NOTE: Short end of clutch rod must attach to clutch lever. 5. Long end of clutch rod attaches to shifting lever on mower. Insert from top. The small spring furnished wiil hold rod in position and keep it from rattling. Slide looped end over rod, then with a hand pliers grasp straight end and push end through hole in rod. OPERATING CONTROLS SHUT-OFF VALVE a CHOKE CONTROL LEVER 7 7 We Figure 2 CHOKE CONTROL LEVER (See Fig. 2) The choke control lever located directly behind the gas tank has three positions; ‘‘Choke’’, **Run’’ and “Stop”. The choke control is strictly for starting and stopping the engine. Once the engine starts place the lever in the ‘‘Run’’ position and control the engine speed with the throttle control lever located on the upper handle, THROTTLE CONTROL (See Fig. |) The speed of the engine is controlled by the movable collar on the right hand side of the handle. When the collar is turned back, the speed of the engine is decreased. TRACTION CLUTCH CONTROL (See Fig. 1) To engage traction clutch push clutch lever forward. Pull clutch lever back to disengage clutch. REEL CLUTCH CONTROL The reel clutch (Ref. 65, IHust. 1) is located to the left of the reel on the chaïn case. Turning the handle half around to the lower posi- tion will disengage the reel, Have clutch disengaged when mower is being transported to avoid possible accidents and damage to reel 0 and bed knife. Always disengage the reel clutch when crossing driveways, walks, or such places where stones or other objects may become lodged in the reel. STARTING AND STOPPING ENGINE ESS VS N \ WARNING - DANGER \ \ To avoid possible serious bodily injury, keep hands and \ N feet away from reel blades before and after starting the en- N \ gine. Be certain that the traction and reel clutches are dis- \ \ engaged before starting engine. Engine will not start unless \ clutch lever is in disengaged position. N A; TANT STARTING ENGINE 1. Check fuel supply and open fuel tank shut-off valve. OPERATING 2. Set choke control lever to the ‘“Choke’' position. (See Fig. 2) 3. Grasp the starter handle firmly, then pull slowly and firmly to crank the engine, à. When engine starts, move choke lever to the ‘‘Run’’ position, Intermittent choking may be required while engine is cold. STOPPING ENGINE Move choke control lever to ““Stop'' position. INSTRUCTIONS JELENA N WARNING - DANGER ии \ \ To avoid possible serious bodily injury while clearing \ \ grass build-up from around the reel shaft, disengage N \ clutches and control levers, stop the engine, disconnect \ the spark plug wire from the plug, and place the wire away N from the plug. \ Reena ue ee Le eL eIQ LLL eun POWER TRANSPORT WHEELS We recommend that the power transport wheels furnished with the mower be used whenever the mower is transported. The wheels are quickly attached and removed after the mower is raised by pushing the foot rest (Ref. 21, Hlust. 6) down against ground and pulling back on handle, The life of the mower is greatly increased when the transport wheels are used over rough fairways, and time is saved in moving from one green to another. The wheels are removed or attached by sliding the retaining clip (Ref. 16, 11lust. 6) to the end of the groove and rotating it 90 to a position parallel to the shaft. When operating with transport wheels in place, the clip must be at right angles to the shaft and centered. Be sure transport wheel bearings and pawls are kept lubricated as stated in the lubrication chart. CUTTING WITH MOWER First, be sure to read and understand the instructions in this man- ual. Check the cutting height of mower, reset if necessary. Upon arrival at the green, remove the transport wheels and place them in a clean area off to the side of the green. Engage the reel clutch before starting the engine. Be sure that the traction clutch is disengaged before attempting to engage the ree! clutch. To engage the reel clutch, put outward and upward pressure on the clutch handle and turn the drive shaft slowly until the handle has rotated one half turn to the upward position and seated squarely in the retaining notch. Position mower at one side of green, (whichever side suits opera- for’'s convenience), slightly off the green. Start engine as outlined in “Starting and Stopping the Engine", Lift the mower head above the grass by pushing down on the handle then engage the traction clutch. As the mower head crosses the edge of the green set the mower head down and proceed across the green in a straight line. When the opposite side of the green is reached, lift the mower head without disengaging the traction clutch and proceed off the green to turn around. The inexperienced operator may find it helpful to re- duce engine speed somewhat while turning around, do not disengage the traction clutch however. As the operator gains experience he will develop his own style of turning around, however the following may prove helpful. To turn to the right - start by turning slightly (approx. 