You must read them carefully before installing or using the appliance. • Leave the porthole door slightly ajar when the appliance is not in use. This preserves the door seal and prevents the formation of musty smells. Installation • All internal packing must be removed before using the appliance. Serious damage may be caused to the machine or adjacent furniture if the protective transit devices are not removed or are not completely removed. Refer to the relevant paragraph in the instruction book. • Always check that water has emptied out before opening the door. If not, drain the water following the instructions in the instruction book. • Always unplug the appliance and shut the water tap after use. • Any electrical work required to install this appliance must be carried out by a qualified electrician. General safety • Any plumbing work required to install this appliance must be carried out by a qualified plumber. • After having installed the machine, check that it is not standing on its electrical supply cable. • Repairs to the machine must be carried out only by qualified personnel. Repairs carried out by inexperienced persons could cause serious danger. Contact your local Service Centre. • If the appliance is placed on a carpeted floor, ensure that air can circulate freely between the feet and the floor. • Never pull the power supply cable to remove the plug from the socket; always take hold of the plug itself. Use • During high temperature wash programmes the door glass may get hot. Do not touch it! • This appliance is designed for domestic use. It must not be used for purposes other than those for which it was designed. • Only wash fabrics which are designed to be machine washed. Follow the instructions on each garment label. • Do not overload the appliance. Follow the instructions in the instruction book. • Make sure that all pockets are empty. Objects such as coins, safety pins, pins and screws can cause extensive damage. • Do not machine wash garments saturated with petroleum, methylated spirits, trichlorethylene, etc. If such fluids have been used to remove stains prior to washing, wait until they have completely evaporated from the fabric before placing garments in the appliance. • Place small items such as socks, belts, etc. in a cloth bag or pillowcase to prevent them getting trapped between the drum and the tub. • Use only the recommended quantities of fabric softener. An excessive amount could damage the laundry. 4 2-10-2001 8:34 Pagina 5 Child safety • Keep all detergents in a safe place out of children’s reach. • Children are often not aware of how dangerous electrical appliances can be. When the machine is working, children should be carefully supervised and not be allowed to play with the appliance. • Make sure that children or pets do not climb into the drum. • When the appliance is to be scrapped, cut off the electrical supply cable and destroy the plug with the remaining cable. Disable the door catch in order to prevent children from becoming trapped inside while playing. • The packaging components (e.g. plastic film, polystyrene) can be dangerous to children - danger of suffocation! Set the machine upright and remove the two remaining bolts from the back. 7. Pull out the three plastic spacers from the holes into which the bolts were fitted. All transit bolts and packing must be removed before using the appliance. 8. Plug all the holes with the plugs which you will find in the plastic envelope containing the instruction booklet. You are advised to keep all transit devices so that they can be refitted if the machine ever has to be transported again. 1. Using a spanner, unscrew and remove the rear right-hand bolt and lay the machine on its back, taking care not to squash the hoses. This can be avoided by placing one of the corner packing pieces between the machine and the floor. P0256 P0020 Positioning Install the machine on a flat hard floor. Make sure that air circulation around the machine is not impeded by carpets, rugs etc. Check that the machine does not touch the wall or other kitchen units. Carefully level by screwing the adjustable feet in or out. Never place cardboard, wood or similar materials under the machine to compensate for any unevenness in the floor. P0255 2. Run it along the floor; only the part near the drainage point must be raised. Connect the water inlet hose to a tap with a 3/4" thread . The other end of the inlet hose which connects to the machine can be turned in any direction. Simply loosen the fitting, rotate the hose and retighten the fitting, making sure there are no water leaks. P0023 Electrical connection P1088 This machine is designed to operate on a 220-230 V, single-phase, 50 Hz supply. P0021 The inlet hose must not be lengthened. If it is too short and you do not wish to move the tap, you will have to purchase a new, longer hose specially designed for this type of use. Check that your domestic electrical installation can take the maximum load required (2.2 kW), also taking into account any other appliances in use. Connect the machine to an earthed socket. Water drainage The manufacturer declines any responsibility for damage or injury through failure to comply with the above safety precaution. Should the appliance power supply cable need