Designed from the ground up for the embedded marketplace, Windows CE combines an advanced, real-time embedded operating system with powerful tools for rapidly creating the next generation of smart, connected, small-footprint devices. With a complete operating system feature set and comprehensive development tools, Windows CE contains the features your developers need to build, debug and deploy customized devices. What is “Microsoft Windows Embedded”? Windows Embedded is a family of operating system software and tool sets from Microsoft for use in such computer devices as cash registers, automated teller machines (ATMs), industrial controllers, gateways, Internet Protocol (IP) telephones, server appliances, Windows-based thin clients, advanced consumer electronics, specialized handheld devices, and other control systems, i.e. to optimize resource management. Typically, embedded computing refers to any computer system or computing device that performs a dedicated function or is designed for use with a specific embedded software application. These are systems that the end user typically cannot modify. Embedded operating systems are usually highly customized for a specific task or function. They may be optimized for specialized hardware or a specific application. Since the configuration can be “locked down” and therefore rigorously tested, manufacturers of these systems can control costs and deliver highly reliable devices optimized for specialized tasks. The componentized features in Windows CE are optimized for next-generation devices that require rich networking and communications standards, a hard real-time kernel, rich multimedia and Web browsing capabilities and smaller footprints. Popular device categories for building operating systems using Windows XP Embedded include personal digital assistants, industrial automation equipment, residential gateways, and consumer electronics such as CD players, digital cameras, and networked DVD players. Windows XP Embedded is the embedded operating system that delivers the power of the Windows operating system in componentized form. Based on the same binaries as Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Embedded contains over 10,000 individual feature components, so developers can choose and achieve optimum functionality while managing or reducing the footprint in a customized device image. Based on the Win32 programming model, Windows XP Embedded reduces time-to-market because it uses familiar development tools, works with commodity PC hardware, and seamlessly integrates desktop applications. Many OEMs are opting for mobile device-based systems such as PDAs or smart-phones. The smart combination and integration of technologies such as GPS (positioning by satellite), GSM wireless technology and the mobile Internet in vehicle networks is making navigation services affordable to an increasing number of users. Generating complex HMIs with tresos GUIDE Human machine interfaces (HMIs) are playing an increasingly important role in the automotive sector. They are designed as a central control element in the vehicle, providing the user with an array of critical functionalities. HMIs are also designed to have a great bearing on the look and feel of the vehicle’s interior. As such, they also help reinforce product and brand identity. Infotainment components in cars are usually complex distributed software systems that are specified by the manufacturer and realized by a number of subcontractors. The consistency of the control logic and design must be guaranteed across an entire range of models. Yet changes can still be made to the specification right up to the start of production. All this can be achieved with tresos GUIDE, the XML-based HMI tool by 3SOFT, which supports the entire process chain perfectly. The fruit of 3SOFT’s cumulative automotive experience, tresos GUIDE is better suited to the requirements of this sector than any other comparable product on the market. 14 www.3SOFT.de 3SOFT has extensive experience in developing navigation solutions. When it comes to the CX1000 PC-based embedded controller from Beckhoff, the answer is an unequivocal “yes“, because the CX1000, which can now be found in the new hall of the Verkehrszentrum at Deutsches Museum, handles all aspects of building automation control in the museum. This proves that the device is indeed a “museum piece“, albeit a technologically very advanced one. The Verkehrszentrum comprises around 1000 relays for PC sockets, lighting, heating (bright radiator) and ventilation flaps, all of which were realised using Beckhoff control technology . The building automation system is based on three modular, top hat rail-mountable Beckhoff CX1000 embedded PCs, each linked to approx. 