This manual provides a complete description of the system and
system software. The purpose of this manual is to provide the
technician, system administrator, and manager with general and
specific information related to the planning, installation, operation,
and maintenance of Total Access 1500. The manual is arranged so
that needed information can be quickly and easily found. The
following is an overview of the contents:
System Description
Provides users with an overview of the Total Access 1500 system.
Engineering Guidelines
Provides information to assist network designers incorporating a Total
Access 1500 system into their networks.
Application Guidelines
Provides information on specific Total Access 1500 wiring and
applications.
Certification
Total Access 1500 is compliant with all NEBS Level 3 requirements
and is listed to UL1950 3rd edition.

1.1
System Overview
1.1.1
General Overview
The Total AccessTM 1500 (TA 1500) is a Carrier Class, Multi-service Access Platform
for deploying narrowband and xDSL services from TDM or ATM backbone
infrastructures. A small, extremely versatile platform, TA 1500 integrates the
functionality of many carrier products into a single high-density chassis. TA 1500’s
small footprint (2U-high mounting) makes it the perfect choice for integrated
communications providers such as ILECs, CLECs, and ISPs, who need to deploy
services from crowded Remote Terminals (RTs), Central Offices (COs), or CoLocation (COLO) facilities.
TA 1500 provides a variety of services including POTS, special services (ISDN, DDS,
FXO, FXS, E&M, DPO, DPT, and PLAR), and xDSL. TA 1500 complements
ADTRAN’s Total Access 3000 broadband multi-service access platform, which can
terminate and distribute higher bandwidth services such as SONET, DS3, HDSL,
HDSL2, T1, Optical DS2, and xDSL. TA 1500 can be deployed as a:
•
Small Digital Loop Carrier (DLC), for simple and effective deployment of
POTS (up to 96 lines in a 2U mounting).
• Special Services delivery platform, with up to five times the density of any
competing D4 platform.
• Mini-DSLAM, serving up to 24 xDSL customers (POTS and data) using an
ATM network interface.
TA 1500 is a modular device, with five common slots and 24 access slots. Common
units required for operation are a Power Supply Unit (PSU), Line Interface Unit (LIU),
and System Controller Unit (SCU). A second, redundant PSU and LIU may be
deployed for added reliability. The PSU is available with an integrated Ring
Generator providing up to 20 REN ringing capacity. The LIU can support up to four
T1 interfaces and has full Time Slot Assignment (TSA) capability. This feature allows
users to “steer” varied amounts of bandwidth from the network to any of the access
slots, ensuring that no bandwidth is stranded. Future LIUs will provide HDSL2, fiber,
and ATM interfaces. The 24 access slots accept a variety of voice and data access
modules, allowing users to optimize their service for each application.
Using local or remote inband management, service providers can provision and
monitor the bank’s network interface and access modules. Transaction Language 1
(TL1) is used to communicate with Telcordia’s NMATM Operations System
(OSS) using an internal X.25 PAD. An Ethernet 10BASE-T connector is used
for connection to SNMP networks. ADTRAN’s Total Access EMSTM
software, run on an Openview workstation, provides a graphical user interface
(GUI).

TA 1500 Shelf
The system houses the management, network interface, and access modules. The
compact shelf includes all the features necessary for total system functioning including
provisioning, protection, monitoring, alarm status, and testing. The single
multifunction backplane provides for a variety of system arrangements.
ADTRAN’s Total Access 1500 shelf is compliant with all applicable NEBS Level 3
requirements and listed to UL 1950 3rd edition.
All modules are inserted and removed from the front of the shelf. The two far left
slots are designated for the Power Supply Units (PSU). The next slot is designated for
the System Controller Unit (SCU). The next two slots are designated for the Line
Interface Units (LIU). The remaining 24 slots are reserved for access modules. Slot
openings are labeled for easy identification (see Figure 1.)
The 3.5-inch high, 12-inch deep, 23-inch wide shelf is constructed of heavy gauge
metal with vent perforations on the top and bottom planes. Reversible mounting
brackets allow for flush mount or 5-inch overhang configurations. Mounting brackets
meet both 1-inch and 1 3/4-inch mounting hole pattern.