to be replaced, this should be carried out by our Service Centre. The end of the drain hose can be positioned in three ways: Hooked over the edge of a sink using the plastic hose guide supplied with the machine. In this case, make sure the end cannot come unhooked when the machine is emptying. This could be done by tying it to the tap with a piece of string or attaching it to the wall. P0022 In a sink drain pipe branch. This branch must be above the trap so that the bend is at least 60 cm above the ground. Directly into a drain pipe at a height of not less than 60 cm and not more than 90 cm. The end of the drain hose must always be ventilated, i.e. the inside diameter of the drain pipe must be larger than the outside diameter of the drain hose. 8 2-10-2001 8:34 Pagina 9 Building-in b) Hinges This appliance has been designed to be built into the kitchen furniture. The recess should have the dimensions shown in picture A. To mount the hinges it is necessary to drill two holes (dia. 35 mm, depth 14 mm) on the inner side of the door. The distance between the holes must be 416 mm. In this case it is sufficient to screw in the hinges (1) and the counter-magnet (6) provided with the appliance, at the right level (Fig. B). 598 595- P0026 C c) Mounting the door 6 1 1 Fix the hinges to the machine by means of the M5x8 screws (3-Fig. B). The hinges can be adjusted to compensate for possible uneven thickness of the door. To enable a correct operation of this device, it is necessary to screw the counter-magnet (6) (steel disk + rubber ring) into the inner side of the door. Mount the countermagnet (6) and the hinges (1) as previously described. No spin 3 ON/OFF button By selecting this option the spinning phases are suppressed. Press this button to switch the machine on. Press it again to switch the machine off. This function is not available for cotton and linen. To be selected for extremely delicate items. Programme Option buttons Depending on the programme, different functions can be combined. These must be selected after choosing the desired programme and before depressing the START/PAUSE button. When these buttons are pressed, the corresponding pilot lights come on. When they are pressed again, the pilot lights go out. If an incorrect option is selected, the corresponding pilot light flashes for about 2 seconds. 5 Prewash button The machine performs a prewash cycle at 30°C max. The prewash cycle ends with a short spin at 650 r.p.m. in programmes for Cotton and Synthetics, and with emptying of the water for Delicates. This option is not available with the wool programme. For use when washing heavily soiled laundry. 6 Quick wash button 4 Spin speed button By pressing this button the washing time is reduced as follows: Press this button to reduce the maximum speed of the final speed proposed by the machine for the selected programme or to select position (no spin). The light corresponding to the selected option illuminates. • 57 minutes for cotton 95°C • 63 minutes for cotton 60°C • 24 minutes for synthetics • 8 minutes for delicates Spin speed This option is not available with the wool programme and the Energy saving programme. The following speeds are available for the different fabrics: To be used for lightly soiled laundry. 12 2-10-2001 8:34 Pagina 13 7 Anti-crease button Draining of water/spin When this button is pressed, the last rinse water is not emptied out, to prevent the fabrics from creasing. When the programme has finished, the pilot light of the START/PAUSE button flashes to indicate that the water must be emptied out. By depressing the Start/Pause button • The water of programme (Soak) is emptied out • The water of the last rinse on programmes with Anti-crease option is emptied out and the laundry is spun. To empty out water there are 3 possibilities: • Select programme (draining): The water is emptied out without spinning. 10 Programme progress display Attention! Before selecting programme the selector dial has to be positioned on X (cancelling). By selecting the wash programme, the pilot lights corresponding to the various phases making up the programme come on. • Depress START/PAUSE button : after emptying, the machine performs the spin cycle corresponding to the type of fabric previously selected. After the machine has started, only the running phase pilot light stays on. When the programme has finished, the End pilot light comes on. • Select the spin speed by means of the relevant button and then depress the START/PAUSE button. The machine empties itself after 18 hours. 8 Extra rinse button Can be used with all programmes except the wool programme. The machine performs 4 rinses instead of 3. This option is recommended for people who are allergic to detergents and in areas where the water is very soft. The END pilot light flashes in the event of operating problems. At the same time one of the following lights starts to flash: 9 START/PAUSE button = the machine does not fill This button has three functions: Start - Pause - Draining of water / Spin. = the door has not been closed = the machine does not empty To eliminate the problem, see paragraph “Something not working”. Start If the pilot light flashes at the end of the programme this means that the drain filter must be cleaned. After having selected the required programme, press this button to start the machine; the corresponding pilot light stops flashing. The door light opened: Pause indicates if the door can be • Light on: the machine is functioning, but the door cannot be opened (see page 14). To interrupt a programme which is running, depress the Start/Pause button: the corresponding pilot light starts to flash. • Light off: the door can be opened (at the end of the cycle) or cannot be opened because the machine is functioning. To restart the programme from the point at which it was interrupted, press the START/PAUSE button again. • Light blinking: the machine is in PAUSE and the door cannot be opened. 