180 input/output bus terminals. • The CX1000 device series from Beckhoff is designed for control tasks in the automation sector. It is a modular control system that can be mounted on top-hat rails. • Existing applications include mechanical engineering, process technology, building and home automation and many more. The PC-based control system offers obvious benefits: operation is significantly simpler, and it is also much easier to install new programs. A single computer deals with the control of a whole sector. In addition, PC technology facilitates the integration of the three building services sections. The CX1000 computers also run pre-processing functions for the visualisation software. The operating software was realised using Microsoft .NET technology and programmed in C#. The parameters or allocations are saved in XML format. When the configuration is changed at the control PC, the data are transferred to the CX1000 controller via TwinCAT ADS and saved continually. The company was confident that the graphical aspect of a Windows operating system was familiar enough for users to adapt to the input consoles quickly. Alternatives on the market had elements of each of these factors, but the Windows solution was the only one that combined them all.” Synaps Using Microsoft® Windows® CE .NET 4.2, Chaveriat Robotique has designed Synaps, an innovative interface based on familiar Windows technology. The Synaps system acts both as a software PLC and a robot console, the operator uses the ergonomic interface to program the robot “in situ”, and the robust Windows CE multi-tasking allows a 24 hours/day operation in rough production environments. The Synaps system has been operationnal on production sites since February 2004 (plastic industry), most of the systems run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The operators required a very low level of training, thanks to the graphical interface which was easily accepted because of its “Windows look & feel”. Thierry Joubert, Chief Technology Officer, Theoris “Stability has improved significantly as a result of moving to Windows CE .NET 4.2 because we can use modern hardware with the software, rather than relying on reconditioned units or patches to build our products. The use of micro clients/thin clients as HMIs – providing only the display and command input, while the application software runs on a central web or Windows server – allows for low maintenance and, at the same time, highly flexible use of these systems. Central administration and software maintenance, maximum data security, reliability and availability (low MTBF values) are achieved by avoiding the use of rotating mass storage media and fans. This also minimizes the total cost of ownership. Baumann GmbH, an international robotic systems integrator based in Amberg, Germany, chose Kontron’s M@C64 operator terminal with integrated graphical display for its ro|box assembly cells, replacing the traditionally separate display with mouse and keyboard. Although Baumann is currently using the M@C64 operator terminal purely as a visualization tool, it is planning to exploit the other functions of the micro client in future applications, for instance to integrate a soft PLC system for automation solutions. Baumann links the production cells to higher-level systems via Ethernet. The main advantages of the new operator terminal are the reduced space requirement in the production cell compared with the previous operator console, plus significant cost savings. Important criteria in the selection process for the operator terminal were the overall size and installation depth (compact dimensions were critical), the resolution (640 x 480 standard VGA was required) and, of course, the price. Windows XP Embedded was selected as the most suitable operating system for Baumann’s application. Because Baumann’s machines need to run without fail 24 hours a day, reliability was an important factor in the decision-making process. 44 www.kontron.com 45 The days when one company could do everything successfully are long gone. Successful companies are those that concentrate on their core competences and use complementary services from partner companies to provide greater benefits to their customers. This is a challenge as well as an opportunity for OEMs. Server Appliances based on Windows Server System products offer OEMs an exciting additional sales opportunity. Server Appliances are a powerful answer to the question of how to “do more with less”. 80-81 82-83 84-85 86-87 88-89 90-93 Companies and solutions presented in this chapter Fujitsu Siemens Computers Hewlett-Packard NICE Systems Pyramid VALHAL WORTMANN 78 Embedded Server Portfolio Microsoft Embedded provides you with the following product categories: SECURITY APPLIANCES – Firewall, VPN and Web Caching Microsoft’s Internet Security & Acceleration Server 2004 offers you an application layer filtering software that offers easiest integration into Exchange OWA and Web Caching for an aggressive pricing policy in multiple Embedded SKUs (Stock Keeping Units). The appliance version provides additional hardening tools. Embedded Server Value Propositions Thanks to the increased success of OEM, the embedded server business is now growing rapidly. Feedback that Microsoft has received from OEMs about what makes this offering so successful