Basic Operation
OperationButtons
ThrottleUp ThrottleupthepowertoyourtrackbypressingthetopendoftheThrottle
ControlRockerSwitchfirmlyforabout5seconds,untiltheengine'sheadlightand
lightedcarsburnbright. Thenputtheengineintomotionbyfirmlypressingthe
Directionbutton(holditforapproximately1second)onyourremoteonce. Iftheengine
doesnotbegintomoveassoonasyoufirmlypresstheDirectionbutton,youmaynot
havesentenoughvoltagetothetracktomakethetrainmove. Pressthethrottleupfora
fewmoresecondsuntilthetrainbeginstomove. Toincreaseordecreasetrackvoltage,
andthereforetrainspeed,pressthethrottlecontrolrockerswitch. Pressingthetopendof
thethrottlewillincreasevoltageandspeed. Pressingthebottomendofthethrottlewill
decreasevoltageandspeed. Theenginewillmaintainthespeedyousetafteryourelease
thethrottleuntilyoupressitagaintochangethevoltageandspeed.

Passengerstationannouncements(PSA):
Yourengineisequippedwithasoundpackageofpassengerstationannouncementsthat
youcanplaywhenyoupullintoastation. Eachsequencedescribedbelowwillplayas
longasitislefton,randomlygeneratingsounds,butbesuretoallowapproximately
30secondsbetweenthebuttonpushesdescribedbelowtoallowthePSAsufficient
timetorunthrougheachsequence.
!
TocuethesoundsystemtoplaythePSA,quicklybutfirmlytaptheBellbuttononce
followedby2quicktapsoftheHornbuttonwhiletheengineismoving. Tapthe
buttonsquicklybutallowapproximately½secondbetweeneachpress.
!
PresstheDirectionbuttononcetostoptheengine. Thiswilltriggerthefirst
sequenceofPSA.Thereverseunitistemporarilydisabledsothatthetrainwillnot
moveasyouusetheDirectionbuttontotriggerthesounds,andProto-Sound2.0has
disabledoperatorcontrolovertheHornandBellbuttonsuntilthefullPSAsequence
iscomplete.

Afterwaitingabout30secondsforthatsequencetorun,presstheDirectionbutton
againtotriggerthesecondsequenceofPSA.
!
Afterabout30seconds,presstheDirectionbuttonagaintotriggerthethirdPSA
sequence.
!
Again,afterallowingabout30secondsforthatsequencetorun,presstheDirection

beganthesequence. Oncethebellturnsoff,theoperatorregainscontrolofthe
transformer'sbellandHornbuttonsandcanringthebellorblowtheHornasusual.

toleavethethrottleatahighvoltagelevelonceyouhavestoppedtheengineto
runthePSA. Otherwise,theenginewithoutPSAwillbeginvibratingonthe
trackasitsmotorsstraintomovethetrain,sincetheycannotbeautomatically
disabledduringthePSAcycle(orifanoriginalProto-Soundengine,PSAare
triggereddifferentlyandthatengine'smotor-disablefea turewillnotbeactive
whenyourunPSAinProto-Sound2.0).
! PSAcanbetriggeredfromNeutral. Itwilloperatethesameasiftriggered
whileinmotionexceptthat,attheconclusionofthePSA,theenginewill
departinthenextdirectionoftravel,asopposedtothedirectionitwas
travelingbeforeenteringNeutral.

Proto-Coupler Operation
Thislocomotiveisequippedwithoneormorecoil-woundProto-Couplersforremote
uncouplingaction. BecauseProto-CouplersarecontrolledthroughtheProto-Sound2.0
microprocessor,theydonotrequireanuncouplingtracksectionormodificationtoyour
layouttofunction.Youcanfireacouplerfromneutralorwhileinmotion. Usethecode
shownbelow(andinthechartonp.7)tofirethecoupler(s).
RearCoupler:
Tofiretherearcoupler,quicklytaptheBellbuttononcefollowedbythreequicktapsof
theHornbutton,allowingapproximately½secondtolapsebetweeneachquickbutton
press. Thesoundoftheliftbarandairlinedepletionwillplay,andtheknucklewillbe
released.