13 ENGLISH 132996651•EW1232I•GB.qxd 132996651•EW1232I•GB.qxd 2-10-2001 8:34 Pagina 14 11 Programme selector dial Cancelling a programme Turn the selector dial to X to cancel a programme which is running. Now you can select a new programme. The selector is divided into 5 sections: • Cotton, linen • Synthetics Opening the door after the programme has started • Delicates • Woollens (hand washing) You can open the door, after having set the washing machine to PAUSE, provided the following conditions exist: • Special programmes • Reset programme X X • the washing machine is not in the heating phase beyond 40°C; 95º E 60º • the level of the water is not high; E 40º • the drum is not turning. 30º 30º 40º If these requirements are met, when you pause the washing machine, the DOOR light goes out and the door can be opened. 60º E 30º 40º 40º 30º Should it not be possible to open the door, and should it be absolutely necessary to do so, switch the machine off by pressing the ON/OFF button. The selector dial can be turned either clockwise or anticlockwise. Position E corresponds to the ENERGY SAVING programme and position to “cold wash”. After approximately 2 minutes, you can open the door. At the end of the programme the selector dial must be turned to position X (reset). Pay attention to the level and temperatures of the water in the washing machine! Functions When you close the door and press the ON/OFF button again, the washing machine will resume the programme from the point where it had been interrupted. End of programme Programme information When the door locked light has gone out, the door can be opened. The light (END) on the programme progress display illuminates. Switch the machine off and remove the laundry. Turn the programme selector dial to X. Wool Washing programme for machine washable wool as well as for hand washable woollens and delicate fabrics with the “hand washing” care symbol. Altering a programme = Soak You can alter the programme before it starts. When the programme has started, you can only reset it by turning the programme selector dial to X and then you can select the new programme. Start it by depressing the START/PAUSE button. Select this programme for heavily soiled laundry. Pour the detergent into the compartment . This programme is not suitable for wool. The machine performs a soak at 30°C and stops with the water in the drum. The water can be emptied out by depressing the START/PAUSE button. Interrupting a programme Depress the START/PAUSE button to interrupt a programme which is running: the corresponding light starts to flash. Depress the same button to restart the programme. Important! • If the water is not emptied out within 18 hours, the machine empties automatically. • At the end of the soak (after having emptied out the water) you can select the washing programme. Turn first the programme selector dial to X, then select the programme and depress the START/PAUSE button. 14 2-10-2001 8:34 Pagina 15 ENGLISH 132996651•EW1232I•GB.qxd = Rinses With this programme it is possible to rinse and spin garments which have been washed by hand. The machine performs 3 rinses, followed by a final spin at 1200 r.p.m. The spin speed can be reduced by depressing button . = Softeners Hand washed garments can be softened with this programme. The machine performs 1 rinse, followed by a final spin at the max. speed, which can be reduced by depressing button . = Drain For emptying out the water of the last rinse in programmes with the Anti-crease option. Turn first the programme selector dial to X, then select programme and depress the START/PAUSE button. = Spin Separate spin at the maximum speed for hand washed garments. You can reduce the speed by means of button to adapt it to the fabrics to be spun. = Short programme This is a complete programme that can be combined with the following options: spin speed reduction, no spin, anti-crease. To be used for laundry which is lightly soiled or which needs freshening up. Max load 2 kg. Washing temperature 30°C Programme duration 30 minutes Final spin speed 700 r.p.m. X = Cancelling To reset a programme turn the selector dial to X. Sort the laundry as follows: whites, coloureds, synthetics, delicates, woollens. Temperatures 95° 60° for normally soiled white cottons and linen (e.g. tea cloths, towels, tablecloths, sheets...) for normally soiled, colour fast garments (e.g. shirts, night dresses, pyjamas....) in linen, cotton or synthetic fibres and for lightly soiled white cotton (e.g. underwear). 