL) is available to order or customer supply.
Recommended cable: HITACHI Cable Ltd. Co.
KPEV-SB 0.5 mm2 × 2 pair shield cable
Ethernet Cable: This cable is used between the
measurement operator station and the CD
control main unit.
HUB is required and it is customer supply.
However, it is possible to utilize HUB that
installed in the panel type operator station
(WG31OP2A).
Optical FA Bus Cable: This cable is used between
the CD control main unit and the sub unit.
This dedicated cable is supplied with
system.
UT Link Cable: This cable is used between the CD
control main unit and the UT temperature
controller and customer supply.
Recommended cable: HITACHI Cable Ltd. Co. COSPEV-SA(A) 3P × 0.5 mm2.
RS Communication Cable: This cable is used between the Frame processor and User’s
modem or personal computer.
Type of cable is an RS-232C cable
(terminated at both ends) or an RS-422A
cable (terminated at one end of the cable)
depends on type of the RS communication module.
This cable is customer supply however 2,
5, and 15 meter long cable is available to
order if it is for an RS-232C and Dsub25
connector (Male pin).
Personal computer connection cable (for programming tool): This cable is used between
the frame processor and the maintenance
personal computer and it is dedicated for
the frame processor maintenance for the
individual frame systems.
Refer to Installation manual (TI14M01A04-01E) for
installation detail and contact YOKOGAWA (P&W) for
detailed to order cable.

For a process which corresponds to either one of the following conditions, high stability type (Heat up) sensor is recommended.
1. Frame installation environment

c. The frame is located near the door opened frequently for shipping out the products.
d. The frame is located so that its scanning area is adjacent to an air conditioning outlet.
2. Measurement material
a. Average base weight of the measurement material is smaller than 20 g/m2.
b. The temperature of the measurement material can very larger than ±3 °C.