includes: CAL-free The embedded server offers significantly longer product availability and secures your investment. With one exception (Windows servers with embedded restrictions), all embedded server products come with an unlimited number of client access licenses. End customers don’t have to worry about licensing. Additional tools & features STORAGE APPLIANCES – NAS The Windows Storage Server 2003 is the (unit) market-leading (IDC, 2004) platform for Network Attached Storage. It offers customization tools to add OEM brand, heterogeneous file support, volume shadow copy integration (“snapshots”), Exchange DB storage, iSCSI (Initiator), Distributed File System (virtualization and replication) and highest value for money. Most embedded server products offer you customization to add functionality and to put your brand into prominent places at the screen. Customization One of the biggest advantages that we always hear from our OEMs is that the time-to-market with Microsoft Embedded Servers is so short that other considerations simply don’t make sense when the very low Total Cost of Ownership is taken into consideration. TTM and TCO Integrating the OS (and sometimes the application) into your solutions gives you the opportunity to generate additional revenue. OEM embedded channel pricing is low to offer you a good margin. Additionally, embedded servers are additional service revenue enablers for many OEMs. Revenue Generation Many embedded server products (e.g. Storage, ISA) offer additional tools and features that make embedded appliances very compelling. On top, the Windows Storage Server 2003 is only available in this channel. Longer Lifecycle RECOVERY APPLIANCES – D2D2T The Data Protection Manager 2006 enables disk-based backup and file recovery. It provides a seamless integration of repad and reliable recovery with Disk-to-Disk-to-Tape, continuous, efficient protection and best value. Thanks to backup automation, backup verification and very fast recovery, it provides a very low TCO. TELEPHONY APPLIANCES – PBX, Unified Messaging, Switches, Networking Microsoft offers a special Telephony SKU with telephony restrictions and better pricing for the Windows Server 2003. This SKU is embraced by many leading Network Equipment Providers and offers best value for Telephony Appliances. MISCELLANEOUS APPLIANCES – Antivirus, Cryptography, Video Server, Streaming Server, Information Server With SKUs for clustered and non-clustered, headless and non-headless embedded servers, Microsoft offers SKUs for your business appliances that offer you all the benefits of the embedded server channel. Your distributor will help you to identify the SKU you need. Pricing The embedded server SKUs are priced low to help OEMs integrate server technology and generate a good margin. This comes on top of the CAL-freeness. 79 80 • Fujitsu Siemens Computers provides an impressive range of information technology designed for powerful IT infrastructures. • Fujitsu Siemens Computers has a strong focus on mobility and business-critical computing – two key issues in today’s information age. www.fujitsu-siemens.com As a leading European IT manufacturer and the market leader in Germany, Fujitsu Siemens Computers is aware that it has a very special kind of responsibility. This unique fusion eliminates storage islands and reduces overall management complexity and costs. NAS/SAN fusion environments – based on MSA 1000 or MSA 1500 arrays – leverage HP Smart Array technology and offer full monitoring and management integration in HP Systems Insight Manager. This enables both your NAS server and SAN storage to be managed in one single tool. Larger SAN environments, especially those with EVA and XP storage arrays, use special storage management tools for enhanced monitoring capabilities. For example, HP Storage Essentials can monitor the entire storage infrastructure, from logical volumes, HBAs and the fabric infrastructure to the storage hardware within the array. Integrated SAN monitoring and management Besides streamlining the process of server configuration, integrating NAS into Systems Insight Manager allows you to analyze your system and initiate management tasks remotely with tools such as a web-based user interface, Terminal Services, command line, the Microsoft management console (MMC) and integrated Lights-Out management (iLO). Beckhoff embedded PCs integrate PC technology and a modular I/O layer as a compact unit mounted on the top-hat rail. In addition to increased CPU power, the CX1020 also has a direct connection for EtherCAT I/O terminals. In combination with EtherCAT as the field bus, response times under a millisecond enable a multitude of new applications and process improvements. Compared to the CX1000 introduced at the Hannover Fair three years ago, which boasted an AMD geode with 266 MHz on the inside, the CX1020 has an Intel Celeron-M CPU clocked at 600 MHz on board. The CX1020 is fanless and – thanks to the use of Compact Flash as the boot and storage medium – has no rotating media. The enclosure and