POWER SUPPLY
BATTERY POWER OPERATION
1. Set the AC/DC selector to DC,
2. Open the battery/mains lead compartment
1id by pushing the latches.
3. Install 6 "D" size batteries exactly as
shown on the rear panel.
4, Close the compartment lid,
CAUTION
WHEN INSTALLING BATTERIES
To prevent battery leakage, which may pos-
sibly result in bodily injury and damage to
the unit or other objects, observe the fol-
lowing precautions: |
1. All batteries must be installed with prop-
er polarity (see diagram on the back of
the unit).
2. Do not mix new with old or used batteries.
3. Only use batteries of the same type and
brand.
4, Unused batteries should not be left in
unit,
BATTERY CHECK
During operation with batteries, the OPR/BATT
indicators show battery condition.

good condition
dim or does not light:
exhausted and must be replaced
AC POWER OPERATION
1. Set the AC/DC selector to AC.
2. Open the battery/mains lead compartment
1id and pull out the mains lead.
3. Connect the mains lead to an AC 240 V wall
outlet.
4, Close the compartment lid with the mains
lead running through the notch in the lid.
SURROUND SYSTEM
"SURROUND" is a sound space formation method
which brings about the feel of a live perfor-
mance by expanding sound. To experience this
exciting new dimension in sound quality, sim-
ply set the SURROUND switch to ON, |
Note:
- With the SURROUND switch set to ON, the
RADIO

BAND selector.

AERTAL
For AM reception, the aerial inside the unit
is somewhat directional, and so reception
from distant stations may sometimes be im-
proved by rotating the unit. For FM recep-
tion, pull out the telescopic aerial and de-
termine the direction, length and angle to
give the best reception.
BAND SELECTOR (BAND)
For receiving an AM broadcast, set the selec-
tor to AM, For receiving an FM stereo broad-
cast, set the selector to FM STEREO, The FM
STEREO indicator will light up when an FM
stereo broadcast is being received. For re-
ceiving mono or weak-signal FM stereo broad-
casts, set the selector to FM MONO to avoid
possible interference.
surround indicator will flash correspond-
ing with sound level.
- The surround effect can be activated
whilst you are listening to a radio broad-
cast, CD, or tape in stereo.
- The surround effect cannot be recorded.
OPERATION
OPERATION/BATTERY/TAPE DIRECTION INDICATORS
(OPR/BATT)
Either of these Indicators light whilst the
unit is in operation and indicates the direc-
tion of tape travel (TAPE A),
GRAPHIC EQUALIZER CONTROLS (5 BAND GRAPHIC
EQUALIZER)
By means of five independent frequency con-
trols (100Hz/300Hz/lkHz/3kHz/10kHz), you can
get your favourite sound shape flexibly,
"Flat response" is obtained by setting the
controls to the 0 position.
HEADPHONE SOCKET (PHONES)
For private listening, connect a stereo head-
phone (32-ohm impedance, not supplied) to
this socket. о
PLAYBACK (TAPE A) (TAPE B)
Note:
Do not use any endless tape with this unit.
A) PLAYING A RECORDED TAPE (TAPE A) (TAPE B)
1. Press the STOP/EJECT button and insert a
recorded cassette.
2, Set the FUNCTION selector to TAPE,
3, Press the PLAY button. mm —
- Tf both PLAY buttons are pressed simul-
taneously, TAPE A and TAPE B will be
mixed and reproduced from the speakers.
4, Adjust the VOLUME and GRAPHIC EQUALIZER
controls to the desired sound level and
tone. |
5, Press the STOP/EJECT button to stop play-
back at any time. When the end of the tape
has been reached, the automatic stop (or
automatic reverse) will be activated.
Note: |
Whilst only TAPE B is activated, the OPR/BATT
indicators do not show the tape direction of
TAPE B.
AUTO REVERSE PLAYBACK (TAPE A)
Since TAPE A has been provided with an Auto
Reverse mechanism, it is not necessary to
invert the cassette. Before starting play-
back, set the REV MODE switch to CD
ог (= as you desire. The tape running
direction will be indicated with the OPR/BATT
indicators during playback.

For continuous playback
The unit will play continuously unless you
press the STOP/EJECT button.
For one-cycle playback (Forward and re-
verse)
The automatic stop will be activated at
the end of one-cycle operation.
- If playback has begun in the reverse
mode, the automatic stop will be ac-
tivated at the end of reverse opera-
tion.
MANUAL REVERSE PLAYBACK (TAPE A)
During playback, pressing the tape DIRECTION
button will instantly change the side of cas-
sette to be played. Before starting playback,
determine the tape running direction by using
this button,
B) PLAYBACK OF TAPE-A AND TAPE-B CONTINUOUSLY
(TAPE A) => (TAPE B)
1. Set the FUNCTION selector to TAPE.