Total Access 1500 is the foundation for an intelligent, versatile voice and digital
services system. It is the basic building block for both metallic and optical
transmission service between the customer and the service provider’s facility. Figure 2
shows the Total Access 1500 with management, network, loop devices, and interfaces.

Heat Baffle
An optional heat baffle mounts directly above the main shelf. It allows passage of hot
air to convect heat away from the shelf above the baffle.

1.3
System Connectivity
The TA 1500 fits in the standard 23-inch rack. The multifunction single backplane is
the key element in system versatility. It contains all I/O connectors, control and signal
routing, power input and ground, plus the interconnections between access modules
and the common cards. There are also facilities for plug-in modules and wire-wrap
pins for special purposes.
Refer to Figure 3, Total Access 1500 Backplane, to identify the locations of the
following:
1.3.1
System and Power Ground
1. Power Connections (TB1)
The system is designed to accommodate redundant power configurations.
Dual Terminals for -48V, return, and frame ground are provided. The system
will operate with each individual supply or both supplies functioning.
2. Ring Generator (TB2)
The system operates with either an internal or external ring generator. For external
ring generator applications, TB2 provides connections for ringing voltage, ringing
return, and frame ground.
1.3.2
Timing
1. Composite Clock (P14)
For applications requiring external timing sources, a composite clock interface is
available. SW1 allows the user to designate which bank is terminating composite
clock.
1.3.3
Network Interfaces
1. T1 Connections (P7, P8, P9, P10, P11)
Four T1s plus a protect T1 are available. A frame ground connection is provided
for each T1.
1.3.4
Loop Interface
1. Loop Access (P1, P2, P3, P4)
Loop side access is achieved via 50-pin amphenol connectors.
2. PGTC Connector (P5)
The Pair Gain Test Controller (PGTC) connector provides a 28-wire interface to
the Central Office PGTC. The Central Office PGTC permits customer loops
served by loop carrier systems to be tested from a maintenance center using
Mechanized Loop Testing (MLT).

System Controller Unit
The System Controller Unit (SCU) serves as the user interface into the system. (See

Line Interface Unit
The LIU is a common card plug-in for the ADTRAN TA 1500 channel bank. (See
Figure 5.) It connects the channel bank to a T1 line at the DSX-1 or DS1 level. All
data formatting and line encoding as well as backplane timing and control are
performed by the TA 1500 LIU.
The LIU incorporates these features:
• Four T1s + protect
• SF, ESF, or SLC-96 (TR-08) framing formats
• AMI or B8ZS line code formats
• Local and remote loopbacks
• Front panel Bantam jacks for monitoring T1s
• Front panel indicators showing the status of the unit

PSU/RGU
The PSU/RGU is a common module plug-in unit designed for use in the ADTRAN TA
1500 channel bank. (See Figure 6.) The PSU/RGU receives -48 Vdc from an external
source to provide all necessary voltages required by the other common modules and
access channel units. Through switchmode operation the PSU converts the incoming 48 Vdc to regulated +5 Vdc, +3.3 Vdc and unregulated -7.5 Vdc, -26 Vdc, and 48 Vdc for distribution to other modules. Two versions of the PSU/RGU are
available. The 1180007L2 allows the system to operate utilizing an external ring
generator. The 1180007L1 contains circuitry within the PSU that generates 105 Vrms
nominal, 20 Hz ring voltage for distribution to the channel bank’s voice cards.
Removing the 20 Hz, 5-amp GMT faceplate fuse disables ring voltage. Two PSU/
RGUs may be installed to provide fully redundant operation.
The PSU incorporates these features:
• Receives unregulated power input.
• Generates 20 Hz ring voltage (List 1 only).
• Faceplate mounted input power fuse
• Faceplate mounted ring voltage disconnect
• Faceplate status LEDs
• Provision free plug-and-play
The faceplate also includes LEDs for local module status.