mounting concept of the CX1020 is modular, as it is for all CX controller PCs. The basic CPU module is equipped with two Ethernet ports with an integrated 3-port switch, designed to set up a line topology for several controllers, for example. If desired, other system interfaces, such as DVI/USB, audio and up to four RS232 or RS422/RS485 interfaces can be added optionally to the CX1020. The same master and slave component groups as for the CX1000 have been used on the field bus side for PROFIBUS, CANopen, DeviceNet, Lightbus and the SERCOS interface. The Beckhoff EtherCAT terminals are connected via the new, multi-functional power supply. EtherCAT as a high-speed I/O system As a PC mounted on the top-hat rail, the CX1020 – in combination with the Beckhoff TwinCAT software – functions in the same way as a large industrial PC. In SPS up to four virtual IEC 61131 CPUs can be programmed with up to four tasks each; the shortest cycle time available is 50 microseconds. All the TwinCAT functionalities are also available for motion control: up to 256 axles can be controlled and in addition to simple point-to-point movements, more complex multiple axle functions, such as the “electronic gear”, the “cam disk” and the “flying saw” can be performed, too. The CX1020 is also capable of interpolated 3D path movement and can execute DIN66025 programs. SPS, motion control, interpolation and visualization Further EtherCAT devices are connected via the E-Bus extension terminal. EtherCAT performance, in combination with high-speed CPU processing, opens up new application options: an SPS task with a cycle time of 100 microseconds, for example, is always able to process each process image as it is updated. The CX1020 can be run on the Microsoft Windows CE or Windows XP Embedded operating systems. 113 114 Revolutionary new sewing and embroidering system that’s “sew” easy to use This new machine makes sewing, embroidering, quilting and patchworking easier than ever before. With its motto of "Smarter Retail Solutions", Bizerba offers users in the retail industry innovative solutions to boost sales and increase process reliability and to streamline business processes. www.bizerba.com Open Systems Thanks to the OpenSystem technology concept, which goes far beyond the system limits, Bizerba offers the retail market a high degree of flexibility and standardization in the implementation of all function and system requirements, which makes for high investment security. This concept is the basis for many applications: process-optimized stocktaking, automatic user identification and optical item recognition, e-service with e-installation, e-updating and e-service for error diagnosis. Visual merchandising makes completely new applications and areas of use possible, with individual screen and label design, attractive and effective POS advertising and the intelligent opportunities offered by cross and e-selling. E-learning, security and customer loyalty systems are other features that the Bizerba OpenSystems technology concept offers. Bizerba GmbH & Co. KG • Wilhelm-Kraut-Str. 65 • 72336 Balingen • Germany Tel. 07433/12-0 • Fax 07433/12-2696 • [email protected] Visual Solutions Optical item recognition, using highly modern CE system weigh scales, increases user convenience and decreases inventory differences. Thanks to the built-in camera, the scale is able to identify the product being weighed without any other input from the customer and automatically produces the correct price sticker. Another advantage: there is no need to have operator keys and there is more room for quickly moving item keys. Bizerba offers this technology for the open CE scales and cash register platform. Automatic operator recognition on the basis of RFID technology provides for greater security and convenience in sales and materials handling. The scale reads the transponder chip that the salesperson wears on their wrist or clipped to their clothing. This eliminates having to press the operator key on the scale, increases service speed and enhances reliability at the same time. Intentional and unintentional mistakes are no longer possible, thus reducing inventory differences. And the customer no longer finds any items on the receipt that he didn’t purchase. RFID This automatic identification function relieves the customer of an additional task and also prevents any manipulation during the weighing process. This will make the more complicated use of printed pictograms obsolete. Wireless With intelligent wireless solutions to transmit data, Bizerba scales/cash register systems operate without cords. Wireless operation offers significant business advantages and increases mobility and independence. The Bizerba solution as an integrated system is easily configured via the scale/cash register menu and operates with a standard wireless PCMCIA card, integrated high-powered antennas based on the IEEE 802.11b standard, with LEP or WEP encoding. If necessary, communication is also possible without the access point in ad-hoc mode. Using wireless technology such as this, scales and cash registers communicate directly with the central merchandise handling system to quickly deliver all the current sales information. Wireless solutions make it possible to build mobile sales stands at any particular location in and in front of the supermarket/store. Flexible POS placement increases the attraction, draws customers, yields additional sales and enhances the market’s overall profitability. Rational, customer-friendly “all-round” service is an important wireless feature. 