3. Press the PLAY button (TAPE A side).
4, Press the PAUSE button (TAPE B side).
5. Press the PLAY button (TAPE B side).
(Tape-B will not move.)
After the automatic stop has been activat-
ed on TAPE A, the PAUSE button will be
released and TAPE B will automatically
‘begin to play back. a SE
When the end of the tape 1s reached on
TAPE B, the automatic stop will be ac-
tivated.
CAUTION:
While playing or recording, do not press the
FFWD or REW button of the other tape mecha-
nism, as it may result in inferior sound
quality. |
PAUSE (TAPE В)
Press the PAUSE button to momentarily stop
tape travel during playback or recording.
Re-press the button to re-start playback or
recording.
FAST FORWARD AND REWIND
(TAPE A side)
For fast winding or rewinding the tape, first
press the PLAY button to note the tape run-
ning direction by the OPR/BATT indicators and
press the STOP/EJECT button to stop playback.
Then press the appropriate FFWD/REW button.
Press the STOP/EJECT button when the desired
location has been reached. When the end of
the tape has been reached, the reels will
stop. The STOP/EJECT button should then be
pressed.
(TAPE B side)
For fast winding or rewinding the tape, press
the FFWD or REW button. Press the STOP/EJECT
button when the desired location has been
reached. When the end of the tape has been
reached, the automatic stop will be activat-
ed.
C) PLAYING AN EXTERNAL SOUND SOURCE THROUCH
THE UNIT
1, Connect OUTPUT or TAPE REC sockets of your
CD player or amplifier etc. to the CD/LINE
IN sockets of the unit using PHONO plug
terminated leads (not supplied).
2. Set the FUNCTION selector to CD/LINE IN.
3. Adjust the VOLUME and GRAPHIC EQUALIZER
controls to the desired sound level and
tone,
RECORDING (TAPE B)
For recording, use TAPE B.
This unit has an ALC circuit and no further
adjustment of recording level is necessary.
RECORDING FROM THE BUILT-IN RADIO
Press the STOP/EJECT button and insert a
cassette,
Tune in a desired radio programme as pre-
viously described in "RADIO OPERATION",
Press the RECORD button.
Since you can monitor through the speakers
regardless of recording level, adjust the
VOLUME and GRAPHIC EQUALIZER controls to
the desired sound level and tone.
Press the STOP/EJECT button to stop re-
cording at any time. When the end of the
tape has been reached, the automatic stop
will be activated.

BEAT CANCEL SWITCH (DUB SPEED/BEAT CANCEL)
When recording a radio programme on the tape,
an irritating beat sound (high pitched tone)
may sometimes be heard. In this case, simply
change the switch position so that the beat
sound is reduced.
RECORDING FROM THE BUILT-IN MICROPHONE
(mono recording)
Set the FUNCTION selector to TAPE,
Press the RECORD button.
Speak in a normal voice at a distance of
approximately 45 .cm away from the unit,
Note:
To prevent feedback, monitoring is not possi-
ble.

C) RECORDING FROM AN EXTERNAL SOUND SOURCE
1. Connect an external sound source to the
CD/LINE IN sockets.
2. Set the FUNCTION selector to CD/LINE IN,
3. Follow steps "3" to "5" of RECORDING FROM
THE BUILT-IN RADIO section.
PREVENTION OF ACCIDENTAL ERASING (Fig. 2)
To protect valuable recordings from acci-
dental erasing, the tape recorder and the
cassette are equipped with standard safety
features, To keep the recorded material,
break out the tabs on the back of the cas-
sette with a knife or screwdriver.
To protect the side A (1) from accidental
erasure, break out the right side tab (2). To
record on a cassette whose tabs have been
broken, simply attach adhesive tape (3) over
the tab opening. The unit will not operate in
recording mode when a cassette tab has been
removed,
ERASING
1. Make sure that TAPE A cassette is removed,
2. Set the FUNCTION selector to DUB,
3. Press the RECORD button.
DUBBING OPERATION
(from TAPE A to TAPE B)
Recording of radio programmes or dubbing of
tapes is permissible only insofar as copy-
right or other rights of third parties are
not thereby infringed.

Press the PAUSE button (TAPE B side),
Press the RECORD button (TAPE B side).
To start -the dubbing operation, press the
PLAY button (TAPE A side).
To stop the dubbing, press both STOP/EJECT
buttons.
AUTOMATIC STOP IN DUBBING OPERATION

If TAPE A tape is longer than TAPE B:
After the automatic stop has been activat-
ed on TAPE B, TAPE A will continue to play
back at normal speed.
If TAPE B tape is longer than TAPE A:
After the automatic stop has activated on
TAPE A, TAPE B will be in the erasing
mode, The STOP/EJECT button should then be
pressed.
Note:
Do not change the dubbing speed during the
dubbing operation.
