INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION
PROTIG 315 is a programmable TIG welding equipment with the possibility of programming the welding process, storing welding programs and transmitting welding
programs between similar types of welding equipment.
It is designed to be used in combination with the tube welding tools PRB/PRC/PRD/
PRE/PRG/PRI and the MTC20/MEI20 wire feed units or the tube--to--plate welding
tools POA/PIA/POB and the A25 component system. It can also be used together
with a TIG hand torch and complies with the requirements of the IEC 974--1 and EN
60 974--1 standards.
WARNING
ARC WELDING AND CUTTING CAN BE INJURIOUS TO YOURSELF AND OTHERS. TAKE PRECAUTIONS WHEN WELDING. ASK FOR YOUR EMPLOYER’S SAFETY PRACTICES WHICH SHOULD BE

Install and earth the welding unit in accordance with applicable standards.

Do not touch live electrical parts or electrodes with bare skin, wet gloves or wet clothing.

Insulate yourself from earth and the workpiece.

Ensure your working stance is safe.
FUMES AND GASES -- Can be dangerous to health

Keep your head out of the fumes.

Use ventilation, extraction at the arc, or both, to keep fumes and gases from your breathing zone and
the general area.
ARC RAYS -- Can injure eyes and burn skin.

Protect your eyes and body. Use the correct welding screen and filter lens and wear protective
clothing.

Protect bystanders with suitable screens or curtains.
FIRE HAZARD
S
Sparks (spatter) can cause fire. Make sure therefore that there are no inflammable materials nearby.
NOISE -- Excessive noise can damage hearing

Protect your ears. Use ear defenders or other hearing protection.

Warn bystanders of the risk.
MALFUNCTION -- Call for expert assistance in the event of malfunction.

When welding with a welding tool without water--cooling, use the water bridge connector (order no. 442 811--880) that came with the delivery, so as to make the water
circulate.

WARNING!
Rotating parts can cause injury, take
great care.
The standard version of PROTIG 315 is connected for 400 V on delivery.
The rating plate with production number and connection data is located on the rear
panel of the welding equipment.
1. Set up the PROTIG 315 so that:
S
There is nothing to prevent the cooling air from circulating through the ventilating openings freely.
S
Dust and metal particles cannot gather.
S
Moist air or corroding vapour cannot be sucked in.
2. Make sure there is coolant in the tank of the cooling unit.
Coolant: 50% water and 50% glycol
3. Mount the chassis, if any, according to figure on page 111.
4. Make sure the equipment is connected for the right voltage and properly fused.
5. Recommended fuse sizes and cable cross sections comply with the Swedish regulations. In case other countries have their own regulations, these are to be followed.

6. The mains cable fitted in the equipment is dimensioned for a mains voltage of
400 V or higher.
If the equipment is connected for 230 V, or in case a longer connection cable is
required, a thicker cable should be mounted.
7. Connect the PROTIG 315 to the mains ( 3--phase). Connect to earth according
to valid regulations. The earth cable is to be connected to the earth--marked bolt
on the plate in front of the mains connection terminal K 11.

8. Connect the welding cable and the return cable to the terminals marked -- resp
+, see figure on page 42.
S
Check that the cables are properly tightened.
S
To decrease the voltage drop when an extra--long welding cable is used, it
can be necessary to choose a cable with a greater cross--section.
9. Connect the shielding gas supply to the respective hose connection.
10. Connect the tube welding tool PRB/PRC/PRE/PRG/PRI to the 7--pole terminal A
47 ”PRB” on the rear panel of the welding equipment, see figure on page 43.
11. Connect the wire feed unit MTC 20/MEI 20, the tube welding tool PRC/PRD/
PRE/PRI or the tube--to--plate welding tool POA/PIA/POB to the 24--pole terminal
A 48 ”PIA, POA, MTC 20, MEI 20” on the rear panel of the welding equipment,
see figure on page 43.
12. Connect the programming unit to the A 35 terminal ”PROGRAMMING UNIT” on
the front panel of the welding equipment, see figure on page 43.

OPERATION
OPERATION
1. See under “OPERATION“ in the instruction manual for the respective welding
tool.
2. Set welding data and program the equipment according to the programming
manual for PROTIG 315, order no. 443 425--xxx.
Welding
S
Make sure that the welding and return cables and the welding tool are properly
connected.
S
Make sure that the electrode fitted in the tool is correctly ground.
S
Set the correct gas flow, 5 -- 10 l/min (e.g. argon 99.95).
S
Set the mains power switch to position 1.
S
Set the cooling unit power switch to position 1.
S
Make sure that the cooling air can pass freely through the machine.
S
Set all welding parameters according to instructions in the programming manual.
MAINTENANCE
IMPORTANT! All kinds of service should normally be carried out by an AUTHORIZED ESAB SERVICE TECHNICIAN.
1. Cleaning of dust.
S
To be done as necessary, using reduced air pressure.
2. Replacement of battery on the A 03 CPU--board.
The length of life of the battery is 2500 hours.
S
Dismount the left--hand side panel of the welding equipment.
S
Look for the A 03 CPU--board (number two from the left in the board rack).
S
Remove the board from the rack.
S
Place the board, soldering side up, on an insulating mat.
S
Remove the insulating tube from the unsoldered battery pole.
S
Solder the battery pole and the terminal clip together.
S
Place the board in the rack.
NOTE! It is very important that the contacts are turned right and fitted in their
original places when connected.
S
Check that no boards are damaged and that they are properly inserted in the
board rack.
S
Remount the side panel.
