D. BASIC INSTALLATION AND CONNECTIONS
\
1. Place the KSA-5 on a firm level surface away from excessive dirt
or moisture.
2. Connect the DC power cable to the DC input on the KSA-5. Connect
the other end of the cable to the KSA-5 power supply.
3. Keep the KSA-5 power switch in the OFF/down position and connect
the power cord to the AC input on the power supply. Once the power
cord is secured to the power supply connect the other end to the AC
wall receptacle.
NOTE: The KSA-5 is equipped with a long DC cable so the power supply
can be placed away from hum sensitive components like preamplifiers.
The KSA-5 is a Class A power amplifier and should be placed in a
convenient, well-ventilated space close to your headphone listening
area.
4. KSA-5 Line Level Input & Output Connection Information
Because the KSA-5 does not have a preamplification stage it needs to
be driven from a source component with a variable output. Best
results will be obtained when driven by a preamplifier output stage.
Most preamplifiers have two sets of main outputs, one of which is
usually unused. We suggest connecting the KSA-5 to the unused output.
If the second set of outputs is a fixed-level output it cannot be
used.
The KSA-5 is designed with a "through-put" input/output system. The
through-put is an output connected directly to the input. This allows
the Direct Output to be used for connection to the input of a power
amplifier if there are not two independent variable preamplifier
outputs, or as the installation requires.
The through-put output of the KSA-5 is always operational whether the
KSA-5 is on or off. When playing your primary audio system keep the
KSA-5 in the OFF position.
CAUTION: If you are using a source device such as a tape deck or CD
player make sure there is a variable output to control the headphone
level. The output levels attained by a fixed source can be high
enough to damage your headphones or, more importantly, your hearing.
5. Based on the information provided above, make the necessary input
(and output) connections appropriate for your system.
6. Connect your headphones to the output of the KSA-5.
CAUTION: Always keep your preamplifier in the mute or standby
position and the KSA-5 off while making input or output connections.
The KSA-5 accommodates several different output connections:
a. 2 Standard locking 1/4 inch phone jacks
b. 1 standard 3-pin XLR connector
0: 1 pair of standard 5 way binding posts to accommodate STAX type
earspeakers.
The KSA-5 is a powerful headphone amplifier capable of driving
several pairs of headphones at once.
CAUTION: Do not connect the KSA-5 to any loudspeakers. It is not
designed for this application, which could damage the unit or
speakers.
E. OPERATION
1. Once you have made input and output connections flip the front
panel switch to the ON position. The LED on the front panel will
illuminate. A few seconds later you will hear a soft clicking noise.
This noise is the protection relay turning on.
2. Select the appropriate input on your preamplifier and source
material.
3. Play the source at low level to confirm that all connections to
and from the KSA-5 are correct.
4. Find a volume level that is comfortable and enjoy.
5. When you have fi-ished listening turn the KSA-5 off. The power
supply should remain plugged in at all times. |
NOTE: For the protection of your KSA-5 we recommend disconnecting the
AC cord from the wall outlet before any electrical storms or if you
plan on being away from your home for prolonged periods of time.