117 118 E-Monitoring With the “video journal” function, Bizerba offers an interesting new option for identifying inventory differences for all Ethernet-enabled scales and cash registers like the highly modernized CE models. In this case, a video camera at the cash register/scale records the purchase process. The pictures contain all the relevant data, such as the date, the time, the salesperson, the item and the price or the sum total. These video stream records are valuable, legally binding documents. www.bizerba.com E-Service E-service successfully reduces the Total Costs of Ownership (TCO). Most importantly, it makes it possible to check and correct data and settings, to set up automatic processes, to alter key allocations, to retrieve information on the current programming and to quickly diagnose problems to reduce service calls. It is quick and easy to update programs, install new features or adapt and optimize labels, receipts and key allocations – even for extensive chain stores with many different outlets. The systems in several hundred branch offices can be updated automatically in a single night. Feedback is available via the home page on the scale. It includes a device information page indicating the device history with the last 50 updates and log files. All the CE scales and cash registers as well as the products from almost all segments are equipped with the important e-service features. Packing Solutions Store Management Solutions Efficient store and sales management with transparent good and cash flows allows for quick action. The WinCWS® merchandise information system offers detailed sales reporting with sales development, branch office control by specific intervals, product range, sales outlet, salespersons and customers. Other features include cash register controlling with an informative comparison of items sold and actual cash balance as well as an option for staff planning on the basis of a time-based sales analysis. With its permanently available management information, WinCWS® contributes significantly to reliable pricing. Modern communications technology and LAN or WAN networks allow decentralized work on a central server with Windowsbased terminals and terminal servers as well as the flexible control of mobile sales vehicles. Service areas must remain attractive to the consumers and creative new product ideas can successfully exploit the trend towards the increasing demand for convenience products. The Bizerba system-enabled BP 900 packing station is the answer to these needs. The very compact MAP device (630 x 600 x 1800 mm) consisting of a protective gas packing unit, a CE system scale and an integrated label printer for sales promotional labeling is mobile on four wheels. The packing station reveals its particular strengths in new offers for all product ranges. This solution is particularly interesting for convenience foods for the microwave, for delicatessen salads, for garnished cheese or ham trays, for fish and other specialties or for ready-to-eat fruit and vegetables. 119 120 With Synaps, Chaveriat Robotique can now stand out in a very specialized market, which is helping the company gain market share. We are currently selling about 100 robots a year, and that number would have been far smaller if we had not introduced Windows CE .NET 4.2 and the Synaps programming interface. www.chaveriat.fr Customer Solution Case Study Robot Manufacturer Wins Market Share Thanks to New Programming Interface For too long, programming tools for non-spherical robots, especially Cartesian robots, have been unable to incorporate all the innovations from the world of computing. With Synaps, Chaveriat Robotique has managed to fill the gap. This name describes a product which fulfils three roles simultaneously: it is a mobile command terminal, a man-machine interface and an industrial robot. The robotic arm industry might be relatively small, but it is highly competitive. Chaveriat Robotique has been steadily producing robots for over twenty years. The company has been producing the same user interface to program the robotic arms since the mid-eighties. Increasingly, however, it was finding that it was losing market share to competitors that had adopted modern graphical interface devices. As a result, it began to examine the market for an innovative replacement. The company rolled out Microsoft® Windows® CE .NET 4.2 running on handheld devices, which are used to program the robots.. Since the new interfaces became available at the beginning of 2004, the