Backup your data before updating Chesar
We recommend the users to back-up their data using application level export and
database back-up.
Export data at the Chesar level
For each of your substance, export the CSA:
open your substance in Chesar Box1 - Substance menu.
In the Chesar menu Import – Export, select Export CSA to export a c1z file of your
substance
Database level back-up
If using Oracle, please consult your DBA to back-up Chesar schema.
In PostgreSQL, you can do a back-up with pgAdminIII. Open the tool and choose the
Chesar database. Right click and select Backup (image below):

Checking the version of Chesar plugin
Before installing or updating the Chesar plugin, it is recommended to check if, and
which version of the Chesar plugin has been already installed.
To check whether the Chesar plugin is installed, please follow these steps:
Step 1: Open the IUCLID 5.3 application and check if the Chesar plugin logo is visible
on the home screen.
Figure 3:
IUCLID 5.3.0 with Chesar plugin logo
If the Chesar logo is not visible on the home screen it means that the Chesar plugin has
not been installed for this version of IUCLID 5 and you can proceed with the installation
(please see chapter 3 of this installation manual).
Version 1.6
Release date 05 August 2011
Step 2: If the Chesar logo appears in the IUCLID 5 home screen, please run the
Chesar plugin and check the version (the version number is visible on the upper left
corner of the main screen).
If the Chesar version is ‘Chesar 1.0’ or higher, you can update it using the Chesar 1.2
installer (please see chapter 2 in this installation manual)

Chesar installation process
The Chesar installer will copy the plugin files into appropriate folders in your IUCLID 5.3
installation and create the Chesar database.
The database management system (DBMS) that should be used for the Chesar
installation is the same one that is used by IUCLID 5.3. Chesar proposes installing a
Postgres DBMS by default, however, an Oracle DBMS can be configured.
Warning:
Oracle database configuration: Chesar requires its own tablespace for installation.
Please see section 3.1 for the Oracle database configuration.
.
3.1
Oracle® database configuration
The installation details of the Oracle DBMS are out of scope of this document due to its
complexity. Please refer to the Oracle documentation or contact the vendor of the
software.
If Oracle is not installed on the computer where you are installing IUCLID 5, the
SQL*Plus oracle client application is needed to prepare a database for Chesar.
Installation instructions for SQL*Plus can be found in chapter 2.1.3 of the IUCLID 5.3
Installation Guide - Client-Server Architecture (Oracle® + Weblogic®) available at the
IUCLID 5 website.
3.1.1
Creating the new tablespace for chesar database
In order to create a new tablespace and user you have to log in as SYS user. If you do
not know the SYS password ask your Oracle database administrator to create the
chesar user and tablespace.

3.2
Running the Chesar installer
If Chesar 1.0 (or higher) has been previously installed, you can update it to Chesar 1.2
using this installer.
Users who had previously installed a ‘fresh’ installation of Chesar 1.1.3 should be
aware that there were technical issues preventing the software from functioning
correctly. These particular users are advised not to use the ‘update’ but instead
make a fresh installation of Chesar 1.2. For users who updated from 1.1.2 to 1.1.3,
the update installation from 1.1.3 to 1.2 can be used.
If you upgraded to IUCLID 5.3, the chesar plug-in will not appear before running the
installer in update mode (cf. section 5.4 of this installation manual).
Step 1:.Unzip the ChesarInstaller_2011-08-05.zip onto your hard disk drive
(i.e.:C:\Chesar_Installer\) and run the Chesar installer by double clicking the ChesarInstallerstandard.jar.
If you are not able to run the Chesar Installer on Vista® or Windows7® computers please
refer to chapter 5 “Running Chesar installer under MS Windows Vista or Windows7” of this
installation manual.
The following installer window with the title “IzPack Installation of Chesar 1.2” appears:

After having deleted the Chesar database, you need to remove all files deployed by the
Chesar installer. An uninstaller is provided for this purpose that is located in the
“Uninstaller” folder of IUCLID.
For the stand alone version, the uninstaller folder is located in the folder entered in the
step described in section 3.7.1 of this installation manual.
For the Distributed version, the uninstaller folder is located in the home directory
(windows %USERPROFILE% variable).
Uninstaller will not work with a beta version of Chesar, you will need to remove it manually. In
this case refer to section 4.4 of this installation manual
Step 1: Double click on the “uninstaller.jar” file:

uninstaller.

I cannot find the IUCLID 5.3 icon on my desktop
The IUCLID installer copies the icon on the desktop of the current user. In case another
user (i.e. IT Helpdesk) has installed IUCLID with his account, please make sure that the
IUCLID icon has been copied to the:
Windows XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop
Win Vista/Windows 7:
C:\Users\Public\Public Desktop
6.4 Sometimes I get an ‘Java.OutOfMemoryError’ or
‘Java.lang.OutOfMemoryError:PermGen space’ error.
What am I to do?
Chesar is using the same memory allocated to IUCLID 5 In Chesar you can
receive 2 types of OutOfMemory errors:
1) java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space
This error indicates that the Heap utilization has exceeded the value set by Xmx. It can be avoided by increasing the maximum heap size, e.g.: Xmx=1024m
2) java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: PermGen space
This error indicates that the Permanent Generation segment of the heap has
exceeded its maximum value. Permanent Generation holds meta-data
describing user classes (classes that are not part of the Java language). It can
be avoided by increasing the maximum permanent generation size,
e.g.: -XX:MaxPermSize=128m
If you have IUCLID 5.3 stand-alone version, then please right-click the IUCLID 5
icon and choose ‘Properties’ in the Shortcut tab. In the “Target:” field, please
make only the changes marked below in bold and leave the rest of the line
unmodified:
e.g. Target:"C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe" -Xms512m -Xmx1024m
-XX:MaxPermSize=128m -classpath conf;lib/* -Djava.library.path=lib/native
