An extensive array of data was collected through our own
studies and surveys of users and those of some recognized
ergonomics experts – as well as the testing standards for
task seating in North America and Europe. Using this
information, a design was sculpted to provide exceptional
lumbar support in the primary areas of the body that suffer from fatigue in a seated position: the lower lumbar of
the back, the arms, and muscles of the legs.

State-of-the-art computer modeling and testing provided
an extensive trial and error process to carefully create the
optimum profile of the seat and back, and to identify the
perfect position for the arms and the adjustment controls
of the chair. The unique curvature of these components,
combined with the substantial molded foam padding,
provide a "wrap-around" feel to Start, and the extensive
height adjustability of the back allows the lumbar to be
customized to any user in a matter of seconds.

Does the world really need another task chair? We think so – only it needs a chair that is different. The result of a
comprehensive design process, Start has been created to break out of the mold of typical run-of-the-mill task seating.
We started with comfort and ergonomics as the baseline criteria for the Start design. Working with one of the world’s
premier task seating designers, we identified through extensive testing several elements that would make Start uniquely
comfortable, supportive and user-friendly – for a wide range of potential users. We built Start for people of different
shapes and sizes, and for people who may use a chair in a multitude of ways.

Arm Height Adjustment
Back Tilt Adjustment
By lifting the arm, the height-adjustable
mechanism can be locked in one of eight
settings over a range of 2.75 inches.
The button under the seat on the user’s left-hand side
activates the back-tilt adjustment. When in the open
position, the back will recline freely with a total range of
motion of 18 degrees. The back can be locked in the
upright and reclined positions.
Seat Height Adjustment
Tilt Tension Adjustment
The button under the seat on
the right side easily adjusts
the seat height up and down
through a range of 4.5 inches.
The tilt tension can be adjusted by turning the
knob located directly under the seat, providing a
range of tilt tension for a variety of user weights
and preferences.
Underside of seat
Back Height Adjustment
The underside of Start is neatly
contained in the one-piece
molded seat pan, concealing
the mechanism from view.
The back height adjustment is operated while in a seated
position. Place both hands on either side of the lower back
cushion and lift and click to the desired height. The back
height adjustment features 12 separate positions over a
range of 2.5 inches.

We also set out to create a chair that offered more styling
than is typically found in task seating, and its complementary guest seating. This is apparent in the chair’s unique
profile and curves, and in the excellent quality of its fit
and finish.
Start breaks the mold with its adjustment controls. Instead
of the typical hard-to-reach levers, Start has push button
controls that are positioned closer to the user. The mechanism – as with every single component down to the base
and casters – for Start is designed and made exclusively
for this chair, unlike most task chairs on the market. This
means that the mechanism is precisely engineered and
calibrated for the way Start moves and adjusts.
It is a permanent-contact mechanism that reclines while
the seat remains at a fixed angle. This means the user’s
feet are not raised off the floor when reclining. This type
of mechanism is simple and intuitive to operate – a departure from the complicated mechanisms on some task
chairs.
But don’t take our word for it. Sit in this chair, use it,
look at it. We think you’ll be impressed. We think you’ll
appreciate why we called this chair Start: because we
started where the beginning should be, studying user
wants and needs, studying other products on the market,
and built a great new chair from the ground up. Start
represents a step forward in the evolution of task seating.
