Network Support Analyst
Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Network Administrator, assist in the maintenance and the
operational efficiency of an 800+ user wide area network.
List of Duties Include:
Anti-Virus/Spyware/Malware – Perform regular virus, Spyware and Malware scans on
all workstations and servers. Ensure that the servers/workstations are running the
latest version of these applications. Keep current with the latest versions of “End Point
Protection” tools. If a virus, or Malware are found, take the necessary steps to contain
the intrusion. Continually monitor server, workstations and networking infrastructure,
and take appropriate action as necessary to ensure system reliability.
Software/Hardware Support
- Operating Systems- Thorough working knowledge of various operating systems
including but not limited to Windows and Linux. The ability to install, support,
maintain, update and troubleshoot these operating systems. Apply Windows and
Linux updates monthly, or as appropriate.
- Software Applications - Support various software applications including but not
limited to – VMWare, EqualLogic, Unitrends, Citrix, Outlook (Exchange), Laser
Fiche, escribe, Microsoft Office, Time Manager, InfoHR, etc.
Hardware – Assist Network Administrator with maintaining, installing, repairing,
upgrading, configuring, replacing and troubleshooting of server hardware, including
but not limited to network cards, raid controllers, hard drives, routers, switches, UPS
batteries, etc.
Software Upgrades - Recommend and perform software upgrades to the many
different departments within the County of Essex. Upgrades need to be planned out
in advance to ensure minimal interruption to the end users. Upgrades most often need
to be performed at night. Ensure all workstations/servers are kept up to date.
Create/Manage Group Policies to push updates to all devices on the network.
Work with Municipalities to ensure County Access – Ensure secure access for
municipalities to Web, Laserfiche and GIS data. Assist lower tier Municipalities with
troubleshooting access issues, routing issues, workstation issues etc. Work with the
GIS Department to maintain and troubleshoot GIS Server applications.
Maintain County Email System – 900+ mailboxes - Ensure user access to County email
system. Work with the Network Administrator to maintain and monitor email backup
systems and to restore lost or corrupted email. Monitor and maintain SPAM filter,
including updates, filtering exceptions, whitelist exceptions etc. Work with the Network
Administrator to monitor/maintain mailbox disk space usage, archiving, restrictions
Active Directory and Group Policies – Manage Active Directory for the Counties 800+
user network. Work with the Network Administrator to assign and maintain appropriate
rights to the file system, and to create and manage Group Policies.
Hardware/Software Updates – Apply updates to county servers (example: Windows
and Malware updates). Updates applied during low usage times, or outside of regular
working hours. Work with Network Administrator and vendors in troubleshooting
issues with updates. Notify and work with end users on changes and issues that arise
due to application of updates and new hardware/software.
Data/file recovery – Recovery of corrupted files or lost data. May involve recovery of
user data from a hard drive or working with the Network Administrator on restoring a
file from backup.
Research and remain current with Security, Servers and New Technologies – Stay
current with the latest technologies, Operating Systems and server software.
Recommend upgrades and enhancements to the County network. Participate in testing
new technologies and devise methods of managing them in the County environment.
Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery – Assist with the development of business
continuity and disaster recovery plans and respond to network outages in accordance
to the plans.
Security Solutions – Assist the Network Administrator with performing security audits,
system backups and recovery, and to ensure optimum network security. Develop and
maintain security procedures throughout the network.
Documentation – Document instances of software and hardware issues, repair,
installation, inventory, removal and other related requests. Document end of life
cycles and license expiration.
Completion of a 3 year diploma/degree in a discipline such as Computer Science or
Information Technology.
Current knowledge and experience with Windows and Linux Server Technology
Current knowledge and experience with network and IT infrastructure design,
implementation, management, best practices, and emerging trends
Strong working technical knowledge of current network hardware, protocols, and
Internet standards, including TCP/IP, IPSEC, QoS, DNS, DHCP, SMTP, SNMP, NAT,
POE as well as technical knowledge of layer 2 and Layer 3 networking & routing
protocols including Spanning Tree Protocol, CDP, VTP, EIGRP
Comprehensive knowledge of internetworking hardware and services to effectively
troubleshoot and maintain network security and infrastructure
Works collaboratively with all staff in order to develop a positive team
A minimum of 3 years of experience in a network architecture role within a
complex systems environment including experience designing and implementing
wide area network
Must possess and maintain a valid Class “G” Ontario driver’s license and have access to a
personal vehicle for work related purposes (travel within Windsor and/or the County of
Essex may be required)
Hours of Work:
35 hours per week, ability to work altered hours and overtime on short notice as required
(evening and weekends).
$29.65 to $34.99 per hour, CUPE Local 2974.1 (under review)