company has significantly increased its market share. Chaveriat Robotique 9, Quartier de Lizon - BP 11 • 39170 Lavans les Saint Claude • France Tel. +33 38 44 21 160 contact : [email protected] System development began early 2003, and the first of the new robots run by Synaps, the new Windows CE .NET 4.2-based input system, was installed in February 2004. “We concentrated on creating a prototype that was exactly what Chaveriat Robotique needed,” says Joubert. “The flexibility of Windows CE .NET 4.2 really helped us in this project because it let us respond the very specific needs of the industrial robotic sector.” Robotic arms tend to have their programs written on a PC and then downloaded to the input device. Chaveriat Robotique, however, saw that there was value in having an input device that was flexible enough to have programs written directly to it. The company is currently investigating the development of a PC-based tool that will let customers develop robot programs away from the actual production site. Benefits Bonin estimates that robots powered by Synaps are 10 per cent cheaper than predecessors, but they deliver 30 per cent more functionality. This makes the system significantly more competitive in the global markets, and customers benefit from being able to use the intuitive graphical user interface to program robots’ functions, enabling quicker programming and faster allocation of robots to new tasks. Using Windows CE .NET 4.2 ensures that Chaveriat Robotique does not run the risk of becoming caught with obsolete technology that is not being pushed forward. The flexibility of the Windows operating system lets the company continue to take advantage of developments in the market and constantly improve its offering. “Using a platform that is constantly evolving means we are constantly able to offer our customers the most up-to-data user interfaces. As a result they can improve their working processes,” says Bonin. “This enhances our reputation in the market and ensures that our customers have a positive experience.” “Stability has improved significantly as a result of moving to Windows CE .NET 4.2 because we can use modern hardware with the software, rather than relying on reconditioned units or patches to build our products,” says Bonin. “We have also become more competitive because we have a number of alternative suppliers so we can search out the cheapest price and pass that on to our customers. The majority of downtime is related to operator errors in robot programming. The new system is far better in this regard because it provides a faster diagnostic and reduced restart time after a problem.” With Synaps, Chaveriat Robotique can now stand out in a very specialized market, which is helping the company gain market share. “It is fair to say that Windows CE .NET 4.2 and Synaps have already helped Chaveriat Robotique consolidate and gain market share over the last year,” says Bonin. “We are currently selling about 100 robots a year, and that number would have been far smaller if we had not introduced the Synaps programming interface.” 121 122 About Datalogic Datalogic is the largest European manufacturer of CCD and laser-based bar code readers and mobile computers. Datalogic is represented in the promising RFID market via its subsidiary EMS Inc. (Scotts Valley California). It occupies a leading position in the automotive sector, among electronics manufacturers and in warehouse management systems (WMS). The impressive range of Datalogic products can satisfy any application need and has been setting industrial standards for more than 30 years. www.datalogic.com Shoreham port uses the Datalogic Viper™ RF mobile computers for its unique stock control system Shoreham is the premier Sussex port in the UK, a sprawling collection of open storage areas and sheds containing various cargoes received by ship for distribution by road or rail and goods received by road ready for export. Fast, efficient cargo handling and reliable distribution are key elements to Shoreham’s reputation for satisfying customer needs. Sussex Port Forwarding uses a stock control system based on barcode and RF technology to monitor stock records to the internet and facilitate total inventory visibility for “just-in-time“ deliveries. The system improves pack handling and identification coupled with improvements in stock control. Benefits come from the time saved by ensuring that all deliveries are correct at the time of leaving the harbour, and in the general running of the business, such as loading of lorries and finding timber when required, combined with better stock turnaround for the customer. The system consists of an extensive RF infrastructure coupled with Viper™ mobile computers, validating and uploading data into the main computer system. The sheer size of the areas that needed to be covered by RF proved to be the biggest challenge further complicated by the fact that there were four different locations separated by other businesses. The application solution involves total management and control