SpeedControl:
M.T.H.enginesequippedwithProto-Sound2.0havespeedcontrolcapabilitiesthatallow
theenginetomaintainaconstantspeedupanddowngradesandaroundcurves,muchlike
anautomobilecruisecontrol. Youcanaddordropcarsontherun,andtheenginewill
maintainthespeedyouset.
Whiletheengi neisprogrammedtostartwiththespeedcontrolfeatureactivated,youcan
opttoturnitoff. Thismeanstheengine'sspeedwillfallasitlaborsupahillandincrease
asittravelsdownward. Itisalsoaffectedbytheadditionorreleasingofcarswhileonthe
run.Becausetheenginewillrunmoreslowlyatagiventhrottlevoltagewhenspeed
controlisonthanwhenitisoff,youshouldadjustthethrottletoalowerpowerlevelfor
operationwithspeedcontrolofftoavoidhigh-speedderailments. Whenspeedcontrolis
off,thevolumewilldroptoallowforbetterlowvoltageoperation.
Toturnspeedcontrolonandoff, puttheengineinneutral,thenquicklytapthe
transformer'sHornbuttononetimethenquicklytaptheBellbuttontwotimes,allowing
approximately½secondtolapsebetweeneachquickbuttonpress. Twohornblastswill
indicatethattheenginehasmadethechange. Repeatthe1horn,2bellscodetoreturnit
totheothercondition. Youwillwanttodothisduringtheinitialneutraluponstart-upif
youevercouplethisenginetoanotherenginethatisnotequippedwithspeedcontrolto
avoiddamagingthemotorsineitherengine. Eachtimeyoushutdowntheengine
completely,itwillautomaticallyturnspeedcontrolon.

YourRailKingRemoteControlSystemshouldofferyearsoftrouble-freeservice. There
areafewthingsyoucandotoensuretrouble-freeoperation:
! Ifyourtrainrespondsinconsistently,replaceoldbatterieswithfreshones. Donot
mixoldandnewbatteries.
! Removebatteriesbeforestoringforextendedperiods.
! Donotdroptheremote. Itcandamagethedelicateelectronicsinside.
! AnyattemptbyanyoneotherthananauthorizedM.T.H.repairpersontoopenand
repairthehandheldtransmitterorlock-onmayresultindamageandthelossof
warrantyprotection.
LubricatingandGreasing Instructions
Theengineshouldbeoiledandgreasedinordertorunproperly.
Regularlylubricateallaxlesandlinkagecomponentsandpickuprollersto
preventsqueaking. Uselighthouseholdoil,suchasthatfoundinM.T.H.'s
maintenancekit. Donotoveroil. Useonlyadroportwooneachpivot

thepickupandgroundwiresbetweenthetruckblockand
motormount.
! Repeattheprocedureifenginehasmorethanonemotor.
! Reassemblethechassisandbody,beingcarefulthatthe
wiresarenotcaughtbetweenthebodyandchassis,as
thiscanleadtoashortthatmaydamagetheelectronics
beyondrepair.
! Lubricatetheoutsidetruckblockidlerand
drivegearswithgreaseoccasionally.

withacottonswab.
Tocleanthetrack,useRailKingTrackCleaningFluidandacleanragordenatured(not
rubbing)alcohol. Unplugthetransformerandwipetherailsofthetrack,turningtherag
frequentlytoensurethatyouareusingcleanclothontherails. Becausethe
manufacturingprocessleavesacoatingonRealTraxcenterrail,youshouldcleantherails
afterthefirst30minutesofuse(youmaynoticeanelectricalsmellduringinitialuseas
thecoatingwearsoff;thisisnormal). Thereafter,keepaneyeonthetrackandcleanit
whenitgetsdirtytoensuregoodelectricalcontactandtolengthenthelifeofthetires.

flangeddrivers. Whilethesetiresareextremelydurable,youmayneedtoreplacethemat

PSAisprogrammedto startringingthebelland
thentoputtheengineinmotionatthatpoint.
Afterapproximately15rings ofthebell,itwill
automaticallyturnoff.
BecausePSAmustcontrolvariouseffectsin
eachsequence, Proto-Sound2.0takescontrolof
thesesoundeffectsuntilyouexitPSA.
EachPSAclipmustplayforacertainamount
oftimebeforePSAwilladvancetothenext
stepinthePSAcycle. Waitatleast30seconds
