Introduction

This document describes the specification and capabilities of OCZ Saber 1000 HMS. The OCZ

Saber HMS SSDs are optimized to deliver high performance and predictable low latency that is desirable for a robust application infrastructure in an enterprise setting.

1.1

Solution Overview

Host Managed SSD (HMS) is an innovative technology which provides an extended API and feature set that a host can use to manage a pool of SSDs. These features include Garbage Collection control, endurance monitoring, power control and extended read and write commands. By using these features over a pool of SSDs, e.g., in a Hyperconverged system or hyperscale environment, the host can manage operations such as Wear Leveling or Garbage Control, thus achieving more efficient utilization and performance.

As the name suggests, Saber HMS employs Saber 1000 SSDs which are built with the OCZ Barefoot 3 controller combined with OCZ's optimized firmware architecture. Saber 1000 SSDs deliver data at a high-level of application performance. The drive also comes with built in Power Failure Management

Plus (PFM+) protection that safeguards Saber 1000 against bricking during unexpected power loss.

This 2.5” form factor SSD product has a Serial ATA-6Gb/s interface and it is designed using Toshiba

A19nm MLC NAND flash memory available in 480GB and 960GB capacities.

Reliability

OCZ Saber 1000 Series SSDs meets or exceeds SSD endurance and data retention requirements as specified in the JESD218 standard. Reliability specifications are listed in the tables below.

4.1

Saber HMS Endurance Rating

Unlike magnetic media, flash media has a limited number of write/erase cycles. The number of erase cycles is determined by the density and technology of the flash. Write-worn SSDs are subjects to malfunctions, errors and failures.

Saber 1000 HMS conforms to the standard 5-year

Enterprise warranty and support. Additionally, Saber 1000 HMS endurance, or “Life Left” is tracked using the average P/E cycle count across the Saber 1000 HMS SSD. A Saber 1000 HMS drive will remain in warranty until such time that 5 years have expired from the date of purchase, or the remaining “Life Left” SMART attribute reaches zero, whichever comes first. Because HMS controls allow the system administrator unfettered control over drive upkeep activities, drive endurance may be exhausted faster than the 5 years of normal rated DWPD. As a result, OCZ has implemented a drive Warranty calculation that guarantees the rated P/E cycle count of the NAND, allowing the administrator freedom to manage their storage how they see fit.

Additional Features

7.1

Encryption

The OCZ Saber 1000 Series SSDs features AES-256-bit encryption with automatic hardware encryption to provide protection of all metadata and user’s data at all times.

7.2

Power Failure Management

The OCZ Saber 1000 Series SSD supports Power Failure Management Plus (PFM+), or partial PFAIL, which prevents “brick drive” syndrome so the SSD remains operational post outage. In flight data is not protected for unexpected system power loss.

7.3

Temperature Monitor and Logging

The Saber 1000 Series SSDs has an internal temperature sensor for monitoring temperature. The feature can be monitored using SMART attributes.

7.4

Device Activity Signal (DAS) indication

The Saber 1000 Series SSD DAS LED polarity is set automatically to the default state during manufacturing. The polarity can be inverted in the field using Clout or SSD ProTools.

7.5

Secure Erase

OCZ recommends the use of the Secure Erase feature prior to reformatting a used SSD.

Hot Plug Support

Hot Plug insertion and removal are supported in the presence of a proper connector and appropriate operating system (OS) support as described in the SATA 2.6 specification. This product supports Asynchronous Signal Recovery and will issue an unsolicited COMINIT when first mated with a powered connector to guarantee reliable detection by a host system without hardware device detection.