1200 g 100 g quilt cover 700 g sheet 500 g pillow case 200 g tablecloth 250 g towelling towel 200 g tea cloth 100 g night dress 200 g ladies’ briefs 100 g man’s work shirt 600 g man’s shirt 200 g man’s pyjamas 500 g (cold)for delicate items (e.g. net curtains), mixed 30°-40° laundry including synthetic fibres and woollens. blouse 100 g men’s underpants 100 g Before loading the laundry Removing stains Never wash whites and coloureds together. Whites may lose their “whiteness” in the wash. Stubborn stains may not be removed by just water and detergent. It is therefore advisable to treat them prior to washing. New coloured items may run in the first wash; they should therefore be washed separately the first time. Blood: treat fresh stains with cold water. For dried stains, soak overnight in water with a special detergent then rub in the soap and water. Make sure that no metal objects are left in the laundry (e.g. hair clips, safety pins, pins). Oil based paint: moisten with benzine stain remover, lay the garment on a soft cloth and dab the stain; treat several times. Button up pillowcases, close zip fasteners, hooks and poppers. Tie any belts or long tapes. Remove persistent stains before washing. Rub particularly soiled areas with a special detergent or detergent paste. Dried grease stains: moisten with turpentine, lay the garment on a soft surface and dab the stain with the fingertips and a cotton cloth. Treat curtains with special care. Remove hooks or tie them up in a bag or net. Rust: oxalic acid dissolved in hot water or a rust removing product used cold. Be careful with rust stains which are not recent since the cellulose structure will already have been damaged and the fabric tends to hole. Maximum loads Recommended loads are indicated in the programme charts. Mould stains: treat with bleach, rinse well (whites and fast coloureds only). General rules: Grass: soap lightly and treat with bleach (whites and fast coloureds only). Cotton, linen: drum full but not too tightly packed; Synthetics: drum no more than half full; Ball point pen and glue: moisten with acetone (*), lay the garment on a soft cloth and dab the stain. Delicate fabrics and woollens: drum no more than one third full. Lipstick: moisten with acetone as above, then treat stains with methylated spirits. Remove any residual marks from white fabrics with bleach. Washing a maximum load makes the most efficient use of water and energy. For heavily soiled laundry, reduce the load size. Red wine: soak in water and detergent, rinse and treat with acetic or citric acid, then rinse. Treat any residual marks with bleach. 16 2-10-2001 8:34 Pagina 17 Quantity of detergent to be used Ink: depending on the type of ink, moisten the fabric first with acetone (*), then with acetic acid; treat any residual marks on white fabrics with bleach and then rinse thoroughly. The type and quantity of detergent will depend on the type of fabric, load size, degree of soiling and hardness of the water used. Tar stains: first treat with stain remover, methylated spirits or benzine, then rub with detergent paste. (*) do not use acetone on artificial silk. Water hardness is classified in so-called “degrees” of hardness. Information on hardness of the water in your area can be obtained from the relevant water supply company, or from your local authority. Detergents and additives Follow the product manufacturers’ instructions on quantities to use. Good washing results also depend on the choice of detergent and use of the correct quantities to avoid waste and protect the environment. Although biodegradable, detergents contain substances which, in large quantities, can upset the delicate balance of nature. Use less detergent if: – you are washing a small load, – the laundry is lightly soiled, – large amounts of foam form during washing. The choice of detergent will depend on the type of fabric (delicates, woollens, cottons, etc.), the colour, washing temperature and degree of soiling. Degrees of water hardness All commonly available washing machine detergents may be used in this appliance: Degrees Level – powder detergents for all types of fabric, Characteristic – powder detergents for delicate fabrics (60°C max) and woollens, – liquid detergents, preferably for low temperature wash programmes (60°C max) for all types of fabric, or special for woollens only. The detergent and any additives must be placed in the appropriate compartments of the dispenser drawer before starting the wash programme. If using concentrated powder or liquid detergents, a programme without prewash must be selected. The washing machine incorporates a recirculation system which allows an optimal use of the concentrated detergent. Pour liquid detergent into the dispenser drawer compartment marked just before starting the programme. Any fabric softener or starching additives must be poured into the compartment marked before starting the wash programme. Switch the machine on Operating sequence To switch the machine on, press the ON/OFF button : the mains-on light comes on. Before washing your first load of laundry, we recommend that you run a cotton cycle at 60°C, with the machine empty, in order to remove any manufacturing residue from the drum and tub. Pour half a measure of detergent into the main wash compartment and start up the machine. 