important f rom both the work ing and natural environment viewpoints. Since all types of
conventional electricity g eneration have a neg ative ef f ect on the environment (acidic and
climate-inf luencing emissions, radioactive waste, etc.) it is vital to conserve energ y. Electronic
eq uipment in of f ices consumes an enormous amount of energ y, since it is of ten routinely lef t
running continuously.
What does labelling involve?
This product meets the req uirements f or the TCO' 9 5 scheme, which provides f or international
environmental labelling of monitors. The labelling scheme was developed as a j oint ef f ort by the
TCO (The Swedish Conf ederation of Prof essional Employees), Natursk yddsf orening en (The
Swedish Society f or Nature Conservation) and NUTEK (The National Board f or Industrial and
Technical Development in Sweden).
The req uirements cover a wide rang e of issues: environment, erg onomics, usability, emission
of electrical and mag netic f ields, energ y consumption and electrical and f ire saf ety.
The environmental demands concern among other thing s restrictions on the presence and use
of heavy metals, brominated and chlorinated f lame retardants, CFCs (f reons), and chlorinated
solvents. The product must be prepared f or recycling and the manuf acturer is oblig ed to have
an environmental plan, which must be adhered to in each country where the company conducts
its operations policy. The energ y req uirements include a demand that the monitor af ter a certain
period of inactivity shall reduce its power consumption to a lower level, in one or more stag es.
The leng th of time to reactivate the monitor shall be reasonable f or the user.
L abelled products must meet strict environmental demands, f or ex ample in respect of the
reduction of electric and mag netic f ields, along with physical and visual erg onomics and g ood
usability.

Brominated f lame retardants are present in printed circuit boards, cables, wires, casing s and
housing s. In turn, they delay the spread of f ire. Up to thirty percent of the plastic in a computer
casing can consist of f lame retardant substances. These are related to another g roup of
environmental tox ins, PCBs, which are suspected to g ive rise to similar harm, including
reproductive damag e in f ish eating birds and mammals, due to the bioaccumulative processes.
Flame retardants have been f ound in human blood and researchers f ear that disturbances in
f oetus development may occur.
z TCO' 9 5 demand req uires that plastic components weig hing more than 25 g rams must not
contain org anically bound chlorine and bromine.
Lead
L ead can be f ound in picture tubes, display screens, solders and capacitors. L ead damag es the
nervous system and in hig her doses, causes lead poisoning .
TCO' 9 5 req uirement Permits the inclusion of lead since no replacement has yet been
developed.

Cadmium
Cadmium is present in recharg eable batteries and in the colour g enerating layers of certain
computer displays. Cadmium damag es the nervous system and is tox ic in hig h doses.
TCO' 9 5 req uirement states that batteries may not contain more than 25 ppm (parts per
million) of cadmium. The colour-g enerating layers of display screens must not contain any
cadmium.

Mercury
Mercury is sometimes f ound in batteries, relays and switches. Mercury damag es the nervous
system and is tox ic in hig h doses.
TCO' 9 5 req uirement states that batteries may not contain more than 25 ppm (parts per

substances are used both in the products and during their manuf acture. Since it is not so f ar
possible to satisf actorily recycle the maj ority of electronics eq uipment, most of these potentially
damag ing substances sooner or later enter nature.
There are also other characteristics of a computer, such as energ y consumption levels, that are
important f rom the viewpoints of both the work (internal) and natural (ex ternal) environments.
Since all methods of electricity g eneration have a neg ative ef f ect on the environment (e.g .
acidic and climate-inf luencing emissions, radioactive waste), it is vital to save energ y.
Electronics eq uipment in of f ices is of ten lef t running continuously and thereby consumes a lot of
energ y.

Environmental requirements
Flame retardants

Their purpose is to prevent, or at least to delay the spread of f ire. Up to 3 0% of the plastic in a
computer casing can consist of f lame retardant substances. Most f lame retardants contain
bromine or chloride, and those f lame retardants are chemically related to another g roup of
environmental tox ins, PCBs. Both the f lame retardants containing bromine or chloride and the
PCBs are suspected of g iving rise to severe health ef f ects, including reproductive damag e in
f ish-eating birds and mammals, due to the bio-accumulative* processes. Flame retardants have
been f ound in human blood and researchers f ear that disturbances in f oetus development may
occur.
The relevant TCO' 9 9 demand req uires that plastic components weig hing more than 25 g rams
must not contain f lame retardants with org anically bound bromine or chlorine. Flame retardants
are allowed in the printed circuit boards since no substitutes are available.
Cadmium**

and is tox ic in hig h doses. The relevant TCO' 9 9 req uirement states that batteries may not
contain any mercury. It also demands that mercury is not present in any of the electrical or
electronics components associated with the labelled unit. There is however one ex ception.
Mercury is, f or the time being , permitted in the back lig ht system of f lat panel monitors as today
there is no commercially available alternative. TCO aims on removing this ex ception when a
Mercury f ree alternative is available.
CFCs (freons)
