Stresses beyond those listed under Absolute Maximum Ratings may cause permanent damage to the device. These are stress ratings
only, and functional operation of the device at these or any other conditions beyond those indicated under Recommended Operating
Conditions is not implied. Exposure to absolute-maximum-rated conditions for extended periods may affect device reliability.
The input and output voltage ratings may be exceeded if the input and output current ratings are observed.

9 Detailed Description
9.1 Overview
The SNx4AHC16244 devices are 16-bit buffers and line drivers designed specifically to improve the performance
and density of 3-state memory address drivers, clock drivers, and bus-oriented receivers and transmitters
These devices can be used as four 4-bit buffers, two 8-bit buffers, or one 16-bit buffer. They provide true outputs
and symmetrical active-low output-enable (OE) inputs.
To ensure the high-impedance state during power up or power down, OE should be tied to VCC through a pull-up
resistor; the minimum value of the resistor is determined by the current-sinking capability of the driver. The
SN54AHC16244 is characterized for operation over the full military temperature range of –55°C to 125°C. The
SN74AHC16244 is characterized for operation from –40°C to 85°C.

10 Application and Implementation
NOTE
Information in the following applications sections is not part of the TI component
specification, and TI does not warrant its accuracy or completeness. TI’s customers are
responsible for determining suitability of components for their purposes. Customers should
validate and test their design implementation to confirm system functionality.
10.1 Application Information
The SN74AHC16244 is a low-drive CMOS device that can be used for a multitude of applications where output
ringing is a concern. The low drive and slow edge rates will minimize overshoot and undershoot on the outputs.
The inputs are tolerant to 5.5 V at any valid VCC. This feature makes it ideal for translating down to the VCC level.
Figure 6 shows the reduction in ringing compared to higher-drive parts, such as AC.

10.2.1 Design Requirements
This device uses CMOS technology and has balanced output drive. Care should be taken to avoid bus
contention because it can drive currents that would exceed maximum limits. The high drive will also create fast
edges into light loads, so routing and load conditions should be considered to prevent ringing.
10.2.2 Detailed Design Procedure
1. Recommended input conditions:
– For rise time and fall time specifications, see (Δt/ΔV) in the Recommended Operating Conditions table.
– For specified high and low levels, see (VIH and VIL) in the Recommended Operating Conditions table.
– Inputs are overvoltage tolerant allowing them to go as high as 5.5 V at any valid VCC.
2. Recommend output conditions:
– Load currents should not exceed 25 mA per output and 75 mA total for the part.
– Outputs should not be pulled above VCC.

11 Power Supply Recommendations
The power supply can be any voltage between the Min and Max supply voltage rating located in the
Recommended Operating Conditions.
Each VCC terminal should have a good bypass capacitor to prevent power disturbance. For devices with a single
supply, a 0.1 μF capacitor is recommended. If there are multiple VCC terminals then 0.01 μF or 0.022 μF
capacitors are recommended for each power terminal. It is acceptable to parallel multiple bypass capacitors to
reject different frequencies of noise. 0.1 μF and 1.0 μF capacitors are commonly used in parallel. The bypass
capacitor should be installed as close to the power terminal as possible for the best results.
12 Layout
12.1 Layout Guidelines
When using multiple bit logic devices, inputs should not float. In many cases, functions or parts of functions of
digital logic devices are unused. Some examples are when only two inputs of a triple-input AND gate are used,
or only 3 of the 4-buffer gates are used. Such input pins should not be left unconnected because the undefined
voltages at the outside connections result in undefined operational states. Specified in Figure 8 are rules that
must be observed under all circumstances. All unused inputs of digital logic devices must be connected to a high
or low bias to prevent them from floating. The logic level that should be applied to any particular unused input
depends on the function of the device. Generally they will be tied to GND or VCC, whichever makes more sense
or is more convenient. It is generally acceptable to float outputs unless the part is a transceiver.

PROPERTY RIGHTS. TI SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR AND SHALL NOT DEFEND OR INDEMNIFY DESIGNER AGAINST ANY CLAIM,
INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO ANY INFRINGEMENT CLAIM THAT RELATES TO OR IS BASED ON ANY COMBINATION OF
PRODUCTS EVEN IF DESCRIBED IN TI RESOURCES OR OTHERWISE. IN NO EVENT SHALL TI BE LIABLE FOR ANY ACTUAL,
DIRECT, SPECIAL, COLLATERAL, INDIRECT, PUNITIVE, INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL OR EXEMPLARY DAMAGES IN
CONNECTION WITH OR ARISING OUT OF TI RESOURCES OR USE THEREOF, AND REGARDLESS OF WHETHER TI HAS BEEN
ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.
Unless TI has explicitly designated an individual product as meeting the requirements of a particular industry standard (e.g., ISO/TS 16949
and ISO 26262), TI is not responsible for any failure to meet such industry standard requirements.
Where TI specifically promotes products as facilitating functional safety or as compliant with industry functional safety standards, such
products are intended to help enable customers to design and create their own applications that meet applicable functional safety standards
and requirements. Using products in an application does not by itself establish any safety features in the application. Designers must
ensure compliance with safety-related requirements and standards applicable to their applications. Designer may not use any TI products in
life-critical medical equipment unless authorized officers of the parties have executed a special contract specifically governing such use.
Life-critical medical equipment is medical equipment where failure of such equipment would cause serious bodily injury or death (e.g., life
support, pacemakers, defibrillators, heart pumps, neurostimulators, and implantables). Such equipment includes, without limitation, all
medical devices identified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as Class III devices and equivalent classifications outside the U.S.
TI may expressly designate certain products as completing a particular qualification (e.g., Q100, Military Grade, or Enhanced Product).
Designers agree that it has the necessary expertise to select the product with the appropriate qualification designation for their applications
and that proper product selection is at Designers’ own risk. Designers are solely responsible for compliance with all legal and regulatory
requirements in connection with such selection.
Designer will fully indemnify TI and its representatives against any damages, costs, losses, and/or liabilities arising out of Designer’s noncompliance with the terms and provisions of this Notice.