1. Place the laundry in the drum Open the door. Place the laundry in the drum, one item at a time, shaking them out as much as possible. 5. Select the desired programme Close the door. Turn the programme selector dial to the desired position: the lights corresponding to the different phases making up the selected programme light on. Measure out the amount of detergent recommended by the manufacturer in a graduated cup and pour it into the main wash compartment . 6. At the end of the programme The light corresponding to the depressed button illuminates. The machine stops automatically. If the anti-crease option has been selected, the light of the START/PAUSE button flashes to indicate that the water must be emptied out before opening the door. Release of the lock is indicated by the coming on of the light and by going out of door light . Turn the programme selector dial to Reset X. Switch the machine off by pressing the ON/OFF button . Remove the laundry from the drum and carefully check that the drum is empty so as to avoid any forgotten items being damaged in a subsequent wash (e.g. shrinking) or their colour running into a load of whites. 8. Start the programme To start the selected programme, press the START/PAUSE button; the corresponding light stops flashing. If you do not intend to carry out another wash, close the water tap. The pilot light corresponding to the wash phase which is running is on. Leave the door open to prevent the formation of mildew and unpleasant smells. Bodywork 3. Drain filter Clean the outside of the machine with warm water and a neutral, non-abrasive household detergent. Rinse with clean water and dry with a soft cloth. The drain filter collects threads and small objects inadvertently left in the laundry. Check regularly that the filter is clean. Important: do not use methylated spirits, solvents or similar products to clean the bodywork. Place a container under the filter and unscrew it. 2. Detergent dispenser drawer After a while, detergents and fabric softeners leave deposits in the drawer. Clean the drawer from time to time by rinsing it under a running tap. To remove the drawer from the machine, press the button in the rear left-hand corner. P0037 Pull out the filter. To facilitate cleaning, the top part of the additive compartments can be removed. P0009 Clean the filter under a running tap, then refit it, screwing it fully in. P0010 P0039 Detergent can also accumulate inside the drawer recess: clean it with an old toothbrush. Refit the drawer after cleaning. P0040 4. Water inlet filter If you notice that the machine is taking longer to fill, check that the filter in the water inlet hose is not blocked. Turn off the water tap. Unscrew the hose from the tap. Clean the filter with a stiff brush. Screw the hose back onto the tap. Emergency emptying out If the water is not discharged (outlet pump is blocked, filter or drain hose are clogged), proceed as follows to empty out the machine: • pull out the plug from the power socket; • close the water tap; • if necessary, wait until the water has cooled down; • place a bowl on the floor; • put the drain hose end into the bowl and let the water come out. Should it not be possible to have access to the outlet hose because, for example, the appliance is built in the kitchen furniture, slightly loosen the outlet filter after placing a bowl on the floor, to let the water come out slowly. At the end screw the filter again. 6. Frost precautions If the machine is installed in a place where the temperature could drop below 0°C, proceed as follows: • Close the water tap and unscrew the water inlet hose from the tap. • Place the end of the drain hose and that of the inlet hose in a bowl placed on the floor. • Select programme machine stops. It is not always easy to see this as the water runs down the hose; check to see if it is damp. • The drain hose is damaged. • Unsatisfactory washing results: • Too little detergent or unsuitable detergent has been used. • Stubborn stains have not been treated prior to washing. • The correct temperature was not selected. • Excessive laundry load. • The machine vibrates or is noisy: • The transit bolts and packing have not been removed. • The support feet have not been adjusted. • The laundry is not evenly distributed in the drum. • Maybe there is very little laundry in the drum. • The door will not open: • • • • 25 The water tap is closed. ENGLISH Something not working? 132996651•EW1232I•GB.qxd 2-10-2001 8:34 Pagina 26 Problem Possible cause • Spinning starts late or the laundry is not spun enough: • The electronic unbalance detection device has cut in because the laundry is not evenly distributed in the drum. The laundry is redistributed by reverse rotation of the drum. This may happen several times before the unbalance disappears and normal spinning can resume. If, after 6 minutes, the laundry is still not evenly distributed in the drum, the machine will spin at a lower speed. If at the end of the programme the laundry is not spun enough, redistribute the load manually and select the spin programme. Water is not visible in the machine. The machine, which is the result of modern technology, runs in a very economical way with low water consumption. Performance is nevertheless excellent. The machine makes an unusual noise.