of all stock items, giving full history on the items as soon as a shipping docket is received to inform SPF of a delivery due. All products stored at the site are bar-coded and their location around the site is tracked using this barcode. Datalogic S.p.A. The company set out to improve ease of use and enhance graphical capabilities by adding a color display. Both functions called for higher computing performance. The idea of connecting the VISUTRON to a conventional office computer was rejected during the planning phase. Instead, Möller-Wedel chose to work with emtrion and its family of standard HICO products. Emtrion, a technology company based in Karlsruhe, Germany, customized the Windows CE operating system to Möller-Wedel’s requirements to such an extent that users are not immediately aware they are working with a standard Windows operating system. With the new VISUTRON 900+, the number of control buttons has been reduced substantially. Operation of the test type projector is nevertheless fully integrated, giving users a piece of specialty equipment that is easier than ever to operate. Windows functionality is still available, simplifying examinations and making it easier to configure system parameters. As in previous projects, emtrion focused on the hardware and the programming, allowing Möller-Wedel to concentrate on developing the actual application. Emtrion’s typical lean style of communication, with continuous and direct interaction between Möller-Wedel’s and emtrion’s product development departments, once again proved highly effective. 127 128 Gizmondo is the most powerful multientertainment handheld there is Gizmondo Europe Ltd. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Tiger Telematics Inc. The company specialises in network and multi-port connectivity solutions. It is managed by Michel NILLE, employs a workforce of 18 and has thirty or so distributors and more than 750,000 users world-wide. www.itechno.com IMPACT Technologies announces that Mobil’Itium is now available for Itium thin clients Mobil’Itium is a tool used to help roll out Itium thin client terminals, and it also provides configuration support for mobile users. Mobil’Itium makes it possible for administrators to store Itium thin client configuration profiles on a Flash USB memory key. The administrator can then roll out one of the profiles by inserting the key in the USB port of the Itium thin client terminal to be configured. A user-friendly interface allows the new configuration profile to be copied from the key to the thin client terminal. For mobile users, Mobil’Itium means a user’s session profile can be stored on a Flash USB memory key together with the relevant authentication data (login, passwords, domain). The authentication data is encrypted on the USB key and protected by a PIN code. When the key is inserted, the configuration is loaded automatically into the Itium thin client and the user finds his/her usual working environment immediately. When the key is removed, any active sessions are disconnected and deleted from the thin client which reverts to its initial configuration. IMPACT Technologies • ZA de Courtaboeuf • 6, rue de l’Acadie 91953 Les Ulis Cedex • France Itium thin client terminals find their place at the hairdresser’s MEDIA Logs, a French company specialising in computerised management for hairdressers and beauty institutes and other applications recently opted to use IMPACT Technologies’ Itium thin client terminals. Média Logs offers online software in ASP mode (Application Server Provider) tailored to meet the needs of the hairdressing profession. The architecture for this package is based on: • the installation of Itium thin client terminals with Windows CE, supplied by IMPACT Technologies, allowing an RDP session to be opened on the MEDIA Logs ASP servers in the hairdressers’ establishments • a trade software program, Média coif, housed by an application server in a secure technical centre or Data Centre • the installation of lines connecting the hairdressing establishments to the Data Centre Choosing Itium thin client terminals combined with the use of the ASP mode gives users the following advantages: • Easy installation and rollout, centralised administration • Consolidation in real time: because the data is centralised, consolidation between all the establishments in the same group is immediate • Modifications: with thin client architecture only the server part needs to be upgraded, independently of the terminals, thus facilitating trade software updates • Security: since the data is stored on the servers, the Itium thin client terminals offer maximum security and efficient protection against hackers and viruses • Reliability: thanks to their design with no moving parts (neither disk nor fan), Itium thin client terminals have an average failure record 4 to 5 times better than that of a PC. The vast majority of peripheral equipment used in hairdressers’ salons is both compatible and connectable to IMPACT Technologies’ Itium thin client terminals (printers, touch