Thermal management is key aspect of any
programmable logic controller (PLC) and its
subsystems, such as communication modules, DIN rail
power supplies to prevent damage from overheating.
Temperature sensors are also necessary within a PLC’s
analog input modules to provide an accurate cold
junction compensation reference for
thermocouple inputs.
TI’s portfolio makes thermal management simple. From
hardware programmable temperature switches for
basic over temperature detection to highly accurate
and linear sensors for cold junction compensation
(CJC), TI can meet any measurement needed.
The TMP116 offers a single chip, low power alternative
to RTDs with an accuracy exceeding Class A RTD
standards. The TMP116 provides a digital I2C output
with the temperature, eliminating the complexities of
an RTD circuit. The TMP116 is available in a compact
2.0 x 2.0 mm package and can be positioned on the
isothermal block for CJC systems.

For systems with an available ADC on a
microcontroller, the TMP235 analog output
temperature sensor provides cost-effective, low power,
and accurate temperature sensing solution.
To make over-temperature detection easy, the LM57
provides a resistor-programmable temperature
alert providing greater safety over software based
protection. The LM57 also provides an analog output
should the actual temperature need to be measured.