2.2
System Power Requirements
In the Total Access 1500, power is supplied to the commons and access cards from the
PSU/RGU. The PSU/RGU converts -48V battery voltage to the various other voltages
required by the commons and access cards. Additionally, unfiltered -48V is also
routed to all commons and access cards in the chassis. Table 2 lists the current draw
of each module at -48V, taking into consideration the inefficiency of the PSU/RGU
and the amount of on-board current needed from the -48V unfiltered line. Power
dissipated outside the channel bank, such as loop power, is not included. Use Table 2
as a worksheet to calculate the total current draw for a single shelf deployment.

Alarm Interfaces
2.4.1
Alarm Inputs and Outputs
For alarms, the physical wiring will depend on which type of alarm equipment is used.
ADTRAN recommends referring to the Alarm Equipment manufacturer’s instructions
for alarm wiring.
Inputs
Four alarm inputs are supported and are accessible at backplane wirewrap header P14.
They are ACO, Remote, AUX1, and AUX2. The active alarm state is -48 V or contact
closure. Figure 1 lists the backplane pin assignments for the alarm inputs.

Outputs
The shelf currently supports six alarm outputs accessible at backplane wirewrap header
P13. Alarming is dependent on how the TA 1500 system is configured. When the TA
1500 is configured as a channel bank using a single or dual T1 feed, the alarm outputs
should be represented by VMJ (Visual Major), VMN(Visual Minor), AudMJ (Audible
Major), AudMN (Audible Minor), AUX (Auxiliary) and -48. However, if the TA
1500 bank is configured as a DLC using quad T1 feed, the alarm outputs should be
represented by AMJ (A Digroup Major), BMJ(B Digroup Major), CMJ (C Digroup
Major), DMJ (D Digroup Major), BANKMJ(Bank Digroup Major), and -48. In the
DLC mode, the TA 1500 separately monitors the performance of each digroup (A, B,
C and D) and the bank. The DLC mode assures that an alarm at the digroup level
provides appropriate central office and remote information. With the exception of
-48ALM, each alarm supports normally open or normally closed relay contacts. The 48ALM is an indication that the -48 V input fuse on the PSU/RGU has been tripped
and is at a -48 V level when asserted. Refer to Figure 2 for alarm output connector
pin assignments.

Office timing inputs are provided by backplane wirewrap connector P14, labeled CLK
IN +,-. Connector P14 also provides daisy-chaining of up to 14 additional TA1500
dual-LIU systems or 28 single-LIU systems from the same composite clock using the
terminals labeled CLK OUT +, -. Figure 3 illustrates the composite clock wiring
scheme for multiple shelves.

Because some applications may require the shelf to provide source timing, an
additional connection is provided at P14 labeled LOCCK +,- to provide a 64 kHz
composite clock output. This output clock can be used as a timing source for up to 14LIU systems or 28-LIU systems. Figure 4 illustrates the external clock wiring
scheme.

Clock Termination
Clock termination switch SW1 should be set to the IN position on a single shelf
installation. In a daisy-chain arrangement, SW1 should be set to the OUT position on
all shelves, except the first in the chain where SW1 should be set to the IN position.
2.6
Network Connections
Total Access 1500 supports either DS1 or DSX-1 network connections. The copper
pair network interface connects to the backplane at wirewrap connector P11. Refer to
Total Access 1500 Turn-Up Guide 61180001L1 TU-22 for connector pin assignments.
2.7
Local Loop Connections
Local loop connections in the form of copper pairs are delivered through four 50-pin
AMP Champ connectors on the backplane. Each of the 24 channel unit slots in the
chassis has access to four copper pairs. Pair 1 (T/R) is assigned to connector P1, Pair 2
(T1/R1) to P2, Pair 3 (E/SG) to P3, and Pair 4 (M/SB) to P4. See Figure 5 for the
layout of backplane AMP Champ connectors. Figure 6 illustrates the pin assignment
of connectors P1-P4.

