plastic-compatible oil (available with M.T.H.'s Maintenance Kit, sold

Basic Operation
Operation Buttons
Throttle Up Throttle up the power to your trackbypressingthetopendoftheThrottle
Control Rocker Switch firmly for about 5 seconds, until theengine's headlight and
lighted cars burn bright. Thenputtheengineintomotionbyfirmlypressingthe
Directionbutton(holditforapproximately1second)on your remote once. If the engine
does not begin to move as soon as you firmly press the Direction button,youmaynot
have sent enough voltage to the track to makethetrainmove. Press the throttle u p f o r a
few more seconds until the train begins t o move. To increase or decrease track voltage,
and therefore train speed,pressthethrottlecontrolrockerswitch. Pressingthetopendof
the throttle will increase voltageandspeed. Pressing the bottomendofthethrottlewill
decrease voltage and speed. The engine will maintain thespeedyousetafteryourelease
the throttle untilyoupressitagaintochangethevoltageandspeed.
Bell - To sound the bell,firmly

This manual contains the operating instructions for Proto-Sound2.0inconventional
mode only. InstructionsforaccessingDCS command mode features accompany the
DCS Remote Control System equipment.
Activating Proto-Sound2.0Conventional Mode Features:
Proto-Sound2.0featuresareactivated by sequences of Bell andWhistle button pushes
described below. Please read thefulldescriptions of each feature before using it. To use
these buttons toactivatefeaturesratherthantoblowthewhistleorringthebell,you
should tap the buttons very quickly with a ½-second pause betweenbuttonpresses. You

Passenger station announcements (PSA):
Your engine is equipped with a soundpackage of passenger station announcements that
you can play when you pullintoastation. Each sequence described below willplayas
long asitislefton,randomlygenerating sounds,butbesuretoallowapproximately
30secondsbetweenthebuttonpushesdescribedbelow to allowthePSAsufficient
time torunthrougheachsequence.

To cuethesound systemtoplaythePSA,quicklybutfirmlyta p the Bell button once
followed by2quicktapsoftheWhistlebuttonwhiletheengineismoving. Tap the
buttons quicklybutallowapproximately½ second between each press.

Press the Direction buttononcetostoptheengine. This will trigger the first
sequence of PSA.Thereverseunitistemporarilydisabled so that the train will not
move as you usetheDirectionbuttontotriggerthesounds,andProto-Sound2.0 has
disabled operator controlovertheWhistleandBellbuttonsuntilthefullPSA
sequence is complete.

After waiting about 30secondsforthatsequencetorun, press the Direction button
again to trigger the second sequence of PSA.
!
After about 30seconds,presstheDirectionbuttonagaintotriggerthethirdPSA
sequence.

Again, after allowing about 30seconds for that sequencetorun,presstheDirection
button one more time to trigger thefourthandfinalPSAsequence. The PSAwill
continue,andwithinafewseconds,theengineandbell will start and move out on
its own at the currentthrottle setting, in thesamedirectionitwastravelingwhen you
began thesequence. Oncethebellturnsoff,theoperatorregainscontrolofthe
transformer's bell andWhistle buttons and can ring the bell or blow the Whistle as
usual.

Tips on Using PSA
! YoucanterminatePSAatanytimebyturningoffpowertothetrackfor15
seconds.
! You d o n o t h a v e t o be in Forward to use PSA. Attheconclusionofthefull
sequence, thetrainwillpullawayfrom the station in whateverdirection you
were going when youactivated thefeature.
! YoucanusePSAevenifyouaredouble-headingwithanotherengine.Ifthe
secondengineisnotequippedwithProto-Sound2.0, you must remember not
to leave the throttle at a high voltage level once you have stopped theengineto
runthePSA. Otherwise, theenginewithout PSAwill beginvibrating on the
track as its motorsstraintomovethetrain, since they cannotbe automatically
disabled during the PSAcycle(orifanoriginalProto-Sound engine,PSAare
triggered differently andthatengine'smotor-disable feature willnot be active
when you run PSA in Proto-Sound2.0).
! PSAcanbetriggeredfromNeutral. It will operate the same as if triggered
while in motion except that,attheconclusionofthePSA, theenginewill
depart in the next directionoftravel, as opposed to the direction i t was
traveling before entering Neutral.
Proto-Coupler® Operation
This locomotive is equipped with one or more coil-wound Proto-Couplersforremote
uncoupling action. Because Proto-Couplers are controlled through the Proto-Sound 2.0
microprocessor, theydonotrequireanuncouplingtracksectionormodificationtoyour
layout to function. You can fire a couplerfromneutralorwhileinmotion. Use the code
shown below (and inthechartonp.8)tofirethecoupler(s).
Rear Coupler:
To fire the rear coupler,quicklytaptheBellbuttononcefollowedbythreequicktapsof
theWhistle button, allowing approximately ½ secondtolapsebetweeneachquickbutton
press. The sound of theliftbar and air line depletion will play, and the knuckle will be
released.