30°) to the left. When the mower has moved approx. 1/2 it’s own width to the left, swing it around quickly to the right, guiding it with the right hand. This method makes it possible to turn around quickly with very few steps (See Fig. 3). A left turn is made in the same manner as a right turn except that the directions are reversed. == rama — GREEN "TO 2" OVERLAP (25 mm) to 2'' (50 тт) Figure 3 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS To assure complete, even cutting it is necessary to overlap swaths 0 by 1''(25 mm) or 2'*(50 mm). After completely covering the green using the back and forth pattern, it is necessary to make one or more passes around the circumference of the green to clean up the ragged 1StMOWING edges and to neatly separate the putting green surface from the apron area. It is customary to alter the mowing pattern each time a green is mowed. This provides a more even playing surface and neater appearance (See Fig. 4). 2nd MOWING Always disengage the reel clutch prior to transporting the mower more than a few feet as damage to the reel blades and bedknife will 3rd MOWING occur if the reel is permitted to run without cutting grass for more THESE ARE SUGGESTED PATTERNS ONLY than a few seconds, Normal turns off the green with the reel lifted OPERATOR CAN ARRANGE PATTERNS TO above the grass will do no harm, SUIT EACH GREEN 4th MOWING Figure 4 MAINTENANCE LUBRICATION CHART See your Engine Operator's Manual for Maintenance procedures. LOCK SCREW FA OPERATING LEVER ии VA CLUTCH FORK SPRING / 7 и Figure 7 CLUTCH ADJUSTMENT 1. After extended use the traction clutch will require adjustment to prevent slippage. See Figure 7 and adjust as follows: Disengage the clutch. Remove shield and cover assembly. Loosen the fill- ister head screw on the cluich one-half to three-quarter turn. Now tap the clutch collar lightly moving it toward the engine about 1./32''(.793 mm). Retighten screw on collar and engage clutch and test the adjustment. Too much movement of the collar toward the engine will prevent the clutch from being engaged. The right adjustment will permit easy operation of the clutch without any slippage existing. 2. To prevent excessive clutch shoe wear adjust tension of the clutch fork spring to hold the shoe free in the clutch operating sleeve’groove with clutch handle in the forward or engaged posi- tion. TRACTION SHAFT BEARING ADJUSTMENT Any end play that develops in traction shaft must be removed, Pro- ceed as follows: 1. Remove right transport wheel, 2. Remove R.H. wheel drive pin from traction shaft. 3. Remove bearing cap screws. Use puller to remove bearing cap with bearing from shaft. Remove gasket. 4. Turn adjusting nut to right only enough to eliminate end play. 5. Replace all parts in reverse order. Tighten securely. CUTTING UNIT ADJUSTMENT (See Fig. 8) Upper and lower adjusting nuts and lock nuts are provided on both sides. (Turning the upper adjusting nut clockwise moves the bed knife away from the reel; counter-clockwise, toward the reel.) © ADJUSTING NUT > FRONT CROSS BAR LOCKNUT ——— .— $ ADJUSTING NUT BEDKNIFE SHOE BEDKNIFE ADJUSTING ROD ~~ Figure 8 To adjust the bedknife to the reel follow steps below: 1. With the engine stopped, disengage the reel clutch so that the reel can be freely revolved by hand. 2. Turn each upper adjusting nut counterclockwise while slowly revolving the reel to obtain very light reel blade to bedknife contact from end to end. 7 3. Tighten lower adjusting nuts and check adjustment with paper. 4. The adjustment should be such that it is possibleto cut a strip of newspaper along the entire length of each reel blade, It should be possible to spin the reel backwards by hand after mak- ing this adjustment. Avoid excessive tightening or serious dam- age may result to knife and reel blades. 5. Tighten locknut securely, when correct adjustment has been attained, To remove bedknife shoe: 1. Turn adjusting nuts counter-clockwise 1/4 turn or more to bring the bedknife into light contact with the reel blades. 2. Remove both shoe mounting bolts, 3. Turn adjusting nuts counter-clockwise until the shoe ends are relieved of all spring pressure. 4. Rotate shoe ends out from between spring and adjusting bolt ends. To replace bedknife shoe: 1. Place shoe ends between springs and adjusting bolt ends and rotate shoe into position with the bedknife in position below the reel blades. ADJUSTMENTS 2. Turn adjusting nuts evenly, clockwise, until holes in shoe and frame can be aligned. O. 4, Adjust bedknife to proper cutting position (see section on sharp- enine the reel) and shim and lap if necessary, Install both shoe mounting bolts and pull them normally tight with a hand wrench. SHARPENING THE REEL When the reel becomes dull or nicked, it may be lapped in with emery and oil by the following method: 1. Disengage reel clutch. 