3.1
Overview
The Total Access 1500 (TA 1500) channel bank can be used as a replacement for
existing D4 channel banks to recover valuable floor space, or as an alternative to
standard D4 channel banks for new installations. In addition to D4 channel banks, the
TA 1500 can operate in accordance with TR-08 for SLC-96 alternatives.
The Total Access 1500 is an Integrated Multi-service Access Platform for deploying
narrow band services from TDM infrastructures. A small, extremely versatile
platform, TA 1500 integrates the functionality of many carrier products into a single
high-density chassis. TA 1500’s small footprint (2U high mounting) makes it the
perfect choice for integrated communications providers, such as ILECs, CLECs, and
ISPs, who need to deploy services from crowded Remote Terminals (RT), Central
Offices (C.O.), or Co-Location (COLO) facilities.
The TA 1500 provides a variety of services, including Plain Old Telephone Service
(POTS), Special Services including ISDN, DDS, FXO, FXS, E&M, DPO, DPT, and
PLAR. The TA 1500 complements ADTRAN’s broadband Multi-service Access
Platform, TA 3000, which can terminate and distribute higher bandwidth services such
as SONET, DS3, HDSL, T1, and Optical DS2. The TA 1500 can be deployed as a:

deploying POTS (up to 96 lines in 2U mounting)
Special services delivery platform, with up to three times the density of any
competing D4 platform
Hi-Density Integrated Access Device, serving up to 96 voice and data

The TA 1500 is a modular device, with five common slots and 24 access slots.
Common units required for operation are a Power Supply Unit (PSU), Line Interface
Unit (LIU), and System Controller Unit (SCU). A second, redundant PSU and LIU
may be deployed for added reliability. The PSU is available with an integrated Ring
Generator providing up to 20 REN ringing capacity. The LIU can support up to four
T1 interfaces and has the full Time Slot Assignment (TSA) capability. This feature
allows users to “steer” varied amounts of bandwidth from the network to any of the
access slots, ensuring no bandwidth is stranded. Additional LIUs will provide HDSL2
and Fiber interfaces. The 24 access slots accept a variety of voice and data access
modules allowing users to optimize their service offering for each application.
The TA 1500 is designed for 23-inch relay racks. Full compliance with NEBS Level 3
and UL 1950 ensure maximum reliability and safety.

D4 Replacement Application
3.2.1
Special Services Deployment (TDM Channel Bank Applications)
If special services are the main concern, the TA 1500 can be deployed in the Central
Office or Remote Terminal to provide the same functionality as a legacy D4 channel
bank. In the central office environment, the small size of the unit provides almost
three times the density of a standard D4 in rack configurations.
When replacing existing D4 channel banks, the TA 1500 operates in a single T1
mode. In the single T1 mode, the system maintains standard D4 cabling
guidelines to facilitate the replacement process. The TA 1500 is designed for
extended temperature environments so it can be installed in both COs and RTs.

SLC-96 Replacement Applications
3.3.1
TA 1500 Solves Today’s DLC Problems
Remote Terminals, which house Digital Loop Carriers (DLC), are fast becoming
exhausted of their capacity as customers continue to order additional phone lines for
the Internet, etc. In addition, many special services, such as ISDN and DDS, must be
deployed out of DLCs, further decreasing POTS capacity, while wasting valuable
copper pairs connected to the cross box. Couple this with the imminent mass
deployment of xDSL services out of RT cabinets, and the Service Providers have a
serious challenge on their hands. Do they pour more concrete and install yet another
costly DLC cabinet, try to retrofit the cabinet for new services, or try to get more life
out of the system by better allocating RT resources?
The TA 1500 Multi-services Platform solves this problem. Since the shelf is only 3.5
inches high it can mount in almost any existing RT cabinet. The bank can be placed
inside the RT to augment current services (POTS) and special services. The LIU used
for POTS & Specials (LIU 4T1+P) terminates five individual T1s – four working T1s
and one T1 for protection (same as SLC-96).
If only additional POTS lines are needed at the RT, the TA 1500 is directly connected
to the switch using TR-008 or using another TA 1500 as a Central Office Terminal
(COT). A COT must be used if special services are deployed. This application
requires the LIU 4T1+P and is for TDM backbone infrastructures.
For SLC-96 replacement, the TA 1500 terminates five T1 signals. Both Mode I and
Mode III are supported. Refer to Figure 4.