Front Coupler:
To fire the front coupler (if your engine has one), quickly tap the Bell button once
followedbyfourquicktapsoftheWhistlebutton, allowing approximately ½ second to

play,andtheknucklewillbereleased.

Speed Control:
M.T.H. engines equipped with Proto-Sound 2.0 have speedcontrol capabilitiesthatallow
the engine to maintain a constant speedupanddowngradesandaroundcurves,much
like anautomobilecruisecontrol. Youcanaddordropcarsontherun,andtheengine
will maintain the speed you set.
While t h e engine is programmedtostartwiththespeedcontrolfeatureactivated,youcan
opt to turn it off. This means theengine's speed will fall as it labors up a hill andincrease
asittravelsdownward. Itisalso affectedbytheadditionorreleasingofcarswhileonthe
run.Becausetheenginewillrunmoreslowlyatagiventhrottlevoltagewhenspeed
control is onthanwhenitisoff,youshouldadjustthethrottletoalowerpowerlevelfor
operation with speed control off to avoid high-speedderailments. When speedcontrol is
off, the volume will droptoallowforbetterlow voltage operation.
To turn speedcontrol on andoff, put t h e engine in neutral,thenquicklytapthe
transformer'sWhistle button one time then quickly taptheBellbuttontwotimes,
allowingapproximately ½ second to lapse betweeneachquickbuttonpress. Twohorn
blasts will indicate that the engine has madethechange. Repeat the 1 whistle, 2 bells
code toreturnittotheothercondition. You will want to do this duringtheinitialneutral
upon start-up if you ever couple thisengine toanother engine that is not equipped with
speedcontrol toavoiddamagingthemotorsineitherengine. Each time youshutdown
the enginecompletely, it will automaticallyturnspeedcontrolon.

LockintoaDirection:
You can lock your engineintoadirection(forward, neutral, orreverse) sothatitwillnot
change directions. To do this, put the engineintothedirectionyouwant(orintoneutral
to lock itintoneutral), run it at a very slow crawl (as slowly as it will move without
halting), andquicklybutfirmlytaptheWhistlebuttononcefollowedbythreequicktaps
oftheBellbutton,allowingapproximately½ second to lapse between each quick button
press. Two whistle blasts willindicatethattheengine has madethechange. The engine
will not change direction (including g o i n g into neutral) until yourepeatthe1whistle,3
bells code toreturntheenginetoitsnormalcondition, even if the engineiskeptwithout
power for extendedperiods of time.

Maintenance
Care of the Remote Control
Your RailKing Remote Control System shouldofferyearsoftrouble-freeservice. There
are a fewthingsyoucandotoensuretrouble-freeoperation:

If your train respondsinconsistently, replace oldbatteries withfreshones. Do not
mix oldandnewbatteries.

Remove batteries before storing for extendedperiods.
!
Donotdroptheremote. It can damage the delicateelectronics inside.
!
Any attempt byanyoneotherthananauthorizedM.T.H.repairpersontoopenand
repair the handheld transmitter orlock-on mayresultindamageandthelossof
warrantyprotection.
Lubrication Instructions
The engine shouldbeoiledandgreasedinordertorunproperly.
Regularly lubricate all side rods and linkage components and pickup rollers

Cleaning the Wheels, Tires and Track
Periodicallycheckthelocomotivewheelsandpickups
for dirt and buildup, whichcancausepoorelectrical
contact and traction andprematurely wear outthe
neoprenetractiontires. Wheels and tires can be
cleaned usingdenatured (not rubbing) alcohol applied
with a cotton swab.
Tocleanthetrack,useRailKingTrackCleaningFluid
and a clean rag or denatured (notrubbing) alcohol.
Unplug the transformer and wipe the rails ofthetrack,
turning theragfrequentlytoensurethatyouareusing
cleanclothontherails. Because the manufacturing
process leaves a coatingonRealTrax center rail,youshouldcleantherailsafterthefirst
30 minutesof use(you may notice anelectrical smell during initial use as the coating
wears off; this is normal). Thereafter, keep an eye on the track and clean it whenitgets
dirty toensuregoodelectrical contact and tolengthenthelifeofthetires.
Traction Tire Replacement Instructions
Yourlocomotiveisequippedwithtwoneoprenerubbertractiontiresontherearsetof
flanged drivers. While thesetiresareextremelydurable,youmayneedtoreplacethemat
some point.