2. Remove reel bearing cover from left hand frame. 3. Insert reversing crank in reel shaft, turning it to the right, (Avail- able from Service Dept.) Order No. 304686. 4. Adjust the bedknife evenly so the reel blades wipe along its en- tire length. In case there is a high spot in the bedknife, loosen the screw nearest that point and insert a shim between the knife and shoe. When the knife has the best possible contact with the reel blades, turn the reel backward and apply a mixture of emery dust (#60 carborundum) and oil with a brush along the entire length of the reel. When the blades have been evenly lapped in this manner, carefully wash off the remaining mixture from the blades and shoe. Readjust the cutting unit as outlined in ‘‘Cut- ting Unit Adjustment”, Removing reel from mower: After long service, it may be necessary to remove the reel for servicing. NOTE Reel grinding is normally done without removing the reel from the mower, 10. 1. Back the bedknife away from contact with the reel. 2. Remove both transport wheels, 3. Remove R.H. and L.H. transport wheel drive pins from the trac- tion shaft. 4. Remove screws holding R.H. and L.H, transport bearing caps and remove caps using a puller. 5. Loosen reel clutch lever hold-down spring, rotate from above lever and remove lever. 6. Remove chain housing drain and filler plugs and drain housing. Tip unit up on L.H. side to drain, 7. Remove chain cover. 8. Loosen and remove all three sprockets with the chains in place, 9. Remove pin from L.H. bearing spacing collar and remove collar and bearing cone, Remove R.H. reel bearing cover, nut, washer, spring and bearing cone. 11. Remove front roller bracket mounting screw, front tie rod nut, bedknife shoe mounting bolt, and four crossbar mounting bolts from the R.H. side frame and remove the R.H. side frame. NOTE Removal of the L.H. side frame from the mower involves disassembly of the planetary set. This is inadvisable, 12. Slide reel out from L.H. side frame. To reassemble the reel, follow the above instructions in reverse order. After reassembly refill the chain case with EP-140 oil to level of lower plug and follow instructions in preceding paragraphs regarding bedknife adjustment, Lap if necessary. BRUSH MOUNTING BRACKET pr L.H, SIDE SUPPORT PAD NUT COTTER PIN / WASHER el al/ Figure 9 9 ADJUSTMENTS BRUSH ATTACHMENT The brush is adjustable to meet all turf conditions. It can be ad- justed with a rearward tilt for light brushing, vertical for full brush contact or forward for deepest penetration. Wash mower off after brushing to remove grit and foreign particles which may cause wear to moving parts. BRUSH ADJUSTMENT (See Fig. 9) 1. Remove one nut from each rod and thread the remaining nut on the rods almost as far as they will go. This will allow for play later when centering brush on mower. 2. Insert rods through holes in brush mounting brackets and replace nuts removed in step 1. Do not tighten nuts at this time. 3. Insert mounting screw through other end of L.H. rod, place wash- er over screw and secure in place with cotter pin. Thread nut onto screw as far as it will go. 4. Insert screw into threaded hole in L.H. side frame and turn screw as necessary to have L.H. rod rest on support pad when brush is lifted into transport position. GI When rod is positioned to rest against support pad, tighten L.H, nut against frame to lock the adjustment. 6. Insert screw through other end of R.H. rod, place washer over screw and secure in place with cotter pin. Thread nut onto screw, insert screw in threaded hole in side frame and tighten nut against side frame. 7. Position brush to approximately center of mower. Adjust both nuts on each rod until brush is centered satisfactorily. Now the brush can be tilted to de sired angle (rearward tilt for light brush- ing, vertical for full brush contact, or forward tilt for deepset penetration). When desired brush angle is achieved, tighten nuts securely, o Connect hook on chain to brass eyelet in center of | ip on grass catcher. (See Fig. 9). LW WW WW ww ! Frequently asked questions
Ensure the area is clear of debris. Use substantial footwear and protective clothing, such as long pants and closed-toe shoes, during operation.
The manual does not specify how to adjust the cutting height of the mower.
Keep all nuts, bolts, and screws tight for safe operation. Avoid storing the mower with gasoline inside a building and clean the engine of grass, leaves, or excessive grease.
It is recommended to have a competent service representative inspect the mower at least once a year.
Allow the engine to cool before storing the mower in any enclosure. Keep the washout ports and other mower-housing service openings closed when mowing.