screens, triggerless bar code scanners, payment terminals, etc). In addition, the system supplier is able to integrate Windows CE on a variety of devices. Various Windows CE devices, the Siemens SimPAD and the Olivetti Internet telephone are just three examples of leading products whose development began on the drawing boards of Keith & Koep GmbH. www.keith-koep.com Compatibility that saves money: Keith & Koep’s modular Trizeps CPU strategy Based on XScale technology, running under Windows CE and designed for compatability, embedded Trizeps CPU modules make long product life cycles possible even during times of rapid technological change. System updates and maintenance during the life cycle of embedded systems are thus less expensive and provide effective protection for business investments. The new Trizeps-IV XScale PXA270 CPU module brings Keith & Koep a major step nearer to its stated goal of ensuring system compatibility across all the products in its Trizeps CPU module family. Trizeps technology is a modular embedded system design based on an Intel ® XScale microprocessor architecture and designed for such operating systems as Microsoft® Windows® CE. Keith & Koep GmbH have been meeting this challenge for years by rigorously designing system-level software with compatibility in mind. The fruit of their labors is theTrizeps CPU module family. Business partners for products and services: Mr. Keith and Mr. Koep Keith & Koep GmbH • Königsberger Straße 2 • 42277 Wuppertal Tel: +49 (202) 2525-30 • Fax: +49 (202) 2525-333 • [email protected] 139 Trizeps-IV, the newest, most flexible CPU module generation based on the Intel PXA270 CPU Trizeps-III heralded the introduction of USB 2.0 and Ethernet 100/10-MBit interfaces, followed by 4 serial interfaces, FFunction-UART, HW-UART, IrDA-UART and Bluetooth-UART, the AC97 audio module, the LC display controller, the SD/MMC and the PCMCIA/CF card interface. Compatibility within the Trizeps family As a result, the Trizeps-III Classic, the Trizeps-III K3 with the new Trizeps-IV module and its derivatives are interchangeable. An embedded system that today works with a Trizeps-III system under Windows CE 3.0 can therefore be upgraded with the new Trizeps-IV technology, bringing it into line with the state of the art and considerably prolonging its product life cycle. Such astute investment in new technologies combines with longer product life cycles to yield considerable cost savings for operators of embedded computer systems. 140 Embedded system supplier Keith & Koep introduces new version of the Trizeps system module! Keith & Koep GmbH proudly presents a new member of its Intel XScale-based Trizeps system module. The newcomer will be released to coincide with Embedded World 2005. The new Trizeps-IV module is based on an XScale PXA270 CPU and is compatible with Trizeps-III technology. The Trizeps product family has a modular embedded system design and is built for such operating systems as Microsoft® Windows® CE. High growth predicted for operation, observation and complex data exchange applications Combined with infotainment functions, these systems can also tap into consumer markets. Other areas for which high growth is forecast include applications that place very heavy demands on graphical capabilities in medical technology, the gaming sector, and security applications that provide video surveillance for high-security facilities and public areas. Developers are looking for high system performance and low power consumption for the applications involved. A selection of the new technologies that confront developers today are outlined below. CPU technologies based on the example of the Intel XScale PXA270 CPU This CPU supports multimedia data processing (including MP3 and MPEG encoding) on embedded devices while optimizing power consumption. For mobile applications, Intel supplies developers with Wireless Intel SpeedStep® technology to optimize CPU power consumption in light of operating requirements. Memory technologies In addition to the traditional NOR Flash components, memory manufacturers are increasingly also offering NAND Flash technology. The aim is to maximize integration density for an ever greater number of peripheral functions in as little space as possible. Many such functions, including LAN, Bluetooth, audio, USB client and host, card interfaces and video controllers, are already firmly established in embedded designs. Software technologies Examples include Intel Power Management technologies for the PXA270 processors and bad-block algorithms for NAND Flash memories. As a rule, mobile embedded devices use operating systems to organize the system and as interfaces for applications. “Our Trizeps-IV system is the fourth member of the Trizeps product family that we have brought to market“. www.keith-koep.com Embedded system supplier Keith & Koep introduces a new “embedded industrial terminal” for Intel XScale-PXA architectures Keith & Koep GmbH has now introduced a new baseboard for its Trizeps-III XScale PXA255 CPU module.