ProtoSmoke® Unit Operation
This steamlocomotivecontains a smoke unit that outputs smoke through the smokestack
ontheboileroftheengine. The smoke unitisessentiallyasmallheatingelementand
wick that soaks upandthenheatsamineraloil-basedfluidthatemitsaharmlesssmoke.
The smokeisthenforcedoutofthestackbyasmallelectricfan.
Withafeweasymaintenancesteps, youshouldenjoytrouble-free smoke unit operation
for years.

When preparingtorunthisengine, add15-20dropsofsmokefluidthroughthe
smokestack. We recommend M.T.H.ProtoSmoke,Seuthe, LGB, or LVTS fluids (a

Self-Charging Battery Back-Up
The special NiCad7-cell8.4vself-chargingbatteryrecharges continuously duringtrain
operationand should last for uptofiveyears. The battery i s a drybatterythatshouldnot
leak or cause anydamagetoyourengine. Depending upon when yourengine was
built, it may needtobechargedrightoutofthebox. If enginesoundsseemdistorted
or garbledatlowvoltagesorbecomesilentwhenpowerfromthetransformeristurned
off, test the battery todetermine whether it should be rechargedorreplaced.

Test: Put theengineinneutralandleavethetrackvoltageat10-12volts(high
enough for the lights toshinebrightlyand the engine to movesteadily) for 15
minutes.

whenever PSA is enabled. This way theengine
remains still atitsstopastheoperatorcycles
throughthe PSAsequences.
PSAisprogrammedtostartringingthebelland
then to puttheengineinmotionatthatpoint.
Afterapproximately 15 rings of the bell,itwill
automatically turn off.
Because PSA must controlvarious effects ineach
sequence,Proto-Sound 2.0 takescontrol of these
sound effectsuntil youexitPSA.
EachPSAclipmustplayforacertainamountof
time before PSAwilladvancetothenextstepin
the PSAcycle. Wait atleast30secondsineach
PSAsound clip before pressingthe Direction
button.

How to Get Service Under the Terms of the Limited One-Year Warranty

First, e-mail, write, call or fax anAuthorized M.T.H. Service Center in your area or
M.T.H. Electric Trains to obtain Repair Authorization. You can find the list of
Authorized Service Centers on the M.T.H. website, www.mth-railking.com.
Otherwise, contact M.T.H. (at e-mail: service@mth-railking.com; 7020 Columbia
Gateway Drive, Columbia, MD 21046; tel: 410-381-2580; fax: 410-423-0009),
stating when the item was purchased and describing the problem. If you contact
M.T.H., you will be given a return authorization number to assure that your
merchandisewillbeproperlyhandleduponitsreceipt.
CAUTION: Makesuretheproductispackedinitsoriginalfactorypackagingincluding
itsfoamandplasticwrappingmaterialsoastopreventdamagetothemerchandise. The
shipmentmustbeprepaidandwerecommendthatitbeinsured. Acoverletterincluding
your name, address, daytime phone number, e-mail address (if available), Return
Authorization number, a copy of your sales receipt and a full description of the
problem must be included to facilitate the repairs. Please include the description
regardless of whether you discussed the problem with a service technician when
contactingtheServiceCenterorM.T.H.foryourReturnAuthorization.
Please make sure you have followed the instructions carefully before returning any
merchandiseforservice.
Limited One-Year Warranty
All M.T.H. products purchased from an Authorized M.T.H. Train Merchant are
coveredbythiswarranty.

M.T.H. products are warrantied for one year from the date of purchase against defects in

itemisreturnedtoanAuthorizedM.T.H.ServiceCenterorM.T.H.ElectricTrainswithinone
year of the original date of purchase. This warranty does not cover damages caused by
improper care, handling, or use. Transportation costs incurred by the customer are not
coveredunderthiswarranty.
